Fox, Uni game for 'Halo' film
Source: Hollywood Reporter

20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures are teaming up to make a feature film adaptation of the Microsoft video game "Halo." Negotiations still were under way at press time Thursday, but under the deal, Universal will take domestic rights and Fox will handle international on the project. Further components could be included in the agreement. The deal -- based on a script by "28 Days Later" scribe Alex Garland -- caused a stir earlier in the week when CAA sent it out via a messenger clad in a "Halo"-esque green costume. The deal came bearing some pretty stiff terms, including a two-hour bidding period and demands for $10 million against 15% of the gross. The script was commissioned by Microsoft, which also brought in producer Peter Schlessel to work on the project.

I do know that Peter Jackson is Executively Producing the Halo movie.  This means they'll have the Weta workshop at their disposal.

"There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high - water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." - Hunter S. Thompson.

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

Mortal Kombat prequel in the works
Source: Moviehole

Actor Robin Shou, a constant in the "Mortal Kombat" films, has revealed that he won't be reprising his role as the gallant fighter Lui Kang in the forthcoming "Mortal Kombat 3", after all. According to Shou, the film will feature a new hero....

....wait for it......

Sub Zero.

Yep, one of the icy villains from the first two films will be the 'savior of all', this time 'round. Taking a page out of "The Mummy Returns"/"Scorpion King" playbook, where the villain of the first film returned in a later film - a prequel - as a hero, the film will track back a few years, fixing on the younger – more honorable years – of the character, it seems. (What one has to remember, too, is that Sub Zero has a long bloodline – so the Sub Zero in this new prequel, might also be simply a relation of the one we've seen previously....... shit, just exposed myself as a one-time chronic player of the game, on the old Sega MegaDrive, didn't I?).

"Apparently, Sub-Zero will be the new hero. How'd that come about? Nobody knows. As if my character never existed. The story supposedly takes place before Lui Kangs time. A prequel of prequel" The Unofficial Mortal Kombat 3 Page quoted Shou as saying. "I haven't read the script but the word out there was... bad. I guess that's why it's taking this long for it to happen. I guess the main reason was that the producer didn't want pay the original casts their regular fee so by taking out all of the original characters, replacing with new characters, so they could hire unknown actors for a cheaper price. That's showbiz."

No word on whether Keith Cooke is still attached to reprise his role as Sub Zero, as originally planned.

Initially, most of the original "Mortal Kombat" cast, including Shou, Linden Ashby and Christopher Lambert, had been asked back for this new film – tentatively titled "Mortal Kombat : Devastation" – but things changed, it seems. In fact, a lot of things have changed with this one.... they were originally going to shoot in New Orleans, but have had to find a new locale after the Hurricane Katrina mess, with Thailand and New Mexico now in their sights.

polkablues

If you can't get your Mortal Kombat movie made because hiring Robin Shou, Linden Ashby, and Christopher Lambert would break the bank, it's time to pack the whole thing in and call it a day.  They might as well just shoot it on miniDV with all the director's buddies as the actors, then release the whole thing on YouTube in ten-minute chunks.

Plus, if a guy who didn't balk at the first two Mortal Kombats thinks the new script is shitty, it's probably pretty damn shitty.

Mortal Kombat Rebooted?
The latest buzz on the game-to-film franchise.

It seems you can forget about seeing Mortal Kombat III. Instead, the whole franchise will reportedly be getting the reboot treatment, a la Casino Royale and Batman Begins.

"The movie is not going to be a prequel, sequel, or in any form be related to the previous 2 movie. Pretty much like Batman Begins, is going to restart the series with new concepts, stories, etc.," a scooper informed Moviehole.net.

The report adds, "The reason it is taking so long is the script, so many parts are involved. The team at Threshold (the ones that holds the right to MK) are constantly writing drafts (along with the director), which they have to send to Midway (makers of the game) so the creator of the game (Ed Boon) adds notes and some input to the draft, then to the studio (rumored to be Lionsgate at this moment)."

Moviehole also points out that the film's director, Mink, has apparently been posting comments about the long-awaited project over at the IMDB.com message boards.

In his post, Mink revealed, "Casting adjourned for the moment before we got that far. As I have said in other posts we went back to the script after the initial movement on the project and have been rewriting (per the parties involved Threshold, Studio, Midway) since so no additional casting thoughts and or processes were even continued. As soon as the script is done we will proceed with casting again and all options in all casting areas are still on the table 100%."

The helmer reportedly confirmed that he has approached MK vets Christopher Lambert and Robin Shou about the film.
