Title: What's In Your DVD Player?
Post by: cine on April 26, 2004, 07:29:53 PM
This thread is similar to the Real Soundtracks thread. However this one is slightly different. What I did last night was studied the words "CD Player." After a long 3 and half hours, I discovered that when you replace the letter 'C' with the letters 'D' and 'V', you get: "DVD Player." So this is for you folks to flaunt what DVDs you're watching from your collection or which ones you've happened to NetFlix/rent.

Important Note: PLEASE Do Not Quote Pictures If They're On the Same Page.

Here's what's in my DVD Player right now:

I have the mirror in my player now.

Maybe we should all just edit our original posts when we have something new in it. And just list what we currently had in it.

Bad idea because people are going to want to discuss the movies in small talk and what have you..

Cinephile likes subversive television comedy.  :)

SNT likes jazz.   :(

I'm playing Darryl Hannah's big entrance in Kill Bill, Vol. 1 over and over again. It totally rocks, and I don't just throw that word around. The camp nurse-disguise eyepatch accessory is the perfect little flourish for it, too. It's a very De Palma moment- funny and overblown and stylish and rapturously fake/choreographed and oh-so-cinematic. Best part of the movie, I think.

It sort of supports my concept that Kill Bill, expert and passionately artificial as they are, are movies of great moments, "coolness" and not much else...

I haven't heard much. Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, perhaphs more. But with Jazz I think you have to be a very responsible listener, and I don't consider myself responsible towards music, let alone a single genre.  If you have recommendations let me know but I've tried before .

I really enjoy jazzy pop tunes the likes of which you hear in Woody Allen... the Annie Ross, etc. The guitar bits in Sweet and Lowdown were lovely. I don't like that pseudo-bohemian free-jazz stuff, for much the same reason I'm very underwhelmed by latter-day Radiohead. Or poetry slams. Needless complication and undeserved earnestness.

And since I find that people who talk about "jazz" as a genre or topic of discussion are talking about that record-store-clerk stuff and are likely to look down on the kind of jazz I like, my ears tend to glaze over when it's brought up.  :)  I much prefer things like Chopin and Mahler for my non-pop listening.

I've got the new Criterion Ozu disc in my DVD player, by the way (just so this doesn't become exclusively the Godardian is Anti-Jazz Thread).

its good, it has a nice script, good characters and everything. I like it because it makes a nice contrast with all the other dogme films I've seen, because it's an uplifting romantic comedy, but don't expect it to be like briget jones or those other british comedies, it's very different from that. I heard the american audience didn't like this film very much, I guess it's because there are some very good subtle jokes about football, italian cars and so on that european people might recognize those jokes from their own lives and that, for me, make the film.

The first movie in the Qatsi trilogy was in my dvd player. But then I put Band Of Outsiders in to watch the Karina interview.

Godardian and Cronopio: if you should find yourself wanting to try jazz, I would steer you toward the following albums. My Favorite Things, A Love Supreme by Coltrane. Kind of Blue, Someday My Prince Will Come, Sketches Of Spain by Miles Davis. The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady by Charlie Mingus. Moanin' by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Time Out by Dave Brubeck.

i just watched the Chaplin documentary in box set 2 last night.  it was really interesting and sort of sad how tough his life got at a certain point.  there also seemed to be a condescending attitude though towards any of his message films by those interviewed like Modern Times or Great Dictator like they were too preachy.  like i think woody allen was saying something about how he should've stuck to movies like the Circus which were just funny.  did you watch that cinephile?

That is utter BS. How the hell could you say that about the 'Great Dictator'. That was a hella ballsy movie. And not ballsy like 'Faranheit 911' and all that Jazz.

This afternoon I watched An American Werewolf in London.  Aside from a nipple shot and a few jokes here and there, it was a waste of an hour and a half.

Oh yeah, and I watched that "Freakin' Sweet Family Guy collection," mostly for the commentaries.  Good rental for that reason, not really worth buying.

Next time on "Ono Rips On-o (sorry) Your Favorite Horror Movies": Nosferatu.  I expect good things from this.  Vampire lore interests me.  So yeah, it won't be all bad.

watched my first two Marx Bros. movies tonite.  the jokes came very fast, which was good. though the mixing of the 'regular people' characters with these guys seems a little odd, like you're stepping into a different movie when they arent in a scene. but, some good stuff.

I've only seen The Ring...  from all the reviews I've read (and I've read a lot), it sounds like this is one instance where I'd prefer the remake to the original.  I'll be curious to hear your response to the movie.

Ringu is a much s l o w e r paced movie. It no way captures the tension and creepiness of the remake, which included some great scares and jumps. Also, the remake makes better use of the lead woman. In the original, she's partnered with the ex and that relationship takes away from the mystery of finding out the clues as she does. It becomes almost like exposition as each tidbit of information about the tape is discovered.

The movie disc is the exact same as the previous disc. The second, "Rings" disc, has a 15 minute short movie that's kinda precursor to Ring Two. It's alright. It's about a cult of fanatics who viewed the tape and try to cheat death. The disc also includes cast & crew interviews on the making of the first one, a featurette on urban ledgends, trailers and all the cursed videos from all the films. And, yes, it includes the free movie ticket.

Right now - Little Shop of Horrors (80's one)

Steve Martin's dentist song killed me. I always thought the xixax banner was from Novacaine! Great creature effects, too.

Just saw a beautiful new print of In Cold Blood at The Music Box. For my money, it's one of the best American films of the 1960's! I didn't care for Capote at all, so it was nice to see this TRUE classic on the big screen.

Nicely done. I can't remember where I read it, but he did an intereview about two years ago denouncing the "director's" cut. I suppose there are always exceptions to the rule.

assuming you're oblivious to the commonly-known fact that dvd merchant sites almost always contain clear descriptions of their products' special features, etc., here's a list of search engines you should start getting acquainted with immediately:

google, yahoo, msn search, dogpile, search.com, askjeeves, lycos, alltheweb, altavista. and there are zillions more.

breaking news: THEY DON'T CALL IT THE "INFORMATION HIGHWAY" FOR NOTHIN'.

Incredible!! Why I had waited so long to see this I have no idea. Generally I will watch a Netflix once and get it in the mail. I will be keeping Code until I can watch it again...probably this weekend. Haneke is an exciting discovery.

i liked the former more than i thought i would and the later less.  that said, kino could atleast pretend to give a shit about their transfers, it looked like absolute shit.  and i dont watch wong kar wai films to have them filled with dust scratches and an overall terrible transfer.  the dvd cover also looks like shit, and that is why kino will never be criterion.

Go to Amazon.com and look up the title. Click on 'make picture larger.' Right click then highlight and copy the properties 'address (URL)'. Then come back here and click on Insert Image (above the smilies, second icon from the left) and paste the 'properties' between (//).

As for the avatar, go to your Profile and click on Forum Profile Information on the left side. You can either link a photo from around the internet (I have my own pic) or upload one from your computer. Just keep it a reasonable size; 220x220 is about right.

hahah, you saw that?

After that happened I tried it on a different DVD player.  And it started from the beginning!  For some reason whenever I put it in the first DVD player, it starts at chapter 7 and won't let me go before that.  By the time I posted in this thread I'd finally seen the whole movie.

Anyway... I might have voted for the second half if I'd seen it while nominations were still going.

It's especially interesting for featuring interviews with Jim Jarmusch and Mary Harron, both of whom were evidently part of the punk scene in NYC.

Oooh!! Rope. I really like that. You know, I took this film class last fall, and one of the films we watched was The Celluloid Closet, in which Rope is kind of shown as an example of a) the unspeakableness of homosexuality in that era (the two murderers are obviously a couple and were in fact based somewhat on the notorious Leopold and Loeb, but it could not be spelled out in the film) and b) a homophobic inclination to depict gays and lesbians as deviant murderers (the same complaint that greeted Basic Instinct years later). It was really hard to explain (to classmates of whom most had never thought about these kinds of things before at all) that yes, The Celluloid Closet is right that these films do not have an enlightened view of homosexuality and probably did not do any good for any oppressed gays and lesbians in the audience at the time. BUT, from our post-Stonewall point of view, we should be able to appreciate the fineness and craft of films like Rope and The Children's Hour (the latter of which I think really works on a Sirkian/melodramatic level; how could anyone not sympathize with the torment of those characters and wonder why it must be so?). Anyway, Rope is a bit problematic in that area but still so, so good.

Me (coincidentally):

The Leopard, with commentary.

I find Peter Cowie's commentaries good to fine, but his most recent book was mostly a lot of superficial hyperbole, which made me think, "Wow, I'm not surprised his day job is at Variety." But I'm pretty sure that DVD commentaries are very rarely, if ever, extemporaneous, especially when they're by someone who wasn't involved in the film's production; so where's the very noticeable difference in approach and quality coming from? I wonder if he tailors his book writing to the Variety audience and his commentary writing to the Criterion audience....

random person: "Hello, godardian!"
godardian: "It's interesting you should say that. You know, the first written record of the word from which hello is derived, namely 'HOLLO,' can be found in the 1542 book entitled, 'A compendious regyment or a dyetary of helth,' scribed with laudable eloquence by Sir Andrew Boorde. No disrespect to Sir Boorde, but I much prefer the Thai pronunciation, haloo, a view (in)famously championed by Morrissey. This apparently transgressive approach to helloism seems to frequently provoke quite a furor among traditional and narrow-minded helloists."

 (or should it be :yabbse-embarassed:?) Blame my current Advanced English Grammar class. There's no vocabulary in the class per se, but diagramming sentences somehow makes me want to (try to) write really eloquent ones.

Anyway, my shameless Criterion whoredom runs rampant in my DVD player at the moment:

Never thought Darkman would make an appearance on these boards. One of those movies from my childhood, love it. Avoid the sequels if you find yourself fond of this one.

Hope that you loved it.

Movie was great. I didn't know it would be so funny. I've always had this preconceived notion that the movie was full-on drama film, I'm almost glad its not. Great performances all around.

I really just didn't know the movie had an adundance of comedy. I was going off on Adrian Lyne's remake of the film/book. Since that one is more serious, I just assumed Kubrick's would be as well.

STOP! PLEASE! Stop this foolish japery it hurts me to hear however jestful it may be.

Anyhoo, overmeunderyou as you seem to be an owner of the Eric Rohmer criterion set wouldst thou recommend to a Rohmer newcomer like myself to try and see some of his work first or are you confident that it would win me over and justify the purchase blind. It's a lot of money for a blind buy but this guy's seen by many as somewhat of a legend...

Well of course, it would be best if you are familiar with his work and it's something you enjoy before you invest in the dvd set. I would recommend you watch a black & white and a color film from the set, just to give you an idea.

Now playing:

Mind Game, its from the same animation studio that did Cat Soup and parts of the animatrix. It combines some crazy animation similar to "kids story" from the animatrix with some awesome waking life/scanner darkly-like rotoscoping. Such an awesome experience, i would've killed to see this in the theater

The original was great, but this remake was pretty creepy.  Imagining a voice for him was weird, but seeing him speak had a different level of terror.

Did you ever review Nosferatu or plan to?

Precisely. I've spent many a time attacking my friends for sticking up for this film, Sacha Baron Cohen is capable of genius but Ali G Inda House is a piece of crap.

More to the point:

Forgot how good this is, even if they did overcook it by the 4th one.
Shane Black needs to write more films.

I don't think that's the problem.  More studios need to produce Shane Black's scripts.

out of the 23 episodes i've seen , i've only really liked a full minute probably. it's such a shame that they waste time with the dreadful characters that aren't shatner or spader. too bad cos season 1 was kinda charming. boston barely legal.

So far, I loved the introduction. Only criticism would be that it ran just a tad longer than needed to, but still, it was great.

Some scenes are doing more for me than others, I still have not finished it. On the 37th minute mark.

just looking at the cover reminds me why i never watched it in the first place: i was extremely turned off by the perceived nerd-factor here.  i have never seen the original show, a Star Trek ANYTHING and figured all made for Sci-Fi channel stuff was total crap, but once i got over my prejudice i discovered that against all odds, this show is awesome.  my recommendation to everyone is: watch this.

i'm on the last ep of season 1 right now.

Haha that's funny. I have the same mind-set.

The dvd store I work at has this set:

For like $50 (CDN) oh wait, that doesn't matter anymore, but anyways, every time I see these kinds of shows I think exactly that...

Surprisingly half decent. Richard Linklater appears in this very briefly telling one of his crazy stories in a party scene (which was a treat to see).

Not a bad little film of two people connecting. It's worth watching mainly for Paz Vega's performance and how loose the filmmaking was, letting the actors play out scenes in long takes. There's an beautiful scene where Paz teaches Morgan a Spanish song while she's driving that is just so poetic. The DVD comes with a doc (that runs longer than the film) about how Brad Silberling wanted to, and did, accomplish shooting the film in 15 days.

I finally got around to watching this after buying it a year ago.

One of my favourite discoveries of late. It was in a Taschen book of the Best Movies of the 70s, which mostly discussed the film's satirical aspect of the Americanization of Germany. I just enjoyed the great mix of thriller and comedy.

Both films absolutely amazed me, definitely among my favorites of the year. The Visitor particularly is somewhere in my top 3 at the moment.

Please, everyone, go watch these now. If nothing else it will take away the horrible taste of Burn After Reading for two fine actors.

I loved "Miss Pettigrew..." as well.

Currently (for the upteenth time)

Yep, it's the old one.  It's anamorphic, so I haven't really jumped at upgrading to the latest DVD.

Well, I borrowed them from a friend, but after watching them I'm sure I'm going for a rampage to own all his stuff. I had some trouble with Blisfully Yours (I liked it though), but really I fell in love with Tropical Malady and Syndromes and a Century. I can't wait for his new films, because he seems to get better everytime he makes one!

mysterious object at noon is lovely.
i'm a little confused by the reservations about blissfully yours, in that i'm not sure how one can find it any more confounding than his other work.  granted the two other people who've seen it only said it was "tough[er]" before expressing their enjoyment, but i think blissfully yours is every bit as mesmerizing and moving as tropical malady and syndromes and a century.  opening credit sequence 40 minutes into the movie?  fantastic.
anyway, no other like him.  among my favorite contemporary filmmakers.

Speaking of gorgeously violent cartoons.  I can't remember the last movie I've watched in such close proximity to the same viewing, other than trying to get friends to see it.  When in doubt, I just pop this bad boy in.  It's everything that's cool about Heavy Metal, but more refined and in a cooler universe.

i wanna jump on the joe wright horse drawn carriage. my best friend's gf LOVES the BBC version and will die by colin firth's side. i hav no attachment to the book or previous incarnations of the story, so this pretty much rules as far as i'm concerned. HOWEVER -- on the dvd extras i watched an "alternate US ending" -- did you freaks see a different version? our cut ends with *spoiler* the scene where donald sutherland has given his consent and then summons darcy and giggles to himself -- cut to credits *spoiler* whereas the alternate US ending adds a further unnecessary scene. but i guess if you didn't love it by that point, a redundant final scene wouldn't make a difference. my only real complaint is i don't like keira knightley's lower jaw, her chin protrudes and her teeth are giving themselves constant curbies.

ive actually since watched this for the first time as well believe it or nay. US version ending apparently, however i did not love it by that point so youre right, ending made no difference. i finally netflixed it just to see what made this story so special and i just did not get what makes this story so special. constant galling giggly little girls and what you said about Keira and her grinny grin chin grin is all i saw unfortunately.

consider Come and See 'flixed, btw but it will undoubtedly sit in the player till the new year. not fit to be destroyed during the holidays.

Valerie and her week of wonders by Jaromil Jires (http://imdb.com/title/tt0066516)

This movie is fucking nuts. One of the strangest films I've ever seen. First of all, a movie about a 13 year old girl getting her first period is crazy enough, but you toss in an Alice in Wonderland type dream setting, incest, vampirism, molestation, demons and lesbianism, and you really have your work cut out for you.

I wanted to turn it off about nineteen times but I persevered. The last straw was pretty much the child nudity. I had to remind myself that the late 60's in Czechoslovakia was a different time. Some of the animal cruelty was a bit much, but that always bothers me however tame it is (here it's pretty tame).

This poor girl! All she wants to do is have her first menstrual cycle in peace but everyone keeps fucking with her, be it the demons, vampires, the guy with the mutton chops she likes, who turns out to be her brother. Just let her get her first bleeding out of the way!  :splat: Geeze louise!

I was actually happy for her when the townspeople burned her at the stake. At least she can be all moody and emo in peace.

I've been raiding the library with films that i've read about for years.  Some of the films i've gotten to see recently are:

Sullivan's Travels (Sturges)
The Night of the Hunter (laughton)
Blow-out (de palma)
Out of the past
The Blob (58)

The first two are 2 of the best movies i've ever seen.  4 out of 5 were criterions and the bonus features were just great.  Especially the commentary on Sullivan's Travels

Last night I rewatched Northfork. It's still slow going at times, but I think I enjoyed it more this time round because I wasn't expecting the weird Lynchian film I had been led to believe it would be upon my initial viewing. Definitely worth a watch if you're in a quiet mood and have a couple of hours free. An interesting side note: it was shot entirely using just natural light sources.

My description of the premise:
Angels have long run wild in the small town of Northfork but they are dying out thanks to excessive hunting for their precious wings. One preacher now helps these butchered angel children find adoptive human parents. Meanwhile, a group of suited men are faced with challenge of evicting the final few stranglers from the town before it is flooded to create a new hydroelectric dam which will forever wipe Northfork off the map.

"The reigning king of Southwestern noir."
–Nick Pinkerton, The Village Voice

^the quote on the blu-ray case that roped me in. i'm lucky to have a friend who buys these expensive twilight releases, and this one had particular interest for me because of that quote and because of richard fleischer

within the los angeles movie community, quentin tarantino has brought the name richard fleischer back to life, through showing his movies at the new bev. and i tell ya what, he's kinda the classic qt pick -- he doesn't have a solid rep but he's an absolute goddamn delight

examples of richard fleischer directing:
armored car robbery
the narrow margin
20,000 leagues under the sea
violent saturday
the vikings
compulsion (orson welles)
barabbas
doctor dolittle
the boston strangler (tony curtis/henry fonda)
*the last run
see no evil
*the new centurions
soylent green
mr. majestyk
mandingo
the jazz singer
amityville 3-d
conon the destroyer
red sonja

* the two i saw at new bev. and everyone who saw it assured me that it was a major fuckup of mine to not have gone to see mandingo. and if that list sparked some memories for you, it should also be noted richard is the son of max fleischer. his life was the dream, basically

violent saturday is a cinematic soap opera with southern charm, i'd say something like ruthless + cat on a hit tin roof + bank robbery. i'd say it's like an almodóvar melodrama, ripe with camera and personality and intrigue and surprise. just a fucking popping movie. there's one part when a character majorly disses another character the other character sinks into a diss-spiral, and a father explains to his son why not all men who go to wars come back with medals, how not all men are heroes, and later the father cries, and things like that happen again and again. loved it

Glad to hear it. Wow, he's got one hell of a track record. Done some really interesting things but no one ever brings up his name. Red Sonja is always on the el ray network, but the only one I've really seen of his is 'Mandingo'. Not an enjoyable film, but it sure pushes some buttons and the photography is great. Amity 3 is something I should check out too, since I'm catching up on those ( stay away from the the first one at all costs, btw ). I wonder what 'Armored Car Robbery' is about... :ponder:

pretty nuts.  Nothing too interesting has happened yet, except a guy said "I'm not a fag, but.." and propositioned Jeff Bridges because he felt like "Something different". That was pretty good, hope there's some more of that. Directed by Burgess Meredith of 'Rocky' fame.  I can't tell if James Mason is pretending to be Chinese or Irish. The music is hilariously lame.

Some of the stuff I've watched in the past few months:

Letter Never Sent
Nashville
Tokyo Story
Wild Strawberries
Good Morning
Last Year at Marienbad
The Spirit of the Beehive
Stalker
La Pointe Courte
The World at War (1970s doc)
Modern Times
Ugetsu

Ozu just really meshes well with my overall mindset these days, and Varda is a revelation.

Letter Never Sent has been sitting on my shelf for years. Need to give it a run eventually.

It's jaw-droppingly beautiful. Cinematography ahead of its time.

Story leaves much to be desired, but if you view it as a relic of Soviet cinematic propaganda it's fascinating & absolutely worth a viewing.

Thanks for the recommend. I'll track down El Sur.
Spirit of the Beehive just sticks with you, so I can see where Erice is worth additional looks.
