Title: Mine very own band
Post by: polkablues on August 16, 2005, 10:31:13 PM
Inspired by the young JimmyGator, I whipped up some of my band's demos onto a Myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/greenmyeyesmusic

The recordings are a little lo-fi, and we could use a drummer, but I'm proud of it nonetheless.  Let me know what you guys think.

My Phantom Limb is pretty amazing. (Make more like that.) I'm impressed.  :yabbse-grin:

Is there a way we can download that? Xixax will host it if necessary.

If I can contribute some constructive criticism... Some of the vocals are flawless, some are shaky and/or confusing. I would cut the distorted guitar out of the later part. I don't think it works without drums.

YES I LIKE THIS.

Thanks, guys!  This is actually the first time we've put our music up in a public forum of any kind, so it's reassuring to get a good response to it.  We plan to hit a few open-mic nights in the near future, and then hopefully move up from there.

I appreciate the critique, JB... I agree with you on every point, actually.  I went back in and mixed a new version of "Phantom Limb" without the distorted guitar in the bridge, and it does sound a bit better, a bit more organic.  But once we lay a full band arrangement on there, it's definitely going back in.

Nothing would make me happier.  But yeah, Xixax would need to host it, as I don't have any way of doing it myself at the moment (Matt, my bandmate, is getting a website going for us, but it's not quite all the way out of the birthing canal yet).  PM me and let me know what's the best way to get that to you.

This stuff is really, really good.  You did a great job.  But you can make it downloadable on myspace if you want to.  You just have to go into the settings of the songs and click the downloadable button.

Just added another song to the Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/greenmyeyesmusic): "Tooth and Nail".  That was me singing lead on the other three songs; this one features the multi-talented Matt Amberg front and center.  But that's me unleashing my inner blues-guitarist all over the song.

Just rotated in a new song (http://www.myspace.com/greenmyeyesmusic).  This is one of my favorites that I've written, but I never made a recording of it that I was happy with until now.

Listening to Phantom Limb right now.  Wow... impressed.  This song would definitely contribute to my bouts of hermitism.   :-D

Mild criticism... vocals need tightening at about 4 minutes in.

That's my goal... I want to make music that people play on "repeat" for hours at a time after they've been dumped.  But catchy, too.   :yabbse-wink:

Nothing new to add here...

Just wanted to see the odometer roll over on my post count, and I figured I'd use the opportunity to shamelessly bump my thread.

<humming to himself>

Oh, I'm sorry.  Are you still here?

<awkward pause>

I'll hang up now.

So I finally got around to playing music in public, for people... I played for about an hour last night at this Christian coffee-shop (I was very "don't ask, don't tell" about my radical agnosticism).  It was initially going to be me and my bandmate playing, but he had a family emergency at the last minute, leaving me to face the mass of sixteen-year-old Christian girls, the guys trying to get into their pants, and the middle-aged, balding, don't-look-like-they're-supposed-to-be-within-200-feet-of-the-sixteen-year-old-girls guys all by myself.

All in all, it went great.  I got free coffee, the place was packed to the gills with people, everybody seemed to be having a good time, I sounded far more assured than I felt... I'm now the proud owner of a pack of chaste, underage groupies.  Go, me!

A buddy of mine recorded the whole thing on his laptop and cut out some mp3s, so I figured I'd share a few, let everyone here bask in my reflected glory for a few minutes.

You can download the songs here (http://uploadhut.com/view.php/397850.zip).  (You have to click on the link, then download from the page that'll come up.  You can't just "save target as".)   EDIT: Scroll down a couple of posts for better links.

There's three songs in there; a cover of Ryan Adams' "Sweet Illusions", where I totally fuck up the bridge, a cover of Damien Rice's "Cannonball", which sounds great, if I have to say so myself, and an original called "Allison, You Never Really Know".

There was a girl there taking pictures with her digital camera; if she gets around to emailing them to me, I might post a couple of those on here.

Moral of the story, I'm now one step closer to the ultimate goal: actually being paid to do this shit.  Would that be the greatest scam in the world, or what?

Sorry to jump on this late, but I don't understand this myspace garbage. How do I listen to the songs uploaded previous to these four songs currently on? I'm not so much into acoustic vocal-guitarist acts, but I dig your voice.

Sadly, you can't.  Myspace lets you stream four songs at a time on your page, but any time you add a new one it replaces one of the old ones.  I'm overdue for a rotation, though, so when I have some spare time I'll try and put some older songs back up for a while.  Thanks for listening to them!

i have this recurrent joke/serious project with a friend of mine about a country band called 'the saddest man in san antonio' . we haven't got our asses to work on it but one day i wrote part of a melancholic song called 'same old fool'.

i want you to use the part i wrote and do something with it and your beautiful voice.

here it is:

gleamin' thru the alleys of redemption and hope
i found myself talking out loud to a picture of god
time had scratched it badly,
same  story with my soul
bartender came to me
said  can i help you, bud
didn't recognize me
hell i was still
the same old fool

same old fool (x100000000)

Oh, women shouldn't be allowed to talk
We should seal their lips with strong adhesive caulk
And if they try to write things down
We should drag them outta town
And anesthetize their legs so they can't walk.. baba-dah-boo

and one for when you tour south:

Oh, women should be pregnant every day
From their early teens until they're old and grey
And when they're tired of labour pain
We should wrap 'em up in chains
And dump 'em into San Francisco bay.. sizzle-zee-zue

So I did, in fact, write a song for this.  I'll try and record it and post it for you in the next couple of days.  It turned out not being very country at all, but it's wicked melancholy, and that's what really matters.  Here's the full lyrics, for your perusing pleasure:

Gleaming through the alleys of redemption and hope
I was talking out loud
To a picture of god
Time had scratched it badly
Same story with my soul
Bartender came to me
Said can I help you, bud
He didn't recognize me
Hell, I was still
The same old fool (x4)

Sifting through the ashes of my evergreen heart
It was you that I lost
It was you that was gone
Well, time is not on your side
Time won't let you down so easy
I couldn't apologize enough
Hell, I was still
I was still
The same old fool (x4)

And all these days we leave behind
Like cheap hotels with vacant signs
And holidays we never named
For wild hearts that can't be tamed
In cantinas, with canned applause
Sitting with the ghosts of all
The famous drunks who came before
All silhouetted at the door
Your eyes betrayed your age, you said
I'm positive we never met
Before this day, and never since
But I knew you by your fingerprints
On the rim of the glass you drank from
And all the hands of the men you knew then
And if I'm still the same old fool
Will you go and leave me blue
Will you leave me blue
If I can't be with you
