Title: The Old Souls Revival
Post by: Neil on March 07, 2013, 01:32:16 AM
Here are two out of four songs that i've recently released on an EP entitled, "Before the Gold Rush.

hope you enjoy, and I look forward to all your criticisms and other words regarding the matter.

Again, thanks for taking the time out of your day to listen to these songs and give feedback.

Below will be four links to which you can d/l each track.

Hey, my band is about to put out a full length record. I'm really psyched about the new members of the band, and how well we're playing live.
If you're on facebook, go check out our page. We'll have much more updates there, and you can hear the new stuff as soon as we put it up.

I'm finally getting the masters for this thing, one track at a time, so I thought i'd post a few tunes here.

Enjoy.

I'm liking the way these are coming out. "First Hymn" is a really good song.

Very nice, the production value is really high.

I think your vocalist would sound much better with more processing though (perhaps to make him sound more distant/reverbish) or he needs to dial back the growling a bit. His close-to-the-mic raw vocal kind of clashes with the rest of your sound.

Ha. don't worry about it, I do play guitar as well, but I'm not the lead player.  As I've said, I'm very proud of these songs and this band.  I genuinely respect JB's opinion, and the fact that he's nice enough to take the time and not only listen, but provide his opinion. Furthermore I know he's always honest and his intentions are meant to be constructive, or at least he's been that way with me, so I don't take it personally.
I appreciate all of your creative palettes, or at least those of you whose ideas are out there, on this site or otherwise, so don't worry about it.  I'm definitely not a great singer.  Here's the master to a song I received today, with less growl coincidentally.

Thanks for taking that the right way. I love a lot of things in your voice, and I think it could be amazing if it were given a tasteful effect and blended a bit. (Don't ask me how to do that.) The rawness is sometimes a little startling in the mix, that's all.

I'm with Polka... I became strangely attached to "First Hymn." I've listened to it 3 or 4 times.

This is a revised version of a song that i've posted before.  A few of you had some relevant criticisms towards it, which caused me to launch into a sarcastic rant attempting to justify it, which was silly and I probably had polka delete.  I think it speaks for itself and I'm proud of the tune itself, so I hope you enjoy it and I hope 2014 is going well so far for all of you.

Hey guys, I wasn't sure where to put this, and I don't think i should litter any more on this site than I already have. However, shortly after I moved to St. Louis, my band began to play out a lot, which put me in the same room with a lot of talented St. Louis musicians who aren't really doing much.  STL isn't currently known for its musical output, but anyways, we have a lot of talent here, and I started this project, which admittedly was me biting off more than I could chew, but i lit a fire and things are happening.

I am producing, directing and editing this thing and I've never made a doc before. It's been a learning experience and i'd love some feed back on potential things y'all think might help take this project to the next level, or just any insight at all would be very appreciated.

We won't be crowd sourcing. We're treating this group of 30 + musicians as one big band, so we're going to go out and play paying gigs and bank the money to get it made.  Hope you enjoy the trailer.

and here's our first musical performance that we've released which will be on the 1st disc, but only with full backing instrumentation.
The idea is to utilize the arsenal of musicians we have that are willing to collaborate with one another.

If you'd like to follow the progression of the documentary/album's that we're making we're on facebook, please go like it. This is a completely non profit endeavor, and we all just want to create.

Here's this week's video for the project.  This song will appear on the 1st disc of the compilation however it will have full instrumentation backing it, or whatever we deem necessary for the tune.  We wanted to show the early form of each song, to show the process of this whole thing for the documentary.

Enjoy.

Hey y'all, hope all's well.  I just thought i'd inquire for anyone kind enough to respond.

this documentary is underway and essentially it's about the music scene here in St. Louis, but more specifically the project is about building a community and putting all these artists who are always around one another in a position to make music together.

So, with this being said, what aspects would you find interesting about a project like this?  What would you want to see on film. I understand that a lot of you are creative types, so i'd love to hear what some of you would have to say.  Sometimes it's difficult to collaborate with one or more people who you haven't worked with a lot, especially when it comes to songwriting and having a preconception of what the song should sounds like once it's finished. So, i think there will be some of that going on, just showing people collaborating, and clashing as well as clicking together etc. But, what else do you think would be interesting or beneficial for the doc?

Anyways, If you have any questions that i can answer to help wrap your head around the documentary or project, please ask them because i'd love to hear feedback from any of you lovely individuals. We're all super busy, so I really appreciate those of you taking to the time to at least read this.

I think the act of collaboration between musicians is a fascinating thing to watch on film. Developing a song in pieces and watching it take shape. It really gives the viewer an emotional investment in the eventual performance. Treat the act of songwriting as a story with an arc, with the finished song as the climax.

JB, over the last few years I've sort of learned how to sing! Less growling, and a little more smoothness.

First, I'd like to say thanks to all of you who took the time to watch the vid and listen to my two-minute tune.

Also, thank you for your positive feedback.

This may sound inappropriate, but when I get compliments from other artists or from folks who are able to discuss art as well as most of y'all, especially those that I've gained great respect for over the last 13 years, it means much more to me than the average compliment.

I realize this sounds smug and sort of elitist, but I don't mean it that way, I simply mean that artists and those consumed by the arts seem to understand certain aspects about the process and so on. I appreciate all compliments, but I do place them on a spectrum of sorts.

Lastly, I have to give props to James Jackson (https://vimeo.com/jajacks114) for his editing Genius. He basically turned chicken shit into chicken salad. We had shot a tiny desk concert with him using a green screen
and since we had the green screen set up I thought (after several drinks and joints) "let's just shoot a bunch of random shit in CU using the green screen, while it's set up. Shortly after, we went through the footage together and I began to think, "oh no, we're not going to be able to anything with this hodgepodge," but I was wrong.  ( Wish we'd gotten a better mix of our youtube tiny desk, but we were on a time crunch)

Thanks a lot, Y'all, much love.

it invites me into the perspectives of people new to me, and it is warm and genuinely touching. and genuinely touching, warm material isn't so easy to compose, i don't believe, on account of it always being so dangerously near saccharine, mawkish, etc. therefore i think you did a fine job of keeping the doc in the right place. i swear it could be a tourist video commissioned by the city. the city council could've voted on it. "make a sweet-sweet video about the real people with real hearts who live and sing here," said the mayor of the city, why not. it makes me want to live there. i don't live there though and so what i have is the album, and it makes me want to listen to the album, and now that i've watched the doc i like the album even more.

in summary i think you did a great job. thanks for sharing it xx

I'm digging it. St. Louis, St. Louis sounded completely different to OSR, but then there's your familiar throaty vocals on Jump Ship. Crop Circles made me LOL. I think it's between that, Dance Studio, and Middle of the Road for my personal favorite. It's all great though.
