My taste in painting is pretty mainstream. I like Van Gogh a lot and Renoir too. I like Impressionism and Pointilism. (Ferris Bueller's Day Off anyone?) My favorite painting is the Van Gogh one that depicts an outdoor cafe in Paris. I had the opportunity to visit the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam when I was there. He sure puts a lot of friggin paint on his canvas!

Reminds me of Rushmore. I'm a fan of any Escher, there were some paintings I saw at the High Museum during a Victorian era ( I think) exhibit, some of that stuff was so amazing, I wish I could remember any of the artists' names.

A better David Hockney than the one I posted before. A Bigger Splash, from 1967.

I was inspired to check out just who this David Hockney character was by Chuck Stephens's great liner-note essay for the Boogie Nights (double) DVD.

When I was in Vegas one time, the Bellagio had Steve Martin's paintings on exhibit. He had some amazing ones, included among them were a few Hockney's. That was my first experience with him.

I think one of them was ...Splash. Or at least a swimming pool one, anyway.

is it just me (I fit here too) or does it seem like alot of us are Dali fans.  Is it cause he is that good, or is it cause our knowledge of painters is that small???

Granted, I feel I know a bit in regards to art (more than the average joe), but I will be the first to admit that I would like to know more...maybe there is someone else I would like more, but just don't have knowledge of him yet.

Ditto to Walrus's.

I don't like Dali just because I'm sick of his stuff.  That is my best explanation, first time I saw it I was impressed.  Now, I just am sick of it.  In contrast, I see Van Gogh just as much and I don't get sick of his stuff, ditto with escher.

I want to point out that i HATE Warhol, his paintings and especially his films.

Well, for me, I just love surrealist art. I know a good deal of art (hence knowing the Death of Marat when that banner was made) but I can see what you mean about people being limited to a small number of main works, such as the Persistence of Memory.

my favorite is, was, and will be Van Gogh but many of you've talked about him so i won't do it again, i would post Dali too, but you already did it, so...
i'll introduce you a peruvian painter (my favorite peruvian painter) his name is Gerardo Chavez, he mix his elegant style with the energy of the traditional art of the old cultures what poblated peruvian territory so many years ago, the result is - in my opinion- just beautiful, this is one of his most popular paintings (my favorite is one called "The Boulevard", but i can't get an image on line :( ) this is called Mama (mother), enjoy it:

Dali-Disney Collaboration Premieres

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fus.movies1.yimg.com%2Fentertainment.yahoo.com%2Fimages%2Fent%2Fap%2F20041015%2Fnyr104_disney__dali.sff.jpg&hash=de180a52052d35e8c3d3cfb65aabf5ec9fdcb158)
Destino #66 by Salvador Dali, is from "Destino," the long-delayed 1946 film by Dali and Walt Disney, which is showing at a New York gallery. Only six-minutes long, the fantastical jewel packs enough symbols to keep art historians and psychologists busy for years.

A narrow waisted, emerald-eyed brunette flits through a desert full of melting clocks and wacky perspectives, looking for her lover. Giant telephones levitate. Bicyclists with bread loaf helmets pedal by.

No, it's not a delusion it's "Destino," a film by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney. Only six-minutes long, the fantastical jewel packs enough symbols to keep art historians and psychologists busy for years.

Begun in 1946 but shelved because of financial difficulties, the film was finally completed in 2003 by Roy E. Disney, Disney's nephew and son of Walt Disney Co.'s co-founder. It is showing for the first time in New York City as the centerpiece of a new exhibit at Animazing Gallery.

The honor surely would have delighted the exhibitionist Dali, who is getting another dose of fame during the Year of Dali 2004, an array of exhibits and events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the surrealist artist's birth on May 11, 1904.

His collaboration with Walt Disney puzzles some, but the two had great respect for each other, with Dali describing Disney as one of the three great American surrealists; Disney's imaginative freedom of animation mirrors Dali's artistic vision.

Roy Disney became interested in "Destino" while working on the movie "Fantasia 2000," and decided to animate it after learning that, legally, the company did not own Dali's work until the film had been completed in the manner first intended. He and director Dominique Monfery had the original recording of Armando Dominguez's ballad, "Destino," and the memories of studio artist John Hench, who worked with Dali on the story, as guides.

"Way back when they were working on it, Walt used to say, 'There's nothing to it it's just a simple little love story,'" Disney quipped.

"Destino" garnered a 2003 Academy Award nomination for best short film. Rendered with 21st-century technology, the result may be better than any film its creators could have made. A documentary DVD about "Destino" is planned.

Also on display at Animazing are 150 pieces of animation art from the 1920s through the mid-1950s Disney's "Golden Years" paintings by company artists Harrison and Peter Ellenshaw and one of Dali's ink drawings from "Destino." According to Animazing director Heidi Leigh, it's the first of Dali's story boards from the film to be shown or offered for sale in the United States, and has an estimated value of $45,000.

The Ellenshaws' sugar-spun castle paintings have the glitzy feel of Hollywood merchandising, but the early drawings and story boards are enchanting. Erasures, technical notations and orders wreathe wrinkled pencil sketches of Mickey Mouse with his original tail and solid black eyes Cinderella and scenes from "Fantasia." Cruella De Vil's lurid green cigarette smoke, as rendered in a gouache animation cel, seems about to drift off the page and poison the air.

"The vintage work is a very sophisticated part of Americana art," Leigh said. "These pieces could easily go into a museum show a couple of them have."

Still, the star of the show is "Destino," which appears at Animazing Gallery through Saturday. The film is also part of "Dali & Mass Culture," showing through Jan 30 at The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The exhibit at Animazing Gallery runs through Nov. 14 and will not travel.

My favorite painter is probably Robert Williams, but it's hard to find any of his images on the web.  I can't find a copy of my favorite one of his, which is called "Hell Toons."  Here are a couple of his other ones that I like a lot, though:

Williams also painted the picture that was originally used as the cover for Guns N Roses' "Appetite For Destruction" album.  ("Appetite for Destruction" was the name of the painting...  he didn't paint it for GnR, he just gave them permission to use it.)

His paintings would be ok if he wasn't such an ass about De Stijl. I can't remember this quote verbatim, but basically he referred to De Stijl as the greatest thing to happen to art since the paintbrush. Considering his paintings are made to service an artistic idea (like the idea of Composition in Blue, Yellow and Red breaking down forms into simple shapes and colors, or whatever), anything he says about the idea changes what the painting stands for. In this case, it stands for bullshit pretense.

I really wish I didn't sell back my art history book so I could give you that quote. Also, I don't like art that children can make. They may be visually pleasing, but still.

Chimp paintings fetch 26,000 dollars at auction

LONDON (AFP) - Three paintings by a chimpanzee named Congo were sold at auction in London to an American buyer for a total of 14,400 pounds (26,250 dollars, 21,610 euros), many times the estimated price.

Congo's works went under the hammer in a sale that included works by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, French cubist Fernand Leger and US pop artist Andy Warhol.

Presale estimates had put their price at between 600 and 800 pounds.

The buyer, Howard Hong, said he was a great fan of modern and contemporary painting.

Nicknamed "the Cezanne of the ape world" Congo turned out more than 400 paintings and drawings under the encouragement of anthropologist Desmond Morris.

Morris championed the theory that chimps had artistic sensibilities and put on a show of Congo's works in the 1950s.

Picasso is said to have had a Congo painting in his studio, in a style described as belonging to "the abstract expressionist school".

"I doubt whether any work by a chimpanzee has ever been auctioned before," Howard Ruthkowski, modern and contemporary art specialist at auctioneer Bonhams, said before the sale.

I have to say, I like the first and third pics.

Since a chimp has no conscious mind that we know of, I guess we can look at these like photography...  sometimes the camera catches a random moment that looks cool.  (I don't know how random these are, of course...  the color choices in #1 rock, and I bet the chimp didn't choose them, nor did he choose to paint on black paper instead of white, which looks awesome).

i've seen footage of him mixing colour. he knows what he's doin..

recently I've been really interested in Chen QiKwan, a Taiwanese architect- turned artist.  he's really brilliant at combining influences and mediums.  quite diverse an artist.

Quote from: Two Lane BlacktopSince a chimp has no conscious mind that we know of, I guess we can look at these like photography...  sometimes the camera catches a random moment that looks cool.
Having taken an anthropology class last fall that dealt with this subject, I have to seriously disagree with you. The history of "trying to make chimps do humanlike things" experiments may be mixed, but a lot of it was pretty mindblowing and successful. And compared to some of the other things chimps have done, abstract painting is a simple task.

And there may be a lot of anthropomorphism going on, but I have mixed feelings about it. I've always felt that it's unfair to reject something on anthropomorphic grounds when it may be an ability or tendency chimps (or other non-human animals) just have in common with humans. Isn't that bigotry... assuming that qualities that humans have (and something like the ability to paint and the capacity for creative thought) can't be found elsewhere?

i'll bet money there are monkeys that are more intelligent than some humans.

especially some humans who try painting.

do any of you remember an article in the nytimes a while back about an art show in soho that sold out and it was later revealed that a 4 yr old girl had done the paintings - kind of see a similarity between these two stories.

i think this goes back to that arguement in another thread ( the dead mice) - relating to the subjectivity of art and how important it is (in my opinion) to focus on the content rather than where and how and by whom it was created.

I don't see a justification anywhere (especially in the stories you cited) for ignoring context. Maybe you could clarify.

assuming your read my posts in the dead mice thread:

I wrote:
many people change their positions on art and film based on their inherent judgements and/or knowledge of the creator. for instance: that filmmaker seems like a little brat or this artist is gay or that painter used human blood,on and on (or in this instance - the painter is a monkey).

the art should not be judged out of the immediate context of the image/story/statement. Any knowledge beyond the work itself doesn't and shouldn't change or discredit that work."
______

Two Lane Black top discredits the painting of the monkey when it's contextualized, just as some people did for the young girl, just as some did for photograph of the mice finger puppets.

I'm saying it's irrelevent who the hell painted those images. It's very clear that there is a consistant style and form to those painting the monkey did. Choices were made. And by looking at three of them together, those choices follow a pattern. Obviously this monkey didn't just throw paint around nebulously.

People have a tendency to change opinion based on contextual variables. If one was told that those paintings were early works of Jackson Pollock they'd think it was brilliant, however upon finding out it's a monkey, they  very well may discredit the work or change their opinion.

Just as people did with the dead mice. They focused more on the contextual morality of HOW it was created, i.e. did or didn't those mice die  (for a lack of a better expression) "in the name of art".

It just think it's a bad way to approach art.

cowboy, I respect your point of view, because the only thing I really took out of art history was the movement from aesthetic appreciation to authorial masturbation. The closer we got to modern art, the worse off it all seemed.
