Title: I lost ALL my music. - Vista did it. (help)
Post by: Stefen on July 02, 2007, 11:12:11 PM
I lost ALL my music over the weekend. I installed Vista and it thrashed my PC and I had to do a clean reinstall after it corrupted all my external hard drives.

I'm talking over 10 years worth of mp3's I had saved. These things MONEY can't buy. Hard to find stuff I'll never find again. I'm trying to pretend like it didn't happen.

I've downloaded the essentials like the Wilco, Sonic Youth, Van Morrison, Radiohead, Black Keys, Jeff Buckley discographys, as well as some current and all time favorite albums like Fionas Tidal, Animal Collectives Feels, and some prime David Garza stuff pete hooked me up with.

Otherwise, I got nothing. About 10 seconds pass and I remember an album I liked that I make a mental note to look for. I've got literally around a million mental notes right now. I'm on edge.

If anyone knows any good blogs, or open directories that have "classic" (meaning all time great) albums) on it, please send it my way.

i split this thread because it might be good to have some helpful (maybe even life-saving) links for when this inevitably happens to someone else. the solution of course is to back everything up, something i recently started doing.

there's this thread about downloading songs (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=3412.0) but it's not very useful.

distant cousin: I just sold all my dvds (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=7533.0)

Thanks P.

Yeah, the Vista install, I was fine with, cause I had all my IMPORTANT stuff backed up on 2 500 gig external hd's. But I get Vista installed and right away it says it can't recognize the external devices even while I'm looking at the folder of their contents and it's all there.

THEN BAM. Everything deleted.

It happened just like that.

The worst part is just how much music I had. I mean, I had close to 900 gigs of music. And it's not like pack rat stuff, where I just keep everything, I mean, it was ALOT of music I listened to all the time. I mean, hard to find stuff that I anyone mentioned it, I could upload it (and I have on this site) and have it ready in a few minutes.

I mean, SERIOUSLY.

Alot of the really, really good stuff (Radiohead, Pink Floyd, shit that sounds good on headphones) I had in FLAC/complete lossless audio, which is tough to get cause you can only get at invite torrent sites where you need to keep a ratio, and these files are BIG.

I lost alot of other shit too, like pictures from highschool, saved e-mails and other things from high school friends who aernt even alive, hard to find scripts, just tons of shit I'd been collecting over the last 10 + years I've been on the net.

It's like losing your memory, but you CAN remember the memories you USED to have, but can't remember any of them.

I spent 10 years downloading music that I could write to, then 10 years later I'm finally ready to write a word and lose all that music.

This movies something like 50 years in the making. I don't do math, I write.

I've been going to Regynouth since Mod showed it to me a couple years ago, but what's the deal with the site now? Whenever I bring it up, my virus scan/anti spyware goes nuts quarantining crap, and then regynouth will just direct me to some spyblocker website. Is this just me or is it happening to anyone else?

no, it happens to me too.  it sucks so i've really slowed down visiting.  but you just hit SKIP TO SITE and can get there ok.  i think the guy who runs it actually got robbed right after he cashed a paycheck and then didn't have money to keep the site up because he didn't collect enough donations.  so, that sucks.

I know the one you can just click skip ad at the top, that one doesn't bother me very much, and I shouldn't complain because beggars can't be choosers, but there is another one that says something like would you like to install spydoctor? And when you click no it takes you to the spy doctor webpage and tries to install anyways. The worst part is the fact that it makes your browser full screen and I hate that.

Like I said, beggars can't be choosers so I shouldn't complain.

This is a great thread. I've found so much of my music because of it. I'd like to thank everyone for helping me out including the admins who stickied it.

I SO wanna try installing vista again because it looked so crisp and clean but it didn't work for shit. Maybe when the new service pack is released it will work better.

Don't misconstrue what I'm about to say as support for Vista, but I got a new laptop with Vista on it, and I'm yet to really have my music raped by it.  I think it's probably because I selected that I didn't want to install Windows Defender, but I don't know.  You should be fine.

I think it's probably better to have Vista pre-installed on a new computer instead of upgrading from Windows XP.

I really should just leave it alone, but I really like the way Vista looks. Maybe I'll wait a few more months.

Demonoid has been taken down by the RIAA and the MPAA.

With torrentspy and isohunt now blocking American users, our choices for pirated crap is getting slim. I hope we don't have to start paying or shit again.

is there another Vista (doesn't let customers use their own PC's the way they want to) Thread?

Microsoft warns on Vista update

Microsoft is warning Windows Vista users that a forthcoming service pack for the operating system may stop some third-party programs working.

The software giant has released a list of programs that may be broken by the SP1 update for Vista.

Most of the software hit by the upgrade are security programs that prevent Windows users falling prey to viruses, trojans and booby-trapped webpages.

The Windows Vista update will be released to the public in mid-March.

Update loop

Service Packs are among the biggest updates Microsoft issues for its various operating systems. The software firm said SP1 makes Vista more secure and reliable and introduces some new features.

The list of programs affected by SP1 is divided into three. Some will be blocked by the update, some will not run and others will lose some of their functions.

PROGRAMS HIT BY SP1
BitDefender AV
Fujitsu Shock Sensor
Jiangmin KV Antivirus 10
Jiangmin KV Antivirus 2008
Trend Micro Internet Security
Zone Alarm Security Suite
Iron Speed Designer
Xheo Licensing
Free Allegiance
NYT Reader
Rising Personal Firewall
Novell ZCM Agent
Of the 12 programs mentioned, six block viruses or keep an eye on the places someone visits online.
Microsoft warned that its list was not "comprehensive" and asked people to get in touch with the maker of any affected software to fix problems.

Although the update will become widely available in March, Microsoft is releasing it to business customers in February.

Microsoft has also been forced to withdraw an update to Vista that was required before Service Pack 1 could be applied.

Writing on the Windows Vista blog, Nick White, Microsoft product manager, said the company had withdrawn the preparatory update while it investigated.

Isolated reports suggest that some machines on which the preliminary update has been applied go into an update loop.

He wrote: "We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue."

This isn't so much about Vista, as it is about losing all my music to my external hard drive, but does anyone know of a cheap alternative for having data recovered from a faulty hard drive?

The prices are looking steep, and I'm not sure what exactly instigated the trauma.  I haven't dropped it or anything, it's just ceasing to be recognized by the computer and the light that it has is blinking now instead of staying steady, like normal.

Well, my external harddrive died today. It's working, I just can't get my computer to recognize it. I plug it in and nothing comes up and nothing is shown in device manager or my computer.

Fuck it.

I'm just going to start buying CD's again. What's a good place to purchase cd's online? Preferably something indie or not too corporate and not too expensive.

I'm open to suggestions.
