I watched a restored 35mm print of 'TGTGATU' tonight with about 100 folks in attendance, and I'd reckon about half of those had never seen the film.  Almost every zinger line got applause, every title card go applause, every death got applause.  IMDB ranks this film at a solid 9.0.  Here's my question, and I'm sure it's been written about to death, but since the search engine is dead, I'll ask anyway: how loved was this film when it was first released compared to now?
