PJ Harvey is my favorite, too.

I also really like Nico.

But of the Pookie batch, I'll choose Joni Mitchell. If only for The Hissing of Summer Lawns.

I just recently heard my first Lucinda Williams song ("Right in Time") and was quite impressed.  Need to hear more. [/i]

So anyway, one of the songs from that 'Storie From The City...' album was also in 'Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back.'

But my favorites?

Bjork (no reasons needed), followed closely by Ms. Harvey and Ms. Apple. I used to love Portishead and Tori Amos a whole lot, but I don't listen to either very much anymore.

What about: Gloria Lynn, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holliday, Nina Simone? And Lauryn Hill? All great as well.

I love Ella Fitzgerald's "Cry me a river" "Blue Skies" and I believe it's Billy Holiday's "Lover comes back to me."  Nina Simone's "Lilac Wine" is also sublime.  Jeff Buckley did a pretty cool cover of it a while back.

I'm glad to know that Fiona is popular on this board.  There used to be/is an antipathy towards her from PTA fans, like she's a Yoko ono to lennon's pta...It's good to know that people appreciate her considerable artistic talent.  Her new album is going to come out sometime this fall and will most likely be fantastic.

The new Fiona album is scheduled for September 30th, and I really can't wait. That Jeff Buckley cover of Lilac Wine is great. And I bought Dido's album, but really couldn't stand it, although I tried. For a musical prodigy, I thought her songs were really badly written and arranged. But that's just me.

Agreed... I had heard some songs on the radio and swore that they must be poorly done radio edits, but that's the way her songs are.  They just aren't very good.

PJ Harvey is probably one of my favs.

Lucinda Williams can be good, but her drunk ass gets on my nerves and she seems very full of herself.  When I went to see Willie Nelson, she got pissed off that she wasn't headlining and couldn't take up all the time she wanted for her twenty-five minute extended cut of whatever fucking song that was... she just started cussing and people were about to have to pull her drunk ass off th stage.

Emylou Harris is much cooler.  I still haven't found an entire album by her that I like yet, but  some of her stuff is very unique and just plain cool.

Bjork rules... Portishead is awesome.

I love old Tori Amos... I saw her live so many times, I can't count back in the day.  Now she kind of bores me.   Though once in a while, she'll put out something kinda cool.

I'm sorta surprised no one's mentioned Patti Smith.  She's not one of my favorites, but she usually pops up in threads like this.  Same for Laurie Anderson.  Same for Liz Phair.  Courtney Love never gets mentioned, however.....

Does Kim Gordon qualify?  How 'bout Kim Deal?  How 'bout Tanya Donnelly?  How 'bout Kristin Hersh?  How 'bout Kate Bush?  How 'bout Chrissy Hynde?  OK, I'll stop.  But how 'bout them girls from Lush?

Anyways, my favorites:

2. Bjork
3. Kim Deal (if she qualifies...)
4. Joni Mitchell

I'm not a big fan of female singers for some reason.  Tori bores the hell out of me as well, and I've given her music a few tries...even went to a live show, but it really didn't interest me at all.  Ani is great live, minus the preachiness.  Bjork is good, but some of her music sounds the same to me.

Fiona and Jon have been busy lately....going to Abbey Road Studios to record the strings last month.  According to Jon's yahoo group, Fiona and Jon sang with Rickie Lee Jones last Saturday night at Largo....hope someone got a tape of that.

i used to like "cornflake girl" and the rest of the under the pink album.  then i heard "me and a gun" and never felt so thoroughly disgusted by a song's artlessness in my life.  witless, unmusical piece of shit it is, especially when compared with the eloquence of fiona's "sullen girl."  her covers of "happiness is a warm gun" and "smells like teen spirit" are just plain awful too.

I could go on for a while....

<--------- start with the pretty lady on the left here.

Tori Amos... fuck it, I like her.  "Scarlet's Walk" is great.

Sarah MacLachlan... it doesn't get better than "Fumbling Towards Ecstacy".  One of my top five albums of all time.

Fiona Apple... duh.

Liz Phair... She gets better and better as she goes.  I love the blunt honesty of her lyrics.

Lori Carson... Just watch "Waking the Dead" and listen for the song "Snow Come Down".  Sad, sad, sad.

Michelle Branch... What can I say?  Good pop music.  Plus, she's an attractive lass, which hurts not a bit.

Neko Case... Cool neo-country rock.  Amazing voice.

Allison Krauss... a little folky for my taste, but her talent is hard to ignore.

Suzanne Vega... great songwriting will get you everywhere.

Carrie Akre... She rocked back when she was singer for Goodness, and now as a solo artist she still kicks ass, though a bit more quietly.

Poe... when I want to go into a creative trance or have long, dreamy sex, I listen to either Poe or Portishead.  Take as needed.

For writing "He Hit Me... and It Felt Like a Kiss," Carole King deserves to be recognized as a onetime subversive force to rival the Velvet Underground.

Plus, she babysat Little Eva. That's at least as interesting as doing heroin and hanging out with Warhol.

here is my take

joni- is great

liz phair- i have to admit my judgement is cloady, since her earlly songs make me well want to have sex with her , she wrote " I'll fuck you and your girlfriend" how could i not get all sexed up, so i disqualify myself

bjork- could be great, but she is done in by overkill . i remember hearing her say that when she is sad she listens to off the wall by michael jackson, that is so cool. I would like to see her do a stevie wonder type album

nico- well maybe a muse, but credit goes to lou and later john cale

pj harvey- i like her, still i wish she didnt just stick to guitar drenched feedback and screaming, she could of done  great stuff in the " down by the water" mode

Diana ross- didnt write her songs, but ohh she could sing the fuck out of them

kim gordon over rated and dull

Madonna- ceased to be relavent post like a prayer

they have very great taste in music and they use songs from all over, how else would you explain the lemonheads in something about mary, and it wasnt there cover of miss's robinson which is been used to death by directers wanting a " grunge" feel to a classic rock song they grew up with

they however do not use soul music , and that is my fav music so they lose some points

how cool was pta for using the Ohio players in the hot tub scene

Since I started this topic, I should give my own little schpiel.

Fiona- I love how fucked up and complicated her music is...Everytime her lyrics seem to say something profoundly messed, her music mirrors that with something equally profoundly schizoid and syncopated.  She's an attractive lass too, (hehe Polkablues).

Joni Mitchell- I've only recently started delving into her huge body of work, but I'm pretty addicted to the Blue album.

Laura Nyro- Her unpredictable song structures get me and her status as an unknown who wrote all these famous songs that other people covered is kind of intriguing too.  Like "Wedding Bell Blues" "Eli's Coming" and "Stoney End" to name a few...

Aimee Mann- she's so cynical and dry, it can be really refreshing.  Her contribution to Magnolia was great, i would have never heard of her if it weren't for PTA using her.  And to backpedal. I would have never heard of PTA if it weren't for Fiona...  Introduced to one artist and get a plethora of other great ones too,...

Anyway, those are the top four right now:Fiona, Joni, Laura, and Aimee

I think she and Goffin and others (including, later and briefly, Lou Reed) literally sat in an office in the Brill Building in NYC in the early sixties and churned out songs which were then used by Phil Spector and others; Goffin and King wrote a lot of stuff the Crystals did. I think she wrote "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," too. I'm not a big fan of her singer-songwriter-era stuff, but her just-a-brilliant-songwriter stuff is a cornerstone of pop music.

This news should be for polkablues, but he doesn't come 'round no more:

Singers Imbruglia, Johns Wed in Australia

BRISBANE, Australia - Pop star Natalie Imbruglia married Daniel Johns, lead singer for Australian rock band Silverchair, in a secret ceremony.

The couple exchanged vows Wednesday at an exclusive resort on Australia's northeastern coast, with a large white tent seen on the lawns of the Thala Beach Lodge, Australian Associated Press reported.

Johns and Imbruglia, who announced their engagement earlier this year, flew into nearby Cairns airport Tuesday night and were driven away in a gold limousine.

Imbruglia, 28, wore a silk chiffon V-necked gown with a hand draped layered handkerchief hem, by Beverly Hills designer Monique Lhuillier, AAP reported. Johns, 24, wore a vintage pale blue suit.

The newlyweds will release a wedding photograph for sale, with proceeds going to a favored charity of the couple.

Imbruglia first rose to stardom in Australia as an actress on the television drama "Neighbors" which also spawned pop princesses Kylie Minogue and Holly Valance.

After leaving the show for a stake at a musical career, Imbruglia topped the charts with the 1998 single "Torn."

Chan from Cat Power is my favorite, hands down.  Alternately sensitive and harsh, beautiful, tragic, innocent, weary, retro, an old soul...  thats such a terrible description of how I feel about her music, but all I can say is it comforts me on a rainy day, and any other day for that matter... Bjork would be a very close second, as well as Fiona, Tori, the girl from portishead (don't know her name unfortunately)...

Last year I was dispatched to cover a festival held in Leicester. Backstage with a rather drunk friend who had to be poured into his hotel room that evening I was lucky enough to meet Chrissie Hynde and Joan Baez....until my friend staggered up to Chrissie and said 'oh, he's a tree hugger just like you' and then proceeded to thank Joan for the gig with the immortal line 'thanks Emmylou'.

I've been reluctant to write anything about movies... I do not consider myself knowledgeable enough to go up against the competition.   :-D   But I have figured out the search function, and I've gotta say, THANK GOD FOR YOU JONI MITCHELL FANS!  Whoever said that "Both Sides, Now" makes them want to cry, is genius.  She is an amazing lyricist... and perhaps an acquired taste, which only elevates her status.

I completely agree, Joni Mitchell is awesome. I just came across her music recently, and yes, she is really amazing.  I love her song "River" as well as "Both Sides Now" (which I heard on the Love Actually soundtrack, which lead to my interest in her music.)  I also like "Free Man in Paris." She definitely defines the female singer/songwriter.

Courtney Love Two Hours Late for Hearing

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Rock star Courtney Love showed up two hours late Tuesday for a hearing on drug charges and was scolded by the judge after talking out of turn in court.

Love's attorney Michael Rosenstein won a delay of the preliminary hearing after arguing that witnesses needed to be brought in from out of state and that he had not received drug samples for testing.

But the brief proceeding was marked by interjections from Love, who claimed to have prescriptions for the drugs and at another point seemed to fire and immediately rehire her lawyer.

"I have the pill bottles on me," she blurted.

At another point she said to her attorney, "You're fired."

"Miss Love, you're not doing yourself any favors," Superior Court Judge Elden Fox said.

"Rehired," Love said.

Love, former lead singer of the group Hole, is charged with illegal possession of the painkillers hydrocodone and oxycodone.

She was arrested in October after allegedly trying to break into the Los Angeles home of a former boyfriend. Police found the drugs later when paramedics were called to her house after Love suffered a drug overdose.

The judge rescheduled the preliminary hearing for April 15.

Prosecutor Jeff Stodel argued against a delay, saying, "We're ready to go."

GODDAMMIT, I really really really hate threads like this.  I'm not going to read the whole thing, but I sincerely hope my point has been made in one of the previous pages.  I hate when a band like Sleater-Kinney gets called a great female rock band instead of a great rock band.  I hate when PJ Harvey gets called a great pioneer of women's rock music instead of a great pioneer of rock music.  While I think it's nice to see a thread appreciating artists, threads like these come off to me like "gee, how neat it is to see actual WOMEN making music too!"  Funny how I don't see any threads named "Favorite female actors".

gonesavage, you don't think female singer songwriters write about different things?  you don't think that women have different view at this male-dominated society?  you don't think great songwriters with vaginas are able to express and offer perspectives different from that of a dude?  can't this post be a discussion on a particular subcategory of "singer-songwriters"?  Can't that subcategory be gender-based?

*ps: you are my favorite female poster.

Australia's Kylie Minogue has breast cancer

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Kylie Minogue, Australia's biggest music star, has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has canceled her upcoming Australian tour, her management said on Tuesday.

Minogue, 36, who was due to start her Australian concerts this week, said she was sorry to disappoint her fans.

"Nevertheless, hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon," Minogue said in a statement.

The Frontier Touring Company, the promoter of her Australian concert tour, said Minogue was diagnosed with "early breast cancer" whilst visiting family in Melbourne this week.

"She will undergo immediate treatment and consequently her Australian tour will not be able to proceed as planned," the company said in a statement.

Minogue has risen from humble beginnings as an actress on the television soap "Neighbors" to be a top pop singer. She is signed to music company EMI.

I don't know if we can help you here, the general consensus is Bjork sucks.

Seriously though, her voice isn't bad, it's just unconventional.  The music is breathtaking in some songs, and her voice almost comes in as an instrument itself... well, in Medulla, I guess that's the point.

Since you haven't heard much Bjork and want to get into her, I suggest you listen to Post.  Give that a few spins... if you begin to get used to her voice, try out Homogenic, and then Vespertine.  Medulla is a bigger pill to swallow once you're getting into her, in my opinion, but an all vocal, beatbox, etc. album, is just a concept worth looking into at all, in my opinion.

I know I'm no authority on Bjork, but if you try to listen to her voice and lyrics, you might get lost at how unusual she is.  Listen to the music for what it is.  It's mostly music you have to feel, and not just listen to directly.

Cvalda is such a great song off of Selmasongs...  If I listen to it whilst I drive, I swerve and... I suppose that's dangerous.

In order...

1. Human Behavior (Debut)
2. Army of Me (Post)
3. Alarm Call (Homogenic)
4. Hunter (Homogenic)
5. Scatterheart (Selmasongs)
6. Who Is It (Medulla)
7. Jóga (Homogenic)
8. Hidden Place (Vespertine)
9. Bachelorette (Homogenic)
10. Pagan Poetry (Vespertine)

These are some of her more grounded songs... Hopefully after these you'll get into songs like Immature, Undo, Where Is The Line, and some of the other Vespertine stuff, which can be quite flightly.

Set down whatever you're doing and listen to Nellie McKay (not to be confused with Bonnie McKay, who's good jailbait, but weak music).  This girl is the single most wildly talented, original songwriter to come up the pike in years.  If you're looking for a taste test, first hear "David", "Ding Dong", and "Inner Peace".  She's probably not for everyone (genre-hopping confuses the riff-raff), but the rest of us will be blown away.

Melissa Auf Der Maur's solo album is pretty cool, too.  Weird lyrics and not the strongest singing voice, but it's better than anything Hole or late-era Smashing Pumpkins ever did.

not favorite, but listen to the song "Skywriters".  it starts playing automatically when you go to the website.

http://www.nicoleatkins.com/

i saw her a few weeks ago after my cousins band played a show and she was AWESOME.  voice a little like fiona apple, in a breathy old-ish big band style, with some 60's girl group harmonies and a little country.  she's awesome.  i need to buy her cd, cause i've listened to the three songs on her website like 100 times now.
