I know we shouldnt really compare movies but everyone does compare these two, therefore it`s time for the ultimate showdown...which do you prefer?

I am more of a Pulp Fiction fan, i have to say.

In some respects, Jackie Brown is better than both of them.

'Dogs' is an excellent, tense and frightening film but 'Pulp' is just so fun and original. I could (and have) watch(ed) 'Pulp' billions of times. 'Dogs' leaves me cold and un-nerved. I also feel that 'Pulp' is superior character, storytelling and flat-out entertainment wise. It really can't lose.
On that note, 'Jackie Brown' is an excellent movie too, but didn't have the kenetic energy of 'Pulp' and 'Dogs'. It just kinda jump-started every now and then.

I watched Reservoir Dogs  last year for the first time in years and didn't enjoy it that much. I used to love it to death, though, but it hasn't aged for me well. Pulp Fiction, on the other hand, is still revitalizing every time I happen to watch it.

I agree that Jackie Brown is, in many ways, a better and more mature film, but Pulp Fiction still take the cake. It has the grittiness of Reservoir Dogs, but it completely transcends its pulp origins in that last scene in the diner. For that reason, I think it takes the cake over Jackie Brown.

I just couldn't choose between all three. I think Pulp Fiction has a few drags and that the ending is transcendent but also a bit of a sell out to conventional morality and storytelling. I haven't watched Jackie Brown tho I bought the DVD a while ago cause I haven't been in the mood but I remember thinking it was tough going for an hour and then absolutely brilliant, and my inclination is to think it's the best*. Reservoir Dogs is less enjoyable than PF but may be a better movie in that it's tighter and harder. Tight and hard are good.

*More 'mature' = better, though? Dubious.

Resevoir Dogs acts as one of the many ideas and stories that are within Pulp Fiction. The problem with that, is that it overplays its welcome and tries to extend itself into a feature length movie. While within Pulp Fiction, it would have been kept to an appropiate length and importance. In Resevoir Dogs, the idea that this movie is playing of crime movie cliche and injected with realism is well known in ten minutes, but the movie just continues to pound it on the level of the one idea and story it has. It really becomes a tiresome movie. Pulp Fiction, on the other hand, is overwhelming in all the different ideas and stories it has not to just suggest one gangster movie is being remade, but that all of them could be being remade and it is done at such a level, that they could be being made new with how they are being told and what the realism injected through violence and how people act are doing for the movie. Jackie Brown is also a great movie, but really is more of a straight forward movie than what Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs are as being remakes of sorts of a genre film. But within the confides of the poll, Pulp Fiction is the clear victor.

I'm in love with Jackson's character!
I love all the fuckin' dialoges in Pulpfiction!

The path of the righteous man is beset on
all sides by the inequities of the
selfish and the tyranny of evil
men.  Blessed is he who, in the
name of charity and good will,
                      shepherds the weak through the
valley of darkness, for he is truly
his brother's keeper and the finder
of lost children.  And I will
strike down upon thee with great
                      vengeance and furious anger those
who attempt to poison and destroy
my brothers.  And you will know my
name is the Lord when I lay my
                      vengeance upon you.

It's tough, but I have to go with Pulp Fiction. In many ways, Pulp Fiction is like an improved version of Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino learned from the first film and made the second. Much like Wes Anderson with Rushmore and The Royal Tennenbaums. The second works better as a whole then the first.

I fully agree with you on that. While I admired a lot from both RD and "Rushmore", I loved the next films a lot more. Now we just have to see if they'll one-up themselves again. I'm sure they will. (Tarantino did with JB but I'm sure he will up that with KB)

I'll hold the dissenting opinion on this (first time for everything, huh?). I thought Rushmore was a much better film than Royal Tennenbaums. I loved both, but Rushmore had the better script and was more fulfilling as a movie.

Really? I thought Royal Tennebaums was much more fulfilling. It was way more emotional and funny at the same time. The characters were far more believable in my opinion(as believable as characters like that can be). Plus, from a strictly aesthetic perspective, I found his style of cutting away to a static shot of a stamp collection, etc. worked way better in Royal Tennebaums. It struck me as more of an extension of the film, whereas I found it was just put in more cause it looked cool in Rushmore.
Although, I did see Royal Tennebaums before Rushmore, so that might be biaising me a bit.

I see exactly where you're coming from. I'm not saying Rushmore is far and away a better movie, I'm just saying that I enjoyed Rushmore more than RT because of its story and the way it all came together for me as a movie. Technically speaking, RT is the better movie (from a directing and cinematography standpoint), but I loved Schwartzman's character much more than Hackman's. Plus I usually am keen on leading character, linear movies more than movies with ensemble casts.

Speaking of which, isn't the cinematography beautiful?? The most memorable shot in the entire film for me is Mordecai flying while the camera follows him to the tune of "Hey Jude".

I also think Rushmore is the better film of both Wes Anderson films, even when I don't like Rushmore all that much anyways and dislike it even more when on thought afterwords. I'm going to get hell for it, but I'm going to post a new review of The Royal Tennebaums and bash it big time. Sometime soon that will happen.

Sorry I shouldn't have said he made a better film in JB... because it isn't the better one.. what I meant was it wasn't a clunker of a picture or anything.. Tarantino 'did it again', so to speak.. it wasn't a movie where people felt "ah QT.. you dropped the ball"..

Yeah, I feel the same.  Tarantino just needed to slow down and do this movie... take his time with it.

I don't know if Pulp Fiction just gained too much media and dorky fans, but it just lost interest with me.  Good movie when it came out, and I loved it, but I prefer the pacing better in Jackie Brown.  The characters and story drive the movie, not the witty dialogue.

Reservoir Dogs, the Quentin Tarantino classic cult film, is being adapted into an explosive action packed console and PC game. Scheduled for release in 2006, Reservoir Dogs will bring gamers deep into the seedy underground world of crime they fell in love with when it was originally released as a feature film.
