It's understandable why Linklater wanted to make this nonstop gab-fest, which is in the vain of his "Before..." trilogy, even having much of the conversations take place on trains, but other than the trio of deft performances there's not much to justify its existence. I can see how some will find it timely, exposing political and military hypocrisies even when those who do the exposing have deep love for those institutions, but there's nothing new or revelatory here. "Last Flag" is enjoyable for the most part, especially with Cranston heavily channeling Nicholson's Buddusky and Carrell delivering a sweetly soft-tempered performance, I just wish it had more to say.
