Title: The Video Rental Thread
Post by: Gold Trumpet on April 06, 2003, 10:56:11 AM
I always wondered why no one ever began a thread that dealt with what people rented and what they thought of them since a lot of the movies watched is from video rentals. Video rentals in variation are so massive that they never seemed worthy of many threads alone for any one film, so I will begin by saying what I thought of the last two movies I rented.

Secretary: An unbelievably bad movie that actually makes sado machism a very boring thing in general. The movie never gets out of various plot points for what it wants to communicate to show any freedom that something can be surprising at all. The ending is so contrived and ridiculous that speaking about it seems like a waste of time. Only thing I got of pleasure from the movie was that Maggie Gyllenhaal has a nice body. I read somewhere where a critic, the lady from the show Hot Ticket, said that it was one of the most original movies she had ever seen before. That seemed like it was the farthest from what it was.

Personal Velocity: Elements of it I admired, but really a tired movie that seems like it wants to capture the fiction portion of a book within a movie. The end results seems like what Virginia Woolf once complained about the movies, and it is that they felt like one syllable words in a novel. Everything about this movie feels like bad fiction, where the obvious is overstated and it seems pretensious oversteps the cinematic value that could be gained if the movie slowed itself down, realized the amount that could be told in a story, and decided to just tell that story.

I actually haven't had a video store membership in almost two years, and thus haven't rented any movies in a long time. I do get them from the library, though, which I guess is renting. The last two I checked out was The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (which was great, but I missed the last five minutes because of a scratch on the damn disc!) and Network (which of course is great, but I hadn't seen it in years, long enough to make me surprised at exacty how much Spike Lee took from it for 'Bamboozled')

I didn't like Secretary either, although the performances definitely made it watchable. I liked Personal Velocity, but it did feel so much like a short story collection that I'd almost rather have read the short stories they were based on (from writer/director Rebecca Miller).

Pretty good thread.  This weekend we rented:

Red Dragon: It wanted to be so good it hurt.  I never really could get into it.  What a waste of talent.

Mostly Martha: Really good and with outstanding performances.  My wife recommended it, mostly for the cooking.  Simple story, but the writing and acting made the movie.  Recommended.

Arabian Nights:  This was my first Pasolini film.  Sucked.  Using nonprofessional actors and dubbing will get you nowhere fast.

Le Mepris: Excellente!

i rented 13 conversations about one thing. I thought the script was excellent. performances were excellent. i thought the directing was  a little bland. there were sequence that were gorgeous -- especially when the white shirt blows away -- some sequences seemed a little awkward, would have loved to see this script in the hands of another director -- all around a i really enjoyed -- alan arkin is the man.

I enjoyed this movie as well, I took a chance with it and actually enjoyed it...yes, bland at times...but the way the whole thing circles around and never really has a definate timeline until it's completion was pretty cool....not too bad.

Also....Anyone else see Tadpole??  It was kinda cool...shot on DV and the story wasn't that bad...although kinda Taboo...but overall I felt it was a good flick!

I definitely agree with your review of Secretary, just rented it this past weekend. I thought it was suppose to be funny  :?:

I felt really sick after watching it for some reason. It didn't shock me too much, I think it was just a coincidence. Anyway, it sucked. Only good parts were the ones w/ Jeremy Davies.

Also rented The Truth About Charlie...

^Hopefully, the worst Demme movie I will ever see.

i just saw secretary as well. eh. it started off well, but quickly degraded into shit. they could have gone in such an interesting direction with that thing, but it just becomes stoopit.

I borrowed a lot of movies from my friend this week (the one that got all the criterions). Here goes...

George Washington - Awesome
Brazil - Awesome
Withnail and I - Amusing
Thunderball - an OK bond movie. not a criterion, i'm aware.
Dead Ringers - Fucking rocks
8 1/2 - I was so sleepy when I watched this that it just went over my head. there were things there that i loved about it, and then there were parts where i'd nod off and have no idea what was going on when i looked back up. i have to watch this again.

I got Far From Heaven for tonight. Netflix, I love you.

Last two movies I rented:

8 1/2:  :)  8)  8)  8) :)   :!:  :(
The Spanish Prisoner: Nice little Mamet caper film. Some of the clues got a little heavyhanded near the end though ("You got your fingerprints all over your new book.") A bunch of plot holes too, but fun nonetheless. :(

I finally rented Rules of Attraction. Didn't like it, but liked it more than I thought I would. Handling of the movie is well done, but sympathy or care where it is asked to be put in place in mostly non existent. Shannyn Sossamon, of however you spell her name, is really hot. I could watch a movie alone for her being in it. Also, the sequence that shows Victor's European trip is amazing, and alone could hold up as a very good short film of sorts. I honestly never had seen a sequence like that before in any movie and this was even more rewarding. It's sad though, because there was talent in the filmmaking, but a need to rely on things that are not really important nor interesting.

8 Women - Enjoyable for most of the time, with its delicate 1950s style comedy that keeps on bringing up cute revelations and good chemistry between the actresses but the revelations end up getting too tiresome and get overtly too dramatic at the end that makes the film numbing and hard to finish.

The Crime of Padre Amaro - Very good film that starts out in a small way and seems to have low expectations but keeps on adding new skins and I got thoroughly involved and by the end of it, very moved.

Rabbit-Proof Fence - Great movie that does what The Quiet American couldn't and that is bring us under the skin of a world, to have direction completely confident in tackling the subject matter. A great experience.

I have rented and watched other movies since last posting here, but only could remember these.

Today was the first time I actually went to a rental house in almost a year.  My policy is, catch it at theatres and/or buy it on DVD.  But today I read some things on Lars Von Triar that interested me so I made a stop to BB and rented Dancer In The Dark, which I have yet to watch.  Also rented Waiting for Guffman, which I hadn't seen and was somewhat underwhelmed with.  The performances were fantastic, but I thought Best In Show was much better.  I even liked A Mighty Wind more.

Isn't Funny Games the same director as The Piano Teacher? Now, I loved Piano Teacher, but I'm afraid to watch Funny Games for the same reason I keep meaning to re-watch Reservoir Dogs but can't quite bring myself to: I have an aversion to really graphic and/or prolonged torture scenes in films. Don't get me wrong: I loved Dogs (years ago when I saw it), The Marathon Man, etc, but... torture scenes make me squeamish, and I feel I need to be forewarned about this Funny Games before I dive in. Doesn't someone break into a family 's home and then basically physically torture them? Am I mistaken on this? And if so, how disturbing is it, on a Reservoir Dogs scale, with, say, Salo being a 10, Dogs being a 7, and Clockwork Orange or Dressed to Kill being a 3 (the more stylized it is, the less disturbing I find it)?

I do plan to see Irreversible, too. I'm not a wimp, but some things are just harder for me to watch than others, and one-on-one cruelty involving physical violence/rape/mutilation tops my list.

yes... same director... he also did a piece on the lumiere and company film...

It's pretty brutal from what I remember... in a kind of unforgiving way too.  It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I'd give it a hmmm... an 8?  Maybe... how much does the emotional torture bothers you?  Because that's a big factor.

It depends on whether it's Cape Fear-style "I'm gonna do the worst things possible to you physically, but I'm gonna tell you all about it first," or purely "psychological." I can handle psychological more easily.

if you think you can handle it, i say go for it. it's one of the most interesting movies i've seen in a long while. it succeeds in making the audience feel like a piece of shit. haneke is a demented genius.

i actually felt the most tense part was in the first 10 minutes where there is absolutely no violence or any threat of something crazy happening. who would have ever thought that a guy asking for eggs without any trick shots or scary music could be so fucking creepy? i almost turned it off after this scene. if you make it past that point, haneke succeeds in getting you to stay the whole time... it's like he reels in his audience with that scene. i'm usually able to take things well in movies and not get scared by scary movies, my hands were covering my face the entire time. it's the first time in maybe 10 years that a movie has given me nightmares.

i'm sorry, i'm lying. the last movie that gave me nightmares was curse of the jade scorpion. no joke.

I just rented Dancer In the Dark by Lars Von Trier... and right now the banner while I'm writing this post is Dancer In the Dark.  Coincidence?  Anyways... it was great...so dark and sad.  It manages to turn into a Greek tragedy and maintain a degree of realness at the same time, which is very important.  It was very disturbing, but more emotional... not so draining as something like Requiem/Salo.  I also rented Buffalo 66...but the tape won't play so I have to return it for another... :(  Dreamlife of Angels was another powerful and sad film.  Again, more emotionally draining.  A lot has been copied from it too[/i]

Well said. Sossamon is a beauty alright, and I want to see her in better roles.  As for Dawson playing Bateman, for the first time I liked his acting. He plays demented/intense very well. Not quite sure what they were going for in the warping of narrative though....I found it more of a distraction than an artifice to help the movie along. Kinda like "Hey neeto, look what we're doing! Betcha never seen this before!"

Its weird though with Sossamon, because its easy for someone in the movies to be really hot, but with her, I am more just drawn to her instead of being turned on by her looks. She looks really unique and has such a charm about the way she naturally is made my experience of going to the theatres to see 40 Days and 40 Nights actually enjoyable. I've seen everything she's done with the exception of seeing A Knight's Tale all the way through. I've seen most of the movie in parts via repeated HBO airings but someday soon I think I will watch it all from beginning to start. I also hope she gets better roles, but she is worthwhile even in these roles.

I love the rewind part of 'Funny Games.' I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it. Haneke is something else. I haven't seen Code Unknown yet, but Piano Teacher was probably the most shocking and uncomfortable thing I'd seen up until Irreversible earlier this year. I'm looking forward to his Cannes entry this year -- I believe it's a post apocalyptic film?

i really really want to see the piano teacher and this thread as made me interested in funny games too.  salo looks interesting.  but i think it's pretty hard to find.  my local blockbuster doesn't carry it, methinks.

yeah...i'm going through a dark period in life where sick twisted movies seem appealing.

the other day, i rented the Killing Fields.  EXCELLENT movie.  the ending could have been terribly schmaltzy, yet it felt earned becuase the relationship between these two men was so touching.  great depiction of the cambodian genocide too...

and i rented seven samurai but i don't know if i'm up to it.

i recently rented in the mood for love and i couldn't get through it.  it bored the absolute SHIT out of me.  i felt like a philistine for not liking it

my girlfriend suggested we rent 8 WOMEN which we had seen a preview for in the theaters and looked like it could be amusing, so we rented that.  personally, i hated it.  hated hated hated.  how many times do we have to see this CLUE scenario before it becomes old?  (or is this like a clever, "we're too clever to be ripping this off, so we're like being too smart for this genre" type of thing?)  the whole movie was cliche'd and terrible.  FIRST of all, (if it isnt too late for that), its based on a play.  as a rule of thumb i do not like movies based on plays. (there are exceptions, but rules of thumb are good guides).  there are SOOOO MANY things you can do with 2 hours.  so (most of the time) if youre spending 2 hours in a film inside of one room/house, it feels like a waste of my time.  you can show infinite amounts of information in 2 hours. (see CITY OF GOD for recent example of making the most of your running time).  if its a play, make it a play!  if its a movie, make it a movie.  dont make a play a movie, unless you really plan on "adapting" it and taking full advantage of the cinematic possiblities you have.  (Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchcock were able to make plays into movies succesfully),  whereas this just felt like they basically just set up cameras to film the play.  what was the point of this movie anyway?  finding out a few of them were lesbians and theyre all having affairs with the dead guy?  and what was with the musical interludes?!?  the colors were cute at first, but quickly became obnoxious.  did i mention i hated this movie?  apologies for the rant, but thats 4 bucks and 2 hours i can never have back.

finally watched BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF.  hated it.  really deeply hated this pile of shit.  it looks like the french just figured out shutter speeds!  wow, changing to slow-motion in the middle of a shot.  cool the first few times, but after a half hour of this, it kind of got old.  was there really any need for this to be 2 1/2 hours?  besides that the entire first hour and a 1/2 had like ZERO action.  WHICH, wouldnt have been so bad had it actually been developing a STORY or characters that you care about. i really dont know WHAT they were thinking. the idea was cool, the structure was horrific.  if it was going to drag on for so long, shouldnt there atleast be a payoff that we didnt figure out like an hour ago?  you couldnt pay me to watch this again.

Yes, it was beautiful. It was a sort of different take on Douglas Sirk than Far from Heaven's much less tongue-in-cheek rendition.

This is definitely not the first or last time I'll quote Andrew Sarris: It's not what [happens in a film], it's how.

I loved 8 Women. It was right up there with Y Tu Mama Tambien and 13 Conversations About One Thing and Punch-Drunk Love and Far from Heaven itself in my favorites of 2002.

I had to revive this thread since I rent a lot of movies.....hey, at least I searched first.

I hated Malibu's Most Wanted (who would have thought), dissapointed by Anger Management, and Punch Drunk Love was a good movie for Sandler but still didn't live up to what I expected after all the raves on here about it.

I'm not going to go into detail about reviews and such but I did like A Mighty Wind.....for about the first 30 minutes. Sure, the cast works their parts well together but I failed to see anything too comical like Best In Show. BIS had some very funny moments and the characters were very well developed. AMW seemed to wander too much but maybe I expected more. Is Waiting For Guffman worth renting?

Just got through watching Identity and was rather surprised. A pretty good suspense/mystery/thriller that keeps you in the dark and will twist you up in the end.

waiting for guffman is pretty overrated in my book.  very funny parts but i think i laughed maybe once.  it's 'intelligent comedy.'  wit.  you'll laugh in your head.  but i didn't find it as hysterical as other ppl.

as for my own rentals, i rented leaving las vegas and gummo.  i think i've expressed my feelings on gummo pretty well in the chloe sevigny thread.

leaving las vegas was eh...i actually rented it cuz of coffeebeetle's avatar...rekindled old intrigue in the movie.  i thought it was JUST OK.  highly highly depressing, as expected.  parts were just so over-the-top in the sheer despair quotient  i mean, the final sex scene when he basically passes out/dies (i couldn't tell which) was more absurd and comical than moving.  and that hurt puppy dog look on elisabeth shue's face got old after a while.  also, the slow-motion scenes and helicoptor shots of las vegas with the sleazy jazz music were just a little too Cinemax for me.   and why wasn't the scar or her relationship with yuri explored?  for top billing, julian sands was in the movie for less than 5 minutes.  i know this movie means a lot to people, so i don't want to piss on it entirely.  with that in mind, i will say that nic cage's performance had its brilliant moments and the impact  of the depiction of the pervasive sexuality was as bleak and troubling as I imagine it was intended.  but the movie left me wanting more.

ah shit, don't want to divert the thread topic.  let's see....

i rented "l'avventura" and i loved it, i loved more the day after though.  i sort of enjoyed "anger management", cause i'm a sentimental bastard and i love sandler.  saw "shoeshine" and loved it.

up next is "l'atalante"...anyone seen this???
and then a whole lot of godard and truffuat. and the 'blue, white, red' trilogy.  god bless netflix!

sorry, i'm lazy, otherwise i would locate the chloe s. thread.  could you just give me a yay or a nay on the film gummo.  you seem to have strong opinions on the film, so you either really liked it or really hated it.  i just need to know what direction you are, cause i've always been intrigued with the film

p.s.; the guy that made it was harmony korine, right?  the guy who wrote 'kids'?  i can't remember cause i read about him awhile ago when i first saw 'kids' for the first time at 15 or so and it warped my little mind, being from a small town and being so damned innocent at the time and all that.

see gummo.  it's a bizarre and occasionally excessive film with lots of scenes of chicanery...ie: korine bullshitting around with a camera.  but other scenes are austere and intricate and provide a critical yet ultimately human look into the highly atypical characters and their rural, economically depressed environments.  also as godardian put it "it has a wonderful visual sense"

you're right, harmony korine made that movie.  he wrote the screenplay for Kids when he was only nineteen.  from what i've read he's sort of a New York party boy- grew up rich, dates chloe sevigny, friends with leonardo dicaprio/david blaine type thing.  that makes it pretty intriguing to me that he'd find so much of interest in the lives of rednecks and show them in a human light.

aside from korine, gummo, upon introspection impressed me.  see it.

thanks!  nice insight, much better than the typical, 'yeah it was good, see it'.
i swear i was just thinking, last night, cause i caught the middle of 'julien, donkey boy', how the hell does this guy survive?  i'm sure his movies make as much money as a guy makes working at pizza hut in a year.

i think it's great about him choosing his subject matter even though he's not among those people.  cause the characters he's filming aren't going to have a good opurtunity to tell their stories.  but i guess it is a bit curious how he knows enough about these settings to write about them.

Not exactly.  He grew up and lived in Nashville, TN for most of his life.  Gummo was entirely filmed around his hometown, and the majority of his cast were Nashvillians.  Inner-city Nashvillians, that is.

As he got older he moved to his grandmother's place, which is in NYC.  There's lots of more info on him here (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=harmony+korine), but not very much recent stuff.

in my personal opinion, waiting for guffman is the best of guest's movies (better than best in show or mighty wind, anyway). anger management was hilarious, i finally rented that and laughed my ass off. anybody who doesn't laugh at woody harrelson in a dress has something very wrong with them.

I still mainly rent VHS. Even with new releases, the majority of my rentals lately have been VHS simply because they were only available copies left. Most of my renting is from the old $1 or so aisles no one goes down. They are all VHS and I mainly travel those areas.

I don't MISS it, but I still rent VHS films.. but that's only because its the only thing available. For example, recently I've rented Pandora's Box, Raise the Red Lantern, and the Phantom of Liberty..
Now I'm in Canada so I'm fucked for Netflix and these aren't the most accessible films for me to get on DVD.. so in that respect, I still have a love for videotapes.

not at all. in fact baraka is one of my favorite movies. i even enjoyed koyaanisqatsi until the last ten minutes. i found the footage of the space shuttle exploding followed by the postscript stuff about god punishing humans, pieces of fire falling from the sky, etc (don't remember it word for word) to be downright offensive.

i basically got this message from the end of the film: god punished humans by blowing up this space shuttle. you screwed up earth, and He won't let you screw up space. the end.

the last detail: thought nicholson was great as always...as was quaid. there were a few funny scenes. didn't care much for the ending, which came kind of abruptly and didn't really deal much w/ quaid's character, who was kind of the focus of the story. overall, it was decent.

watched the shooting last night (as per PTA's recommendation) and it was quite something. i really liked it...it was like a film noir on horses. very good performances, intriguing storyline and great direction. the ending was ambiguous and kind of plot-twisty, but i really liked it. i love westerns like that -- where it's some kind of unique situational setup. in this one a mysterious woman hires two cowboys to escort her across the desert. it kind of reminds me of a sitcom (two zany dads adopt a girl and live in an apartment!). anyway, i find that stuff cool.

it was the first monte hellman pic i've seen, and i was quite impressed.

That is awesome, I love that stuff too, the sitcom-like set ups...maybe it's just cause I love sitcoms but I think that stuff can work in movies too. I'm definitely going to check that one out sooner than I originally was, it sounds really fun...I also had no idea Monte Hellman had done it, never seen anything by him.

Anyway, for myself, on the way from Netflix, some stuff I missed out on....

-Trees Lounge
-Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
-Blue (of the Colors trilogy)

The Paper - I liked it besides a great deal of faults to it. The best part was the natural and lively environment it created for the newsroom. The bad part, as usual, were the plot devices thrown in there that hung to the side (sappy story of keaton and tomei and were it leads to, duvall's search for acceptance from daughter). Its not that I don't believe the frantic life of the job doesn't cause this, but its obvious the movie knew its limitations and tried to extend the message as far as it could. That's not necessary because if we live with these men, many of their problems in life in the bigger picture can be imagined and debated by us.

beware of a holy whore -- pretty indifferent towards this one. neither loved it nor hated it; only the second fassbinder i've seen, so i'll have to see more.

the man on the train -- disappointed in this one. it had some clever moments, but overall i didn't think it had much to say. yeah, each one wished they could have the other's life....big deal.

ride in the whirlwind -- didn't like it as well as i liked the shooting, but it was good nonetheless. the tone of the two films is very different. hellman is a very interesting director, and i'm glad i found some of his stuff.

Signed up to an online rental place a while back, only just noticed this thread though. Seems like a good place to pick up recommendations, I'm quite interested in The Shooting

Three Colours Blue - Great. Really liked it. The use of music was amazing.

Red Beard - Cinematography was brilliant. I didn't really care about the slow pace because as a film fan there was always some great shot to perk me up - like the one in the well.

Catch 22 - Again brilliant cinematography. I love Mike Nichols, his stuff is just so well thought through. Director, Editor, Cinematographer and writer are so well coordinated they pull off some great stuff. The stuff in the planes is really impressive. The Soderbergh and Nichols commentary was interesting - lots of stories and 'how did you do that's'

Last Picture Show - Still to come.

My current place of employment (hell) allows me to get free rentals.  So this is what I've watched recently:

HOME MOVIE: See my post in the Director's Chair.  Crap.
SO CLOSE: Decent Hong Kong chick-action flick.  Decent enough that it will be remade.
FREAKY FRIDAY (new one): A little weak until the 'switch,' but once it does, the movie really works.  Jaime Lee Curtis is great.
INTOLERABLE CRUELTY: Read the script, thought it could be great.  Marginally enjoyed it, forgettable.
BRING THE PAIN & BIGGER AND BLACKER: Chris Rock stand-up is just wonderful.  I never want to see Head of State.
JUNK: Japanese heist/zombie movie.  Gigantic piece of shit.
CONFIDENCE: Hoffman is great, the movie is not.  What a horrible, abrupt ending.
PHONE BOOTH: :?
CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS: Great, still arguing w/ friends about the truth and lies.
OPEN RANGE: Fuckin' kick ass.  A great, classical western.  Best shootout in recent memory.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO: I wish Rodriguez would have just made a Johnny Depp movie instead.  He came close.
UNDERWORLD: Ass warmed over.  All this movie was missing was a gratuitous bullet-time shot to make the rip-off complete.
T3: You know, I really liked this.  A lot.  And the ending too.

Not really a rental, since I watched it at the media library, but I watched Jacques Tati's Play Time.  I had no idea what it was about before seeing it and was totally bewildered by it.  I'm intrigued enough to watch it again.  Sad that this film bankrupted Tati.

Despite feeling like I have no spare time, I manage to see all of this stuff.

LOVE LIZA: Angst, huffing, and Hoffman sounds like a wonderful cinematic souffle.  It collapsed.
RUN RONNIE RUN: A fucking abortion.
AMERICAN SPLENDOR: Masterpiece.  Made me weepy for my homeland.
THE SEARCHERS: Moderately enjoyed it, though I realized I kept watching it b/c I 'should' see it.
LEGALLY BLONDE: Finally saw it, wish I hadn't.
TEENAGE CAVEMAN: This is the biggest piece of ammo ever for the 'Clark is a fucking pervert and not a filmmaker' argument.  Utterly worthless crap.
SUPER TROOPERS: For every joke that succeeds, four do not.  Brian Cox needs to be tanked in more movies.
LOST IN TRANSLATION: It's still good.
COWBOY BEBOP THE MOVIE: *shrug*
THE TRANSPORTER: The fight scenes work, the 45 minutes of crap between them do not.  Jason Statham is actually pretty decent.
WILLARD: Wonderful.  Great movie.  Great dvd.  Comes off like a fable or children's story, reminds me of when Tim Burton used to be good.
IN THE CUT: Jane Campion = crazy person.  The implosion of the film is something that should be tought as a guide 'how-not-to-construct-a-story' to future generations.
LOST IN LA MANCHA: It's so depressing to see someone's dream explode in their face, but surprisingly compelling.
CQ: Surprisingly decent, though I wish Coppola would have gone all the way and really done a full-on homage to 8 1/2 (having Giancarlo in the movie was not an accident).
COFFY: Bad movie, great fun.  Pam Grier is a fox.

From what I heard, yeah.  It didn't fare well at all critically, and even worse financially.  A friend described him as "the seriously untalented Coppola," so I expected the worst.  What I got was something very well put together and interesting.  Or perhaps 'DAZZLING!'  and 'FASCINATING!'

But like I said, I wish the film would have gone one step further blurring the lines between Dragonfly, Davies' life, and his documentary.  That being said, I still got a kick out of it (and that dvd is pretty neat too).

I'd love to meet your friend... I think he or she was right about this. Can anyone specify what they found so charming about CQ? I thought the charming elements could've added up to a decent twenty-minute short, maybe, but it just stretched on and on... and on... there just didn't seem to be much there, to me. I mean, not much at all. "Slight" is a very diplomatic way of putting how I felt about the film.

I loved it for many of the same reasons you liked Morvern Callar (which I liked but not as much as you) -- it was elusive and poetic, an evocation of a certain period but more importantly of a struggle between the commercial and the personal aesthetics of art -- which, as an artist dealing constantly with that very struggle, rung very true to me.

Post by: modage on February 19, 2004, 02:35:23 PM
i also liked how the movie about a filmmaker struggling with making a personal 'important' film and a big fun B picture is being MADE because the filmmaker was struggling with whether to make a personal film or a fun one.  so he made both.  i also love how the whole movie you're so interested in what he's going to do with the film that his girlfriend is completely in the background.  and when you get to the end of the film and she leaves him, he realizes that she was the best thing going and he completely ignored her the same way the audience does.  his redeeming film all about her makes the ending sort of sad.  i dunno, i just love it.  the look/design is fantastically well done.  i think its funny.  i love the cast.  and i think it takes the best elements of some of those old 60s movies about movies (Day for Night, 8 1/2) and blends them with the hugely stylistic B movies (Danger: Diabolik, Barbarella).  i love it.

1. I love the setting. Paris in the late 60's is fun for a cinephile.
2. Little cameos put a smile on my face.
3. I find the main actor to be generally interesting.
4. Like the way Roman shot it, enjoyed the mixture of stocks/techniques, etc.
5. Good looking girls.
6. The score was a perfect fit for the film.
7. The idea of the story -- this young nobody getting to take over a film and meeting a hottie actress is a personal dream of mine.
8. Nice and short and didn't take itself too seriously (which is just what its subject matter demanded).
9. Above all was a quirky little love story movie-in-a-movie, and didn't take any major mis-steps to violate the coolness of that.
10. Referenced movies I like.

For some reason I this is the only way I feel like 'reviewing' these days:

BARBERSHOP: Marginally entertaining, one (me) wonders if the humor would have gotten a boost w/ an R rating.  Still though, moderately enjoyable and quite harmless.
A MIGHTY WIND: Let's see what's wrong w/ this one: no character development, boring musical numbers, woeful lack of laughs, and the cheapest joke ever-- Shearer's cross-dressing resolution.  What the hell happened w/ this one?  Willard is funny as always though, provided the only laughs.
MATCHSTICK MEN: Because I've seen, you know, movies before, the *twists* were seen coming four score and seven years before they happened.  I really hate Ridley Scott.
MORVERN CALLAR: Lynne Ramsey = female David Gordon Green.  Technically wonderful and acted to perfection.  The story almost meandered out of my reach, but I still enjoyed it.
THE TOWN IS QUIET: And I am sleeping.
THIRTEEN: The end of the 2nd act is weak *RIMSHOT!* but it wraps up nice and there's some good acting by the ladies.  I felt dirty watching the Kip Pardue scene.
8 WOMEN: I don't know what to make of this one.  Campy, stilted, insane, goofy, and just plain bonkos.  Ozon clearly knows this, so I can't fault him for it.  Lordy, did little Ludivine grow up fast.
PYROKINESIS: Japanese 'Firestarter.'  Seriously.  Nice effects of people being burned to to a crisp, but otherwise quite dull and not one that will be remade soon.  But who knows.

EDIT: Haggard grammar.

I watched quite a few movies the last few days.

I have commented on Seabiscuit and Once Upon a Time in Americain their respected threads.

I also just finished Marathon Man, which I enjoyed.  It's a good thriller with quite a few memorable scenes.  It's interesting with an old Laurence Olivier and a young Dustin Hoffman and their 2 different schools of acting style.  The film worked better in parts than as a whole for me, but that's most thrillers.

I also experienced my first Tati film with Mr Hulot's Holiday, it has some really great gags and moments.  Although under 90 minutes, I still found myself bored.  I enjoyed it and I want to see more of Tati's stuff, but I wasn't blown away.  I think the film would be better upon repeat viewings.

I'm currently watching Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, and hope to go to Tripletts of Belleville tomorrow and part of me wants to get around to seeing Eurotrip, in a guilty way.  Blow-Up is still on the tab as well.

Some of the films I rented recently:

Of Mice and Men - Sinise was great casting. I didnt really like the bookends of him on the train. And the final scene I thought was handled too coldly compared to the book. Overall though I thought it was pretty good.

All the Presidents Men - Great. Real edge of the seat stuff.

The Maltese Falcon - Overall I enjoyed, would have preferred if the secretary had been fleshed out a bit more - I think it needed a likeable female lead. Its refreshing to watch a crime film that doesn't treat you like an idiot.

The Conversation - What really stands out for me was that final shot. Fantastic.  Great score, too.

Swimming with Sharks - Entertaining enough but the "this isnt one of those stories" narration at the beginning really felt unecessary. And kind of bugged for the rest of the film.

Quote from: RaviI rented The Office last night.  The DVD of the first series includes a 40 minute documentary and 10 minutes worth of deleted scenes.  Is there a second series?  It was very funny.

Yeah. And two great half-hour Christmas specials that rounded the whole thing off brilliantly. Last ever episodes.

Maybe. The case of the couple he was trailing felt kind of weak to me. The real story was about Hackmans character and because I didnt connect to the case he was working on at all it just really felt like diversion to me. So despite being a fitting way to open, I'd still pick the last shot.

thank God for the library (my dad made me cancel netflix...)

Agnes Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7 - a fluid narrative that meanders a bit but that's overlookable due to the film's free-spirited nature... after all, it's New Wave (probably my favorite era in all of cinema).  Varda's work may be slightly less mature than Godard's or Truffaut's but is just as potent in its ability to capture the essence of both Paris and life on film.  Wonderful experience... a gem.

Akira Kurosawa's Scandal - This is one of Kurosawa's earlier efforts and, though not as tightly wound or precisely executed, stands as a testament to the man's genius. Scandal (a film I didnt know existed) fits perfectly in Kurosawa's cannon, a scathing commentary of society -- in this case the media -- and human nature that ultimately affirms life and gives hope.  How Kurosawa does it is beyond me, because Scandal is, for the most part, ridiculously bitter.  But by the end I was in tears.  Not his best work, but that doesn't say much for a man who's considered a god in the world of cinema, and rightfully so.  Highly recommended for Kurosawa lovers and cineastes alike.

I don't have cable, so this is what I watch:

WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: See my gushing post elsewhere.  Just wonderful.
WINDTALKERS: I turned it off an hour in.  What a total piece of fucking garbage.  What the hell happened to John Woo?  Oh, that's right, he's a sell-out whore.
UNFAITHFUL: Diane Lane is hot.  Richard Gere murdering people w/ snow globes is not.  What a ludicrous turn to take in the movie.  Blah.
THE UNTOUCHABLES: Loved it when I was a kid, hadn't watched it in a really long time.  And wow, Kevin Costner was really bad in this movie.  Some of his line delivery is sooooooo horrendous.  "Didn't you hear what I said?  What is this, a game?"  Despite the haggard acting, a lot of things still hold up, namely DePalma's stylistic flourishes and Connery's performance.  And how could you not love DeNiro's baseball speech?  It's movies like this that remind me that DePalma's better as a hired gun and not as the originator of his material.
INTERNAL AFFAIRS: Lord knows why I picked this up.  My dad always mentioned to me that Richard Gere was a 'good bad guy' in this, so why not?  The movie is rehashed-by-the-numbers Hollywood cop-storytelling, and surprisingly enough, written by Henry Bean and directed by Mike Figgis.  Where the movie almost succeeds is taking the 'affairs' part of the title literally.  The story is very sexual, and the dialogue even more so (some of Gere's dialogue would make Howard Stern blush).  Andy Garcia is a hot-headed Latin, married and monogamous, Gere's a whore, will fuck anything on two-legs, and has more kids than fingers.  And Gere wants to fuck Garcia's wife, just to teach him a lesson.  If the cop story had been dialed down a bit, the sexual politics upped a couple notches, the story might have actually been something interesting.
AMERICAN WEDDING: I didn't laugh once, and the not even the prospect of Nikki Ziering's big fake tits could keep me interested.
BLACK HAWK DOWN: First impression in theatres: big thumbs down, too mired in Saving Private Ryan's style and storytelling to take it seriously.  Second viewing a few years later: I'm much kinder to it.  There's no denying the film is extremely well put together, and it's even harder to deny that the film is pretty entertaining just as a pure action flick.  While I might not get all weepy and patriotic, I'll settle for some tight contemporary warfare-action.
RETURNER: Japanese sci-fi/action movie now on dvd.  It's basically: Richard Kelly meets Spielberg meets the Matrix.  If you see it, you'll get the analogy.  Not enough action.
THE HILLS HAVE EYES: Saw it is a kid, liked it.  Now I can't even get past how fucking 70's this movie is-- in a bad way.  Bad 70's filmmaking, bad 70's acting, bad 70's music, bad 70's everything.

More more more how do you like it how do you like it more more more:

THE BUSINESS OF STRANGERS: Is this movie based on a play?  Because it's as fucking staged and confined as one.  The peformances by Channing and Stiles are fine, but that's as good as the compliments can get.  Ultimately, the story builds to a 'men are evil' climax that's never quite earned, and another final twist of sorts negates said climax, making the whole affair quite unsatisfying.
DECADE UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Hogwash.  See my rant in the Xixax awards.
DAY OF THE DEAD: For some ungodly reason, I'd never even knew this movie had existed until the new Anchor Bay dvd was released.  While the acting may be stilted (though I expected it), I actually found it to be quite a wonderful film.  28 Days Later seems to have lifted plenty from this flick-- military men thinking they're in charge, yet end up being more ghastly then the monsters themselves-- which makes Boyle's collapsed finale even more transparent.   The end to Romero's trilogy (for now, unless Dead Reckoning ever gets made) is a satisfying conclusion of sorts, and there's a definite arc to all three films that I didn't expect from, well, zombie movies.  Sure, the mayhem doesn't really hit till the final 40 minutes, but the setups are all there for the conclusion.  It really does work.  Also, Roger Avary's commentary is also worth a listen just for the sheer fact that his enthusiasm for zombies and cinema is quite infectous.
WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP: Amazing.  See my other post in Dvd Talk.
SCHOOL OF ROCK: I love Mike White.  Again, he's created a sublimely fun outsider story that works w/in the typical 'Hollywood structure,' yet has the smarts to transcend it.  I also really dig 'Orange County,' which I was truly prepared to loathe.  Linklater's direction is paint-by-numbers, but there's nothing I could truly fault him for.  He let Jack Black take his performance way past over-the-top (it worked for me), and the kids were all perfectly cast.  I hate to sound corny, but this was the first movie I'd seen in ages that I could describe as... joyous.  It was great to see the kids rock out at the end, and I loved the musical messages the film offered.  How this film didn't do better at the box office baffles me, though I suspect it will have a long life on the dvd format.
TEARS OF THE SUN: No character, no setup, just absolute garbage.  Proof that Fuqua really just stumbled ass-backwards into 'Training Day' and really is the hack-extraordinaire everyone thought he was before that film took off.

Just rented "Parenthood", I think it was a best picture winner back in '89. I guess I liked it, I'm not really sure, I can't decide. There were certainly things that annoyed me. Like I hated the whole thing with Rick Moranis as the controlling father, that seemed like it was something being played for a joke that should be played for a joke. I didn't really see the humor in the girl being used like that. But other than that, I think I really liked it. Keanu Reeves was pretty funny. Robards was brilliant as always. That guy from Animal House was fucking hilarious, he really stole every scene he was in pretty much. Anyway, I don't know what else to say I guess. Some scenes were so brilliant that they outshined others. Like the part where the girl threw up, that was amazing. That totally startled me, I wasn't expecting that to happen at all. And the way she cried afterwards was so so so REAL. It reminded me of the way my sister use to cry after throwing up in the past. I guess all I can say is it's definitely my favorite Ron Howard film.

I also rented "A Pickup on South Street" which as I figured, I should have just blind bought. It was just total movie-cool, total slickness. I loved it. It didn't seem forced or over the top despite it's coolness either, that I also liked. I wanna see more Sam Fuller after seeing his cameo in "Pierrot le Fou", that quote of his is fucking great....."film is a battleground...." and that whole thing.....I love that quote. He seems like a real maverick. This is a real classic, this film of his. I can't wait to buy it.

Well, I like the movie, as do many others.  Fuqua was just another video/commercial director w/ crappy features under his belt (Replacement Killers and Bait).  Training Day put his career back on track and it showed that he might have learned from his previous mistakes.  Tears of the Sun shows that was just a fluke.  We could argue if TD is good/bad, but there's no denying that it did well and garnered 2 Oscar noms for the leads.

I wouldn't say I thought it was crap.  It was grossly overrated, though.   Denzel was great as usual, though giving him the Oscar for that and not Malcolm X is an atrocity.  Hell, Denzel was better in He Got Game and he didn't even get a nod for that.

Denzel was great in Training Day, but Ethan Hawke?  Come on.  Not that  he was bad, he was fine, but he didn't deserve an Oscar nod.  That's like if Mel Gibson had been nominated for Lethal Weapon 2.  Hawke was good but that nomination will baffle me as much as My Big Fat Greek Wedding getting a nod for Best Original Screenplay.

I thought Training Day was worth the price of admission but I'm just saying the hype was a bit much for what it delivered. If it was Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Wahlberg in that movie, it would been BLASTED by just about everyone.

Not quite.  The point is that a great actor can help a bad script be a good movie.  A great director can help a bad script become a good movie.  But Training Day is not a great movie but it has great actors so either the director did something wrong or the script was the antichrist of screenplays. I personally don't think the script was awful; it was adequate.

And I stand by my statement that if Sam and Marky Mark were in Training Day, we'd all be talking about how bad it was right now.

New stuff and re-watches:

21 GRAMS: *Insert the same questions that everyone's mentioned about the merits/problems with the film's structure, yet qualified by saying that the actors are all great here* Also, um, wasn't the Watts/Penn plot an R-rated version of 'Return to Me'?  Benicio's story was my fave.
THE HUNTED: What a strange strange movie.  So underwritten and simple that I actually found myself searching for *some* messages and meaning, disbelieving that the story couldn't be this threadbare, that Friedkin had another agenda.  My conclusion?  Nothing.  But the knife fight was amazing.  Connie Nielson needs to stop being 'the chick' in the action movie.
THE MISSING: Almost as threadbare as The Hunted (I'm beginning to see connections between the films I got here), and ultimately even more pointless.  And what an awful, stupid ending.  Ron Howard is the prime hack-extraordinaire... only this asswipe could find a way to under/mis-use Cate Blanchett.  Ugh.
THE SHAPE OF THINGS: Hadn't seen it since release, and loved it even more than the first viewing.  When the two birds come on screen, I want to applaud.
RUNAWAY JURY: A friend summed this up as 'good as a really great episode of 'The Practice'.  Sadly, I hate The Practice, and all tired-legal-hogwash thrillers.  It's a shame that Hackman and Hoffman finally got together not to act, but to get paychecks.
ED WOOD (the new dvd): Hadn't seen it in years, and now is definitely my favorite Burton film.  Why wasn't the world jumping all over Depp's jock when this came out?  The dvd is great too, a lot of nice features, here's hoping the mouse house don't screw the pooch on the eventual release.
NORTHFORK: Sure, it's pretty to look at, but I got as much from this movie as I would have if I spent an hour staring at some Ansel Adams.  Someone call the Coen Brothers and tell them that the Polish boys are going through their garbage.
PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT: This film's message is more important and poignant than ever.  Watch it again.  Now.
MAN ON THE MOON: I still don't like it.  After watching this and 'Flynt,' I actually thought, "man, they really underused Courtney Love."  And she's a crack-ho!  Also, if I want to see Kaufman's works, I'll watch the originals, not 2 hours of re-creations.
POOTIE TANG: Okay, some friends rave about this movie (of course qualified with the admission that is awful), and the Onion recently ran a piece about Louis C.K. and what happened to the flick since release.  So my curiousty was piqued.  At 82 minutes and at times non-sensical, this movie is a studio abortion.  But... that being said, I know for a fact that there's SOMETHING going on... a film hiding somewhere behind the tacked on VO and mis-mash editing.  There are some amazingly inspired moments, and I can't help but believe that (dare I say) the director's cut of this flick would be really terrific.  It's now my goal to find the original version of Pootie.

EDIT: forgot to mention the 'Tang.

One of my very favorite films.  I love Burt Lancaster in this movie.  It's such a sharp and unconventional noir (a genre that I love), and like you mentioned both very dark and very cynical... it's an unpleasant movie but so ridiculously entertaining for a film of that nature.  I really liked the cinematography too.  Understated perhaps but is strangely vertie, which in itself is ahead of its time (i like that you said that about the film).  Glad you liked it, since some people on this board seem to have issues with watching (and appreciating) classics.... willingly anyway.

Since you liked Sweet Smell of Success try out All About Eve...and if you've seen it already, what did you think?

Some scraps:

MEMORIES: Tryptich of anime stories by 3 masters of the form.  Sadly, I couldn't get all the way through, was bored senseless.
LETHAL WEAPON 2: Call me a chump, but I have a special place in my heart for this series.  Part two certainly has the biggest stones of the three (the protagonist body count is surprisingly high), and delivers on both comedy and action fronts.  I forgot how great the toilet scene was.
WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN: Love that Pedro!  Damn, what a fun flick.  The first half hour of the flick is incredibly stylized and put together, slowly revealing the relationships, but once we get the goods, the farce sets in, the style receeds, and it works even better.  Can't recommend it enough.
MY LIFE WITHOUT ME: I was iffy about getting this one, but seeing after seeing that Almodovar was a producer on it, I conceeded.  Sadly, the movie's a disappointment.  My problems lie w/ Polley's character, specifically that it's pretty difficult to feel sorry for her, considering some of the (dare I say) selfish choices she makes.  Ruffalo and Speedman should have switched parts IMHO.  Yet again, Ruffalo is just great in every scene.  I could watch this guy read the phone book.  It's a shame he's not in better flicks.

Reviewum vomitus:

CHERISH: I hate movies that try to throw in cool pop songs just for the sake of it, it drives me batty.  This flick even advertises it on the dvd cover!  Needless to say, my expectations were nil.  But geez Louise, did this movie work.  Kitschy pop/love songs play a crucial part in this flick, and it seriously takes its usage to a whole new level.  Robin Tunney plays a nerdy chick accused of murdering a cop, which was really caused by her stalker/almost-abductor, and is forced to wear a electronice ankle bracelet while she's under house arrest and awaiting trial.  Tim Blake Nelson plays the deputy in charge of said bracelet and turns out to be a quite fascinating leading man (whoda thunk it after seeing his turn in 'O Brother Where Art Thou?').  The film is a blend of genres... comedy, drama, romance, suspense... you name it.  The scene where the villain dances to 'Private Eyes' is one of the most wonderful things I've seen in ages.  Going to have to track down what else director Finn Taylor has done.
DIRTY PRETTY THINGS: The movie's marketing campaign is misleading.  It's certainly not an Audrey Tautou vehicle, and it's certainly not a Hitchcockian thriller.  What this flick really reveals itself to be is a compelling drama about immigrants forced to do drastic things to survive in a foreign land.  Frears proves once again that he's a force to be reckoned with, capable of tackling any genre and suceeding.
THE MAGDALENE SISTERS: God bless Peter Mullan.  Not only is he a terrific actor, but also a splendidly talented director.  And what a first feature!  A compelling work and also proof positive why I loathe the religion I was raised with.  The movie was terrifying/creepy enough just as a standalone story, but even more so by the fact that the shit happened less than 50 years ago!
VERONICA GUERIN: I'm all about sticking up for yourself and stories of sticking it to 'the man' and doing what's right, but dammit if I didn't spend a lot of this movie wondering why Veronica just didn't get some goddamned sense and back off.  I mean, how could she have not seen her fate coming?  Perhaps my quibbles are with the real life-story and not the actual film, but after seeing Cate get the shit beat out of her to the tune of multiple uses of the 'see you next tuesday' word, I couldn't honestly give a shit what happened next.  There's a line between bravery and flat-out stupidity, and it was crossed.  Blanchett was compelling as always, but I just couldn't give 2 craps how it all wrapped up.  As bizarre as it all sounds, I can't blame Schumacher or Bruckheimer for what happens, moreso the real-life Guerin for her acts

I got this from Netflix on Friday (and I'm assuming others did):

We hope you're enjoying the convenience and selection of Netflix. Our goal has always been to offer a great service at a great price, and we're dedicated to bringing you the largest library of films delivered quickly to your home.

Since launching our service almost four years ago, the subscription rate for the 3-at-a-time program has never changed. We've added more than 20 distribution centers in order to provide one business day delivery to most of our members. We've also expanded our library by thousands of titles and now offer more than 18,000 to choose from. thanks. good choice neon. i can't believe i didn't like this movie the first time i saw it. it was rill good! dunst i always like, i'm a bit partial. it didn't really seem like anybody had a part in this movie. it just seemed to go. so dunst was in it for very little, even thought she was in it a lot. i don't know, i guess sophia successfully captured that feeling of remembering an old memory (which she also did in lost in translation. which i think i liked better).

That film within the film is supposed to be Cat People, and Douglas's character is loosely based on David O Selznick. Dick Powell's author character is based on Margaret Mitchell when her and Selznick were making Gone With The Wind, and Lana Turner's character is based on John Barrymore's daughter.

I love that film.

You must expound on this, like, in the Bertolucci thread.  Because, while I thought the ending was a bit weak, I can't deny the greatness of the film as a whole, and the excellent performance by Brando.  So yes.  And see The Dreamers.  Or, wait, don't, because if you didn't like Last Tango, you'll probably LOATHE The Dreamers.

Which Blue?  There's two.  TOOoD is good.  Blue is good, too.  Don't know about the other two, but TSH is supposed to be good, too.  I'd only see Kieslowski's Blue if I had White and Red to immediately follow.  They're better as a collection.  Knowing you and your love of Lynch, I'd say see TOOoD.

in my search for 'diamonds in the rough' i watched this tonite hoping for a gem.  i had heard good things about it, (ebert gave it 3 stars) and thought it was worth a shot. it was okay.  part 1984, part matrix, part total recall, etc. but not as good as any. some interesting ideas here (mostly because they originate from elsewhere) and it seems like they did a good job making it on a small budget, but its not something i would recommend.  and if i hadnt said it enough before, christian bale has weird lips.  that is all.

A friend made me see that. Putting aside the fact that it's a complete 1984 rip off, some of the most amazing action scenes ever. Definitely rivals the best Matrix fights. Even though they used the cheesy "shoot the fight scenes slow and speed them up" technique.

so i watched sweet hereafter (duderino spoke first, after all). that was pretty heavy viewing, though, i must admit, after hearing everybody talk about it i thought it would be a lot heavier. i thought they would play up on that "town with no children" issue, but it really stayed pretty central to ian holm's character. if anybody hasn't seen it and likes introspective character studies (as i do), rent this one. i wouldn't watch it again though, i don't think. though i'm sure i could get more out of it with a repeat viewing. hmmm... maybe i'll hang onto it and watch with commentary. does anybody know if the commentary is any good?

i just watched the original Cape Fear tonite for the first time (i havent seen the Scorsese one in years), so i cant compare off the top of my head, but i can say that this one was quite good.  it didnt waste any time getting into it, and the last act was just brilliantly staged suspense.  robert mitchum was an excellent psychopath yet again, (although i think i still preferred Night of the Hunter), but this would make a good companion piece to that for a double feature for anyone who hasnt seen either.

i'm trying out the 5 films in the recently released Shadows, Lies and Private Eyes FILM NOIR boxset before i decide to buy it.  but if they're all near as good as this one, thats $35 as good as spent.  tonite i watched Murder, My Sweet which was another Raymond Chandler Phillip Marlowe tale, of which I've seen a few previously.  this one was quite different from the Big Sleep which i thought was a little underwhelming with pretty static direction (of actors and look and pacing).  this one was filled with twists, great cinematography and the best dialogue.  the coen bros. kept coming to mind as they've said they have gotten inspiration from chandlers writing and it was certainly evident here.  i'd also never seen Dick Powell in anything before but he was great in the role.  this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and anyone who says they dont like old movies should watch this anyways.

working my way through the boxset, which looks like it will be a purchase soon, i watched Gun Crazy and Asphalt Jungle.  gun crazy was a pretty good bonnie and clyde like tale, although a little silly in a reefer madness sort of way where you could see them drawing a bit of a line between 'look parents!  you think your kids are just playing with bb guns innocently now, but look where that can lead!'  but, the thing that kept the movie from being just a relic was that it never turned its characters into cariactures.  they were always sympathetic and with every wrong move they made you still wanted to see them be okay.  it was a pretty skillfull manuever considering how easy it would've been to demonize the characters.   the asphalt jungle was also pretty good.  it was a heist movie that seemed to be the forerunner of the killing (also starring sterling hayden).  and although i preferred the killing, where that movie focused more on the heist, this one really focused on the characters who all had to receive their comeupence.  and the final moments were pretty darn sad.

i guess i'll make this quick since no one cares.  i finished up the film noir boxset with The Setup and Out of the Past.  The Setup was an interesting movie because where i thought it would show the fight and have the character decide whether he would take a fall or not and move onto the repercussions, the whole movie takes place during the fight practically.  a lot of the way the fight was filmed reminded me of Raging Bull, (i imagine on the commentary Scorsese probably says something to this effect.)  it was pretty good.  Out of the Past had a great setup, but just didnt quite pull together a great film.  the dialogue wasnt quite snappy enough or there wasnt quite enough emotional turmoil, but still a good try.  i was probably too harsh because i watched it last and Murder My Sweet was SO GOOD none of the other 5 could compare.  so i RECOMMEND that one strongly to everyone and will probably end up getting this boxset soon.

I'm going to start posting what I've been watching because I watch a lot ..then you'll all want to hump my leg or something.

Before Sunrise. I see you all whoring this film so I put it on my Netflix list. (which I just signed up for a few days ago.) I fell in love with Jesse and Celine as they fell in love with eachother. Such a sense of realism.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.allmusic.com%2F00%2Fadg%2Fcov150%2FDRT100%2FT143%2Ft143046b1w8.jpg&hash=95ea39b329552584624d5c00770d92c884139b6c)

Love in The Afternoon. I  love Billy Wilder and I just adore Audrey Hepburn. I was finally able to see this film thanks to Netflix. I couldn't find it at any of the local movie rental places. But yeah, I'd fall in love with Hepburn too.  (https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.click-smilies.de%2Fsammlung0304%2Fliebe%2Flove-smiley-045.gif&hash=449912fda785a1a7e9ba65db0e19b2e069059923)

Oh I never looked in this thread before.  I dunno why...

I've been movie-binging all summer!  Netflix with 5 movies at a time.  I've kept a list of all the movies I've been watching.  Since June 10th (it's August 9th today) I've seen 59 movies--63 if you count repeated viewings.

I've been packing them in like that because I don't get to watch movies much during the school year.  2 or 3 movies a month, maybe.  So I put everything that I wanted to watch on the list and I've been having a lot of fun!  I've even managed to have a bit of an actual life and read books and write a bit, even with all the movie-mayhem going on.

Awesome Summer so far!

I remembered seeing that Wal-Mart and Blockbuster are both trying to compete with Netflix.  Of course, Wal-Mart and Blockbuster are both spawns of Satan, and Netflix seriously needs to consider opening up in Canada.  But the things some people do for movies, right?  You wanna deal with one of those two devils, you should be able to soon enough.

My third Fassbinder film (1. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul 2. The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant), and was a bit frustrated afterwards when I found out the title on the Fantoma DVD is somewhat of a misnomer - it's In a Year of 13 Moons, not With 13 Moons.  From what I can tell this has to be his most complex and unusual film.  He sort of abandons the more theatrical approach to cinema evident in Fear Eats the Soul and Petra, which is in no way a bad thing as it results in one of the best films I've ever seen - emotionally honest, cathartic, and completely unconventional in its approach in terms of style and narrative.  It's morbidly depressing, quite possibly the saddest film I've ever seen, but it's Fassbinder - I'd expect no less.  Volker Spengler's performance is genius.  Absolutely loved this movie (hence the new avatar pic), as hard as it was to watch.  Fassbinder's quickly becoming one of my very favorite directors.  Time to dig into my recently bought BRD trilogy...

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.allmusic.com%2F00%2Fadg%2Fcov150%2FDRT000%2FT049%2Ft0493134sy5.jpg&hash=48da5f4f938673e6728f8d29bbb72271f5499b97)

I was never really compelled to see this one until I started visiting this site.  It's a bit pretentious - I'd like to think I have a good tolerance for pretension for the sake of cinema - but is in its entirety an unusually moving and brutally honest film.  Gallo's portrait of a damaged man and the grace he experiences via Christina Ricci is terribly engrossing but ultimately very beautiful, poignant, and poetic.  Definitely looking forward to The Brown Bunny, which is playing here in about two weeks.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.allmusic.com%2F00%2Fadg%2Fcov150%2FDRT200%2FT229%2Ft22946tysil.jpg&hash=b66400e043ed0b98fc177175dcbe09ce2b150ae4)

Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry is one of the most beautiful, life affirming, poetic films I have ever seen.  Needless to say it's one of my absolute favorite films of all time.  So I approached this one with high expectations and they were met, just not to the degree of Taste of Cherry.  The Wind Will Carry Us - a title I love - is filled with gorgeous but patient imagery, mainly of a car driving through the beautiful vistas of Iran, and is heavily abstract to a point where I was overwhelmed with the symbols and metaphors and so on.  But I think with Kiarostami it's not necessarily about "getting" all of it rather than partaking in the film's inherent sensibility - to slow down and think.  I think that's what I love most about Kiarostami (granted that I've only seen two of his films), the way he slows life down and enlivens the senses by allowing his audience to, on their own will, live by experiencing the film rather than assaulting the audience (which, if done well, is great in itself).  That of course means that his films aren't for everybody, but for me, Kiarostami's work is as exciting and as much a cinematic revelation as my first experience with Bresson (Au Hasard Balthazar during its revival "tour").

i really really enjoyed the first hour of this. after he gets sent to prison for the murder, i didn't like it as much. then the big twist happens and there's that whole hall of mirrors thing. i just wish there was some way they could have come up with something so he never went to trial. i hated all that stuff. i'd have to agree with the cover. 3 1/2 stars.

I used to live in this thread.  Here's the insanity I watched this weekend:

THEY LIVE: Somehow, I managed to see nary a frame of this flick during my childhood.  And it stars Roddy Piper!  How did I miss this (yeah, I loved wrestling as a kid)?  Anyway... HOLY SHIT this movie is cool.  Sure, it's massively underwritten and ludicrous, but when the sunglasses come on... damn, some amazing stuff (those billboards!).  I howled often and loud, and this movie does indeed have one of the best fist fights ever.  How did I miss this?  And the movie's punchline is classic.

MEMORIES OF MURDER: If you like police procedurals and true stories, get this sucker now, this Korean flick is a fuckin' masterpiece.  A blow-by-blow account of the investigation of Korea's first serial killer, specifically how the police were totally ill-equipped to deal with things like forensics, evidence, and human rights (the film is a punishing indictment of how the cops literally tortured people to get confessions).  It's frequently tense, and not dull for a second.  Also, amusingly enough, it features what is my new favorite interrogation technique: the flying dropkick!

GOZU: Okay, this movie is pretty much unreviewable.  If you're Miike fanatic like me, you'll love it.  Lynch fans might also get a kick out of it too.  But don't expect to make any sense out of this movie.  It's insane.  Though I've read an interesting comparison to the Orpheus myth-- which actually makes huge sense in hindsight and demands a second viewing for me at least.  You will never look at soup ladels the same way ever again.

I haven't seen Oasis yet.  It's on my list of things to see very soon, along with Slimidio, Taegukgi, PTU, Dolls (the only Kitano flick I haven't seen yet), the Yakuza Papers, other Fruit Chan movies, Alive... the list is endless.

I saw this over the weekend and I must agree with you, it's great. Made me want to seek out the recordings Elvis did for Sun studio. Buscemi, Strummer, Masatoshi Nagase, and Yoki Kudo were all wonderful and perfect in their roles but to me, the real star of this film is Screamin' Jay Hawkins. When he cracks that joke about Cinque Lee's hair and then bursts into that wonderful Screamin'Jay'Hawkins laughter of his -- that was movie magic.

I netflixed Lady of Shanghai and Songs from the Second Floor, as well. Have yet to watch them.

K STREET: Soderbergh/Clooney's much maligned and never watched show about politics *gasp* is actually pretty great.  It's simple, subtle, and engrossing.  The show's best episodes though, reveal it's greatest faults-- episodes 4 and 8 (or is it 9?) are flashbacks and ditch the 'issue of the week' for straight-up plot turns and development of the leads.  These episodes are the most dramatic, the most fascinating, and seemingly the most scripted (or I guess plotted).  Perhaps if the show had pulled back on the issues a bit, it would have been more successful.  Who knows.  And curse those bastards for the finale: they knew they show was dead in the water, and they end on a major cliffhanger.  Bastards.  And oh yeah, who knew a dry erase board could yield such a magnificent twist?

SHOGUN ASSASSIN: Is there a decent, proper release of this title?  The British import I rented was a fucking abortion of a dvd.  Scope compressed/stretched to like 1.66:1 and we're forced to listen to bad English dub, no option for Japanese.  BAH!  Anyhoo, entertaining revenge/samurai flick, loved the 'sword or the ball' scene, what a riot.  If you like your blood spurting deaths, definitely worth a look.

ALIVE: Ryuhei Kitamura, director of the supremely ludicrous and entertaining Versus, serves up a supremely boring and lame sci-fi flick that pretty much takes place in one room.  Guy about to executed in the chair is given an 'out'-- participate in an experiment or die-- and from there the movie gets increasingly confusing and snooze-worthy.  There's talk of a 'foreign object' (read: alien) possessing people and giving them powers.  What are the powers?  To rip off 'The Matrix' apparently... black leather, bullet time, wire-fu... blah blah blah.  I couldn't even finish it.

Y'know, it's not really all that fun to watch, but it still felt like a necessary viewing.  Just because it's not that great of a movie doesn't mean it wasn't important, which it was.  So yeah.  No regrets watching it, but this has been done better since its release.

Self-destruction doc double feature:

DIG!: I'll admit, I'm musically retarded.  I really know nothing/care about music post-Nirvana, much less like any of it.  So the idea of watching a movie about 2 bands I knew nothing about seemed like a bad idea... Wrong!  I love love love this movie, the box's description of the flick being like being a car accident is pretty spot-on.  Watching Anton Newcombe and his band implode in front of our eyes is something to behold.  Funny, disturbing, and tragic.  The Dandy Warhols come off okay, but they're less interesting since they're well, succeeding.  But the contrast between the two bands, and their scrapes, makes for good drama.  The dvd is super loaded too.  I'd really like to see a version of this movie with two filmmakers.

BURDEN OF DREAMS: I haven't seen 'Fitzcarraldo' (sadly, I haven't seen much Herzog, but I will soon), so I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this making-of-doc.  Don't matter.  Watching Herzog's dreams/film/boat crumble before his eyes is some great stuff.  This is the kind of stuff I wished I would have seen in 'Lockness.'  I'm still amazed how 'together' Werner managed to remain despite the years of problems.  Still working, still philosophical.  No Coppola-like madness.  I'm really going to have to see 'Fitz' now, just to see what the hell he managed to make of this experience (the doc doesn't appear to give much hope).  Best scene: the boat crashing.  Again.  And again.  Wow.

Dig was fantastic. By the end of it though the singer from the Dandy Warhols began getting on my nerves. Some colorful characters in that. That tambourine player cracked me up, whats his deal? He was like the siliasruby of the band. The massacres blowups at important gigs was almost sad but funny at the same time. I loved seeing that crap. Also, this may sound bad but I was kind of dissapointed that Anton Newcombe didn't die by the end. It seemed thats where it was headed, but didn't happen.

alright this is my last post on the subject... i just want to make sure i'm understood... i acknowledge the fact that Sweetback is more well known then i thought, but i still don't agree with Pubrick that it's a "really popular film" maybe we just have different ideas on what "really popular" means.  in fact, i know we do based on a previous convo about something similar...  i'm basing my opinion on the fact i would tell people about Baadassss and how it was about MVP making Sweetback, and most people had no idea about it and hadn't heard of it.  hell, hardley anyone on the set were even familiar with it. (except the black guys, and even they admitted it's more well know in "the ghetto" and not so much elsewhere, film geeks excluded)

that's it case closed (i hope)

Squints, I watched Stray Dog today.  Very good film.  On the surface its a thriller but its also an examination of post-war Japan.  I don't think you'd be disappointed if you bought it.

Went to a couple of libraries and a Hollywood Video.  It's finals week and I get out of school at 12 PM every day.  Most of the tests should be pretty easy so I'm not worrying very much.  And now the films:

Yesterday's conversation with my girlfriend:

gf: you never like anything
me: of course, just take a look at that boxset [points to sk boxset]
gf:  :yabbse-rolleyes:
me: it's sex and the city in a hospital
gf: it's not
me: it has the annoying worthless narration and tries to be too cute
gf: not every show is Six Feet Under, but whatever, 20 more episodes to come

Grey's Anatomy really is a terrible overmelodramaticsoap opera and not in a good way. Even Sex in the city has better writing than this show. The negative about this, is that this show may manipulate the weak into watching another episode. But your gf is right, not every show can be six feet under, thank god. That show stands on it's own.

inside man on fire

fire was stupid but i was happy to find out they got rid of a denzel/radha sex subplot, i would've hated her. inside was better cos of clive who is becoming my new man crush and cos they stuck it to the man. fire had surprisingly good perf by marc anthony, lots of funny things to say about the movie overall, a great movie to yell things at.

hey it's a rental review, u get what you pay for.

I really love this, found I've been able to watch it quite a lot in the relatively short time I've owned it. I think it's partly to do with the fact that it's just cool seeing film peeps I like geeking out over movies.

i've been paying all this money for netflix, a service i used to use like crazy when it first came out, and i've had the same three movies for months now. i finally got around to watching this:

what a beautiful movie. i'm amazed by how much i enjoyed it considering the last time i sat and watched a movie was starship troopers, like, over a month ago. nothing blows up in this one.

in related news, i saw leelee sobieski dancing on a stripper pole the weekend before and thought of good ole joan burning on the stake. nice to know leelee's still alive at least.

little miss cutey patootey is in this but not in the way you might think when you read the synopsis - dude's daughter was abducted, a year later his life is still pretty much shattered. so i thought maybe she was gonna be in flashbacks but that's not the case at all. damian lewis of new/cancelled tv show Life OWNS this movie in which, sorta like ellie parker, he plays a different kind of NUTCASE in every scene. it's not meant to be funny though and he'll have you alternately hating his character, being bored by him and ultimately hoping against hope that he'll make it through without destroying himself. lodge kerrigan of Clean Shaven/criterion fame did this, and he restrains the showiness of the title role by maintaining an atmosphere of indifference which really pays off.

similar to The Woodsman in terms of a man fighting against himself in order to live with himself. his mental torment is depicted such that it grips you in key moments, especially if you're the kind of person who likes to yell shit at the screen like me. personal redemption remains my all time favourite theme, so take that into account along with my recommendation.

this was kinda boring wasn't it? not worth finding the actual thread. the best part was the crazy shit towards the end when we see the origin of the "contract", dude swallows a star! that's really awesome. also a big fan of endless tears. otherwise nothing to recommend unless you're already a fan. no wonder wallace and gromit beat it, and that was pretty forgettable too.

i wanna jump on the joe wright horse drawn carriage. my best friend's gf LOVES the BBC version and will die by colin firth's side. i hav no attachment to the book or previous incarnations of the story, so this pretty much rules as far as i'm concerned. HOWEVER -- on the dvd extras i watched an "alternate US ending" -- did you freaks see a different version? our cut ends with *spoiler* the scene where donald sutherland has given his consent and then summons darcy and giggles to himself -- cut to credits *spoiler* whereas the alternate US ending adds a further unnecessary scene. but i guess if you didn't love it by that point, a redundant final scene wouldn't make a difference. my only real complaint is i don't like keira knightley's lower jaw, her chin protrudes and her teeth are giving themselves constant curbies.

classic rental. i kept hearing about how this was unjustly ignored by the world. and it is. after his WTF "performance" in Scott Beowulf 3D, i didn't think it would be so soon until malkovich was redeemed. this is just a bizarre movie that benefits greatly from his aloof persona. tom ripley isn't a pretty boy anymore, and all that remains of his homsexuality (bi?) are malkovich's gentle voice and predilection for anal intercourse. ! no kidding. writing capsule reviews is fun.

I agree the scene's totally unnecessary, but my girlfriend would start a riot if she ever saw a version of the movie that didn't have it.  I think it's a hormonal thing.

Does anybody here use the netflix instant viewing thing?

we don't have any TV channels, but an s-video cable out from a laptop and into the TV makes Netflix a decent stand-in for cable.

I loved all three, sadly the Third Man dvd was scratched so I missed a couple of minutes, I don't think I missed much, Orson was great and when he is revealed it felt pretty iconic. Also started to hear soderbergh's commentary but couldn't finish it because I had to return it, in fact I'd have liked to watch again all three.

Le deuxième souffle is my first Melville and it took me some time to get into the film but in the end it was pretty great and I look forward to see more of him.

Finally, Encounters at the end of the world is pretty stunning, it's also my first Herzog  and I loved it, I will buy this for sure eventually, and everyone should check it out if you haven't seen it.

This is a brilliant adaptation of a wonderful play. Reminds me of my relationship with one of my best friends, although I trust my friend and my friend trusts me while these two men do not. They challenge each other and are totally honest with each other. Very powerful stuff.

I found out a long time ago about fox 'news' but this was an interesting look at the gestation of the 'news' channel and how it came to be what it is today. What certain phrases wre used, The incidents and tatical ways they produced what they wanted to show rather than what was actualy truth was astounding in how exactly it was done. I don't watch the cable channel because a: I like informed opinions and not just yelling when I want the facts and b: my head hurts and my face recoils whenever I hear Glenn Beck or Bill o'reilly's voice. This was fine, solid I guess. Its just so repugnant in its ordinariness. I guess I was just hoping too much for something more inventive or involved. Let down again by another formulaic movie. Its possible that because Gervais wasn't intrinsically involved it fell kinda flat. David Koepp is wonderful at adapting films for other people like Spielburg but his footing when it comes to picking stories and directing falls flat.

Any one who says that Sally Field can't act is A: very narrow-minded and B: has never seen this film. She's breathtaking in this docudrama about the woman who was the first real legitimate dealing with dissociative personality disorder. Its really an out of this world performance in this TV miniseries which was actually cut into two hour and a half pieces over two weeks. The other stand out is the sound design, phenomenal stuff and those two things make what could have been a hacky or ordinary film about a extremely disturbed woman into something powerful and emotionally shattering. I've always like Sally Field but after this she has my upmost respect for the lady now. Search this out.

Looks like today was a double feature featuring crazy people. Its pure cinema...pure and simple. Starring Peter Greene in only his 3rd film role, he portrays a schizophrenic father who wants his daughter back. He gets involved in a murder investigation that goes awry and its shot from mainly the perspective of the main character. It had almost no dialogue and pretty stark images. Brilliant film that found itself very impressionable to me.

Missing.

A ripping drama about a grieving fathers search for his idealistic writer son in 1973 Chile during the right military coup. Jack Lemmon puts in one of his best roles of his career and Sissy Spacey as the writers wife isn't too shabby either. Its a search that seems unending and you can see the father just coming undone as every second passes growing more and more desperate for his boys body. This film really makes you feel for them and how it seems like they are 'going round in circles'. The end made me quite emotional...

I have to stop watching such heavy dramas. If it wasn't for 'newsradio' before bed, I'd be depressed every night.

I just watched this the other day too and i really loved it. I think my favorite sorts of films are from the 70s, they're American, and they're about a small questioning voice battling against or uncovering the shady dealings of those in charge. see: Missing, All the President's Men, Network. And generally in the end the small voice is crushed.

Jack Lemmon is great in this. I often forget how great he is. After watching this I rewatched his scenes in Short Cuts cause they're so fucking powerful.

What's the best part about the Missing Criterion? Commentary an such?

Of course I do. There are certainly film makers that are still making stuff that is heavily influenced by 70's cinema and would fit perfectly. One or two directors came through unscathed after 'Heaven's gate' (1980) went to box office hell.

I saw Le Trou.  Great film.
French prison escape movie from 1960.  It was extremely economical and detailed.  Covered five inmates digging a tunnel with great precision and fascination.  I really like movies that make the details sing.  It was based on a true story and they even used some real actors from the actual event.

'A Raisin in the Sun'

A beautiful film that portrays racism in its deep core, breakthrough and heartbreaking performances. You can feel the struggle and although I've seen the play, in some ways I was more affected by the film. I haven't seen the update (yet) but I've heard its melodramatic...I sometimes hate that I'm white sometimes...

'Cat People'

Its a B movie of the highest quality with character actors and people you wish you could see more of. Malcolm McDowell is at his menacing best and outrageously scary. It works in every nuance and every angle. Its rare that such a campy film can get under your skin just as much as makes you giggle here and there. It also shows some of beautiful new orleans when it was just a run down yet cultured city. I had a lot of fun watching this and it was nice to see Nastassha Kinski.

'Management'

A sweet comedy that's honest about needy love. One of Jennifer's better performances in recent years. We remember why we loved her so much in 'The Good Girl', what she can really do with her talent. Some people would find Steve Zahn's character creepy and I can understand that but I also know a couple of guys like 'Mike', who are so astounded by a woman that they can't even pretend to act normal. They're just blatantly weird about their attraction to you. Some of you might find this film forgettable but it really resonated for me.

Best Part IMO: Woody Harrelson as a ex punk rocker/enviormentialist

And yes the poster is horrendous.

'Beat the Devil'

This is a great parody/tribute to the film noir/thrillers that John Huston did in the 30's and 40's. They are all playing this straight which makes the dark comedy ingrained in the story all the more pleasureable. The plot summary according to IMDB which is a correct summary is as follows:

A quartet of international crooks -- Peterson, O'Hara, Ross and Ravello -- is stranded in Italy while their steamer is being repaired. With them are the Dannreuthers. The six are headed for Africa, presumably to sell vacuum cleaners but actually to buy land supposedly loaded with uranium. They are joined by others who apparently have similar designs.
Now, just by reading that you might think you won't laugh out loud but there are moments of blatant over-acting that rival the simplistic strong story penned by Truman Capote. Its not something I'm going to run out and purchase but if I see it for real cheap at a store sometime, I'll pick it up.

Recommended.

'The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things'

Really well made and something that deliberately gets under your skin. This film could be a more demented cynical look at what could have happened if a young Courtney Love was still out of control fter Kurt's death and dealing with having a kid. Its un-nerving and possibly trying to be shocking just for shock's sake. Portions were really hard to take and as every moment passed and I wanted it to be over. Its really too well made to not feel like you should feel-detached from this film.

Thanks for reminding me that I really want to see that.  Scarlet Diva (her film before this) was fucked up in the best way.  It seems like nobody's really making movies like Asia Argento is, and that's always a plus for me even if the result is, shall we say, not for everyone.

Easy Money

Nothing shining or really outstanding about this film but the performances which are top notch, although its really strange to see Kelsey Grammer with a fake nose. But man, the actors really knock it out of the park for such bad dialogue. I really enjoyed myself though.

'Stardust'

My film tastes are getting more aquired and while I liked it, the overall film fell flat to me and boring. It did not have any of the zip or charm that the 'princess bride' had, maybe I was shooting my sightes too high for that. It felt awkward that De Niro and Michelle were in this piece. I've also never been a big fan of fantasy. The only reason why I watched this is because it was on HBO tonight and I was half asleep. I'm fully awake now.

'The Killing Room'
A disturbing play on morality and what people will do to survive. It really could be done on stage because of its lack of set design and its minimalistic idea. Lovely performances all around but the premise is highly unlikely. (Of course it is.) It gets under your skin and into your head. Gives you questions about what you and your friends would do in the situation.

An engrossing film filled with magnificient performances and powerful visions. It was very educational and I didn't miss a moment. you know, i've always wanted to see that. i'm putting a note on my phone to get it this weekend cos i think i'll really like it.

everytime i'm at the video store i always forget to look for it.. i think my forgetfulness is representative of the general experience with a whole bunch of probably very good but forgotten films that feel the same way. for example another is The French Lieutenant's Wife. ALWAYS forget it but ALWAYS have wanted to see it., i may be wrong and these are two of the biggest turds i'll ever watch but i don't think so. there's so many amazing movies that aren't even that obscure and that were kinda big for a short while or at least widely critically acclaimed and that now even the critics have forgotten about.

i think that's what groups these films together, they are all films that were only loved by critics and have now been forgotten by them. so all that remains is a vague impression that it was a movie everyone always meant to someday watch, and just never got around to it.

hahaha on the poster under the names i thought it said "it's a warren beatty film"

I didn't realize this thread existed. This is more or less a 'what you watched that doesn't fit into other categories' thread.

When Hollywood Video closed down I picked up Sleepaway Camp. I figured it was just going to be one of the 80's slasher films, just a fun dumb watch.

I had no idea about the ending........now that was crazy.

Anyone seen this film?

lol@ it's a warren beaty film

about Sleepaway camp: haha here's a thought: renting this movie is one of the must pathetic act I can imagine. BUT buying it is alright. Strange. Anyway, I have a story about this film. Weirdly, in the course of my adventurous life, I have met people my age who talked about "some horror film they saw on TV as kids" that really creeped them out, it was in a summer camp etc...

BUT HERE'S THE TWIST: We were talking about the film and there was definitely an elephant in the room. Everybody seemed to want to talk about something but weren't sure. What was going on is that ALL of us (I'm talking 4 people here!) thought that we IMAGINED that ending. We lived our lives thinking, with deep repressed shame, that our minds had made up the twist of Sleepaway Camp. That it never happened, that we were just sick people.

How can that be?! All of our kid-brains refused the reality of that twist. It was stored in the same space we store old dreams. Maybe they tried to save our innocent minds....

i think movies were 6 for $10 at that time. it looked kinda interesting and like someone had purposefully hidden it in a weird section, which intrigued me more.

i'm wondering what i'm actually looking at at that last full body shot - the head doesn't look right - i don't know if it's a person wearing a made up mask - i'm guessing they wouldn't expose the underage girl to a nude male? i have no idea - the weird disjointiness of the way the person looks (and acts) makes it even weirder and creepier.

the title really makes no sense at all. have you seen any of the sequels? the commentary has the original writer/director talking about his first direct sequel and it looks like it's come out since then.

there's like four of these movies. two sequels and a remake. The first three came in a box set that i bought my sister for her birthday a couple years ago. She's older so she used to subject me to these flicks when i was ten or so. Good job sis.

New York Stories

Another rental store pickup. Can't believe Coppola attached his name to Life Without Zoe. I really want to believe that a very young Sofia was responsible for everything and he only attached his name to get it released. Also very criminal that these 3 shorts are only available in Full Screen format. Full Screen Scorsese is always a crime. I wonder if there are interviews from any of the 3 (now 4 with Sofia) in regards to Life Without Zoe from around the time it was released or an interviewer asking in retrospect.

A remarkable heartbreaking performance by Meryl in a lets face it-a slightly heavy handed film that is pulled from the depths with help from Kevin Kline and Peter Macnicol. Not much else to say.

'The Bad and The Beautiful'

Lana Turners best performance in a film about how disgusting hollywood can turn you. How it can make your negative traits shine and sparkle in a town where the sun is shining behind dreary clouds. Kirk Douglas makes you hate and love him all a the same time. Hes seductive and ultimately that's how he sucks you in. I've met plenty of men like kirk douglass's character. In fact I've met so many like him, I've stopped counting. Definitely a movie to pick up.

Gizmodo/Boy Genius report that Blockbuster is temporarily avoiding bankruptcy, but is now out of the NYSE:

Things stateside haven't gone the way of Blockbuster Portugal (yet) but while the Blockbuster was able to make arrangements with creditors and avoid bankruptcy this week, it will be forced to delist from the New York Stock Exchange after a proposed reverse stock split fell through. Even the extension on debt payments it was able to negotiate hasn't satisfied analysts, with our old friend Michael Pachter telling Reuters "there's nothing on the horizon that makes it look like Blockbuster is going to be more profitable." Ouch. A substantial amount of debt has long been a problem for Blockbuster as it tries to adjust to a changing marketplace with Redbox and Netflix, and with shares trading at .18, has now made its existence more precarious than ever.

Madeinusa

wri/dir - Claudia Llosa

A friend of mine who's opinion I really respect recently told me Claudia Llosa was one of the filmmakers she was was keeping an eye on and having never heard of her I decided to give her debut a try and I was glad I did. It's a twist on the stranger rolls into the small town and shakes things up theme. This time it's a stranger from Lima, Peru who finds himself stuck in small inbred indigenous town after a road is flooded out. The stranger has arrived right at the beginning of Holy Time for this village. The time from Good Friday to Easter Sunday where they believe God is dead and therefore nothing is a sin. The story follows the eponymous Madeinusa who's a young girl dubbed the towns virgin during Holy Time as she becomes fascinated with the misplaced stranger and begins questioning her own life within the village as well as the sexual advances of her own father who is also the town mayor.

Has anyone else seen this? It's a very strong debut and highly recommended. I'm looking for her followup, The Milk of Sorrow, but it doesn't seem to be available on DVD. Has anyone seen it?

'Assassination of a High School President' is 'Brick' without the static movements and "Film Noir" dialogue that was so present in 'Brick'. Actually, there is a little bit of that type of dialogue and the same character archytypes but its much more fluid and it has less of a stricter view of what a film noir can do in that particular genre. That benefits the film and made it more enjoyable in some areas than 'Brick'. If you want to check it out, do so.

'Megamind'

I know I might get some shit for this but I fell completely in love with this movie. Its a nice screwaround towards what the superhero movie could be. I could even see a live action version of this, done with the exact same actors and I think they could pull it off. Although I'm not sure how they would do david cross's character. Well, maybe a gigantic amount of CGI could fix some of those problems if they made it live action. Anyway, loved it to death.

'Casino Jack'

Kevin brings in another intense and riveting performance as Jack Abramoff. It breaks down how he took excess to the limit and screwed the USA in the process while still getting the audience to sympathize with him, if only a tiny bit. Kinda sad this is the last film of George's Career but the film is completely worth it. Jon Lovitz is sublimely disgusting. Check it out.

Jesus, what a devastating and compelling story. I don't want to give away too much but its one of the best documentary's about sacrafice and military lies set in the iraq backdrop. Much more intriguing than any fictional film about the Iraq or Afighanistan, My jaw was on the floor not beacuse of surprise but because of how well it was put together.

JD's Revenge

*Spoliers*
A very serious Blaxploitation film thats undeniably 70's. It couldn't have been made in any other decade. The basic plot is that a mild mannered law school student/cabdriver gets possessed by a 1940's pimp/gangster who's out for revenge again the man who killed him and his family. Its pure odd, cool, ridiculousness. Glynn Turman's ('Cooley High'; Mayor Clarence Royce in "The Wire")dive into the demented feels all too real and natural. Playing two characters simultaneously with ease you can see the prowess, his passion, his intensity. Coming out the same year as 'Taxi Driver', you can't help but compare the two performances. It almost rivals De Niro's transformation in Scorsese's Classic but the more I think about it the more I think about Glynn was trying to emulate some similarities to what Bob did with Travis.

Anyway, its seriously disturbing and more than a couple notches than most of the blaxploitation films of the 70's. Check it out if that floats your boat. Its streaming on netflix now.

It looks like a lot of fun. I love these types of documentaryish monster movies. I really liked Cloverfield minus the stupid characters and this looks to be in the same style.

There's a copy floating around online, but it doesn't have hard coded subs and since I stream to my 360 and PS3, I need to have them. Hate watching movies on my little 17in computer monitor.

How To Kill Your Neighbor's Dog

A curmudgeon of a writer tries to find inspiration in 'horrible' LA...
I know-great log line but I found myself more and more intrigued and sympathetic with the protagonist who is kind of a ugly person.
I really enjoyed better than I thought it would be and more people should really see it.

'Sid and Nancy

A wonderful portrait of one of the most volitile love couples that ever collided with one another. It also shows a clique of people who's 'fuck it all' attitude ruled the world for a short amount of time. Now, every once in a long while someone meets their soul mate-someone they were meant to be with.... This is one such couple.

Does anyone else go through this and the I just bought thread to try and find the next thing to add to your Netflix queue when you send a movie back?

'30 days of night'

This is a brutal and disgusting B horror film about vampires that is worth checking out. Josh Hartnett goes with the flow like Nic cage is doing now and really has fun in this ridiculous and utterly riveiting-so wrong its right-movie. Surprising and wild this gives an interesting spin on the vampire movie. Only one scare though....

Has anyone seen The Census Taker?
This TV played it and it sounded interesting so I recorded it. Like films such as Troll 2 and The Room this has midnight movie cult hit written all over it. A lot of scenes are of the quality of the aforementioned, but they are some good bits and it even has a weird, unique soundtrack by The Residents. Despite it's low points, it was fun to watch and I do feel it actually is a good story idea.

'Do You remember Dolly Bell'

This is a sweet heartbreaking film about falling in love with a hooker. Its one the best hooker movies ever produced. It really touched me in a deep way.

'Rush'

Possibly one of the best depictions of drug addiction ad drug culture that I've ever seen and from what I've heard it was also one of the first ones that really impressed the critics. let me tell you. The critics don't lie. Excellent piece of celloid and they don't make it fun to watch at all.

Stephen Kings Desperation
A above average adaptation of one of my favorite stephen king novels. I had a real ball and the cast did an amazing job of portraying the characters as they were supposed to be portrayed. Ron Pearlman is righteous as the embodiment of Tak.

'The Hospital'

This is possibly one of the darkest satires/dramas I've seen from the 1970's. Creative, interesting, and really surprising. It danced with my emotions. Make me inspired to want to write films again. So many things are happening in this film that sometimes its tough to keep up with everything. Our grizzled hero (George C Scott) is distraught and feeling ugly in this bold drama. See it. Do it. Make it happen.

I recently realized that the library is way cooler than netflix and Hulu, and the best part is that i'm already paying for the library.  So, i've been able to see tons of awesome flicks that i'd never seen and in some cases never heard of.  I posted some of these in another thread but this seems more appropriate to list here.  There will most likely be spoils.  There will also probably dumb things said, because i don't properly know how to discuss film.

Persona - Having read nothing about this film, I'm not entirely sure what it is about.  I took it at face value from the get-go, but by the end I was wondering if they were the same person, or who was analyzing who.  It seems like this film is much deeper than I understand, but the editing in the beginning is just wild.  It's almost like telling you, "you're watching a constructed film," then we see an erect penis, yada yada yada. After this crazy avant garde editing sequence, we cut to someone being crucified.  Wow.  There's just such a modern take on film, I can't even begin to discuss. We're constantly reminded of a constructed narrative and then seeing the film crew at the end. JEEEZ. Neato.  I watched this with my girlfriend and she actually squirmed and gasped as Elisabeth walked back and forth by the broken glass. So, it just works on so many different levels.  It's the only Bergman film i've seen thus far.

Blowup and Blow-out - I watched Blow-out first, knowing nothing about the film Blowup.  I thought it was a great film about making movies and a great thriller.  When watching Baumbach interview De Palma on some of the special features, I noticed that he wasn't quick to identify his film with Blowup and after watching Blowup I found out why.  Blow-out, though it's an awesome film, is far more shallow than Blowup.  Blow-out is great, but it's pretty much a what you see is what you get type of movie.  I mean this in the sense that, Blowup leaves a lot up to the viewer and Blow-out takes more of a Hitchcokian turn with restricted and unrestricted knowledge.   Although Blowup is the only Antonioni film i've seen, I love the deep ideas that it toys with.  The first idea I love in the film, is the idea that, in order to gain knowledge and perspective on something, one must be more than just a voyeur.  One must participate in it, and when he or she begins to do that they can comment on it or try and figure it out with more accuracy. I don't think I believe in that idea necessarily, but it works well within the film.  I've not read the short story for Blowup, but I've been told it can explain some of the film.  Originally I thought the film was saying, "the closer you look at something the less you know about it, sort of like Tony Shalhoub's uncertainty dialogue in, "the man who wasn't there."  but, i'm not so sure if that's what the film is trying to convey.

Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia - Well, what an awesome premise and a brilliant way to treat your characters.  I just loved Bennie in this film.  I read somewhere that he Warren Oates was doing his best Peckinpah impersonation which makes the myth of Peckinpah ring truer and truer.  I just loved the entire layout and pacing of this film.  Nearly two hours long and it works down to each minute. So much is accomplished in this film it just blows my mind.  It's a pure action romp but that doesn't take away from the film whatsoever.

Night of the hunter - Easily one of the most terrifying stories ever put to screen and harshly believable.  Another tale where you get minimal details but there's nothing else you need to know to get wrapped up in it.  Charles Laughton directs one of the most fatastic films i've ever seen.  The sets are so elaborate and so realistic and a Good vs. Evil story line has never been so good.  Also the device of using "Love" and "Hate" tattooed on the knuckles was used brilliantly.  I truly wish I had more to say about it.  But there's just something really creepy about a serial killer who is a zealot as well.  It's what i secretly think most religious zealots are up to.

Others include:

The Blob
Sullivan's Travels
Out of the Past
The Lickerish Quartet
Jazz on a Summer's Day

Croupier
Something that Clive Owen fans will adore, this drama/mystery will astound you and make you want to watch it again for clues and hints that lead to the ending that has such a left turn that anyone will be surprised.  A smart delight of a celloid classic that will be known as a unappreciated gem as time goes by.

Wristcutters
A love story for overtramatized suicide teens and 20 somethings that is clever but slightly indulgent. I think I liked the premise and overall idea more than the film itself. Its the performances that sparkle in this depression of a film.

Brubaker
Really epic prison movie that came out in 1980, a film thats really a 1970's film. An under-rated performance by redford and his last performance before he went on a extended hiatus that was lifted with 1984's The Natural.

'The Perfect Host'
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1334553/
A Solid film with a hellava couple twists you won't see. Think this would be a better play than a movie. Really clever and very witty.

'Morning Glory'
A Grizzled Harrison Ford, a peppy albeit Rachel McAdams, and a Whiny Diane Keaton makes this comedy trying to be 'Broadcast News' really shine. Its worth it if you have a girlfriend who wants to see a romantic comedy that isn't too sweet or saccharine. I have to admit-I laughed out loud at some of the ridiculous screwball moments in the flick.

'Blood and Wine'
A Simple Story That You Think Might Be Boring But Definitely isn't. What could have been run of the mill gets insanely dark and strangely inventive. The Overacting and Violent action pieces make this really worthwhile to watch late at night. All of the performances are top notch and you get to see a young 'Michael' from 'Lost' and Stephen Dorff's best friend.

'Silver City'
A solid but exhausting satire about how a Bush-type guy finds a dead guy in the colorado river wile running for office. Lot of great faces but it made me feel tired.

Make way for tomorrow

I was simply amazed with how well this film from 1937 holds up today.  Simply does not miss a beat regarding generational gaps and the constant state of change that we either chose to face or ignore.  This is the only Leo Macarey film i've seen, but I absolutely have nothing bad to say about this movie at.  I suggest everyone put it at the top of your list.

It's just a devastating story laden with light-hearted humor that works perfectly together.

The Big Knife
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047880/
A intense drama that I could see be easily remade with perhaps George Clooney or Russell Crowe in the leading roll. It has the potential to be a great play as well. The ugly side of the business is shown here and while it borders on melodramatics its quite well written. Jack palace gives a riveting performance as the hollywood actor who chose success over art regretting it years later in which the story takes place. Its really worth your time.

Trespass
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1674784/
Such an awful piece of shit. A hostage film with bad Dialogue and over the top acting. Cage and Kidman must really have owed Joel Schumacher a favor of monumentous proportions. The motives and stakes are unclear throughout the film and this film could have been done and over with in 30 minutes but theres so much drawn out that you're bored throughout. Bleh. Nothing but screaming and crying for a hour and a half.

Battleship Potemkin
A fantastic and Beautifully shot film that was revoting and yet a little dry for me. Maybe because I like my silent films with slapstick or screwball comedy in them or I don't feel engaged. I overall enjoyed it though.

'Flawless'
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780516/
a cute nourish heist film that is forgive the pun, a real gem of a film. Demi Moore gives her best performance is what seems to be at least a decade. Whip smart, sweet, clever and what I might think might be the best underrated film of the 2000's. Check it out.

'Margin Call'
A scary and unique look at the financial crisis of 2008. Has a knockout cast but the real shiner here is Kevin Spacey. You get to see his real humanity in the role he is portraying and its the first time he doesn't act overtly smug. For people in business this film will hit home for them who have been laid off, especially in the economic downturn that started in the late 2000's an is just starting to let up now. I don't want to say any more cause I don't want to spoil it but damn this is good.

She's out of my league
A sweetheart film that hurt my heart. Realistic and now my favorite romantic comedy of the past 5 years. I know its a cliche hackneyed picture to most but I loved it.

Wonderful World
Spoilers
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0857275/
A film about seeing the beauty in the world around you. Making your life feel like it has life in it.I was certainly happy by the end of what started out as a downer of a movie. Omar from 'The Wire' does an exceptional job here and yet he falls into a coma just as the movie is about to start. Philip Baker Hall makes a appearance as Matthew Broderick's conscience. Won't say anymore cause I think I gave away too much already but a real interesting film that ranks up there with Matthew Broderick's best stuff.

Shotgun Stories

A Savage, gorgeous film about Broken families, down home boys and vicious anger under the surface. Such brilliance gives me chills and I can not wait to see Take shelter. Its quiet moments have distraught dignity. Part of me really wants to move to arkansas after this cause strangely it reminded me yet again how much I love southern girls.
