The Grapevine / Re: The Kindergarten Teacher
« Last post by jenkins on August 15, 2018, 02:18:48 AM »
how do you read it?

i read it "she believes [he] is a child prodigy," he's in the subject position and who is accurate

for whom i think it'd have to be "she believes [him] [to be] a child prodigy"

although i'm not 100% on this because i can't fully explain the difference between "is" and "to be" in this scenario

The Grapevine / The Kindergarten Teacher

Directed by: Sara Colangelo
Starring: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gael García Bernal
Story: A kindergarten teacher in New York becomes obsessed with one of her students, whom she believes is a child prodigy.

This trailer raises my blood pressure to very unhealthy levels, it's so anxiety-inducing. It looks like Maggie Gyllenhaal is absolutely killing it in this one.

EDIT: Apparently it's a remake of an Israeli film of the same title from a few years ago: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3709678/?ref_=nv_sr_3

DOUBLE EDIT: Changed "who" in official synopsis to "whom," because I'm a goddamn pedant and it was driving me crazy.

This Year In Film / Re: Crazy Rich Asians

It's been pointed out to me that the bulk of those articles were written for a cover story/feature that appeared in yesterday's Sunday Calendar print-edition in The Times.

I haven't read the print edition of the Times in decades, so I missed that aspect.   When encountered solely via Twitter/latimes.com...it felt like an awful lot of verbiage for one film.  But I haven't tallied "Black Panther"'s press at the time, so perhaps this is the norm.

Because it's the first major studio movie featuring an all Asian-American cast since the fucking Joy Luck Club. 25 YEARS AGO. That's insane, and it's a big deal until the time comes that it's common enough to not be a big deal.

I only posted this here to ask why the L.A. Times has 21 articles on this film in the last 5 days.  Seventeen of them are dated Aug 10, 2018.

What the hell is going on?

Makes me want to boycott the fucking thing just on general principles.
[edit] A bit harsh, perhaps.

[2nd edit] Decided to calm-the-fuck-down and remove the 21 links I had posted here.
