This movie is something special. Hittman is the female director's name I want to hear thrown around more often. This perceptive review on letterboxd says more than I could if I tried.

Pretty girls drink for free.

Edit - in her interview with MoMA, Hittman said that Beach Rat's single source frontal lighting style was inspired by the photographs of Barbara Crane, as well as Philippe Grandrieux's White Epilepsy (2012)
