Post by: Spike on September 08, 2003, 06:27:10 AM
There's no Nirvana-thread to date, so I'll open one.
Nirvana is my favourite band ever. I really enjoyed each of their songs, especially "In Bloom", "Love Buzz", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Heart-Shaped Box", "Lithium" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
Really a shame that Kurt Cobain shot himself.

So, what do you think about Nirvana?

i love nirvana, for different reasons now then when i was younger....it's great to see people that i work with sing along to their songs and they were only six years old when 'smells like teen spirit' came out....i was ten at the time....it's weird they debuted almost fifteen years ago....where does the time go?

I used to love them, but I've grown to dislike them.  All but their Unplugged album Live in New York, which i still think is great.

I didn't get into them unti later, after Kurt was dead. A movie about Nirvana is the only true-story I'd ever like to tell on film. I know exactly how I'd begin it. I remember the day of his suicide and some kid showed up to school with his name carved in his arm and that made a really big impression on me. I tried to capture something of what they meant to people in my first film, Lullaby, but it didn't come across too well.

They're my favorite band, but I've grown sick and tired of talking about them, you know? Like you all mention The Beatles, it's the same with them.

"Hey, you know, my favorite band is the Beatles."
"Yep, they sure are great."
"Yep, they sure are."
"..."
"..."

Anyway, I don't want to kill the topic. Please discuss, maybe I'll join in.

QuoteA movie about Nirvana is the only true-story I'd ever like to tell on film.

Ghostboy, I you never end up doing this, I promise you I will. The thing that bothers me though, is that Ewan McGregor is perfect for the role, today, and will be to old the day someone decides to do this. Too bad, I'll see if I can find some pictures to compare, in certain poses, they're nearly identical. And for all you Nirvana fans out there, you all oughta read "Come As You Are", and the Kurt bio "Heavier than Heaven". I got shivers down my spine when I read the last page of "Heaven", it's really good.

-----

Fuck, I think I killed the thread.  :(

Anyone looking foreward to the Rarities Box Set rumored to be coming next year? (I sure am)

Political life is no Nirvana for bassist
From Associated Press

Former grunge rocker Krist Novoselic has changed his mind and decided not to run for lieutenant governor of the state of Washington, but he wants to remain active in politics.

Novoselic said he will keep working with Music for America to boost voter participation among young people and continue his efforts for election reform, but he concluded that "the whole thing about running a campaign and being a public servant isn't the way to do it."

Novoselic was the bass player and a founder of Nirvana, which broke up after the suicide of co-founder Kurt Cobain in 1994. Novoselic had some later musical projects but is now retired from performing and lives in southwest Washington state.

"I found out firsthand that it's really considered bad form to run against an incumbent of your own party," he said.

Kurt Cobain Wanted to Quit Nirvana

SEATTLE (United Press International) -- Kurt Cobain wanted to quit Nirvana to join his wife Courtney Love's band, the Seattle grunge rocker said in a previously-unseen interview in Uncut magazine.

Cobain, who committed suicide in April 1994, is quoted as saying in the article: "To tell you the truth, I would rather just quit my band and join Hole," the BBC reported Friday.

Cobain also discussed his desire to move away from the grunge rock scene he helped make famous.

"It might be nice to start playing acoustic guitar and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter, rather than a grunge rocker," he said in the interview, which was originally meant for French TV.

"I could sit down on a chair and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash or something, and it won't be a big joke."

Following Cobain's death, Nirvana's surviving members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, publicly battled Love over the band's music and royalties.

Grohl went on to form the Foo Fighters; Novoselic has worked on a variety of musical projects

Nirvana was the only band from this neck of the woods' little hyped-up "grunge" boredom of the nineties that had anything to say. Cobain was dead set on undercutting any macho cock-rock-isms falsely attributed to his band, which is to be respected; they could always be counted on to show up in Oregon to play benefit concerts to defeat anti-gay ballot measures there. Certainly, Cobain would've been chuffed to see gay marriage making headlines. Not least, they knew about melody, something way too many guitar bands forego (maybe melody is too sissy for them...?), and dynamics. In other words, they had a style.

Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" is an okay single, but they're not a great band. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains... they all mean less than nothing to me. Wastes of time.

I loved Hole's last two albums, but they're hardly "grunge"; much more "new wave," I'd say.

Portland has The Dandy Warhols and Sleater-Kinney... but then, Portland has always been way cooler than Seattle.

Perfectly (you seriously have no idea of how perfectly) sums up my love for Nirvana and Cobain. And that quote about going accustic, it just brakes my heart. Unplugged in New York is my favorite Nirvana record, and I would've died to hear what Cobain might've done in that vein.

WATCH NIRVANA IN THE DARK

The long-awaited Nirvana box set 'WITH THE LIGHTS OUT' will feature 68 previously unreleased recordings.

Released on November 22, the four-disc set will feature 81 tracks including 68 previously unreleased recordings - rehearsals, outtakes, Kurt's home demos, as well as a DVD which is confirmed to have unreleased band home movies, live footage, rehearsal footage and 20 full-length video performances. A 60-page booklet will accompany the release.

The title is a reference to a lyric in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

A source told NME.COM: "I've seen some of the footage and it's amazing stuff. There's a video of them performing at a friend's party with Kurt reading lyrics off a sheet of paper on the wall, footage of them covering 'Seasons In The Sun' in a studio with Kurt on drums and lots of other great stuff."

The artwork for the set is currently being put together, with the likely choice being a 'landscape' box, retailing in the region of £40-50.

JESUS KRIST!

KRIST NOVOSELIC is auctioning himself off on EBAY. A private plane ride and lunch with the former Nirvana bass player has been put up for sale on the site. While Novoselic is more occupied with his political career in Washington than rock these days, he is also a keen pilot with his own Cessna 182 Skylane Jet. The successful bidder will be picked up at a US West Coast airport of their choice and flown to a restaurant of their choice. The auction is in aid of People For The American Way, which bills itself as "a non-profit, non-partisan organisation committed to promoting political awareness, civic participation and providing legislators with the support they need to counter the agenda of the extreme right and protect against encroachments upon our freedoms and civil rights". Novoselic said: "I am happy to share the wonders of aviation and remind the winners to be careful during the most dangerous phase of flight – the drive to and from the airport." You can check the progress of the auction, or bid yourself, by clicking here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=16071&item=2289137864&rd=1).

Nirvana's 1991 record Nevermind has been voted the most overrated album of all time by BBC 6 Music listeners.

Presenter Andrew Collins, a Nirvana fan, announced the results on Saturday, calling everyone who had voted for the Seattle grunge band's record "mad".

Coldplay's X&Y came second in the survey, followed by The Libertines' self-titled second album at three.

6 Music's Ric Blaxill said the poll had given the digital station's listeners the chance to "address the hyperbole".

"These results may upset Nirvana's legion of loyal fans," he added.

"But it goes without saying that one person's overrated album will be another's film favourite."

Albums by such established bands as Oasis, U2, Radiohead and the Beatles also feature in the Top 10.

Listeners were invited to submit their nominations, which were whittled down to a shortlist of 10 and put to a public vote.

"I'm surprised to see Coldplay's X&Y at number two," continued Me Blaxill, who attributed the band's high placing in the chart to "the influence of extensive media coverage".

"This poll has given our listeners the opportunity to tell us what they really think."

'MOST OVERRATED ALBUMS'
1. Nirvana - Nevermind
2. Coldplay - X&Y
3. The Libertines - The Libertines
4. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
5. U2 - The Joshua Tree
6. Radiohead - OK Computer
7. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
8. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
9. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
10. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

The Coldplay thing is just retarded.  It was released a few months ago... and the general response, even from fans, was that it wasn't their best.  How did it get overrated?

Maybe the buzz on it in England is entirely different.  Or just too much media coverage in England that the crowds started to turn on them.

^- the top 10 most overrated albums as voted by the BBC. = bull crap.

If you listen to Nevermind now, sure it may sound overrated to some people... but they seem to forget what happened in 1991.

Another reason I know that list is bullshit is because 'ok computer' isn't number 1.

Because it's overrated doesn't mean it isn't good.

I haven't met anyone who didn't like OK Computer, unless they hated Radiohead to be different.  Nirvana's Nevermind may have defined a generation, but it was a pretty weak album.  Beatles defined a generation, but they became consistent with their albums.  If Nirvana were to release Nevermind now, who'd give a shit?  (Aside from Kurt coming back from the dead and their droves of fans worshipping him with more proof that he may be a messiah)

Nirvana documentary 'brings Kurt to life'

Film tells Cobain's story - in his own words.

A new Nirvana documentary is in the making - one which will be narrated by Kurt Cobain himself.

Film makers were in the singer's home town of Aberdeen, Washington recently to start work on a documentary about Cobain.

However in a unique twist the singer himself will narrate the film, with producers using more than 25 hours of interview tapes recorded by journalist Michael Azerrad between December 1992 and March 1993.

Azerrad is most famous for his Nirvana biography 'Come As You Are', which is regarded as one of the most authoratitive books on the band.

"The film is based on a series of interviews that Michael Azerrad conducted with Kurt while researching the book. There are more than 25 hours of these audio interviews in all, none of which have been heard before by anyone," director AJ Schnack told NME.COM.

"I worked with Michael to cull an approximately 95-minute audio track from these interviews. While I'm not sure that 'narrated' is exactly the right word, you will be listening in on conversations between Kurt and Michael, with Kurt telling his life story for that book. There are no additional interviews with other figures from Kurt's life, just Kurt speaking, with an occasional question or comment from Michael."

The other members of Nirvana are not involved with the currently untitled film, which is set to be screened at various film festivals next autumn.

Schnack added: "It pretty much covers his whole life leading-up to the interviews with the emphasis being more on him and his general take on things rather than on general band developments. We're not using any archival footage at all. The music will focus on bands that influenced Kurt during the various stages of his life. It's unclear what part, if any, Nirvana music may play in the finished film."

Nirvana made being EMO "cool". :|

I don't think we'd have bands like "Deathcab for Cutie" without them.

Universal tunes up Cobain feature
Benioff to write drama on Nirvana frontman
Source: Variety

Universal Pictures has set David Benioff to write an untitled drama about the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

Studio has acquired rights to "Heavier Than Heaven," a Cobain biography written by Charles Cross.

Pic is a co-production between Working Title and Reveille Motion Pictures. Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan, Ben Silverman and Graham Larson will produce. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, will exec produce with Howard Weitzman.

Silverman developed the film at Reveille before leaving to run NBC, and Weitzman is Love's lawyer.

The producers and studio would not address whether they had locked down music rights, or the nature of the story they are trying to tell. For "Heavier Than Heaven," Cross had access to Cobain's unpublished diaries as well as Cobain's friends and family members.

Cobain formed Nirvana in 1987 with bassis Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, the latter of whom now fronts the Foo Fighters. Led by Cobain's growling delivery, inventive guitar work and lyrics that appealed to a disaffected young generation, Nirvana ushered in the Seattle grunge music movement in the early '90s with hits like "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Cobain's life was marked by depression and drug use, and he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994, leaving behind his wife and a daughter.

Benioff most recently scripted "The Kite Runner" as well as the Gavin Hood-directed X-Men spinoff film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Brothers," the Jim Sheridan-directed drama.
