Pictures Of You pretty much hits the nail on the head for me.

Although, when I'm in that kind of mood, I usually listen to love songs instead. Glutton for punishment, I am.

Give Me My Money Back, You Bitch by Ben Folds is a good antithesis to when you're feeling really down about a girl.

Fiona Apple tops it all with "Love Ridden".

Only kisses on the cheek from now on,
And in a little while, you'll only have to wave."

Sigh

Argh, so true.
"And in a little while, you'll only have to wave" - this line kills me, because I can't imagine me ever being in the emotional state to do that. It's been 26 day since I've seen him.
Fortunately, I've been trying not to listen to FA's song, "Get Him Back" from hew new album Extroadinary Machine.

At the moment, to get me through (or encourage my wallowing, who knows) I've been listening to alot of French Kicks stuff (esp. the album The Trial of the Century)

Ben Folds - Mess
Wilco - Radio Cure ("Cheer up Honey, I hope you can")
PJ Harvey - Shame ("Shame is the Shadow of Love"). Basically the whole of Uh Huh Her.
And for a bit of optimism, I Love Space - Birds Attack. For the line, "You're free now, you can do whatever you.."  (They are a Sydney band by the way http://www.welovespace.tv/flash.html)

The nail was hit on the head by both Sea Change and pretty much all of Fiona Apple's catalog.

Angry breakup:
Jay-Z - 99 Problems (mostly just for the chorus, kind of liberating)
Everclear - Now That It's Over
Ben Folds Five - Song for the Dumped
Nine Inch Nails - Reptile

Mopey breakup:
No Doubt - Don't Speak
Ben Folds Five - Selfless, Cold and Composed
Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Beck - Rowboat

Especially the lyrics to the Vandals' "My Girlfriend's Dead."

I once had a girlfriend,
But then one day she dumped me and everywhere
I'd go people would ask me where she was.

I don't want to talk about her.
Someone always asks about her.
So I tell them all my girlfriend's dead.

I say it's leukemia or sometimes bulimia
Or a great big truck ran her over
And chopped off her head.

I don't want to talk about her.
Someone always asks about her.
So I tell them all she's dead.

I guess there's a part of me that likes the sympathy
Or the looks on their faces when I tell them how
She passed away.

I don't want to talk about her.
But someone always asks about her.
So I tell them all she's dead.

My girlfriend's dead you see,
It's a total lie - but it's easier on me
Than having to admit that she like's someone else.

My girlfriend's dead you know,
Please change the subject or I am going to go
Jump off a building and join her in heaven

I don't really know anything about the Vandals, but those lyrics remind me of the funny little story told by Sparks' "Here in Heaven," in which a young man sings resentfully from heaven to the paramour who encouraged him to commit suicide and then went on with their life. It's a great song.

That's me. Learn to love it.
Or you could point me in the direction of the "best break-up movies" thread?

I've just finished my degree (Journalism) and suddenly I got all this spare time - So I'm looking to get back into drawing and watching films. You know, whilst I'm unemployed and recently single and all.

Who knows, I might then even post more about movies rather than my ex.

Bitter breakup = David Poe's "Silver Eyelashes":

This is the beginning of a song
about the end of our lives
Honey don't get me wrong when I say
I hope you die soon
I hope you live hard
i hope it's dark now in your room
I hope your heart becomes stone
I hope it's heavy
I hope it feels like you died and then you do

if I can't have you
I don't want anyone else to

Robot works good today
You can self-medicate
You can swim the seas without the waves
I can't believe your silver eyelashes
I can't believe how the mermaid fades

I know you hide your love away
Somewhere inside your perfect body

You're not alive, you're just alone
I hope you die slow
on shiny lies he made you believe
and then he leaves
and you have nothing left
except to come back to me

Do you feel anything yet?
I only want my hands around your neck
Your sweet sweet breath
when you drink all night
and sleep like the dead

I hope I die soon
I'm so numb it wouldn't hurt
and you're just waiting like a landmark to get saved
and my heart's already stopped beating
and I've loved you in the most pathetic ways

but if I can't have you
I don't want anyone else to

Nostalgic breakup = Counting Crows' "Anna Begins"

My friend assures me, "It's all or nothing."
I am not worried
I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me, "For one time only,
make an exception."
I am not worried
Wrap her up in a package of lies
Send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried
I am not overly concerned
with the status of my emotions
"Oh," she says, "you're changing."
But we're always changing

It does not bother me to say
This isn't love
Because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love
And I guess I'm going to have to live with that
But I'm sure there's something in a shade of grey,
Something in between,
And I can always change my name
If that's what you mean

My friend assures me, "It's all or nothing."
But I am not really worried
I am not overly concerned
You try to tell yourself the things you try to tell yourself
To make yourself forget, to make yourself forget
I am not worried
"If it's love," she said, "then we're going to have to think about the consequences."
She can't stop shaking
I can't stop touching her

And this time, when kindness falls like rain
It washes her away
And Anna begins to change her mind
"These seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering for days," she says
And I'm not ready for this sort of thing

But I'm not going to break, and I'm not going to worry about it anymore
I'm not going to bend, and I'm not going to break, and I'm not going to worry about it anymore
It seems like I should say, "As long as this is love..."
But it's not all that easy, so maybe I should
Snap her up in a butterfly net
Pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried
I've done this sort of thing before
But then I start to think about the consequences
Because I don't get no sleep in a quiet room

And this time, when kindness falls like rain
It washes me away
And Anna begins to change my mind
And everytime she sneezes I believe it's love and
Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

She's talking in her sleep
It's keeping me awake
And Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense, but I understand and
Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

Her kindness bangs a gong
It's moving me along
And Anna begins to fade away
It's chasing me away
She disappears and
Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing

How could I forget...

Mountain Goats - No Children

I hope that our few remaining friends
give up on trying to save us.
I hope we come out with a fail-safe plot
to piss off the dumb few that forgave us.

I hope the fences we mended
fall down beneath their own weight.
And I hope we hang on past the last exit,
I hope it's already too late.

And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
someday burns down.
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away,
and I never come back to this town again.

In my life, I hope I lie,
and tell everyone you were a good wife.
And I hope you die,
I hope we both die.

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow;
I hope it bleeds all day long.
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises;
we're pretty sure they're all wrong.

I hope it stays dark forever,
I hope the worst isn't over.
And I hope you blink before I do,
and I hope I never get sober.

And I hope when you think of me years down the line,
you can't find one good thing to say.
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out,
you'd stay the hell out of my way.

I am drowning.
There is no sign of land.
You are coming down with me,
hand in unlovable hand.

And I hope you die,
I hope we both die.

I've always had a soft spot for this song. It's pretty audacious, just repeating the same melody over and over for an entire song, with no chorus (going for the meditative thing, obviously). Lyrics are a bit clunky in the beginning, but the build is masterful, as are the harmonies when the climax arrives. I kind of love it. I remember that album having some other songs that I loved in exactly the same way (awkward lyrics, but some great songcraft).

Don't know if this is technically a "break up song", but is definitely a song I listened to when I had my first break-up (Isn't the sappy/emo/nostalgic/pathetic-after break up stage the best part of breaking up?) , the opening lines ares so tear-inducing.

EDIT:

Well, I won't win anyway. In the last months I've been dating two girls and when it started to get serious I just ran off scared shitless. I stopped answer their phone calls and so on. I might come off as a big asshole now but the fear of being left myself is...well, let's just say that I can't handle it.

Probably a bunch of Radiohead songs which may or may not be break-up songs but I just like to interpret them as such anyway.

Converge's Jane Doe is like the most brilliantly emotional and intense break-up album, and Beck's Sea Change is pretty strong on the whole break-up thing. And Pig Destroyer is great at that sort of thing, though it often ends with someone dying.
