Kidman to star in Arbus biopic

Nicole Kidman is in negotiations to play photographer Diane Arbus in the upcoming project, "Fur." Robert Downey Jr. also is in negotiations to join the project.

Steven Shainberg is set to direct "Fur," which would mark his first feature since his quirky 2002 hit, "Secretary." The script is being written by his "Secretary" scribe, Erin Cressida Wilson, who is adapting from Patricia Bosworth's book "Diane Arbus: A Biography."

Previously known as the untitled Diane Arbus project, Bonnie Timmermann is producing "Fur," along with River Road's Bill Pohlad and Laura Bickford. Shainberg's production partner, Andrew Fierberg, also is producing. Bosworth and Vincent Farrell of Iron Films are co-producing, and Edward R. Pressman will serve as an executive producer.

Arbus is considered one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century and was known for her often disturbing and strange images. She committed suicide in 1971.

At one point last year, Samantha Morton was in negotiations for the role.

being a big arbus fan, i think this idea is absolutely terrible - i can't believe her estate, which is legendery for the protection of exhibiting her photographs, is giving the go ahead for this project(or maybe they haven't). I don't see any way of tastefully making a film about her life, it will most likely trivialize and exploit the darker element of her life(her depression/suicide etc.). If a film must be made of arbus give it to someone who would have a little better grasp on such a life -- schnabel may be able to pull this off. shaninburg is a fucking hack - no two ways about it. i have nothing against kidman, but shes just wrong for this role. samantha morton would at least be tolerable. this is disapointing news.

Kidman Versus the Body Snatchers

Things are moving fast on the new Invasion of the Body Snatchers film. The project was just announced this month, and we already have the first bit of casting news. According to Production Weekly, Nicole Kidman (Bewitched, Moulin Rouge) has been snagged for a leading role in the science fiction remake. She'll play the female protagonist, a resident of a small town who begins to investigate when the personalities of the local folk start to change. The culprit, of course, is an alien conspiracy to infiltrate and replace humans with extraterrestrial invaders.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is set to begin shooting this October.

German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, Das Experiment) is helming the picture.

Kidman in PARTY Mode

Nicole Kidman could soon be hosting a Bachelorette Party. Twentieth Century Fox has picked up the rights to the novel The Bachelorette Party from Legally Blonde writer Karen McCullah Lutz as a starring vehicle for the Oscar-winning Kidman.

Bachelorette will star Kidman as a Los Angeles high school teacher who has recently been left at the altar. Putting on a happy face, she must attend the bachelorette party of her cousin...who happens to be marrying the teacher's best guy friend. When the cousin has a drunken indiscretion at the party, the teacher must decide where her loyalties lie. Lutz will be adapting her own novel, which St. Martin's Press published.

Kidman will produce the project with Rick Schwartz through their Blueprint Films banner. Alloy Entertainment will also be a production shingle on the project. Robbie Brenner will be the executive in charge for Fox.

Kidman and Watts Have a Need

"Nip/Tuck" creator Ryan Murphy is firming plans to spend his hiatus directing Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts in Need, a thriller to be produced by Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal. Variety says independent financing is being mobilized for a late fall start.

Kidman and Watts, friends since they were young actresses in Australia, have been looking for a project to do together. The sexy thriller will cast them as archenemies: Watts will play a psychiatrist, Kidman the unstable patient who steals the shrink's husband.

Murphy has also just signed a multiyear deal worth $15 million that's so big, it spans three News Corp. entities: FX, 20th Century Fox TV and the Fox net. Under the deal, Murphy will stay on as showrunner for a fifth season of FX's top-rated "Nip/Tuck." At the same time, he'll exclusively develop series with 20th Century Fox.

Kidman to star in 'Monte Carlo'

Nicole Kidman is attached to star in and produce "Monte Carlo," a romantic comedy that Fox 2000 and New Regency are co-financing. Pic will be directed and co-written by Tom Bezucha.

Project is one of two Bezucha will make for Fox 2000; he'll also direct "Orbit," an adaptation of the John Nance novel scripted by Sheldon Turner ("The Longest Yard"). Jennifer Klein is producing through her Apartment 3B banner.

Bezucha has just turned in a draft of "Monte Carlo" that he wrote with Maria Maggenti. Pic is an adaptation of the Jules Bass novel "Headhunters."

Kidman, who'll produce with Rick Schwartz, will play one of three Midwestern schoolteachers who ditch a disappointing no-frills holiday in Paris and pose as wealthy women vacationing in Monaco.

The helmer will simultaneously develop "Orbit" with Turner. That drama revolves around a civilian who, after winning a trip on a space shuttle, awakens to find himself alone and adrift after the entire crew has died.

Turner and Klein set "Orbit" at the studio in late 2005.

"The project is a totally different kind of film for Tom, but the core of the story is the relationship stuff he's so good at," Turner said. "The scope of the film is enormous, but at heart, this is a family drama about a guy who was in orbit long before he went into space, when he lost his son."

Kidman is starring with Hugh Jackman in the Baz Luhrmann-directed period epic "Australia" for Fox.

Bezucha directed "The Family Stone" for Fox 2000.

Turner has turned in a script on an "X-Men" spinoff about Magneto that David Goyer will direct for 20th Century Fox, and the scribe and Klein also are teamed on the Fox drama "Two Minutes to Midnight."

Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes will star in "The Reader" for the Weinstein Co.

Pic is a love story based on the bestselling novel by German writer Bernhard Schlink.

Stephen Daldry is directing a script by David Hare.

Mirage Productions partners Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack are producing with Scott Rudin. Shooting begins in Berlin late September.

The setting is contemporary Germany, where a man recounts the story of his erotic awakening in a covert love affair with an older woman in the wake of WWII.

The book was an international bestseller and was published in the U.S. by Pantheon.

Minghella and Pollack acquired the book and invited Rudin and the other elements aboard.

The project is a reunion of several of the creatives. Kidman, Daldry, Hare and Rudin last collaborated on "The Hours," for which the actress won an Oscar. She has worked with Minghella on "Cold Mountain" and Pollack on "The Interpreter." Fiennes starred for Minghella in "The English Patient."

Kidman just opened alongside Daniel Craig in "The Invasion," and follows with the Rudin-produced "Margot at the Wedding" and then "The Golden Compass." Fiennes was just seen as Lord Voldemort in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

Nicole Kidman as the world's first post-op transsexual, married to Charlize Theron? You betcha.

Kidman will star in and produce "The Danish Girl," based on the true story of Danish artists Einar and Greta Wegener. Their marriage took a sharp left turn after Einar (Kidman) stood in for an female model that Greta (Theron) was set to paint.

When their portraits become wildly popular in 1920s Copenhagen, Greta encouraged her husband to adopt the female guise. What began as a harmless game led Einar to a metamorphosis and landmark 1931 operation that shocked the world and threatened their love.

Anand Tucker ("Shopgirl") is attached to direct the feature, adapted by writer Lucinda Coxon ("Wild Target") from David Ebershoff's 2000 Viking bestseller. His debut novel of the same name is a fictionalized account of the Wegeners' true story.

The producers, no strangers to daring indie fare, are Gail Mutrux ("Kinsey"), Anne Harrison ("Two Family House"), Linda Reisman ("Affliction"), Kidman and the head of her Fox-based Blossom Films shingle, Per Saari. Blossom has several projects in development, including a biopic of bisexual singer Dusty Springfield set to star Kidman.

Kathy Morgan International is repping AFM presales on "Girl," a period piece that's taken on a very modern resonance with this week's votes to ban gay marriage in California, Florida and Arizona. Both the CAA-repped Kidman and the One Entertainment-repped Theron earned their best actress Oscars playing lesbian characters, in "The Hours" and "Monster," respectively.

Pre-production has begun on the indie film, but no details on a principal photography start date have been disclosed.
