casino vs. goodfellas

I've always been more fond of Casino for some reason. It just sat better with me. Goodfellas is good but something about it I can't put my finger on seems flawed. Don't know what exactly but there's just something thats keeping it from being an absolute favorite of mine whereas I had no problem whatsoever with Casino.

My favorite movie of all time is Good Fellas, it has a special place in my heart...

But I've seen both films a bunch of times and Casino is definetely better and underrated. Scorsese is much more secure in Casino, more confident...he really makes Casino a visual trip...

A few years ago, right before Boogie Nights, I started watching Casino very often, sometimes with the sound off, and I even watched it once only with the sound on, and without actually "seeing" it...let's say I listened to it and it is an amazingly well crafted movie. The colors are so vibrant, the way the music is used...I think visually, Casino is the biggest influence on boogie Nights...

De Niro is superb in Casino, so is everyone else...and I think Casino is slowly taking it's place, as I'm sure other "flawed" films by marty will with time...

LIke I have mentioned earlier in another thread Casino is better in every possible way your measure a filmby IMO...From reading the posts by PRO-Casino  fans I can say I agree w/ the reasons you guys like it more than Goodfellas.so I don;t need to stae reasons why b/c some have done a good job for me already.....

Casino and Goodfellas do have their similiarities. Both are great films, I love em both.

But If I have a choice between the two. I'll take Casino everytime.

It's more complex in many ways, and I enjoy the story much better.

i appreciate the craft of Casino more than Goodfellas.  I also like how Casino was so incredibly informative...i felt like i was watching a Casino documentary with style.

that slow motion take of Sharon Stone with 'Love is Strange' pinging in the background is one of my favorite shots ever.  A woman has never looked more attractive on screen.  

However I voted Goodfellas, because of all the characters, i care about Henry Hill the most.

they both went on for a little bit longer than they should've, i feel.

but goodfellas anyway because it had the "am i funny like a clown!??!" and the "go get your shoe shine box" scenes.  and more stuff that would only be spoilers...

For me, Goodfellas is by far the superior film. Its achievement in is the place of something unique for its genre nd instead of just trying to tell a story, it is specifically made to get the feeling of the life. Casino, using that same style, extends it and brings it into the more typical of it just acting for a specific story, and a Hollywood esque one at that and that is the rise and fall of a man from power. Not really the most unique thing, but for what Casino does, it is still effective. Goodfellas, though, captures what wasn't or likely be ever captured before on film in trying to go for the intoxication of power from a life instead of trying to focus on telling a genre story done time and time again.

I would rate them equally.  Perhaps Goodfellas is considered more of a classic because Scorsese set a precendent with it which he lives up to in Casino, Goodfellas is just simply more original and came first.  They're both great, though I think Casino has some more entertaining spice thrown in.  I'd saw they were both pretty equally crafted though.  Pax

I prefer Casino.  I love Casino.  Goodfellas is a great movie, but I like Casino a whole lot more.  It's a wonderful ride.

That's a coincidence; I just had a little Fassbinder-fest this last weekend in preparation for an article I'm writing, and had a chance to see some of Ballhaus's brilliant early work in Fox and his Friends and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant. I voted Goodfellas, but it was fucking painful to decide. I love both. I think Casino is the only really good movie Stone has ever been a part of, though I don't think she's untalented. Goodfellas has a little more discipline, I guess, though it's questionable how important that is when it comes to Scorsese's style of filmmaking.

I don't think they're really "the same." I hear that a lot, but I think that other than their both being mob stories, there's a significant enough difference between them that they don't really seem like a pair. Plus, don't forget that The Age of Innocence came in between. It wasn't like people were so tired of Scorsese making mobster movies that Casino just seemed like a retread, or something.
