I have over a hundred and fifty so most of these lists look pretty bare. It is also weird how most listed are very new movies with some lists only having a few to some older movies.

Why is it weird? Their lists have newer DVDs probably because it's easier to get new DVDs. A lot of older movies have just gotten DVD transfers, and they are harder to find.

that's silly. It just speaks for their tastes in movies. I know most people prefer movies made of recent than of old. I prefer of old more, but love movies today too. No problem in liking movies more of today, i just found it weird.

I'm at almost 200 now and i would say that over 90% are from 1990 - 2002.
I guess you stick to what you know i'm 23 now. I don't remember much before I was 10 - 12 I definitely wouldn't have been watching films any stronger than Starwars or cannon ball run taped off the TV and edited to death (Dam you BBC). I only buy older stuff if its been recommended or if I've caught it on the TV.

I think their lists are pretty comprehensive of the movies on DVD that are easily available. A DVD collection doesn't necessarily dictate a person's film literacy or tastes. It's much easier to walk into Best Buy and pick up Vanilla Sky or Gladiator rather than something like Chinatown.

I want life_boy's dvds- that's a pretty damn good collection.

The ending in The Proffessional and Leon are the same. It still ends with the explosion. However, Leon contains additional footage that gives more depth to Mathilda and Leon's relationship. It's very obvious that Mathilda loves Leon (and not in a little girl way). When it came to American censors, they thought it was too much and they cut it. There is nothing graphic or explicit about the additional footage, just the bug up the censors' collective asses. It does make it a better movie though because you get the full scope of the relationship.

I'm still waiting for Professional 2: Assassin in the Pink Dress.

Just for clarification: SAG members don't vote on the Oscars; Oscars are for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) while SAG is the Screen Actors Guild and is a union. In order to be an Academy member, one has to be at least nominated or voted in by three (?) other members. SAG members only vote on the SAG awards, but in order to get all the free screeners, etc., you have to be randomly selected in the SAG Nominating Committee and basically do the same with our awards nominations. But if you work on three union jobs or get a speaking part and pay the $1300 initiation fee, you too can be a member, MW.

HAH exactly! Although disregarding the fact that I just said I have 200 dvds I think you'll find that true especially with truck owners. The kind of truck owner that doesnt need to haul around material everyday but has it merely to make his fellow drivers feel they are lacking in some way similar to the truck driver.

Luckily, the local library has a lot of DVDs, including many Criterions and silent films, so I get to see alot of good movies for free.  I've tried to get a pretty diverse collection, and except for the Wes Anderson titles and a few of the Bruce Lee titles, I haven't  repeated any directors, though I should get the other 2 P.T. Anderson titles.

Its decent.  For those of you who don't know, DVD Discoveries is a DVD produced by DVD Angle that explains some of the aspects of DVD production, from the production of special features and menus to manufacturing.  There are segments with Sharpline Arts, Automat Pictures, David Prior & Charles deLauzrika (sp?) and others, explaining some of the thoughts behind producing supplemental content.  My favorite segments were the two with Van Ling.  Also interesting is the segment on how DVDs are pressed.

I wished the DVD would get into more of the details, but it is an interesting overview.  At $11.95 I'm not complaining.  Home Theater Forum has a thread on it with screenshots, and you can order it at http://www.dvddiscoveries.com.

listen markums, i think the thread title is pretty self-explanatory.  so i dont see how if you had no interest, you were mislead to click on it.  while it may seem like a dick contest of LOOK WHAT I GOT, i actually think its an interesting thread.  if you're on here enough talking to any of the regular posters like RK or Ghostboy or JB or whoever, sometimes you want to see what a persons tastes are outside of the movie being discussed.  and a movie collection says a lot about those tastes.  if i'm talking to someone who for example, hated freddy vs jason,  and look in their collecction and see all the nightmare and friday13th flicks, i am going to feel differently about their review, than someone who hated it, and has all foriegn arty flicks and no interest in horror at all.  so, putting up your dvds is just a way of laying it all out there for other people to see what you do or dont have in common.  but thats just my view of it.  look at it if you're intersted, skip it if you're not.

Goddamn MacGuffin, I thought I had a decent amount of Criterions (I think I'm up to 45 now). I hope you get those from dvdplanet (35% off). If you get the chance, can you recommend 10 or so that aren't on my list that are must haves? Thanks.

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?id=davidbrown

I have about 20 more not there, but the site's fucked right now. I have le trou (criterion) and it's not on dvdaficionado, anybody know if it's under a different name, the hole maybe? Peace.

Since you have Peeping Tom and other suspense movies, of course I'm gonna recommend any Hitchcock DVDs (Rebecca, Notorious, 39 Steps, Lady Vanishes, Spellbound). Then right behind is Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique, Wages Of Fear, Quai des Orfèvres). Also "M".

Other greats:
Passion Of Joan Of Arc
Red Shoes
Any Kurosawa titles

Thanks Mac. Wages of Fear and M are on my wish list right now. I know i need to get some of the kurosawa films, the box set and rashomon, don't know much about throne of blood, but i'm looking forward to lower depths(have you seen it?). I'm not a huge Hitchcock fan, but i'll end up getting that box set soon.

How good is 400 blows? fuckin great, huh? And how cute is Claude jade in stolen kisses? goddamn!

yeah but...While the on-screen director's credit goes to Tobe Hooper, there is a wealth of evidence to indicate that writer/producer Steven Spielberg was responsible for most of the creative decisions in the movie, with Hooper merely responsible for the mechanics of shooting scenes.

that's weird, i usually like the region 2 covers better.  maybe the grass is always greener or some shit.

Wow... I just scrolled through this thread again...  I'm fucking sick with jealousy.  I had around 200 but I sold them all last summer so I could intern for an agent in L.A.  It was definitely worth it, but goddamn was it painful.

How do you make subfolders in DVD aficionado?
Title: LIST ALL THE DVDs YOU OWN!

The best practice for larger collections demands that you create subfolders by using the "My DVDs / Folder Hierarchy" menu option or by clicking here: http://www.dvdaficionado.com/folders.html

I don't have a complete list of all my DVDs, but I was just looking at my collection and at the movies I've had for a long time that I'm embarassed to say I have.  Some were presents and others I bought because I use to like them, but then I grew up.

I think it would be interesting to hear someof you list the DVDs you own that you are embarassed to have.

Mine are:  Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Clerks, Austin Powers, Scary Movie, Kingpin, Analyze This, The Negotiator.

Some aren't necesarily bad, but definitley not "own" worthy, especially when I only own approximately 150 DVDs.

NO RUSHMORE!?

I did own that one time. Along with Royal Tennebaums. I gave both away.  Yes, you read correctly. No exchange of money, DVDS or sexual favors. Also, a few months ago, I gave away Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I felt like I was being a Criterion whore for not liking them but owning them. And when it comes to the idea of selling dvds i don't like, I hate asking people for money. I really don't need the money so I always give away the dvds. Recently, I gave away over 20 dvds of movies I didn't care for anymore. A few summers ago, I gave away over 50.

Here's a question i'm going to pose: What is everyone's policy on letting people borrow your dvds? i know a few of you guys have some rare stuff that you probably wouldn't just let anyone borrow. In my experience i only let people borrow one at a time...and if i don't get it back within at least a month or two i cut that person off from their borrowing privileges...i've had too many just "disappear"...what about everyone else?

I only trust one person to borrow more than one dvd at a time from me. His only problem is he sometimes leaves PS2 games in the cases instead. I've had to go through my entire collection to see how many were like that. That was pretty bad.

I let my girlfriend borrow my DVDs since she keeps them well and I see her all the time so when she's done with it I can take it back.  My other friends live rather far away, and I don't get to see them as much, so I rarely let them borrow stuff.  One of them lost my The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly SE

And Mac, I see that you put your copy of True Romance in with the Tarantinos instead of the Tony Scotts.  What's your determining factor(s) when making decisions like that?

Lasers - Criterions/Spec. Eds. on top. Peasant in the middle. Box sets on the lower. Criterion David Holzman's Diary is the one on the floor that you can see.

Whoops, that's a mistake. At first I didn't have the Scotts in that section, but I didn't want to put TR in action (?), keeping QT's work together; I did the same with Mamet's section being ones he's directed and/or written. Later I made room for Tony and Ridley and just forgot to move the DVD.

Why, ah... yes... yes, they are. "My bad", as the kids say.

Wow, that's pretty neat, then. I always wanted to break my movies into genres, but there was always a handful of titles that would fluster me.

I never had Ishtar on any format. As for VHS, the unmarked tapes are mostly movies taped from Turner Classic and AMC (the good era when Bob Dorian hosted). Though not many, released VHS are Entropy, Slender Thread, Morrissey and The Cure concerts and videos.

i've kinda been doing the same thing, and i find it very refreshing, like my collection is getting better after cutting some fat.  i've sold about 200 in the last few months.  i still have about 500 dvds and 160 blu rays, but i plan on selling everything but the best.  less is more.

man i don't want thousands of dvds weighing me down anymore, it's a storage issue.  also if you ever plan on moving you almost need a trip in the car exclusively for the flicks.  i wish the standard ten years ago had been set as those super thin cases they now use in boxsets.  lol they had the technology to make those then but they just made them bulky.   and every single box set produced now should be like the "Alias" sets; it's the size of a regular dvd case and holds 6 discs.  the entire season...  i get that people want something to look big because they're spending money on it, but that's just an illusion.  at least blu rays got this somewhat better.

I used to love buying DVDs, man what I fool I was. I've got easily 70% really random ass 5-15$ DVDs that totally drown my loved ones. I wish some thief would come in and take them all so I could get criterions instead.

Anyway as my tastes evolved during the years I have much more fun looking for rare downloads than rare overpriced DVDs.

Maybe you can preempt the thievery by, I don't know, selling your unwanted DVD's.

Or giving them away.

Or leaving your door unlocked and covering them with neon stickers.

I'm just brainstorming, you can work with these ideas.

I've given away over a hundred DVDs in my time. Sometimes my tastes will just out date the movie and I will give it to the first willing taker or I will still like it and find someone who absolutely loves it and realize my owning it feels a little too selfish.
