Bumping this thread to report
Modest Mouse: Awesome... almost didn't get in, but did... and they were good.
I am the World Trade Center: Who the fuck told me these guys were good? This was the most ridiculously funny shit. They had a keyboard and a machine that goes **boodoodoodoodoo** when you put your hand over it. They were dancing around the stage like a fucking christian band... all smiley and playing un-miked tamborines.
Estradasphere: Fucking amazing group. Banjos, accordians, violins, heavy metal, jazz... shit... they were all over the place.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: Kind of cool, but unimpressive following Estradasphere.
Pedro The Lion: Really good. Great thing about this guy is that he really talks to the audience. They stopped after a few songs and said "so... any questions?"... when people would randomly yell shit out between songs, he would say "What?" and respond to what they said.
Against Me: These guys played some decent music, but there should be a rule that you can't be a band that's on a "Punks for voting" showcase and Anarchists at the same time.
David Cross: Yeah, he's not a band, but he did his stand up during the punk showcase. He was funny as always, but his act was cut short because Jello Biafra (who's not funny or interesting anymore) wouldn't shut up when "introducing" him and it ate into his alloted time.
Aesop Rock: This was fun, but he didn't play many of the songs I really like and he was a little too "put your hands in the air" for my tastes.
RJD2: He's a pretty cool DJ. He was spinning for Aesop and he did a solo set afterwards. It was pretty cool.
I saw a lot of other bands, but I can't remember all thier names.
Oh, I DID see the lead singer of Everclear at Spaghetti Warehouse.
Quote from: RegularKarateI saw a lot of other bands, but I can't remember all thier names.
so were the hives any good?
The Anglophile in me is super-chuffed to know that The Thrills and Franz Ferdinand were the "big draws" of SXSW. They are very promising, intriguing bands whose music has wit, grace, and style... all-too-rare qualities that it's nice to have in two up-and-coming bands simultaneously, even if the hype and bandwagon-hopping is getting annoying, esp. with Franz Ferdinand.
Everclear lead singer=royal asshole. He's easily Portland's most-hated "rock star." Like, you can spot the Sleater-Kinney girls at the grocery store and think it's kind of cool and they're super-casual and pretty damn down-to-earth, but NOT HIM. I've never heard anyone say he's acted like anything less than a supremo jerk-off. Which I guess would be okay if Everclear's music wasn't so infernally dull....
All my opinion, of course.
Quote from: godardianeven if the hype and bandwagon-hopping is getting annoying, esp. with Franz Ferdinand.
i totally agree and i fear that they will sell out and... that "take me out" will become the "smells like teen spirits" of this decade.
hmm, that's a bold statement!

I didn't see the Hives. I've never really been that big of a fan of thiers. Nothing against the music, just doesn't really do anything for me. Wish I would have gone though, evidently had a great after party.
As for the Everclear guy... he strikes me as a rockstar asshole, that's why I thought it was funny that he was at Spaghettie Warehouse.

you should have seen the hives dude. im not really a fan of them on cd...it's kinda monotonous...but live it was a completely different thing.
did you go to the polyphonic spree/how's your news?/broken social scene/snow patrol/metric/patrick park show at stubb's?
oh also, i was 4 feet from Isaac at modest mouse and had his spit fly all over me...my friend asked him how his drink tasted. i think where we were really made the mix that night terrible...way too loud, but they were reaching towards the back, so it's understandable.
Yeah, I was at the back, by the board. Sounded good there.
Were you the one throwing Suicide Girl stickers at him?
I didn't catch Polyphonic... I really wanted to see David Cross that same night and had to get up really early the next morning. I'm pissed though because I was wrong about the times and I really could have probably made it.

no dillinger escape plan RK?
No Dillenger EP... that's really my main complaint with SXSW is that there's too much going on at once. They should seperate the film portion and the music portion better.
i saw them at a day show (DEP). it was amazing, as expected.
i envy your locations

I live in South Austin (Ben White) and work downtown.
What do you do? You at UT?
I live right on the edge of Austin & Oak Hill. So- SW Austin. No UT, I finished college back in 1997. I graduated from St. Ed's University.
i'm not going to austin city limits, but for anybody who is going, you need to see Wilco. I saw them Friday at the Bonnaroo festival and they were amazing. They are playing lots of stuff from the new album, and the new stuff is amazing live.

Lollapalooza Canned!
Source: NME.com
LOLLAPALOOZA has been cancelled, just three weeks before it was due to kick off.
The 31-date, 16-city tour was pulled due to poor ticket sales, according to organisers.
Festival co-founder and Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell said: "My heart aches along with the bands and all of our employees, whose hard work developed one of the most exciting and important tours that this nation was to see."
This year's bill was set to feature Morrissey, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, and The String Cheese Incident.
Advance ticket sales were below estimates, except in New York, and promoters and organisers were facing losing several million dollars. The decision to cancel Lollapalooza made last night (June 21).
Marc Geiger, co-founder of the tour said: "I am in utter disbelief that a concert of this stature, with the most exciting line-up I've seen in years did not galvanise ticket sales. I'm surprised that given the great bands and the reduced ticket prices that we didn't have enough sales to sustain the tour. Concert promoters across the country are facing similar problems. Many summer tours are experiencing weak ticket sales."
So I'm pretty fucking pumped for Roskilde right about now. Leaving in just a few hours now, should be there sunday evening. I'll try to post updates on the most important gigs, when they kick off next thursday.
(Edit: Here ya go, RK, my deepest apologies)
Okie dokie, I'm going to this festival next week (along with RegularKarate and Pedro), and I need some help sorting through the bands... I'm extremely excited, but a lot of the bands I've never heard of, and many are playing at the same time.
I'm definitely seeing Pixies, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello, Cat Power, The Killers, Ryan Adams, Dashboard Confessional, Spoon, Wilco, The Roots, and Modest Mouse. The other time slots are totally up for grabs, and I need some direction on who to see.
So here goes:
Should I see Gomez or Franz Ferdinand? (I know both of them, I just can't decide which I want to see more)
Louque or Tea Leaf Green?
Bob Schneider or the Slip?
Neko Case or Sloan?
Broken Social Scene or Particle?
Howie Day or The Gourds?
My Morning Jacket or Los Amigos Invisibles?
Neville Brothers or the Wailers?
Ben Kweller or North Miss. All Stars?
Cake or Medeski Martin and Wood?
definitely see franz ferdinand.
these are the ones i know.

Neville Brothers or the Wailers? <- Neither, you're getting a good spot for the Pixies (just keep your place from the Dashboard show, it's the same stage)
Ben Kweller or North Miss. All Stars? < Neither, you've got less than an hour to get from The Roots to a good spot for Elvis Costello

.if anything you must see medeski martin and wood......they get lumped into that jam band scene w/ phush, string cheese, moe ..etc.....but their sh*t is wicked stuff....and they just put out a new album thats their best yet...they are more greyboy allstars than typical hippy stuff.....but yet they are more experimental jazzy stuff...not so mainstream sounding [i.e. galactic]....
plus they look cool:

i found this by typing
music festivals into the search field. then clicked "
search for all terms".
the first thing i mention in the Nefarious Search guide is to ALWAYS click "search for all terms". if u do that, u will find what ur looking for, ALWAYS. i hav now stickied the "how to search" topic. we WILL make it through this!
i went back and checked what i wrote in the search field. there was a typo. that's why it didn't come up.
making the search thread sticky was a nice touch. i really do appreciate your help at this difficult time.
this does look like a killer festival, eh? i'd make the trip if i could afford it.
