Title: Rate Lynch's Films
Post by: j_scott_stroup04 on December 15, 2003, 09:50:10 PM
Now, bare with me, for I have not seen Lost Highway, nor have I seen Eraserhead or Dune (I hear that's not much of a loss, though)

Using the standard four star scale

Here I go:

Elephant Man- ***1/2

Blue Velvet- ****

Wild At Heart- ***1/2

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me- **1/2

Straight Story- ***

Mulholland Dr.- ****

The ones I've seen:

Dune - 0 - So bad that I've almost wiped out the memory of ever having seen it.
Blue Velvet - *
Lost Highway - **
Mulholland Dr. - **

Let the flaming begin.

That's probably because you agree with me a bit on that.  Seriously, though, I admire what Lynch tries to do, but he fails at it so much because he can't seem to tell a cogent, coherent story.  That's what it boils down to.  I'm all for surrealism.  A big fan, really.  But it has to serve some sort of purpose.  Mulholland Dr. is his most accomplished work, as I've said before, but it falls apart when he can't seem to reel the story in.  It simply spins out of control.

Dune is actually a whole lot better than everyone thinks it is.

Care to expound?  The film almost put me to sleep, and its dialogue was just bad.  But, at least the special effects were decent.  (And I can't believe I'm actually giving a film credit for its special effects.)

What's the problem with Dune? It's one of my favourite science fiction films.
The special effects are great, the story is great too, great characters, good acting... a very nice film. I like it more than star wars

Not really, because I can see the potential there for something great.  But whereas Ebert finally drooled all over Lynch's last two efforts while panning the rest of them (save Elephant Man, IIRC, and rightfully so), I believe he's not quite there yet, and should stick to painting if he's not going to commit to telling a story.  A tapestry, no matter how tightly woven, will unravel if not tied at the ends.

and twin peaks is a masterpiece of modern television.

u should watch the straight story.

I don't have any trouble understanding his stories either.  His stories are purposefully ambiguous, and I get that.  But at the same time, I'd just like to see a little more effort put into it, instead of leaving so MUCH to ambiguity, and the viewer's interpretation.

And yeah, I want to see Straight Story, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Wild at Heart, and all of his stuff, really.  Though Dune really left a bad taste in my mouth.  It's just a matter of finding them.

Again, that seems like a contradiction.  You say you 'get it,' then what's the problem?  Would you like it all spelled out for you in Spielberg-ian fashion  ?

There's room for interpretation, sure, but I don't doubt that Lynch has solid intentions, or 'the answers.'  It's not like he makes films like Brakhage or something.  I'll take a cock-tease over a spoon-feeding any day.

Lynch is my favorite director and I loathe Dune, but get over that.  That's one fuck-up, and he's never done anything like it since.  I barely appreciate bits of the movie, but I also am glad he did it: it's the reason Blue Velvet got made.  But that's 'crap' too, so nevermind.

I've said it before and seem to be in the extreme minority when I say that WAH is in my top 3. It's just my kind of Lynch movie to the fullest but the ending kind of brings it down a bit, IMO.

i love wild at heart, i hate how people bash it. maybe it does get a bit slow towards the end and people don't like that. i know i don't really like that. but i still think it's a really good movie and utilized some really inventive filmmaking. visually, i think it's his strongest film.

as for you freakerdude, i hear the WAH dvd is coming out soon, but, if you can't wait any longer, go and import the Japanese dvd. that will play on any american dvd player. i don't think it's worth it though. from what i hear it should be out in region 1 sometime this year.

While it may not change your opinion if you already seriously hate Wild at Heart, it's pretty rare to find the *right* way to see the movie.

If you like the flick, and have been forced to watch the crappy Pan-and-Scan VHS that's on the market, to see the film in widescreen on the OOP LD, bootleg DVD, or if you're lucky enough to see it on the big screen (yay, film school was good for something), the intended vision Lynch put forth is truly a revelation.  The colors and widescreen compositions are just stunning.  Seek it out!

Yeah, when I saw it on the big screen for the first time last year (after learning to love it via that godawful VHS), there were things that I had never seen before -- entire scenes that lost all significance when viewed in the horrors of pan and scan. It was an entirely new movie. Of course, I already thought it was brilliant (although the first time I saw it I thought it was too lurid and schlocky to be enjoyable, fascination compelled me to watch it again and this time its beauty oozed from the screen like the sweat and other bodily fluids did from the characters on it).

What would you say, in general, were your qualifications for ordering the list, and to what degree is the top film distanced from the bottom film (besides the number of films between them; what I mean is do you like Dune half as much as Inland Empire, for example)?

Funny you say that, because I almost listed it that way, as I've done with some other things, like Radiohead albums.

I love his intense puzzle films the most, and as far as I'm concerned he's only actually made 4 of them (my top 4). The rest of his movies are sort of in a different category for me.

Blue Velvet is very good but probably overrated. Eraserhead is good but also a little student-film-ish and tedious. The Elephant Man is good, but not exactly my favorite type of film. The Straight Story is fantastic, and it might deserve a spot above Eraserhead, but I guess it's not quite as memorable.

Watching Dune is like looking at the aftermath of a fatal car accident; it's a failure in so many ways that I can't bring myself to watch it a second time. (To be fair, Lynch did not have final cut.)

Anyway, here's the edit:

Inland Empire
Mulholland Drive

Lost Highway
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With me

Wild At Heart

Blue Velvet

Eraserhead
The Straight Story

The Elephant Man

Dune

Eraserhead is good but also a little student-film-ish and tedious.

Funny you say that because I recently rewatched the movie, twice in a row, and thought I saw a strong connection between the film and the deadpan American indie films of the mid80s (because I'm calling Stranger than Paradise the first) and into the 90s with Tom DiCillo's Johnny Suede and Living in Oblivion, Alexandre Rockwell's In the Soup, etc., outrageous dreamy fantasy infused films executed straight facedly (films that are sometimes criticized for being student filmish and tedious).

QuoteI love his intense puzzle films the most, and as far as I'm concerned he's only actually made 4 of them (my top 4). The rest of his movies are sort of in a different category for me.

Makes total sense.

Part of the reason I couldn't execute this list, or really any list, is because I find it difficult to weigh two styles against each other. Even having discussed Eraserhead in the manner we have I still couldn't definitively conclude, for myself, that its relative merits and flaws form a concrete shape. It has characteristics, but its artistic methods produce emotional responses from me, to varying degrees, and these types of responses are difficult for me to categorize (when they're awesome, i.e. when they're done well and work for me, and this usually involves a component of mystery which Lynch is always willing to supply).

Lynch strikes me as a difficult filmmaker to rank because his films move me each in different ways. I think this is the distinct appeal of The Elephant Man, Dune, and The Straight Story to different types of people, especially perhaps those usually alienated by Lynch's flourishes. Perhaps from what Christian has said and listed he would know what I mean. But then if you love Lynch there are so many ways to like and dislike him. He jams my circuits in a way I don't mind and am totally okay with.
