macguffin, your avatar will be rated on the basis of identifiable reference, composition, humour, appeal, or whatever the purpose of the avatar seems to be.  ratings will differ depending on the individual

an image from a tv show or movie i've heard you talk about but have never seen myself.  keep in mind that i have actually tried to work on this avatar myself but alas i could not isolate the transparency of the bee.

i feel watched and isolated from the groups in the background.  the wood dude in the front makes me feel uncertain.  the green bee is reassuring.

white outline of the bee is distracting but this really can't be helped.  rocks impossibly balanced in the background add to excellent replay value.  muchos detalle and takes us almost all the way around the colour spectrum

a first time viewer would be unable to place context with the flipped typewriter.  raoul's expression of masked fear and attempt at the casual are humorous but colour would make it more interesting, especially that red typewriter....like an alarmmmm of confusion

believe it or don't, at first i hated this sucker after a few days of staring at it.  this was a long time ago.  i couldn't stand the fucking picture...it just kept smiling and smiling at me.  and it isn't even a full blown smile, it's this soft teethy wimpy expression i hesitate to call a grin.

but over time the 'tar has matured upon me and i have learned to appreciate it.  love it for everything that it is.  this is the buddy holly and although i have a few issues with the quality of the print and how it's been uncropped it reminds me of everything taz and everything xixax...i give it a blatant thumbs up (https://xixax.com/images/smiles/yabbse_thumbup.gif)

i have spent a lot of time with ms. mully dee...she is exquisite however i don't think 'a maniacal thrill!!!11' is helping you out a lot unless the movie was one of those underwater family-themed rollercoasters with a slight edge and i just wasn't paying attention

the elements; head, headlights and sign work as a threesome and the design wouldn't work if one of them wasn't present...if you still want to go for the mysterioso effect then pull out your dvd and look at the back of the insert...vague headlights and the sign by itself looks tempting and partially unsafe

originality is blehh because you've just pulled a dvd cover out of your hat.  nothing fantastic other than the fantastic movie and some of the original posters were better but a good effort

four rows of varying sizes make for a nonexistent focal point.  but that's okay because these avatars are just shoved to the side of the screen anyway.  he may not be aware, but p's avatar takes full advantage of this format by placing his subjects to the right of his frame making the eye glide down the page past his picture through the message and clean out the other side with nary a scratch

so back to you...the only way i could see this taking an hour is if you went and got each movie and capped each scene individually...each of the pictures you chose are perfectly composed and would make flawless avatars by themselves but slipped together like this they begin to lose their magic...

this image is resampled so poorly that it loses almost everything it had going for it in the beginning.  you can even see the tiny compression blocks

shows the poster as an enthusiastic cartoonish character...good cropping of the original image but the transparency isn't great...you have a purple border around the left side and transparency mosquito noise around the right side...my prescription for you is something resembling this

as i am familiar with conception and subjects of the avatar it loses that much mystery...the bluriness of ed's face and her coat makes her appear to have a beard or something, looks off to me but again it's because i know it

i have always found crowbars to be the most suggestive object even if it's just lying there.  even if you come in a room and all there is in the room is this crowbar.  make it animated and you'll have a classic

kinda looks like this guy is holding a dog on his shoulder and the dog is biting his shoulder and he's screaming.  that's what i always think when i see it

you have the top and bottom of the film frame lying around which gives it character but makes it a bit messy....it's such a classic but i am divided and a fish divided against itself will swim straight forward

believe it or don't, i've spent a lot of time in the shot you see there (it's mighty hard to get up on the train tracks in the background) and like half the x-files locations you see on the early seasons...you can actually smell the sewage treatment plant from where he's crouching

wide angle makes adds to the freaky-deakyness but it's much more effective when you see just how vigorously our jigsaw friend is devouring this fish in motion....nonetheless a superb refence but very dark...would like to see jigsaw in more detail

hey kids, it's bresson with wavywavy hair

surrounded by mostly vertical lines and framed by two horizontal ones....i see your game but it all seems slightly off kilter and he gives the impression he's looking at something he vaguely approves of a short distance away..certainly nowhere near the boards though and this gives you a strange floaty feel if it weren't for that blurry black bar that weights everything down...now it just makes me feel trapped

black and white is appropriate and if you managed to make this animation yourself then kudosssss, but it does get irritating after a different period of time

this avatar could turn into a golden one as long as you follow the golden rule: keep it long enough it will be tolerated and loved.  it will imprint itself as an icon of the boards and you will never associate the image with anything else again

somebody asked why avatars are so important....perhaps they aren't but they influence the reading of your post tenfold

a good example is banky's series of avatars a while back...conversely they can make a slightly annoying person seem like a full flegged urkel

so in conclusion avatars subconsciously change what people think of you

i don't know how make the image sharp or like its "supposed" to look like..
all i did was go to "paint" and mess around with the "stretch/skew" until the image was 250 w 250 L.........i'm sorta computer illiterate. :( .......

Family Guy is mostly random humor like The Critic often had, but The Critic had better character and plots.  It also had the constant parodies and tributes to movies to tie it together, while FG's core, if we can call it that, was the random and outrageous humor which sometimes fell flat.  Both are good shows but The Critic had more to set it apart from The Simpsons than FG did.

There is so much agreeance coming from my end here, it's bordering on love.

Opinions, schmopinions.  I've watched The Simpsons on and off for several years.  Never enough to become a freak about it or anything, but enough to appreciate it.  But Family Guy is so much more than a cartoon with characters to hang sight gags off of.  It's got your social commentary, too.  And now that it's got a chance to come back later on this year, it is going to be better than ever.  Remember, you're comparing a show which only had three seasons to one that's had, what is it now, fifteen?  But The Critic is the unsung hero here.  Though it didn't concentrate on social commentary (really wasn't meant to as its targets were mostly film and celebrity related).  It was also way too controversial a show for its time, something that ABC really had a hard time dealing with, especially for a show that was a lead-in for Home Improvement.  It paved the way for shows like Family Guy ESPECIALLY.  It was way ahead of its time as far as sight gags and running gags and the like were concerned.  But also, as Ravi said, all of this tied into the plot, even though there were times you'd forget how or why you got from one place to the next.  Still, that randomness is part of the charm of the show.  Not to mention the great musical numbers, something which Family Guy has also learned a thing or two from with some great numbers of its own.

For me, The Critic > Family Guy > Futurama ... but all of them have their moments.  As for people (me) loving Family Guy because I didn't catch The Simpsons in its prime, I'd have to say "nah."  I'll give The Simpsons its prime.  It's definintely due that because of how consistently funny it's been.  It's probably like the Flintstones of our time.  But it's because I saw flashes of the brilliance of The Critic that I wanted to relive again.  No 15-17-year-old could convince me of that, 'cause they were probably 10-12 when The Critic was on, and most of them wouldn't get ANY of the jokes.  You shout out at random, "MEET INGMAR BERGMAN: $.25!" and all you get from them is a bunch of stares and a few quiet "Who?"s  I sigh along with the farmer as he tells Ingmar, "Best get back to the peanut patch with Polanski and Bertolucci."

I don't claim to know a lot about The Simpsons.  Just enough compared to the average viewer.  Nor do I consider any of these shows "rivals."  They all do their own thing and do it well, but they're never really competing with each other.  I do know that Futurama is probably the most mature of these shows to come along, picking up on excellent social commentaries where The Simpsons has dropped the ball.

I think what sold me on the brilliance of Family Guy, though, was one line from the pilot: "Hey man, your clock won't flush!"  The whole bachelor party scene was really brilliant, though.  (Peter, referring to the Statue of Liberty).  "Here's an idea, boys.  We'll drink until she's hot!" Then afterwards, Peter is hung over, laying on the kitchen table:

LOIS: Peter, what did you promise me you wouldn't do?
PETER: Drink at the stag party.
LOIS: And what did you do?
PETER: Drank at the sta-- whoa-ho!  You almost got me there!

"i guess i want more from a cartoon than overdone catch-phrases."  You know just as well as I do that these shows can't simply be broken down to those elements.  They're more complex than that, just as The Simpsons, of course, is more than its catch-phrases.

The Critic aired on ABC and FOX from '94-'95, then was cancelled, then aired on Comedy Central for a long time up until now, mostly on late Sunday night, early Monday morning type time slots.  It is now on DVD in the US. It also had a series of Internet shorts which aired in 2000.  Those are included in the DVD set.

Simpsons, Looney Tunes = top tier cartoons


All the rest pale in comparison. Unless we're talking about South Park, but that's a different beast.

Let's face it, Family Guy is overrated. Yes, parts are hilarious, but it's mostly fishing for a wild laugh among long pauses of total blah. It's less consistent than SNL even.

South Park really started to suck again at the end of last season, but its first new episode that aired this past Wednesday was inspired.  I just simply don't see the inconsistency in Family Guy that everyone else keeps harping on.  I guess that's because I've watched Family Guy so many times, and every time I step away from it for a few months then pull it back off the shelf and watch it again, it remains just as funny and consistent as ever.

And SNL, not that that has anything to do with anything, has been at the top of its game this year.  It's got a great cast, great writing, and even though Lorne's chosen less-than-stellar guests, they've all (except for Al Sharpton) been able to pull their own weight.

I prefer Family Guy to the Simpsons ... unless stoned/drunk, then The Simpsons is the thing to watch. No doubt about it.

I didn't realize that my avatar would have started such a thread. I agree with Onomatopoeia and that Family Guy is quite consistent when you don't watch it for a little while. I was and still somewhat am a huge Simpsons fan, having seen almost every episode and still loving the reruns. I also loved The Critic. It was hilarious and I was quite sad when it was cancelled. Futurama is also just as funny. I actually don't see much difference in the structure of those shows, they are just there to make us laugh with witty humor and if you don't like it..change the channel eh.

I gotta agree with this.  I watch FG after the first few minutes of The Daily Show, but I wouldn't say it is brilliant or all that original.  Futurama has more going for it.  Creative characters, interesting plots, jokes woven into the story instead of random jokes that constantly take us away from it.  Some episodes are even touching.

friend of mine works at a hospital in my home town and got copies of the actual x-ray.  story goes that some nurses did this late at night to see what it would look like, and get off...

i've got three others like it,  here's the PG-13 version.
