Title: Indie Music Anyone?
Post by: A Fire Inside on April 02, 2004, 12:15:52 AM
OK I generally listen to punk, but lately I've been getting really into Indie and other "weird music" as my friends call it.

My current favs:

Ima Robot
The Mean Reds (VERY underground band from Tucson, AZ)
Death Cab for Cutie
Bright Eyes

Anyone else dig this stuff?

GUIDED BY VOICES TO SPLIT, THE WORLD OF INDIE MOURNS

GUIDED BY VOICES have announced they are to split after almost 20 years.

The band have announced on their website that the release in August of 'Half Smiles Of The Decomposed' will be their last album.

A statement reads: "After almost 20 years, assorted lineups, and countless albums, EPs, singles, triples, stolen bases, misdemeanor convictions, and broken hearts, Dayton, OH's fortunate sons are taking leave of your senses.

"'Half Smiles Of The Decomposed' to be released August 24 on Matador Records, will be the final album from Guided By Voices, one of the most acclaimed independent rock bands of all time.

Bandmember Robert Pollard said: "This feels like the last album for Guided By Voices. I've always said that when I make a record that I'm totally satisfied with as befitting a final album, then that will be it. And this is it."

'Half Smiles Of The Decomposed' is the band's 15th full-length studio release. It is possible that Pollard will continue as a solo artist.

He added: "I love the guys in the band, but I'm getting too old to be a gang leader. There's a sense of maturity, and even integrity, I think, in continuing as one's own self."

No one in this thread deserves the Jack Black Record-Store-Jackass avatar.

Get more derisive and knowledgeable by about tenfold, then we'll talk.

Stop listening to them and buy some Talking Heads and Devo albums.

Quote from: A Fire InsideThe Mean Reds (VERY underground band from Tucson, AZ)

Go ahead and keep listening to them, you'll soon feel quite lonely.

Quote from: A Fire InsideDeath Cab for Cutie

Keep one album, but move on quickly to Built to Spill, Sunny Day Real Estate, and The Shins.

Quote from: A Fire InsideBright Eyes

Stop listening immediately; purchase any three Bob Dylan albums from the 60s and Viva Last Blues by Palace.

Before doing any of the above, take good advice from your peers and buy Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain by Pavement and Alien Lanes by Guided by Voices.

I thought this was interesting. Newsweek mentions The Shins, Iron & Wine, The Postal Service, etc.

Maybe the suckage on the radio will end soon?

And a prize to the first person who finds the correct spelling of my name!

doubtful. it seems to be getting more popular with bands like Hoobastank or Puddle of Mudd and it really really sucks. i'm done with that phase.

Don't be so Sub Pop-centric.  Broken Social Scene, Franz Ferdinand, and The Faint are even less likely mentions.

FF and The Shins deserve to be famous.  The rest: good, but eh.

Did it on accident, promise! It could be that I'm not very Indie-experienced. But I'm open to suggestions and the one's mentioned have been taken into consideration.

But I do find it odd that The Shins aren't more popular (or popular at all). Though, I did hear a clip of "Young Pilgrim" on Mtv's "Pimp My Ride," no less.

For a Sub Pop record, Chutes Too Narrow has done really well, actually.  But I know what you mean.
