I have two friends who are huge Modest Mouse fans, so I've listened to their music a lot over the past two years or so.  They're a terrific band.  It is weird to hear their song in that van commercial.  You know which one I'm talking about?

Yeah, Gravity Rides Everything is in some minivan commercial about moms and it was also in a beer ad about a year ago that I never heard.

I know it's a mainstream pick, but Trailer Trash is one excellent payoff.  I hope they get a great new drummer and keep going strong.

saw them in concert over the summer... during interstate 8, an overzealous fan got on stage began jumping around, knocking into the band members; the bassist tried to push him off stage but the kid turned around and started shoving him, at which point Isaac (the lead singer) stopped singing, threw down his guitar, decked the kid, and threw him into the security guards.  security dragged the kid off, then brock picked up his guitar, said something like "don't fucking hit my friend or I'll kick your ass", then the band finished the song from the exact measure they had stopped on. it was funny.

best song (s): all nite diner, a different city, third planet, trailer trash, tiny cities made of ashes, teeth like god's shoeshine, and cowboy dan.

getting ready to watch them on the set of one of Carson Daly's 600 jobs, wondering what album I should buy, having only The Moon and Antarctica (a cd that seemingly will hang closely to my cd player forever), to bridge the gap to their new release. I have heard some of their older stuff sparingly, I love Edit the Sad Parts. What must I have by them? i want only credible opinions.

also, i believe that dude from Blues' Clues is gonna be playing the Burger King on 4th St. later tomorrow afternoon while Carson flips burgers, you might wanna check it out

Get The Lonesome Crowded West and then get all of the rest

EDIT:  Sad Sappy Sucker is probably hard for a lot of people to like because half of it is just Isaac fucking around with dial-a-song or whatever it's called.  A playful album, but I love it too

I don't feel any of them are their masterpiece, but Moon is the easiest to get into, and a very solid album.  Building Nothing Out Of Something is sort of like Moon, but a lot harder to get into.

Good News for People Who Love Bad News.....skeptical first listen, followed by a blissful second listen

a very high-gloss album with a few gems...Blame it on the Tetons, amazing and nothing like any other Modest Mouse song, the World at Large, the same goes for that minus familiar riff - after quick lesson on Bukowski, the song makes a lot of sense, great reference, better song...the jumpiness of some of the tracks really works.....mellotrons, banjos, fiddles, Flaming Lips contributions, all majestic and beautiful

had the bad feeling at first that this was the type of record that i would really appreciate, but not really love, but that feeling has went away

listened to Modest Mouse all night and in between finally watched 21 Grams, my outlook on life is all at once bleak, bitter, and inspired at the same time....i think i'll have a cola

I was kind of disappointed by the video. It seemed like it was going to be a Tim Hope video but it ended up being a wannabe Tim Hope video with too much camera movement. More interesting than your average video, though, and I love that song. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!

it will get better, but you're right, can't touch Lonesome Crowded West, or Moon and Antarctica.....but we'd be crazy to think it could

an album where resignation is as close to happiness that Isaac gets....the tone of the album is more relaxed and upbeat, but almost just as bitter

a short tragedy by me, driving to the mall listening to Good News... and thinking "man, this is the type of album that'll probably get some play in American Eagle (the corporate clothing store that makes every 15 to 25 year old a rock star)"...the "man" at the beginning of my thought indicating my scorn for that chance...well what do i do but walk in and try to find the most non-descript shirt or whatever on clearance when i notice a jumpy little number that's very familiar, The View from Good News... i walk out in disgust, feeling more and more like that hack that i am

I too am no authority on Modest Mouse, but I'm really enjoying this album. The one problem I had on the first listen is that I found 'Float On' to be so good that the next song was just a let down. I read a review that described it as the 'Hey Ya' of indie rock, and while that doesn't really mean anything, I know what they mean -- you know? I love it.

I'm digging the rest of the album, though...especially the tracks (don't remember the names at the moment) that are so Tom Waits-ish.

unfortunately, you're going to have to share it... you know why?  Because I like this band.  This happens with a LOT of the bands I like.  The more I like them, the more popular they get.

Though Float-on (as uncool as it is to say) is an amazing song.

It's very uneven and has lots of filler and several flat-out bad tracks.  Of 14 real songs, I'd say perhaps 7 stand up to previous MM work.  Float On is just decent, they've written that song about 78 times, usually better than on GNFPWLBN.

Even if it grows on me a ton, this will only ever be the 3rd best Modest Mouse album.

Its good but like everyone has said its more for the general public, its manufactured. Building nothing out of something is my personal favorite but the other night some kid was trying to tell me that after lonesome crowded west they suck which is a total farce because moons is one of the greatest disc of all time~
Title: Re: Modest Mouse
Post by: moonshiner on April 26, 2004, 10:21:08 AM
the album is very sugary, uneven is also a good criticism...they've splashed in some of their trademark angular, spacy guitar riffs, and the lyrics are less puzzling, more straightforward....i like it for its poppy, summery sound in parts, and the resignation in the album is projected well, just too obvious

of course, at the end of the day we're all wishing the album was better, bottom line

I too have been listening to them since Lonesome Crowded West.  It is a blessing a man this talented with such an ego and wonderful rock star tendencies to finally make the money he deserves.  Sharing with the MTV crowd?  I'm sure he's sick of sharing a run down van doubling as his hotel room every night with his other band members.  Every talented musical artist should get what's due to them and it's Brock's turn this year.  At 25 I'm too old to want to keep my favorite bands my little secrets.  Wouldn't the world be a better place if all the kids were listening to bands like Modest Mouse and not Godsmack?  Apparently not, because record snobs will have nothing to feel special about.

Good job, Modest Mouse.  I'm glad the quality music you've been making for the past many years has finally allowed you to live comfortably and you are being rewarded for it.

Modest Mouse - This Is A Long Way To Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About
Quote from: IHey, me too.  :yabbse-thumbup:
Quote from: WalrusIt's my favorite album of theirs, how about you?
So glad you asked.

Long Way is one of the harder ones to get into, IMO.  Not that I don't like it, but it seems as if the album is so continuous that it's hard to distinguish the songs at first.  My favorite is The Moon and Antarctica Lonesome Crowded West.  I can play it them over, and over, and over again, straight through, no problem.  Just got Building Nothing Out Of Something the other day along with the rest of their other albums I didn't have.  Building just blew me away.  Other People's Lives is amazing.  Reminded me of Trailer Trash -- almost the same notes used in the instrumental.  I really love a lot of tracks on their new album (besides the obvious three, I like Bury Me With It, Bukowski, The View [prolly my favorite ever -- the bridge (2:45-3:20) is perfect bliss, apt considering the song], Blame It On The Tetons, and Black Cadillacs) even though a lot of people seem to not like the direction they took.  Even Interlude (Milo) has something unique to offer, and reminds me of stuff I heard on Sad Sappy Sucker.

I could write pages on how great I think these guys are, but I'll spare you unless anyone wants to talk about it.  All I'll say is I was first introduced to Modest Mouse by a friend, about the same time this thread was started.  She told me to check out 3rd Planet, Trailer Trash, and Polar Opposites.  I owe her something for it.  3rd Planet was the first song that really stuck, and of course, I loved Float On immediately as did everyone else, it seems.  My brother told me that recently The OC has features some of Modest Mouse's music, and they guest starred, performed in a bar.  I don't know if it's a high or a low.  They played The View during the episode, but it was marred by drunken dialogue and then cut short.  The good?  The World At Large (most of it) played over the last minutes of the episode.  And it actually kinda fit, or so my bro says.

So I think I've heard all their stuff now.  8 9 Albums.  Unless I'm missing something.  I was missing something if you count their concert bootleg Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again.  Not really counting any collaborations.  It just sucks that at their pattern for producing albums, it'll be either late 2005 or early 2007 before they finish a new album.  And hopefully it'll be longer than their current release.  Truckers Atlas and The Stars Are Projectors are two of my favorites not just because of how ambitious they are, but how they really actually work as epics.  Atlas is a bit too long (but still it fits for the subject), but The Stars Are Projectors is perfect.
Title: Re: Modest Mouse
Post by: ono on June 14, 2005, 10:46:24 PM
There's nothing like seeing a band you love live.  And after what's probably been the worst two months of my life, tonight was like being reborn.  Isaac Brock has gotta be the second coming.  I wish they would've played more older stuff (would've loved to hear Teeth Like God's Shoeshine live -- I probably would've died on the spot -- also, they started to kick in with the drums from Truckers Atlas before hitting up another song.  Horrible, horrible tease.  That, or The Stars Are Projectors would've been very welcome), but what they chose was to be expected, so I was happy.

Bury Me With It
Great opening, one of my favorite MM songs.  Don't know if it tops the recorded version, because there's so many subtleties that kinda get mucked up live, but still a great way to start.

Ocean Breathes Salty
The live version of this, anywhere, destroys the recorded version.  It's a song that needs the energy and urgency of a live performance, and the CD doesn't have that.  See the SNL performance for an example.  But this one killed.

The View
One of MM's best songs, but it was a bit lackluster and off-key here.  The bridge was still as beautiful as always.  Apt for me.  "If life's not beautiful without the pain then I'd rather never ever even see beauty again."

Never Ending Math Equation
So happy they played this one.  It's an MM staple, and was listening to it in the car on the way there hoping they'd hit it.  They knocked it out of the park, and the place practically exploded when they hit the ending.

The Good Times Are Killing Me
Nice leisurely chill song to relax everyone.  Funny seeing all the pot smoke drift up as they're playing, and the crowd cheer on the LSD line.

Here It Comes
A wildcard, a happy surprise.  Would've liked to see more potpourri songs like this.  You can tell who the true fans are by looking around and seeing who's singing to songs like this.

Float On
Fan favorite, of course the place went crazy when this drums kicked in.  Not much to say.

Satin In A Coffin
Some songs really benefit from a live performance.  This is one of them.  It's lackluster on the CD, but the anger really came out tonight.  Good to scream really loudly when you've been fucked over by someone you didn't think would let you down.

Well you disappeared so often
like you dissolved into coffee.
Are you here right now
or are there probably fossils under your meat?

Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
GOD I SURE HOPE YOU ARE DEAD!!!

Therapeutic and chilling, too.

Bukowski
Another song that benefits from the energy of a live performance.  Banjo really kills here.  It's one of those songs that first stands out on the album then fades under the weight of mammoths like Bury Me With It and The View, but tonight resurrected my appreciation of it.

The World At Large
It was amusing seeing Isaac sit down at the keyboard and smoke a cigarette while playing this.  Not a favorite of mine, but a general crowd pleaser.  Nice and soothing.

Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes
It took me forever to catch on to what this song was when they first started playing it.  It sounds so different live.  The hook was totally unrecognizable, and it took like a minute for them to get to the lyrics.  The place went pretty crazy, though, under the spell of the power of the chorus.

Black Cadillacs
Another great angry song, made better live.  Some Modest Mouse songs, if they hit you just right, can evoke such intense feelings, kinda like the stuff of Radiohead, too.

Ocean Breathes Salty and Float On do this, too.  They give hope in the midst of sadness.  Satin In A Coffin and this song help purge anger.

I didn't die and I ain't complainin'.
I ain't blamin' you.
I didn't know that the words you said to me
meant more to me than they ever could you?
I didn't lie and I ain't sayin'
I told the whole truth.
I didn't know that this game we were playin'
even had a set of rules.

Cowboy Dan
If they couldn't find it in themselves to play Trailer Trash or Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, at least they played this gem.  I didn't take to it when I first heard it, but it's gotten better and better over the years.  A great audience helps, and there's nothing like hearing an auditorium full of people shout:

Standing in the tall grass
Thinking nothing
You know we need oxygen to breathe
Oxygen to breathe
Every time you think you're walking you're just moving the ground
Every time you think you're talking you're just moving your mouth
Every time you think you're looking you're just looking down

...segues into:

This Devil's Workday
I was very impressed with how seamlessly they moved between songs here without skipping a beat.  That said, another song I'm not wild about, but I enjoyed it here.

They said thank you and goodnight, people cheered the requisite 5-10 minutes before they came back out and gave their...

Encore:

Dramamine / Life Like Weeds
Crowd went nuts when Isaac came back on stage, and even crazier when they hit the hook to this gem.  Nothing really to say.  A really great song to zone out and get high to, which was easy enough for everyone there anyway.  I don't know how they did it, but at the end they broke into a couple lines of Life Like Weeds' chorus.  Wished they would've played the whole thing.  This is another song that if the mood catches you right, if you're really sad, you can find yourself misty.

All this talking all the time of the year
Fills up until there's nothing left to breathe
And you think you feel most everything
And you know that our hearts are just made out of strings
To be pulled
Strings to be pulled
So you think you've figured out everything
But we know that our hearts are just made out of strings
To be pulled
Strings to be pulled
All this talking all the time, and the air
Fills up until there's nothing left to breathe
Up until there's nothing left to speak
Up into the better parts of space

Broke
Not a huge fan of this one, though most MM fans seem to like it.  Fits, I guess, for the broken glassed, broken hearted, sad sappy suckers that make up their contingency.  I can relate, after reviewing the lyrics.

Breakthrough
The smile on my face as this song exploded through the speakers was the real breakthrough.  The night was over too fast, but it was the perfect hopeful ending note.

Let it breakthrough, oh let breakthrough [x4]
Open the curtain and let in some sky
It's almost half past two AM, you can tell by the light
Open your window, and let in the atmosphere!

Fuck films, I'm gonna become a groupie and see these guys over and over and over again.

So I'm pretty much a virgin to these guys. The only song I've heard is "Float On." I think I'm gonna start with Lonesome Crowded West, then ease into Moon and Antarctica. Can't wait.

Isaac: "I backed my car into a cop car the other day."

hey, i kinda agree with you two.  i had a friend in philadelphia who listened to them before they blew up and i did not care for it at all.  she always used to play it in the video store she worked in and i was like 'what the hell is this?'  'modest mouse.'  and then their song blew up and i was like 'eh, its okay' and then it stayed blowed up for a few months until the $7.99 price tag and promise of some NEW music was too much for me to resist early last summer.  and then i thought it was like 1/3 really good (the world at large, float on, ocean breathes salty, one chance), 1/3 okay (the view, satin in a coffin, blame it on the tetons, black cadillacs, the good times are killing me), and 1/3 terrible (bury me with it, dance hall, bukowski, the devils workday).  i guess they're just not my thing.  so i dont know why i just ripped Moon and Antarctica from my cousin even though i already had that downloaded from forever ago too and didn't like it except for like 3 or 4 songs.

You can't say you don't like the hype AND base your opinion of them on the newest album because you haven't been listening to the hype if you think that's what the best stuff is.

Bukowski is the best song on Good News... so you're wrong there, but most of the album is sub-par.

i don't have a problem with their hype.  i actually appreciate the fact that a band as weird and left of center as MM got as big as they did last summer during that little boom, but i just don't dig the music.

Give Lonesome Crowded West (their best by far) or Building Nothing Out Of Something a chance before you totally write them off.  Or if you really like left-of-center, try This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About.

As for Good News, different strokes for different folks.  I find most of that album to be incredibly strong with only a few weak tracks (Dance Hall, This Devil's Workday, One Chance -- but even those are redeemable).  I hated Bury Me With It when I first heard it, but it's now one of my favorites -- it grows on you, it really does.  And The View is just classic.  It seems to me though, from your selections of what's good on Good News, you like the softer stuff, and not the harder alternative rock that Modest Mouse was first known for.  And if that's the case, you won't like too much of Lonesome, and you definitely won't like Long Drive, but then Building Nothing will be a good bet, if you care.  I especially like Other People's Lives, Never Ending Math Equation, and Interstate 8 off of that one.

Lonesome crowded west is their best effort. It's an album I listened to for a very long time. They used to be good now they just try only hard enough to be relevant. There was a time when they didn't care, but those times are long gone.

Good news is a horrid album. It's got some good tracks but overall it just feels like when they were recording it they were in the mindset of "okay, this is the one thats gonna get us on the cover of entertainment weekly" and they tried to make it as accesible as possible. After that it was all downhill for them imo. Some may argue that it was all uphill for them after that, but thats only cause they saw them on the cover of ew and then bought good news.

i've had lonesome crowded west for a couple weeks... i don't know, i just can't get into it. i've heard bits and pieces of the moon and antarctica and while it was pleasant, it didn't really do anything for me either. then again, it seems like the sort of album you need to listen to multiple times to fully appreciate. based on what ono said, i might like building nothing.
Title: Re: Modest Mouse
Post by: ono on August 04, 2005, 02:37:18 PM
Eh, I don't think Good News is horrid, but to each his own.

Yeah, definitely check out Building Nothing, Slick Shoes.  There's something to appreciate there in each track.  It flows together nicely, which is funny too, because of how the album was constructed (bits and pieces from other places, not really an official album, but not an EP, either -- more like a collection).

I used to think Moon was their best.  I still love it for so many reasons, but Lonesome surpassed it for me because each track except for Jesus Christ Was An Only Child only gets better with each listen (and Polar Opposites has just gotten worse as I've found more to appreciate in other tracks on the album).

All of Modest Mouse's stuff benefits from multiple listens.  It's very atmospheric, especially Moon.  It helps to hear them live, too, which is not easy to do, but checking out Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again would help.

Best tracks for Lonesome: Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Convenient Parking, Cowboy Dan, Trailer Trash, Truckers Atlas, Bankrupt on Selling, though it's hard to discount the others because everything on it is so solid.

Best tracks for Moon: 3rd Planet, Dark Center of the Universe, The Stars Are Projectors, Paper Thin Walls, I Came As A Rat, Lives, Life Like Weeds -- same here, I'm tempted to name so many others but the ones I've mentioned are key.

I like Modest Mouse because of their very original sound... it's easy to not like them because of that.  Like Bjork... (not to compare Modest Mouse to Bjork) her voice is very different and when musicians can't live up to the standard most listeners have created based on their favorite bands, these unique bands seem horrible and untalented.

In Modest Mouse I see amazing lyrics and great music.

Though I can agree Good News was a bit lacking, it still had some great tracks.

I'm a fan but feel they have not produced a defining release.  All their albums have had peaks and valleys.  Good News is no better or worse than anything else they've done, for the most part.  It had one catchy number but god knows how that caught on, many other catchier songs throughout the years failed when that succeeded.  It's sad to see written they they've somehow sold out or compromised or changed their sound to hit it big  but songs like Bury Me With It (I like this song) normally aren't included in albums meant for mainstream marketing.  Float On was a stroke of luck, and good for him.

I think that's a dumb thing to say.

They had one album that wasn't as good as they had been crankin out lately and all of a sudden they don't care?

And you can't really say that they were trying to make Good News a "hit"... that's ridiculous... it's just not that good... it's not like they had a major radiofriendly overhaul.

My mini-review from another board, please excuse the retardedness.

daniel's first impressions of the new modest mouse album

1. March Into The Sea - j-j-j-jammin on the 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3

2. Dashboard - catchy as fuck, not as "upbeat" as it's been made out to be, back up vocals are real kewl and i also like the strings i dont give a freak

3. Fire It Up - i dig it a lot

4. Florida - dig the back up VOX on this one too and i like the slow "even as i left florida" a good deal

5. Parting of the Sensory - i don't know what the fuc all this "something's gonna steal your carbon" is all about but the last minute and a half or so of this song is just FuRiOuS

6. Missed The Boat - this song really sets my heart to flutter, dig that delayed guitar and james mercer doin some singin. this song reminds me of the 80s

7. We've Got Everything - dig that james mercer doin some singin X20 awesome

8. Fly Trapped In A Jar - dont think much of this one right yet

9. Education - dont think much of this one either but i like it

10. Little Motel - hot godamn i do like this song, "we treat mishaps like sinking ships, and i know that i dont wanna be out to drift, well i can see it in your eyes like i taste your lips and they both tell that we're better than this" ah son that's my jam

11. Steam Engenius - lol+wtf @ this, do like the whoo-hoo, whoo-hoo, whoo-oooo00o tho

12. Spitting Venom - like this one a lot, dig that ebb and flow

13. People As Places As People - i like the words

14. Invisible - i like it fine but i dont think much of it as a closer even tho "we'll get crushed by the ocean but it will not get us wet" is a good last line

i dig the fuc out of it pretty much, my major quibles being that i think the production makes a few of the songs sound same-y and that sometimes it's so studio sounding that you don't really get a sense of a band playing. but i do like it a lot especially when dude from the shins sings in the back

The new album's sick, I'm in love, it's the best thing to come along in a long time.  That's all well, and good, and old news.

This, however, is neat new news:

QuoteExclusive: Modest Mouse Frontman Talks Cutting Self, Heath Ledger Collab
We caught up with enigmatic Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock shortly after topping the Billboard charts to find out how it feels to sell thousands of records, what he's up to next, and why the hell he cut himself.

So, um, why'd you cut yourself?
I had lost my voice in Portland, and I was drinking single malt scotch, which opens up your vocal chords. That night I was drinking coffee with single malt scotch and was having a really good time. I got hyper, got kind of punk rock on it, no crazier than Nick Cave or Iggy or anyone like that. It's not a cry for help. If people want to make it a sad sack moment, f*ck them. I see no reason to turn my fun into their drama. After the show I was in a great mood. It wasn't something I even thought about until a few days later when I got a text from a friend that said "Someone said you cut yourself -- are you ok?" and I'm like, "Oh sh*t. Here we go. I know how this one plays out." So now I gotta answer this question for the next year.

Were there any songs you plan to release that didn't make it on the record?
We're going to make an EP –- a partner record for [We Were Dead]. They're really good songs, a couple of my favorite songs didn't make it to the record, but they'll be coming out when we have a chance to get them together. Not a clue when that'll be. There's one called "Autumn Beds" that's about some of the characters that are recurring on this record, the people who worked on the fishing boat -— it's about their trial and them getting killed again. There's one called "Tie the Lake Down," and there's another called "The Whale Song," which is a lot of people in the band's favorite song.

Any other videos planned, apart from "Dashboard"?
We started working on some lower budget videos for seven or eight other songs. Heath Ledger's been wanting to do a video for one of the songs that didn't make it on the record, "King Rat." Terry Gilliam is going to help animate it. Heath and I have a mutual friend and when we were in Australia, my fiancé and some of us in the band went out on a boat with him and his family and friends and talked about the idea. He's got a video production company and was interested in working on something. We were talking back and forth for a while. The idea seemed sort of dropped, but then he just sent me an email saying that he wanted to do it. And I love me some Terry Gilliam. I hope it works out and I don't sound like a f*cking liar at the end of this.

http://vh1blog.vh1.com/2007/04/exclusive_modes.html

So yeah, an EP on the way (who knows when), and some dreams about Terry Gilliam working with MM.  Gr9.

So the EP was released about a month and a half ago.  Pretty good stuff, though I haven't had as much of a chance to listen as I'd've liked.  Really fond of Guilty Cocker Spaniels, Autumn Beds, and The Whale Song (and King Rat, which I'd already heard).  They also performed on Letterman a while back.  That one's probably on YouTube somewhere, I'm sure.  The other news is, the video that's been talked about for a long time was finally completed (released along with the EP) in Heath Ledger's memory (he directed).  Watch the King Rat video (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=61500391).

Learned this a few days ago:

Who knows what it means for what the new album will sound like.  But last time Isaac Brock collaborated, he came up with something as amazing as WWD, breathed new life into Tiny Cities Made of Ashes' live performance thanks to Johnny Marr's rockin' guitar, and suddenly started playing anything and everything from their old catalog, making them worth seeing again even if they have blown up too big for their concerts to be enjoyable anymore.  I mean, they've played stuff from Sad Sappy Sucker on tour now!

http://www.interstate-8.com/tourdates_song.php?songid=70

This harkens back to a bootleg of Diggin' Holes in the Water (Ugly Casanova) I have where someone asks Isaac to play Dukes Up and he replies, "I wouldn't even play that in the band it was written for!" to raucous laughter.  Things have changed.

Their live audience has been comprised of creeps long before they blew up big(or, rather, bigger). Maybe it's just unfortunate coincidence, but every time I've seen them (the first time being in 2001) I've been subjected to the dredges of the concert-going public.

Coincidentally, almost every live show of their I've seen have been consistently disappoint. Unfocused, sloppy, and way too jammy for my tastes. It's a testament to how goddamned good their discography is that I kept going back to see them.

That all changed with the addition of Johnny Marr. Every show since then has been focused, energetic and incredibly technically proficient. He really added a dynamic to the band that I didn't think an outside input would necessarily bring.

The best set I've seen them perform, though, was last October (one of the shows they performed Four Fingered Fisherman, actually) at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit. It was acoustic, included banjo and horns, slightly reworked older material (a really fantastic Cowboy Dan). If they're bringing that kind of focus and musicianship to their next album... it'll be a pretty fucking fantastic progression.

I think there's a bootleg of both of their Bridge School sets floating around on the interwebs for anyone curious.

Story time!  I too had an unpleasant concert experience, summer '07.  I think I've seen them three or four times; third was worst.  Fourth was mellower.  Third was in Ohio.  Idiots moshing, climbing up on stage.  These dykes trying to hold hands, sneak past me, so I elbowed one in the boob, shoved her back, trying to hold my comfortable fifth row "spot".  Scenes like that are ripe for frottage, too.  It's filthy.  Invisible kicked off the concert and everyone started SHOVING.  Ridiculous!  I worked my way to the front, out of the insanity.  I got out of that sea and moved back into the more mellow crowd.  Of course, security didn't give a shit about that, but they couldn't have me sitting down on steps.  Oh no. So, this scrawny security guy told me to move.  I said, dude, I'm not hurting anything.  Those idiots up front are ruining our enjoyment of the concert.  Why don't you go do your job and take care of THAT?  I forget what happened next.  I think he came back later to harass me some more.  He tried to grab me, I jerked away.  Shoulda slugged him then, but before I knew it, I was escorted out by three security dudes.  They let me back in eventually, but it painted that experience as very sour.  You don't fucking mosh to Modest Mouse.

Like WWD it?  I love it!  The only, and I mean only, weak track ON that album is We've Got Everything.  It's one rare instance where an artist doesn't understand his best material.  That that was a single is telling.  Or maybe it was label pressure.  But, track by track, we've got MM immediately going to its roots to March into the Sea, flirting with death.  Then its crowd pleaser Dashboard, danceable, and even more catchy than Float On if such a thing is possible.  Fire It Up, a bit too mellow for my taste (still, decent lyrics), but Florida picks things up again, harkening back to Ohio (more roots).  Parting of the Sensory is one of the most gritty, exhausting, invigorating death dirges ever created.  Missed the Boat is lyrically and musically one of best tracks they've ever put together:

Tiny curtains opened and we heard a tiny clap of little hands and a tiny man would tell a little joke and get a tiny laugh from all them folks, sitting, drifting 'round in bubbles and thinking it was us that carried them when we finally got it figured out that we had truly missed the boat.

Chills, and I still haven't processed why the imagery does that for me, but that's poetry.  We've Got Everything is forgiveable, because FLY TRAPPED IN A JAR is up next.  This song absolutely KILLS live, and the recorded version isn't too shabby either.  Raw, gritty, more of Isaac's death obsession.  Education, Little Motel, Steam Engenius: all very solid, though I expected a LITTLE better from a song called Education coming from Isaac, considering his love of the esoteric.  Spitting Venom is their magnum opus, and he knew it would be.  8+ minutes of pure bliss and a use of horns that just makes you feel happy, even in the midst of heartbreak.  There was a moment at a Sunset Rubdown concert that reminded me of this: dude who had a few too many blurted out in between songs, so earnestly, "Your music makes me feel so happy inside!"  That it does.

Cheer up little baby it wasn't always quite so bad, for every bit of venom that came out the antidote was had.

Side note, back in '07 MM performed live for YRock in Philadelphia in an amazing concert, broadcast on Internet radio.  He riffed about Uno, and he absolutely JAMMED his heart out on a 16-minute version of Spitting Venom/I Came as a Rat tease.  It is my favorite performance of theirs ever.  There is some scatting, some unintelligible lyrics (which I would love if someone could translate), and he botches the first verse early on.  But, hearing the horns come out and the crowd cheer, hearing the mix of old and new, it's all so incredibly uplifting.

People as Places as People ain't too bad either, but the clinchers are Invisible (In Your Car) (hey there, dancing shifter with your strong cell phone arm...) and King Rat (which came later, and is a defining song of the band -- after all, what else can complement a Modest Mouse BUT a King Rat?).  Invisible is noteworthy for the structure it invokes on the album as a whole. Look back to Moon and Antartica, with a song of a VERY similar style and structure in what people are made of.  It's followed by another tome similar to Spitting Venom in Life Like Weeds.  Relationships gone awry followed by a watery ocean death (what people are made of has "They ain't made of nothing but water and shit" versus Invisible's "We will be crushed by the ocean but it will not get us wet").

Isaac has mellowed, sure, but he hasn't softened, and creatively, though Long Drive in my opinion contained some of his most complex arrangements and satisfying lyrics, he's still gonna be cranking it out for years to come.  End artist fellatio.

Will definitely look into finding that bootleg.  There are some rarities that must be heard through bootleg for the hardcore MM fan. (Four Leaf Clover is one of my faves, as is the Fishes jam for Trailer Trash, I think it is).

I haven't talked exhaustively to many people about WWD, so I wasn't aware of their being a collective opinion on the album - good or bad - but your assessment of it is spot on with mine. Track by track, I can't see anything you've said that I disagree with.

You've probably already read this, but Big Boi shared a few (vague) details regarding their collaboration:

I've never talked to a single person who hasn't hated that album. I really don't understand it.

Recently, as in the past several months, two very early demos of MM work have surfaced: "Tube Fruit, All Chocolate and Smiles" and "Uncle Bunny Faces".  I have them both, or you can find them via torrents.  They are surprisingly decent for early work.  Not as good as Sad Sappy Sucker (though I happen to be just as fond of that one as all their other work), but still possessing merit.  Tube Fruit is sprawling, almost filling a whole CD at 1:16 minutes runtime.  I've only listened to it once a few months ago, so I don't remember much.  Uncle Bunny Smiles is better, and only about 20 minutes.  Really reminiscent of what they'd go on to do with Long Drive, and for good reason (though Tube Fruit does have those touches and references, too).  Noteworthy tracks on UBS: South of Heaven, Blue Wave, and I Ain't Playin' No Tundra.  On Tube Fruit: I marked Go On Out... and Novicain [sic] as decent.  Who knows what subsequent listens will reveal.

Thanks, man. I really appreciate that, been going through mouse withdrawal. You know what's been taking too long? That Big Boi, modest mouse collabo.. Maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up so much for a rock/rap thingy though. They usually suck.

Such a relaxing, happy video.  Maybe the lyrics belie that, but I'm just enjoying the vibe right now.

There are worse things I could talk to myself about.  The latest single, and the best IMO.  Though maybe that's just 'cause it's the one I've heard last.
