i recently watched La Jetée and Sans Soleil, two Chris Marker films released together on dvd by criterion:

(i was delighted to see macguffin's La Jetée avatar only a matter of days after i watched the film!)

both deal in amazing ways with time and memory,

La Jetée in the form of a 27 minute photomontage sci-fi tragedy about a time travel experiment.

and Sans Soleil as a documentary made of transcendent scenes and images filmed in Japan, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, Paris, and San Francisco. an extremely moving exploration of the fractal nature of memory.

i wish i had seen these when i was younger. recommended to everyone.
