haha, that post was awesome. I was so happy in between epeleptic fits. It was like I had an extra chromosome and someone threw some skittles at me.

Oscar poster mines retro, pop

A poster designed by a self-described computer geek has been chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as its 77th Annual Academy Awards commemorative poster.

Brett Davidson, a 10-year staff member of the Academy who works as an information systems support specialist in the IT department, was the winning designer, selected in a blind competition.

"I wanted a big, bold Oscar but a treatment we've never seen before," Davidson said Tuesday morning as he did color checks at Anderson Printing in Hollywood when the poster came off the presses. "I wanted something retro and '50s in its development but also to have a contemporary edge to it. The color palette is also pop-art inspired. The Academy has been slowly moving in that direction, so I wanted to take it to the next level."

Davidson, who studied film and design at the University of Miami as well as USC, has submitted designs in the past. He said he looked to pop artists Andy Warhol and Peter Maxx for inspiration as well as such classic Oscar poster designers as Saul Bass and Arnold Schwartzman.

"The Oscar is the granddaddy of all award shows, but it's not an old man," Davidson said of the poster's theme. "I want people to see that youthful energy. There's a lot of (other award shows) out there, and the Academy can and will compete with it."

Davidson said he has no plans to leave his day job.

Lumet Nets Honorary Oscar

All those dog day afternoons have paid off for Sidney Lumet.

The acclaimed filmmaker, whose résumé is stacked with such celluloid classics as Dog Day Afternoon, 12 Angry Men, Serpico, Network and The Verdict, has been tapped by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an honorary Academy Award at the Oscar ceremony in Feburary.

The 80-year-old director was selected to receive the hardware for "brilliant services to screenwriters, performers and the art of the motion picture."

According to Academy president Frank Pierson, Lumet's status as "one of the most important film directors in the history of American cinema" was what let to his selection.

"His work has left an indelible mark on both audiences and the history of film itself," Pierson said in a statement. "It was a great personal pleasure and professional honor to call Sidney to tell him he'd won his profession's highest honor."

Lumet has helmed more than 40 films, chalking up several Academy Award nominations but no wins.

The Philadelphia native got his show-biz start as an actor, making his stage debut at the ripe age of four. As an adult, he moved behind the camera and started directing in television. He then segued into feature films in 1957 with 12 Angry Men, which earned him a Best Director Oscar nod.

He received three other directing nominations for Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976) and The Verdict (1982) and picked up a Best Adapted Screenplay nod in for 1981's Prince of the City.

Lumet's credits also include Running on Empty, The Wiz, Equus, Murder on the Orient Express, Fail-Safe, The Pawnbroker and Long Day's Journey into Night.

Lumet will receive the trophy during the Feb. 27 Oscarcast airing live on ABC from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles and hosted by Chris Rock. Nominations for the 77th annual Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 25.

Jamie Foxx is dominating! I'm kind of irked at the Winslet/Sunshine nod, I don't think it was deserved at all, she was really cheesy and not too good imo in that movie, well not her, but the actual character. Marty will win the best directing award.

thoughts:

I had a feeling Hotel Rwanda would get the nom over Ray, I was wrong.
I am a little surprised with Eastwood's actor nom.
I was hoping Delpy would get a best actress nom.
I also thought Gondry might get a Directing nom, i was wrong.
Disappointed about Collateral not getting a best cinematography nom.

Impressive 11 noms by The Aviator.  It looks like it could be Marty's year but Million Dollar Baby is picking up steam.

I was really happy when Before Sunset was nominated for screenplay--however, I still don't understand why it's nominated for adapted.

i'm SHOCKED that kate winslet is up for eternal sunshine and not finding neverland.   :bravo:
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Life Aquatic not getting a nomination for art direction is pretty weak, but I guess I'm not surprised.

The problem with most award ceremonies is even if technical aspects of a film are great, it will get overlooked if it's not an amazing film with a lot of buzz, or if the technical aspects aren't incredibly apparent.  This year, read: Life Aquatic and I Heart Huckabees.

Gamblour.

Quote from: wantautopia? The big travesty is no Giamatti.  That is all.

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so! fucking! pissed! about this! I fucking hate this shit. They fill Giamatti's nomination with Clint Eastwood. Way to go Academy. The old safety.

How is Jamie Foxx supporting for Collateral? He's clearly the main fucking character. While he was good in that movie, an oscar nom? Please, let him have the Ray nom and that's it. I'm also pissed Collateral didn't get cinem. nomination.

I do feel good that Virginia Madsen got nominated for Sideways, that's awesome. Church is a good one too. Does Giamatti have to play a retard or impersonate a real person (oh wait he already did in American Splendor) to earn these people's affections? Christ. I'm mad.

I don't know if it was eligible, but if it was I am ecstatic: no nomination for Fahrenheit 9/11? That's awesome. It was a piece of shit. I didn't see Tupac: Resurrection...how did that get up there?

I wish the Aviator got a best visual effects nomination. Also, I love the Village score nomination.

Ok I'm done.
WWPTAD?

Fernando

I thought Bardem would get a nod, instead they gave it to Clint, is he that good in his flim?

Also, all the talk about Giamatti's performance and was again snubbed.

This years noms =  :yabbse-undecided:

I'm glad about Aviator though.
