It won the Golden Camera at the 2004 Cannes, but that's now at all why you should see it; you should see this movie because it is, for once, exactly as the box describes it:  "Tough, direct, and clear-headed."  The movie is fierce, without pity or histrionics.

It concerns an Israeli girl with a prostitute mother who won't allow herself to stay locked up in her apartment.  It allows the characters' actions to be its point, the camera is neutral and unmoving most of the time, and the actors are amazing.   There isn't an excessive scene in the movie, which, if you watch a lot of the urban dramas, you'll appreciate.

The best surprise I've had in a long time.
