that trailer is dope. i was really disapointed by all that 'this is a film by a mad genius' shit. im starting to look at trier as some sort of fabricated image. it made me wanna watch it though.

You are rite! The trailer is dope!
That's pretty damn cool...I hope this comes to my town. I've always wanted to see a Von Trier film, I got DandcerITHD on tape somewhere.
This and The Brown Bunny are the only interesting films at Cannes this year
There are TONS of interesting films at Cannes this year, actually...those those are just two of the few that are in English with American actors.
I thought I had already started a thread on this...but then realized I just mentioned it on the Von Trier thread. I think the trailer is awesome, but if you're a Von Trier hater, this won't make you like him anymore. He offers a nice dose of his ego in the trailer.
i guess the trailer is "interesing". however its not very intriguing -- doesnt leave me dying to see the film. id like to get some idea of what the story is -- unless thats just a teaser -- in that case, it would be an apt tease.
is there a brown bunny trailer out there? -- im really looking forward to this... vincent gallo is a cocky bastard -- nevertheless i enjoyed buffalo 66. when press was going around at the festivals for buffalo 66, i heard that interview with gallo: saying that buffalo 66 was the most important film since citizen kane -- this made me want to hate the film so much -- however i enjoyed. that statement could have just been a concious attempt to stir up a media frenzy... who the fuck knows, who the fuck really cares. anyway im looking forward to brown bunny.

Which other ones caught your eye man? Just wondering...I've been hoping I overlooked some of the cool films at Cannes this year, there has to be more than 2...I mean, it's Cannes for christ's sake!
But I shouldn't complain, The Brown Bunny is enough on its own. I fucking love Buffalo 66, Vincent Gallo is great. I'd love to see a trailer for it if anybody can find one, I'll second cowboy kurtis' request.
Quote from: ebeaman69Which other ones caught your eye?
if i was there i'd definitely wanna see these:
A CINQ HEURES DE L'APRÈS-MIDI (At Five in the Afternoon) by Samira Makhmalbaf, daughter of Moshen Makhmalbaf.. interesting iranian filmmaker.
CARANDIRU by Hector Babenco, i think his first film in 7 years, about a rebellion in the largest prison in south america.. and anyone who's seen Pixote('81) knows this dude is sumthin else.
CE JOUR-LÀ by Raoul Ruiz, probably won't be as good as Three Lives and One Death, but i'll still check it out eventually.
DOGVILLE by Lars von Trier, well duh.
ELEPHANT by Gus van Sant, good title, don't know shit else about it tho.
PÈRE ET FILS (Father and Son) by Alexandre Sokurov.. russian ark, now a father/son movie. could be good.
THE TULSE LUPER SUITCASES, PART I. THE MOAB STORY by Peter Greenaway. i havn't liked anything greenaway has done since The Pillow Book, but he's about due for a comeback. also he always shows plenty of nipple.
SWIMMING POOL by François Ozon, he's the best thing that not enuff ppl talk about. the trailer (http://www.francois-ozon.com/anglais/ozon.audiovideo14.html) is hot. and with him using ludivine sagnier again this is easily my most anticipated of the bunch.

yes please.
so u see ebeaman, there's plenty of potentially good shit at cannes this year.

consider me teased
Wow. Hadn't seen that picture. Ludivine Sagnier certainly has....matured...since 'Eight Women.'
Anyway, anything by Ozon and Greenway are always must-sees. Greenaway has been talking about that Tulse Luper Suitcase series for years, it's great to finally see it come to fruition.
I don't know anything about Elephant, but Van Sant redeemed himself (from Finding Forrester and to an extent Good Will Hunting) with Gerry, so I'm down for that.

I actually wasnt very impressed by this trailer, maybe because I wanted more actual movie or maybe because you guys all hyped the trailer up so much.
Either way its still your guy's fault
Weird seeing Phillip Baker Hall in a non-PTA ensemble.
For some reason, I really want to see DogVille while chowing down a cheeseburger.

Release Date: TBA 2003/2004
Release Date Note: There is a very strong chance that this film will most likely going direct-to-video, since it was produced for HBO. That prestige channel does, however, have a recent history of having a few of their movies picked up for theatrical release, like Real Women Have Curves, so there is still a chance (especially if it's a big hit at Cannes). MK2 has already picked this movie up for a theatrical release in France, for example.
Cast: Eric Deulen (Eric), Alex Frost (Alex), John Robinson (John), Timothy Bottoms (Mr. McFarland), Elias McConnell (Eli), Matt Malloy (Mr. Luce). With the exception of Timothy Bottoms and Matt Malloy (In the Company of Men), most of this movie's cast is made up of young unknowns from the Portland, Oregon area who have no prior film experience.
Premise: This is the story of a group of teenage boys on an ordinary day, attending high school in Portland, Oregon until something extremely violent happens (think "Columbine") and it *might* also be connnected somehow to homophobia (which might make the movie closer to the Matthew Shephard story than Columbine). (Bottoms plays a teacher; Malloy plays a father.) The bulk of this movie's dialogue was improvised, as there was no complete script.
WOW! that's a great cast.

See
The Talented Mr. Ripley again. Unless seeing Phil Hoffman in a non-PTA enemble is just
way too much for you.

This movie is going to be great.
Von Trier's Dogville Heads to Lions Gate
Source: Variety
Lions Gate Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Lars von Trier's Dogville, starring Nicole Kidman. The studio beat rival bids from Paramount Classics, United Artists, Miramax and Artisan.
The film is the first Cannes competition entry nabbed for U.S. distribution during the festival. Australian drama Japanese Story sold Wednesday to Samuel Goldwyn Films for North America. Lions Gate and other bidders are also believed to be involved in negotiations for British film Young Adam.
The film also stars Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Chloe Sevigny, Patricia Clarkson, Ben Gazzara, Philip Baker Hall, Stellan Skarsgard, Jeremy Davies, Harriet Anderson, Blair Brown and James Caan.
Unfolding on a bare soundstage with minimal props and scenery and told in nine chapters and a prologue, the story centers on a beautiful fugitive, played by Kidman, who seeks shelter in an isolated Rocky Mountains town-ship during the Depression. The demands of the locals in exchange for harboring her gradually spiral out of control, with devastating results.
i fanally saw dogville tonight and i'm still sinking it. i'm not done thinking yet but i have to say that the set and the structure and all worked brilliant.
i have a feeling that this, after multiple viewings, could turn out as my favourite trier film so EVERYONE should see this. man.
Not excited about any films from Cannes? Well, there's always Mystic River (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0327056). Clint Eastwood. Tim Robbins! Roger Ebert raved about this film -- well, raved compared to the other films there -- so count me excited about this one. :)
EDIT: Also starring: Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, Laura Linney and more...
Yes, but -- it's Von Trier!
I finally saw the trailer for Swimming Pool the other night. It looks fun. Good, smokingly sexy jailbait fun.

Ummm... P posted it on page one a while back. The picture must have distracted you.
I never got around to downloading the trailer...it wasn't because of the picture, although it DID distract me, as I'm sure it did everyone else who happened upon it...
No Dogville Follow-Up for Nicole Kidman
Source: Variety
Nicole Kidman has dropped out of Lars von Trier's Manderlay, the second movie in the planned "U.S.A." trilogy that kicked off with this year's Cannes entry Dogville.
Her exit was caused by a scheduling conflict. The second film is on a tight timetable to finish shooting by July 2004, but Kidman is not available until the following fall.
The role of Grace in the "U.S.A" trilogy will now be played by three different actresses across the three movies.
Manderlay, which will reportedly deal with slavery in the American South, is expected to use the same challenging production techniques as the first film. The third picture in the trilogy will be titled Wasington.
yeah, hell yeah.
LvT is gonna stick it to the man so good.
Well, there were three different actresses in his last trilogy, but goddam, this is the same role.
What will she do instead of this?
when we realize the man is already stuck...the sticking it to him becomes an exercise in redundancy...we are all slaves to something...it is unfortunate the injustices most detailed and abhored are those we think we see and not the ones we know we feel...i am the man and the man is we...they were the men who allowed me the be...i have allowed myself to become enslaved because freedom from my captor meant having to know myself...i own you because you want me to...you serve me because youre scared of you...
take away...take away...
take away these balls and chains
:?:
acting confused is a convenient way to avoid ever having to ponder a complex, serious, and or abstract thought...
its also a great way to pick up stoopid chicks...

Hey overseas folks who are lucky enough to have seen Dogville already...is the DVD out yet or coming soon? No sense in waiting for the American release when a region free DVD player can speed up the process!
Dunno about the dvd, but I did see the movie-- and it rocks. If you're a Von Trier fanatic like me, prepare to blown away. It wasn't what I expecting or imagined-- and actually very visual considering the starkness of the set/production design. A great film and this is the stuff Kidman should be winning Oscars for.
I think it will only show here next month.
Thanks very much for that 2nd act, I'm quite the von Trier fanatic myself. I regret that I never saw epidemic nor medea, I can't find these anywhere.
dogville was amazing and i can't wait for the dvd but it's still showing in a couple of cinemas here. my guess is that it'll be out on reg2 in a couple of months.
what the fuck is medea and these?
medea is this project he did for danish tv -like the kingdom, only different http://imdb.com/title/tt0095607/
epidemic is the second part of his first trilogy (The Europa trilogy), I want to see this so fucking much!

oh i misread you i thought you meant 'these' a movie of some sort, silly me...
i've never heard of that medea thing but i've seen epidemic. i was pretty drunk and it was at a party so i didn't get it at all. i tell you, it was fucking weird. the first half was in english with english actors and all but suddenly the narratives switched completely and it was all in danish with danish actors and with von trier playing the lead himself. definitly not a movie to watch while you're drunk.

I say the same thing about
It's all about love
I saw this movie over the summer in Europe. It was really good.
