I'm absolutely sure that this must have already been brought up on the old message board I keep hearing about (sorry I missed out on that), and maybe everyone's choices are already known, but just to clarify (and for new members)...

where's PDL?

and I can't really choose a favorite. They're all completely different and therefore I love them for different reasons. I wanted to say Magnolia, but then I'm like, but Boogie Nights makes me so happy, and Hard Eight has such great dialogue, and PDL is just so pretty. See what I mean?

Okay: I'm crap and now cannot seem to even edit the damn thing...! Maybe this was a bad idea - perhaps one isn't meant to choose. But, for what it's worth: Magnolia - it was the first of his I saw, and probably my favourite film of all time, so - you know...

Added for you.

"Boogie Nights" for me. I love the rest too, but BN has a "Do you remember where you were when...?"-nostalgia feel for me because it was my introduction to PTA and it just blew me away.

The Silver Bullet

Magnolia. For me it works on so many levels and in so many ways. It can truly grab you and shake you up emotionally unlike all of the others [which are all brilliant pieces of work]. It can really leave you shell shocked.

Boogie Nights is just too cool. I love Magnolia and PDL but BN is un-fuck-with-able

fulty

Magnolia, for the complexity & emotional intensity.
Then PDL, because it changed my life ( plus it has a puppy dog..!! )

Curious as to how so?  Not hatin', but rather just curious....

SHAFTR

I haven't seen Boogie Nights or Hard Eight.

I am looking for Boogie Nights on DVD to buy.  I loved PDL and Magnolia so I see no reason to rent Boogie Nights only to buy it later...why waste the $4?

A brief history of my PTA experiences: Boogie Nights was one of those movies that I was never allowed to watch but snuck the copy of it my parents had rented. I remember thinking the "giant cock" line was hilarious, but didn't really get into the movie a few years later. Magnolia I initially hated when I rented it. Went to a film program, bought the Boogie Nights DVD and watched it a lot. Rented Magnolia again and started to actually like it. It was on TV and I had to watch it and then grew to love it, so much so that I started watching it all the time and had to go to the NY premiere of PDL (saw PTA in person...badass). Joined the boards. Saw PDL 3 times before (finally) watching Hard Eight which, big surprise, I also really love. All the movies just do it for me.
