'Late Night' host takes second turn as show's solo host

May 20 2006

LOS ANGELES -- Conan O'Brien is hosting the Emmys this year, all but assuring record ratings for the broadcast in Finland.

O'Brien, the host of NBC's "Late Night" and "Tonight Show" host-in-waiting, will take his second turn as solo host of the broadcast, which will air Sunday, Aug. 27 on NBC. They're airing a few weeks ahead of their usual mid-September date to avoid a conflict with NBC's Sunday night NFL telecasts.

"Conan was a natural choice," NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly says. "His comedic talent and hosting expertise coupled with his charm and spontaneity will make for a great show."

O'Brien hosted the Emmys the last time they were on NBC, in 2002, and won mostly positive reviews for his performance. He was also one of a gaggle of co-hosts for the show the following year.

Dick Askin, chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, says the academy is "thrilled" to have O'Brien back. "His style of comedy and humor is sure to make this telecast a memorable one and we are thrilled to working with him again," Askin says.

Jeff Ross, O'Brien's long-time producing partner, will executive produce the Emmy show with Ken Ehrlich, who handled last year's awards.

After a running "Late Night" bit in which O'Brien noted his resemblance to Finnish President Tarja Halonen, O'Brien traveled to the Scandinavian country earlier this year, where he was greeted by huge crowds. He met with Halonen and chronicled his trip for "Late Night" viewers.

He's set to take over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno in 2009.

You know the world is ending when the Emmy nominees are more satisfying than the Oscar nominees.

That is the best line-up for Best Comedy Series I've ever seen.  Sub My Name is Earl for Two And a Half Men and you've got every sitcom I watch on a regular basis.

It's just too bad Larry David is going to lose to Steve Carell and Will Arnett is going to lose to Sean Hayes, probably.

And I guess Lost didn't get Best Drama this year because no one knows what the fuck is going on with it anymore.  Biggest snub: No Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje for Supporting Actor.

The list is OK, some good aditions like President Logan getting the supporting actor.

At first, I made a face at this nomination but then I realized he's so fucking good at making you hate him that yeah, he deserves it.

polkablues

Is there really such a dearth of female talent on television that three of the five best actress in a drama nominations went to Kyra Sedgwick, Geena Davis, and Mariska Hargitay?  In a more reasonable world, they'd be nominated for Best Waitress at Dennys right now instead.

It's very weird how Lost got so snubbed; especially whozits who played Henry Gale... I thnk he would have been a shoo-in, but his part was too small for Supporting Actor and too big for Guest Actor.  And besides Lost, I was really hoping to see Rescue Me get a Best Drama nod.
