metal appreciation thread

 i grew up listening to standard metal bands, slayer, megadeth, iron maiden, judas priest, black sabbath, pantera, opeth but after the whole indie thing came strong i forgot about it and even felt embarassed for liking it... i became a cheap hipster.  but now that i don't give a shit, i'm reivindicating with metal. good thing is i have good metalhead friends that can help. from here, i think RK likes metal, but aside from him i don't know if anyone else does. i've had this fantasy for a while about being very educated in metal , the same way some people are in jazz.

so right know i'm listening to dark tranquility, children of bodom, the haunted, the dillinger escape plan, dimmu borgir, and i think slipknot's pretty brutal. i am open to recommendations.

Metal is hard to defend sometimes because of negative association, but there are some pretty great albums.  I highly recommend...

First off, I can't recommend Mr. Bungle enough.  Particularly their self titled album.  And then...

tool is metal, progressive metal,  but the mars volta... no sir.

the only band i know that plays math metal for real is messhugah.

and i wouldn't call static x or white zombie metal.

You should look into Riot and their album Fire Down Under.  It's great early 80s straight up metal.  The song Run For Your Life is awesome.  Also you can't go wrong with Venom.

I wouldn't consider Mr. Bungle metal but I would consider it worth getting anyway.

My absolute fav. metal album and tool album is their new one: 10,000 days. Man, what a fucking heavy album. But, ya laturalus was my first tool album. Danzig, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, and Nightwish are pretty decent too.

I'd meet you half way on both of those.

tool isn't metal and mars volta has some metal influence.

metal shouldn't be only affiliated with distorted drop d tuning.  just look at slayer, there was major key metal back in the day.

Meshuggah and Between The Buried And Me are really heavy shit, and are totally all over the place in terms of time signatures, key changes, etc.  Both quite talented groups.

I'll have to go with just about anything black sabbath...i mean just check out the musicality, and how Tony Iommi has his guitar sound...wow. Awesome.
