So, what are the best books on novel writing out there ? I considered Five First Pages and Self-Editing ... I believe they are considered good (at least Amazon says so) but the guys at Xixax know better

On Becoming A Novelist by John Gardner.

That Stephen King book on writing ain't too shabby either.

And Norman Mailer had one that he published a year or so ago that was pretty good, I think, but I never got around to finishing it.

Stephen King's On Writing is great. Unpretentious.

King mentions one book about writing several times...

Read The Spooky Art: Some Thoughts On Writing by Norman Mailer.

I haven't read the whole book just bits and pieces. I read a little whenever I visit the bookstore.

Right now, I have no money...

I read most of that one, too. It's got some great stuff in it, although Mailer gets a little repetitive and self congratulatory at times. That one bit about the boy who's in love that's printed on the back cover though...that's hilariously spot on.

amazon's huge back cover picture is (intetionally?) blurred. this world is bullshit!
