Jesse Eisenberg, Isabelle Huppert & Gabriel Byrne To Star In Joachim Trier's 'Louder Than Bombs'
via The Playlist

One filmmaker who's a favorite around these parts is Norwegian Joachim Trier. The writer/director's first two features "Reprise" and "Oslo, August 31st" are impressive and expressive works, and so when it was announced well over a year ago that his next effort would be his English-language debut, we were very excited. In fact, this script was ready to go after "Reprise," but delays held it up, so Trier shot 'Oslo' instead. But it appears the wait has been worth it as he's assembled a solid trio to lead the movie.

Jesse Eisenberg, Isabelle Huppert and Gabriel Byrne are on board the movie drama, which has a pretty interesting premise. Previously described as utilizing a "Rashomon"-style plot conceit, the story "revolves around the character of a famous, late war photographer played by Huppert. On the eve of a retrospective of work, some three years after her untimely death, her husband and two sons discover an unsettling secret from her past."

Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger ("Election," "Cold Mountain," "Little Miss Sunshine") are producing, and we had heard at one point Ryan Gosling was being sought for the lead. And while that didn't pan out, it's hard to argue with this cast. Production begins this fall.

Bummer: Joachim Trier's 'Louder Than Bombs' Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Isabelle Huppert & Gabriel Byrne Scrapped
via The Playlist

Well, here's a bit of bummer news, particularly for those who are fans of Joachim Trier and are aching to see what the talented filmmaker does next. The director behind "Reprise" and "Oslo, August 31st" had been busy preparing what would be his biggest movie yet, an English language film entitled "Louder Than Bombs" featuring a great cast — Jesse Eisenberg, Isabelle Huppert, Gabriel Bryne — with plans to shoot this fall. But alas, it's not to be...

Screen Daily reports that production company Motlys has effectively kiboshed the movie — at least for now — as they were unable to raise the $6.6 million needed to shoot the movie. Kickstarter anyone? Previously described as utilizing a "Rashomon"-style plot conceit, the drama would've revolved around a late war photographer played by Huppert, whose husband and two sons discover a secret about her past as a retrospective of her work is being put together. And given that both of Trier's previous films dealt with history and memory, we were really curious to see how those themes would've been addressed here.

But, alas, it's not to be, though Motlys is claiming that this project could still happen at some point (provided they can get the finances together).

Sad and surprising, especially this close to shooting.

Joachim Trier's 'Louder Than Bombs' Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Isabelle Huppert & Gabriel Byrne Is Back On
via The Playlist

Late last summer, we found out Joachim Trier's English-language follow-up to "Oslo, August 31st"—which would have not only starred Eisenberg, but also Isabelle Huppert and Gabriel Bryne—would never make it in front of cameras due to being unable to raise the $6.6 million budget needed to shoot the movie. Thankfully, fortune has smiled upon us and the Franco-German TV network Arte has decided, per Cineuropa, to back Trier's "Louder Than Bombs" under their cinematic branch, Arte France Cinema.

The cast will remain the same for the Trier and Eskil Vogt-scripted drama that will revolve around a late war photographer played by Huppert, whose husband and two sons discover a secret about her past as a retrospective of her work is being put together. Interestingly, the film has been described as having a "Rashomon"-style plot conceit. We're big fans of Trier and can't wait to see how it all comes together. "Louder Than Bombs" is set to shoot this fall.

Great news. Norway doesn't have many talents like this and it would be a shame if didn't get the chance to evolve.

I remember quite a few people here loved "Reprise", but did anybody see "Oslo, August 31st"?

Oslo is the only one of his that I've seen and it's fantastic. Great performance and truly heartbreaking filme. It has also been on my mind ever since the sad news about PSH...

Joachim Trier Goes Supernatural For His 'Louder Than Bombs' Follow-Up 'Thelma'
via The Playlist

After receiving mixed-to-positive results from his English-language debut, "Louder Than Bombs" earlier this year, director Joachim Trier ("Oslo, August 31st") is ready to return back home to his natural tongue for his next project. But that doesn't mean he's playing it safe this time around.

The Norwegian director jumps into genre filmmaking with "Thelma," and according to producer Thomas Robsham, it'll be "an exciting new departure" for the dramatic filmmaker. To be more specific, this new film is a romantic supernatural thriller, following a young woman unaware that she possess frightening powers. Sounds like some pretty typical stuff, right? But under Trier's unique perception and specifically realistic character work, expect something a little out-of-the-ordinary. And, hopefully, something pretty special too. While Trier took around three-to-four years between making his last two features, things are coming around much quicker this time around.

Production on the new film is scheduled to begin this autumn, with casting now underway and producers making their rounds at Cannes to win potential investors for its planned fall 2017 release. The often-patient director is certainly not wasting any time here, and with hopes to finish the film around next spring, it's likely this one will end up screening during next year's festivities — especially with "Louder Than Bombs" and 'Oslo' making their premieres during their respective years.

And though Trier's fourth film will find the director getting out of his comfort zone in a number of different ways, some things will stay the same. Namely, Eskil Vogt helped co-write the new screenplay, Jakob Ihre will once again lens the film and editor Olivier Bugge Coutté will once again string it all together once the time comes.
