NTSC (national telvision system committee) is the video format adopted as standard in america (us, canada, mexico and i think japan as well) by the FCC for broadcasting
it has:
-525 lines of resolution per frame
-runs at 30 frames per second
-60Hz field frequency
-requires 6MHz analog channel for transmission

PAL (phase alteration line) is the standard format for television broadcasts in in europe based on a 50Hz power system
it has:
-625 lines of resolution per frame
-runs at 25 frames per second
-50Hz field frequency
-Requires a 8MHz analog channel for transmission

PAL is a better looking format, but i think it is, or was, more expensive. theres also this joke, which will help you memorize the "ntsc" initials: Never The Same Color
