i really like GOLD (although his influences may shine a little too brightly).  i am not too into HEARTBREAKER and i thought DEMOLITION was sort of crappy.  (why put out an album of "demos"?  why not just finish the songs and make them good? who wants to listen to an album of unfinished mediocre songs?)  unless youre a great artist or something for historical purposes.  he seems like kind of a self centred moody asshole though in real life.  i could be wrong though.

I hear he's going through the same thing Wilco did last year with his record company right now.

really? that sucks. did you read about his weird breakdown thing in ROLLING STONE?  he posted on his message board like 4 times about him quitting the music business and then said he was just drunk or something.  i wonder why his record company would have a problem with him, hes far more successful now than he used to be?  and he is very productive.  hmm...

i liked Heartbreaker a lot, more raw, emotional stuff....Gold was definitely a more polished album (pissed when i heard that awful cover of When the Stars Go Blue by the Corrs and Bono), his influences ARE pretty obvious, but i love it anyway, and he does bring a new element to his music.

Fucking love the Whiskeytown album, Stranger's Almanac. I also found a live performance at a place called Exit Inn on the internet, it was just Ryan, a guitar and harmonica, very much solidified my love for his music...Gillian Welch joins him for the last few songs. Time (the Revelator) is a great original Welch song.[/i]

i think he is kind of a moody asshole but thats hwta i love about him, if u go to his website it all has nothing to do with him, its just stuff about like national potato day and crap- its so hilarious- i love him as an artist and as an eccentirc.
I think heartbreaker is actually my favorite, i love the simplicity it has.
i personally liked demolition, but i do agree that he should have juts put out a new cd instead, and it piss' me off that he says he has like 1000000000 songs and he puts out demos. but o well, apparently he just recorded a new album, cant wait.

Adam Duritz does a really great cover of "Oh My Sweet Carolina" by Adams. ...

Of course, the two bands, and their fans, are pretty strongly linked.

In his interview with Playboy they mention how last time they talked to him, he was championing the White Stripes, but now he just ripped them apart.

So I picked up both new Ryan Adams' discs.

I find it interesting that someone could have both the best AND worst discs in the same year, but he's managed to do it.

Love Is Hell (pt.1) is half of the long-overdue follow up to Gold. Deemed too depressing and dark for general release, the execs shit-canned it (at least that's the rumor). So now, a year later, we finally get to hear it split into two EPs (I presume to make some extra dough, a la Kill Bill). Well, thank god somebody fought for its release. LIH is pure brilliance, along the lines I've come to expect from Adams.

Now, on to the "album proper", Rock n Roll, the official follow up to Gold (because of course we can't count the wonderful demo album we got last year). I dunno how many of you play guitar, but those that do, y'know when you're jamming with friends, and you've had one beer too many, and you start playing big fat riffs that go nowhere, and you start making up lyrics on the spot, and you laugh and play, and generally just fuck around? Well, imagine you released an album of that. Good lord, this is the guy whose work I sucked off of Kazaa like a vacuum, whose unreleased catalogue was every bit as brilliant (and large) as the official releases, who wrote 4 songs a day and they were all great??? One can only hope Ryan was playing a crule joke on the suits (or us, maybe), and now he's got it out of his system. Halfway through the album I couldn't believe that there was not ONE MINUTE of decent music on it. Then the title track, Rock N Roll, started playing. Outstanding... for a moment I was caught back up in the awe I had when I first heard him. It was fucking bliss, 2 minutes or so, and then it was over. The rest of the album was sufficiently as bad as the first half. It was as if Ryan had made an apology with the title track (if you hear it and pay attention to the lyrics, you'll know what I mean)... and gawd, it was so good it almost salvaged the entire thing. But not quite.

So I have one message for Mr Adams: please fuck around on your own time. You have 6 (or so I hear) albums' worth of backlogged material. Release that. We don't need another Strokes or Vines or BRMC, they will do just fine. We need you to be you -- the bastard son of Bob Dylan and Keith Richards. And we need you back fast, please.

Everyone go buy Love Is Hell. And leave that other shit stack on the shelf where it belongs. I've been praising this guy way too much, way too loudly, and I simply can't defend it...

i like rock n' roll.  but i am not a HUGE ryan adams fan.  i didnt get into him until Gold, which i thought was great.  i went back and downloaded Heartbreaker which i never really got into for whatever reasons.  then i saw him live.  the performance was both awesome, and tedious.  moments were incredibly rock n roll but there was a lot of self indulgence going on.  still i just figured thats his thing, so it was an okay show.  he was nice enough to sign my Gold cd so he seems cool enough.  i did not like demolition at all, (see previous thoughts on othe rpage).

and now out of the blue some new stuff comes out.  well, like i  said the other day the album leaked and i got it, (having not even listened to him in about a year), and i like it.  it is completely completely different.  and full of big stupid riffs and such.  but i think the songs are still good, (in that stupid and fun pop britney and boy bands strokes-y kinda way, not in that deep and meaningful coldplay, metallica, radiohead way).  not that there's anything wrong with that.

whereas Gold seemed like his 'classic rock' 60's and 70's album, this seems more like his late 70's and 80's album with songs like so alive, burning photographs, and she's lost total control that sound right out of that era.  i dont know that this is the direction he's going in, i think its probably just a pit stop to prove to himself that he should be able to do whatever he wants.  i believe the new spin (with the strokes on the cover) has an article on him where he talks about the new cd and with his growing up on punk and Black Flag and hardcore and one of his friends was like "well, where's that in your music?"  so here it is.

i dunno, i had ZERO expectations, like didnt know if i was gonna buy it or not, but i will now.  have not heard love is hell yet, but when i get some money ill probably get both.

Jack Johnson's new album was a major dissappointment, but definitely not Ben Harper's   :-D
I got into Ryan Adams after I was on train to visit a friend and a complete stranger told me that he was awesome and I should look into him. It was a pleasant discovery.

i've been listening to the album today a lot after your review sonowthen, just to make sure it really isnt crap.  and i think i like it more the more i listen to it.  my suggestion is go in with an open mind and just start playing it in the background.  i think it'll grow on you.

at the suggestion of mod-age, I have been spinning the album in the background over the last couple days. I was over-harsh on it. It is not shit. I definitely like it least of all the Ryan Adams releases, but it's growing on me. It's decent pop/glam/rock.

But everyone needs to get the EP. It's amazing. Love Is Hell. Go listen to it. Now.

Wheeee.

oh goodness, Politcal Scientist is probably the best song he's ever written. It's what Coldplay has been trying at the last two years.

Shadowlands is beautiful.

And his reinvention of Wonderwall breaths new life into an old(?!) classic.

It's 400 times more complex and subtle than RockNRoll, as much as I'm enjoying that one now.

Dem Lit Man
By Wes Orshoski

But at the moment a smile spreads across his face.  We're talking about "Empty Baseball Park," a tune he wrote with his former band, Whiskeytown, and the subject brings back good memories.

"I always liked that song, and that line in it about stumbling into an empty baseball park—'Strike one, strike two, strike three, we're all out,'" he says, a far-away look in his eyes.  "That was all about the whole band, the guys in Whiskeytown.  We literally rehearsed behind a baseball park for junior league kids in Raleigh."  As he slouches over the table of a 10th Street bar in Manhattan, Adam's smile widens and he stares off into space as he remembers mischievous, drunken afternoons rooting for local youngsters, and pot- and Miller High Life-filled nights at the park, not far from the North Carolina State University chapel.  "We would just get loaded and go over there, and we'd be running around tacklin' each other and just being f----s.  It was the funniest place to hang out.  We'd just get loaded and wake up hungover on, like, home plate, like, at 6 a.m. [Drummer] Skillet [Gilmore] would be asleep in the bleachers."

"Empty Baseball Park" was left off the original pressing of Whiskeytown's 1994 debut, Faithless Street, but Outpost/Geffen included it with several other bonus tracks on its 1998 reissue.  Somewhat ethereal, the song sounded little like the standard alt. country fare that made the band No Depression darlings.

However, that one song made clear – some five years ago – that Adams was an artist who wouldn't be boxed into one genre.  Since then, we've heard him embrace a myriad of directions and styles – and successfully execute each with apparent ease.  "He does folk, he does bluesy stuff, he does country, he does rock, and I believe it all," ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha told this writer in 2001.  SO, given this, it seems odd that Adams' record company, Lost Highway, rejected Love Is Hell, the album he refers to as "the work of my life," and which he describes as a "completely atmospheric, spiritual, sad, freaky, unrock record."

The album references artists that Adams says Lost Highway, a roots label, was not interested in him referencing – Leonard Cohen, Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, The Smiths.  Additionally, the lyrics on the album, even by Adams' own account, are "really f--- -ed up."  It bears little trace of the alt. country strumming on Whiskeytown albums, the wounded folk of Heartbreaker or even the ragged, Stonesy rock of Gold.

"Love is Hell kind of had – has – the potential to be a doomy record that can befriend people who are in a doomy place," Adams says.  "And that wasn't a career move that my label felt like I needed to make at that time."

Adams had just finished a lengthy tour supporting Gold, and was feeling rather burnt out when he wrote and recorded Love is Hell.  "I was going through a lot of personal things, a lot of heaviness."  Declining to share any details, he notes, "All you have to do is listen to the album and all the answers are there."

While the rejection did – and still does – irritate Adams, when he explains how his eventual battle with the label ended, his voice rings with triumph.  And it should: After cutting ties with the label for several months, and recording another album on his credit card, the singer persuaded Lost Highway into issuing the equivalent of three albums within a six-week timeframe.  His next "official" full-length CD, llornkcoR ("rock'n'roll" spelled backward) arrives Nov. 4, along with the first two EPs, Love Is Hell, Part 1.  The second Love Is Hell installment comes out in December.  The Eps will later be joined together as a double vinyl.

While Love Is Hell is doomy and dark, llornkcoR (which Adams calls "Rock'n'Roll Reverse") is the singer's heaviest record yet – at time New Wave-y, at times blistering.  While some early feedback has called it his reaction to the current rock scene, Adams says that's false:  "This was just the thing I needed to do, 'cause I hadn't done it yet.  It was a fun thing to do, the obvious thing to do."

While perhaps it's just the particular ebb and flow of this conversation, it seems as though the more Adams talks about the two projects, the more he seems to downplay llornkcoR – which features guest turns from Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and ex-Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur – as if it was easy to make.  While the album is certainly a departure for Adams with its post-New Wave and garage elements, it still feels like a natural follow-up to last year's Demolition.

On the other hand, Love is Hell was apparently a record he obsessed over:  "It's something that I totally believe in, and people close to me, who have heard it, it's affected them in very serious ways – not just in, like, 'This is nice, this is big and it rocks.'  It's completely unstylized and an absolutely reckless album, and I think that later on, it'll be, I think it might be a serious album...the place where I was the most myself and freest."

Born in Jacksonville, N.C., Adams who just turned 29, has been back in New York for nearly two years.  Aside from brief stays in Nashville and Los Angeles – where the Heartbreaker and Gold albums were recorded, respectively – he's spent pretty much all of his 20s in Manhattan.  "I just belong here," he says.  "I get along here.  It makes sense to me."

Adams split with the Pink Hearts, the Nashville-based band that supported him on his Gold tour, after a Fourth of July gig in Battery Park.  Since then, he's shared band members with Jesse Malin, whom he's producing once again.  (Adams helmed the former D Generation front man's acclaimed solo CD, The Fine Art of Self Destruction).

Many of the songs on Adams' forthcoming releases have come out of writing sessions with close friend and drummer Johnny T., and the owner of two of Adams' East Village haunts (including the bar we're currently sitting in).  They arranged songs together, with Adams producing.

A number of llornkcoR songs, the drummer says, were first takes.  We run through a verse and a chorus and then Ryan says, 'OK, stop.  Roll the tape.'  And I'm like, 'Where's the bridge?'  'I'll nod you in on the bridge, just follow along.'  And I find that to be exhilarating, to be flying by the seat of your pants, but just to be able to have a vocabulary where you can actually kind of guess where the next person in going or where the next part's going to be—or not—where he' getting ready to go big and I bring it down."

As a result, the disc boats a few "happy accidents," Johnny T. continues: "There's a lot of parts on that record that happened because I didn't know what was coming next and I'd switch to something else, and we're like 'Whoa, that was funky.'"

In addition to the dozens of songs they plan to release this year, they also have plans to post new songs on Adams' website each week.

During our two-hour conversation, Adams exhibits flashes of the precociousness, brattinesss and arrogance for which some have come to lathe him.  When he first sat down, the baby-faced singer seemed bored, doodling "Don't write on the table" on the paper tablecloth.

Repeatedly, he voices a "f---you" attitude to "haters" in the press and elsewhere who take swipes at him for his lifestyle, his music being derivative, or the temper tantrums he's thrown onstage after yet another "Summer of 69" request.  He's angry and fed up.

And although he doesn't seem to care anymore—if he ever did—whether people understand where he's coming from, the longer he talks about these new records—and his love of music in general—Adams reveals a side of himself that's more endearing, and probably more telling in regards to who he really is.  What one sees when they get past the "f---this," "f--- that" façade is the singer-songwriter's music geek/mad-scientist side.  And this quickly makes up for all the other nonsense—becoming as charming and heartwarming as his songs.

He talks of working on flamenco rhythms and accidentally—and quite wonderfully—paying homage to Johnny Marr and The Smiths.

Of loving the Strokes' Is This It so much that one day when he was sick, he figured out all the parts on each track.

Of song structure and learning the vocabularies of each instrument, and what happens when you mix them up.

Of discovering what made him react so strongly to Nirvana, what got in his head about The Replacements "outside of genuine sentiment or totally being overwhelmed by emotion and music."

Of understanding how to hit people in the gut the same way the Marr, Kurt Cobain and Paul Westerberg did.

Of falling in love with not only the way music makes him feel, but the mysteries of how it's created.

Of fully understanding music on a spiritual level, being one with it and with God in order to create greater art, or at least more fulfilling art.

Adams says he fees that the truest conversation one can have with God is a creative conversation.  He's trying to remove others—be they critics, fans, label personnel, anyone and everyone—from that conversation.  He's trying to simplify.

"I wanna simplify so far back to the point where I see the buffalo, and I grab the piece of charcoal and I go to the cave.  And I sketch the buffalo on the cave wall.  That's the highest art."

"Ya know, the caveman certainly wasn't trying to f—in' impress the girl down the street that worked in a record store with his goddamn caveman drawing," he says with a laugh.  "People couldn't understand how beautiful that buffalo was, and something compelled him to go to that wall and draw a buffalo on the wall because he dreamt of the buffalo.  His relationship was still directly with God, not even with the cave wall or the charcoal.  He's like 'I see buffalo.  I recreate buffalo.'  That's all it is.  I want to get there."

And he stresses that with each swipe he nudges a little closer.  "I say, 'Bring it on.  Go and get the whole bucket of shit and throw it at me, 'cause I see the cave clearer every day.'"

Ryan Adams breaks arm during performance

Ryan Adams has had to cancel some live dates after breaking his wrist during a UK gig.

The singer fell off a stage during a sell-out show at the Liverpool Royal Court last night (Thursday).

The accident happened during the last song of the set and fans say he tried to continue performing but stumbled off stage clutching his arm.

He was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he was treated for a fracture.

Gigs in Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain have been cancelled. He was due to return to the UK in February for gigs in London, Brighton and Birmingham, but a spokesperson for Ryan has said it looks unlikely the gigs will take place.

Ryan Adams kicks ass!  One of my favorites.  I hadn't heard of him until listening to a bootleg of the Counting Crows when their leader singer, Adam Duritz, started to praise him on stage before covering one of his songs. I was like, "I gotta check this dude out".  I bought one of his CDs, "loved it", and then started to collect "Whiskeytown" stuff.

They turned me into the whole alternative-country scene.

Still haven't heard his newest album.  I don't know why, but I keep putting it off.

Adams Injury More Serious Than First Thought

Rocker RYAN ADAMS could never play the guitar again, after falling off stage and breaking his wrist last Thursday night.

Doctors have told the NEW YORK, NEW YORK star he could lose 20 per cent of the movement in his wrist following the accident at Liverpool, England's ROYAL COURT venue when he tumbled two metres (six feet) off stage.

Adams also injured his leg and a microphone cut his lip in the fall, which happened midway through a performance of SHADOWLANDS.

The indie singer-songwriter - who has now flown back to recuperate at home in his native America - has been told it will take a minimum of six to nine weeks for his injury to recover.

The 29-year-old says, "I heard the noise but I didn't feel the pain. The sound of my wrist breaking off my arm was really loud. It popped. People heard it. I think you could hear the break.

"I remember thinking, 'OK, my neck is fine,' then making sure my back was OK. Then people came to help me. Then I looked at my arm and went, 'Oh s***.'

"To begin with I thought it was just swollen but after a first glance I knew exactly what had happened. I was thinking 'This is it, it's f***ed.' By the time I walked off and saw it, it was so f***ing heinous.

"These ER people had to cut off all my bracelets. When they were cutting them off my 1974 tattoo, blood was coming out of my skin even though there was no cut. It was trickling through my pores. That was when I almost fainted. Some people couldn't look at it.

"They said it'll take at least six weeks or two months. They might have to wire it together with metal wires.

"The guess now is that I could lose up to 20 per cent of the mobility in my wrist. That's the percentage I won't be able to bend it any more.

"My fingers and hand will be fine but I'll have to re-train my wrist. We'll see about guitar but it might make me a great piano player. I have a feeling I'll be able to pull through. It's all about making sure I can get my wrist about a guitar."

Quote from: myadopteddaughterI recently bought Ryan Adam's new album "Rock n' Roll" and I like it a lot. I mean, it's completely different from his other stuff, but I still think it's awesome.

It's more loud, right?  I heard he released two versions (Part 1 & 2) and the second part was a bit slower.

I still need to check it out.  I'm lazy!

Rocker RYAN ADAMS could never play the guitar again, after falling off stage and breaking his wrist last Thursday night.

That is ashame.  I heard about this about a week ago on his site.  Ryan was a true sport, even put photos from his trip to the hospital.

I hope he gets back to together, a true talent, that is just starting to get noticed in the mainstream.

RYAN ADAMS will release 'LOVE IS HELL' as a complete album in May

The album was originally sold as two mini albums, after record label 'Lost Highway' felt the album "too dark" to release. Adams has since released 'Rock 'N' Roll'.

Adams, who is currently recovering in New York after surgery performed on his broken wrist, will release the album on May 3.

RYAN ADAMS has announced details of an exclusive download-only EP

The three-track 'Moroccan Role' EP is available exclusively through iTunes now.

The track listing is:

'Ah Life'
'I'm Coming Over'
'Don't Even Know Her Name'

AMERICAN TRILOGY
Source: NME

RYAN ADAMS has announced plans to release three albums, including one double LP, this year*.

A mock wedding invitation appeared on the singer's official website revealing the titles and producers for Adams' forthcoming releases.

So far 'Cold Roses', the double album, is the only one with a confirmed release date, April 19.

That record is credited to Ryan Adams And The Cardinals and is produced by Thomas Schick, who has also produced Willy Mason.

Schick has also produced an solo release to be titled 'Jacksonville' after the town where Adams was born.

The other album revealed is another solo effort called '29', which sees Adams reunite with long-time collaborator and Kings Of Leon producer Ethan Johns.

no, there were a handful of demos he was going to release as a box set but ended up just taking the best material from all the misc pre/post gold sessions and putting out the sub-par Demolition.  however, all releases have been leaked in their entirety and there is somewhere around 100 studio recordings of unreleased Ryan Adams stuff that is pretty good.  like, the songs on demolition work better in the context of their respective albums and not as well mixmashed together.  this is all new stuff.  also, with the love is hell and rock n roll sessions theres still an albums worth of stuff he recorded but never leaked or got released as a b-side or anything else so far which i would like to get a hold of.

the website works fine for me.  its flash.

The same website post revealed that Adams and the Cardinals had recently finished recording music for the new Cameron Crowe movie Elizabethtown. "What started as 1 ended up being 18," Adams wrote. "Only one or so will be used. But this is your heads up that there might be another Cardinals record in your near future." Good god, ANOTHER Ryan Adams album this year?! it's funny. country is the genre of music that, like, the world is told to hate. and even if one does hate it from the bottom of their heart, if you're a real music lover, a lover of any fuckin' melody, despite what genre its in, is bound to unexpectedly like something like it that comes along. it's strange but not so strange that i really love this record. even as i'd never loved real country music, and hadn't ever listened to any Gram Parsons records or anything. ryan adams to me was the kind of artist that i can't really relate to when i first got into him, which was only about a couple of months ago (and i still can't to a certain extent). he's too eclectic, in a really bad way. gold has it's really good songs, and then songs that just don't speak to me. and rock n roll is just a jumble of rock n roll. with also a few sparks of goodness. i heard love is hell and was confused.. like.. "what genre is this guy? and why can't he just pick one?" (although i really love love is hell). then i heard cold roses and my pov changed. as Stephen Thomas Erlewine said on his allmusic review, "It's an assured, comfortable collection of 18 songs that play to Adams' strengths because they capture him not trying quite so hard." and i got that the second i read it. i'm no ryan expert, but i got that. he wasn't trying so hard and it was utterly and audibly evident. he was in a groove and it must've been the whole band thing. and then comes jacksonville. a record that, fan or not, if you listen to, you know comes from ryans heart. he's not trying to be cheeky or anything of the sort. he's writing music the way his heart would. so i ask the people that kind of like him, like polkablues, to really give it a shot. cause this record, in my mind, is undoubtably his best yet. as for squints, you like wilco and that's cool, as do i. but ryan, in essence, as shit to do with what tweedy and the guys are doing. listen to "the end" off the new record, or a really superb song called "firecracker" off his sophemore record Gold. if you don't like these songs, ryans not for you. maybe not just yet, maybe not ever.

i'm a newly converted fan. but here are some songs that would make your assumtions about adams seem invalid.

whiskeytown:
wither, i'm a flower[i really, really like this song..if you dont like it...you can stop here]
dancing with the women atthe bar
bottom of the glass
the bar is a beautiful place

solo:
jacksonville skyline
oh my sweet carolina
to be young
bartering lines
this house is not for sale
magnoli amountain
sweet illusions
meadowlake street
mockingbird sing

theres some good ones imo.

the only thing that worries me about adams is that i hope he doesn't fall into the same category as john mayer would and all his fans are 15 year old girls wearing tacky lip gloss.

Lately I've been thinking that Ryan Adams is probably my favorite musician. I think this knowing full well how derivative he is, and that probably half of the songs that he's put out are complete shit, because most of the songs that aren't complete shit affect me like no other songs.

About his new albums: Cold Roses is pretty decent. I'd probably give it a 7/10 or so. None of the songs are just god awful, but none of them are really classic or anything, except for maybe Let It Ride, Dance All Night, and Meadowlake Street. My biggest problem with Cold Roses is how fucking thin it all sounds, if that makes any sense.

Jacksonville City Lights is my favorite of the three albums. It's the most country album he's ever put out, including Whiskeytown. Only a handful of songs (Dear John, Silver Bullets, September, and maybe Games) deviate somewhat from that traditional, old-timey country sound. There are a few songs that I skip on here, like Games and The End, but the rest are really solid. My favorite songs are Hard Way to Fall (even though I like the solo acoustic version a lot more), Dear John, The Hardest Part, September, and Don't Fail Me Now.

29's my least favorite. Most of the songs are story songs and the stories are just boring and the lyrics are bad for the most part. I wish he'd stop singing about god damn prostitutes. My favorite songs are Blue Sky Blues and Elizabeth, even thought they're essentially the same song.

My favorite album of his (and of all time) is, of course, Heartbreaker. Every song on there is essential Ryan Adams, the lyrics are great, and the production is perfect. The drums on Come Pick Me Up, perfect. Also, it's a really heartbreaking album. Ho ho ho!

I saw him live at the Ryman in Nashville a little over a year ago, and other than a fucking divine Devendra Banhart show, it was the best concert I've ever been to. Only thing I didn't like about it was Jesse Malin opening, and that guy sings like I take a shit.

Anyway. I like Ryan Adams, he is a good musician and Dear Chicago is his best song.

i think we can remove the question mark.

i still think dancing w/the woman at the bar is the greatest ryan adam anything...

a) it has a beautiful melacholy country feel to it
b) lyrics conjure up vivid ideas about sitting alone half -drunk at  a bar smoking a cigarette, meeting eye 2 eye w/ a woman, gatherign the courage to make your move, walk over to her, share a whiskey drink, and sort of slow dance....while thinking "after last call, i will make love to her".............

when I see the moon,I hear the sound of the strip just calling my name
just calling my name
when I see the moon,I hear the sound of the strip
just calling my name yeah it's calling my name

man, I love the feeling when I go out
dancing with the women at the bar
man, I love the feeling when I go out
I always know my woman's close somewhere

"Carolina Rain" is my new favorite song of all time of the moment.

i like all three for the most part. the first two were a bit long (and i'm sure he recorded several songs that didn't even make it as b-sides). i wished he would have done some better vocal takes on some of the jacksonville tracks. i haven't had time to listen much to 29 but it seemed more cohesive to me. only thing i can think to excuse that crazy reverb on track 3(? i think) is that maybe it didn't sound so strange on the expensive studio monitors. otherwise, i just don't understand it. to me 29 shows him progressing in his songwriting. there are 'stranger' chord changes and obtuse melodies like he's never sung before. also if you look at the booklet, 29 was recorded and mixed in 12 days. that's pretty amazing.

and to think, that was over a year ago, so no telling what he's recorded by now.

This statement is confusing to me.  The reverb was an artistic decision.  I'm sure it sounds exactly as strange as he meant to make it sound.  And apparently it didn't work for you, but to me, when he sings "...but we sink.................... INTO THE OCEAAAAAAAAAN," it's like getting kicked in the balls with emotion.

And I agree with Neon about "Carolina Rain" (it's like the musical equivalent of a John Cheever story), though I'm  :( that he didn't like the album as a whole.  Especially since it's the perfect sitting-out-on-your-porch-on-a-summer-night album.

it's not just me. almost every response/review i've read of the album mentions that part. the actual idea of adding reverb at that moment is pretty cool, it's just so over the top it takes almost everyone out of it. i'm just saying if it were just a tad bit more subtle it wouldn't stick out so much.

i liked the effect...simple things like that sometimes elevate the song..and thats a great line to use the effect too...i pretty much agree w/polka on this...

whats that song on pneumonia...is it "jacksonville skyline"?....its the song where the last chorus goes....."i ended up a soldier on the weekend"...that shits great...to me that song is pretty much the whole vibe of jacksonville city nights....thats why i love it....um, i know i dont make any sense...damn, i wish we could get together over some drinks  and chill out listening to the albums in person then discuss.......

I'd never listened to Ryan Adams until my friend burned me a copy of his CD with the Cardinals.  I'm currently very, very addicted... so what album do I buy next?  (would go through the thread, but my Neo Citron is making me drowsy)

mod got me into him a while ago -- I started out with Gold.  Some tracks there will already be familiar just from osmosis.  Favorites: New York, New York; When The Stars Go Blue; and Nobody Girl, 'cause you can kinda get lost in it.  He did a cover of Oasis's Wonderwall which was featured on The O.C. a while back and is pretty gorgeous.  Find it if you can.  I haven't really gotten into 29 yet.  It's more moody music, kinda the same vibe as Fiona's leaked album, with the sulky, slinky wanna-drink-martinis-in-your-bathrobe vibe it gave off.  All the songs are pretty long and epic, but it takes a certain mindset to really appreciate it all.  Back when polka was talking about the reverb in Night Birds... well, it pretty much makes that song.  It gave me chills, so I'd say it's worth checking out for that alone.  29, the title track, is decent too, but nothing else has really clicked for me yet, though I've only given that one a few listens.

Suicide Handbook (21)
Pinkheart Sessions (18)
Pinkheart Sessions II (17)

Destroyer (14)
Swedish Sessions (11)
Exile On Franklin Street (24)
and about 50 b-sides from Gold, Love Is Hell, Rock N Roll, Cold Roses, & Jacksonville City Nights

those are all full studio recordings.  though the quality isnt great (as you may know from suicide & pinkhearts), theres some great stuff in there.  and theres more.  this is just all i've bothered to track down.

Yes, bad in such a fun way. Very few others artists have made so many good records, but if you wanna hear Ryan, and not one of his serious albums, you have his 80's Party Rock record to throw on. Believe me, I fought and fought this album, and Mod made me see the light.

Besides all the B-sides and unreleased albums, if you go online and spend some time, you can grab tons of great live bootlegs with different versions, plus all the live stuff he just writes on the spot and never records properly.

Ryan Adams Takes It Easy
Source: CMJ

Never one to sit around twiddling his thumbs, prolific singer/songwriter Ryan Adams is doing what he does best: releasing another album. His ninth solo release, Easy Tiger has been scheduled for June 5 daylight via Lost Highway.

While there has been no confirmation on the specifics of the album, we do have a tracklist, which contains a selection of songs that have been featured at one point in time on his enigmatic website. The final sequence(like many of his live shows) is still to be determined.

Tracklist For Easy Tiger

- The Sun Also Sets
- Halloween Head
- Off Broadway
- Two Hearts
- Tears Of Gold
- These Girls
- Two
- I Taught Myself How To Grow Old

About damn time...

Besides "Off Broadway", which I always thought of as one of the more forgettable Suicide Handbook tracks, I'm only familiar with "Everybody Knows" and "Two", but those are both great songs.  Reminiscent of Heartbreaker or Suicide Handbook, with just a touch of Jacksonville City Nights.

Side note: does anybody have or know where I can find an mp3 of the "Look Who's Got a Website" rap that used to stream in the background of www.ryan-adams.com (one of the most bizarre, brilliant sites on all the interwebs, by the way)?

Ryan Adams' Myspace has a very cool little interview/review of "Easy Tiger", written by #1 Fan Stephen King.

It was, Ryan Adams says, this girl he's been spending time with; the title of this album is her fault. "She wanted to go out to dinner at eight; I wanted to go right away. She said, 'Easy, Tiger.' And that hit me. It stuck with me to the point where I called up Neal [that would be Neal Casal, guitarist of The Cardinals] and left a message on his answering machine with those two words. 'Don't forget this,' I said, 'cause I want to use it.' "

Adams laughs and adds, "I think he's still got that message."

And I understand that. Some things you just save, because they're worth playing over again.

I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful—the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

He agrees that the tone of Easy Tiger is different — not dark, just different—and suggests in passing that it may have something to do with both sobering up and growing up (he's 32). Then he goes on to talk about the process, which is clearly something close to his heart. "I write on a manual typewriter," he says. "I get up, I have a cup of coffee, I sit down at the typewriter. I never spent a useless day behind a typewriter."

I say amen to that, but he's already going on.

"It's like—I don't know, sometimes it's like chasing a pretty girl on the beach. And things I never thought I could do...I can do."

I mention how prolific he is, aware that I might be touching a sore point. After all, there are plenty of critics who seem to think that's a bad thing. Adams, however, just laughs.

"Yeah, yeah, in America people give you shit for working hard," he says. "But...it's process, that's all. I process things. I went into the dream business. If people need 'em, I've got extra."

He talks enthusiastically about all the unreleased material he hopes to set free in a box set, maybe at the end of the year ("If people hear it all, then they'll get the connections," he says), but that's then. Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

In other words—easy, Tiger.

New Ryan Adams album coming out in October.  The selling point is that he actually spent time and effort writing and recording it, which is a weird thing to be a selling point, but Ryan Adams is weird that way.  I actually liked Cardinalogy quite a bit, even if few of the songs were particularly memorable, but III/IV was mostly a waste.  This one I'm excited for.

Lucky Now (http://soundcloud.com/ryanadams/lucky-now), off the new album.  Mellow and melodic and great.  Sounds like something off the Follow the Lights EP.

Yeah, he's playing a a string of acoustic shows here in California and I've got tickets for a couple of them.  I've enjoyed him since the Whiskeytown-era and, while some of his recent efforts have left me a bit cold, I always find a song or two to love even on his lesser albums.

Last time I saw him was right before he disbanded the Cardinals as a touring band... which was sad to hear because I was surprised how great they were together. I've seen him plenty of times with varying lineups and the Cardinals contributed immense to one of the best shows I've seen him play.

I'm excited, too. I even listened to LIH straight through last night - it still plays like 2 EPs or a double album, but I like all the songs. I saw him in Dallas on the Cardinology tour and it was incredible. No opener and they played a long set with no breaks I think. That album didn't represent their great live sound though. I didn't go for the metal album or 3/4. I wonder if his marriage to Mandy has made him focus more? He hasn't lost his fanbase though. He will get 500 responses quickly on any Facebook post it seems.

I don't know if I want to spring for those deluxe preorders or not. I don't know how interesting the 3-D photos will be or how many Pax-AM Bucks you get.

New Ryan Adams album coming out in September. I'm desperate for another truly great album from the dude.

Thoughts on the song: the song itself is all right, not particular memorable lyrically or melodically, but solid and catchy. Mostly I'm pleased that he seems to have put forth the effort in both the production and his vocal performance, which are the two things that seem to fallen by the wayside on his past few albums. The closest comparison to his previous work is probably Cardinology, but with a more polished, less "first-take" sound. And not completely forgettable in the way that pretty much all of Ashes & Fire was.

I've really liked the songs I've heard off the new album, but I also just listened the "1984" EP, and it's fucking fantastic. Ryan channeling his inner Hüsker Dü over a 10-track, half-hour album. It might be pastiche, but it stands up as a brilliant example of the style it's emulating.

I've seen that YouTube link on probably 5 official music news websites. He may have linked it on his Twitter even. I'm pretty sure that's a bootleg stream, and from what I've read, it plays the album twice, so it's really about 15 mins long. I guess the Vevo logo on the screen grab and the word 'Official' is fooling everybody. These damn 7" selling out is pissing me off. The Jacksonville one, with 3 non album tracks, doesn't come out until next week and Amazon already says unavailable.

1984 is available to buy digitally now, on iTunes at any rate. And you're right, the whole album is about 15 minutes long; I wasn't paying close enough attention when I wrote that.

A lot of legit music websites are promoting it as 30 mins, too.
It was released physically on 7" and those can't even hold that much music.

Just re-read the thread. If you've followed his new interviews just this week, a lot of the same subjects were brought up and cleared up.

Because Lost Highway decided to release Demolition, it will probably prevent the unreleased album box set from ever coming out. He owns all the unreleased stuff, but he can't put out the complete sessions because Universal owns the tracks on Demolition. I would think they would work with him, because that would mean more money for them, but maybe because of the sour relationship he doesn't want to work with them?

I finally gave Rock n Roll another chance, and I have been enjoying it.

Of course, now there is a new $100,000 unreleased album he recorded with the Glyn Johns after Ashes & Fire that he didnt want to release because he was doing what the producer want him to do and it just wasn't what he wanted to put out.

Also sounds like he will release an album called Blackhole that has never leaked - the last album he wrote while still on drugs.

I have a feeling he has no intention of ever working with Lost Highway again. From the sounds of things, those bridges are well burned. I don't see any reason he couldn't just release a box set of the complete recordings minus the tracks that were on Demolition. If people want those songs, they already have Demolition.

So I'm pretty sure this Taylor Swift cover album is my favorite thing Ryan Adams has recorded in the past decade. There are a couple misses ("I Know Places" and "Bad Blood", specifically), but the high points are so fucking high.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Qco-5S8660
Adams took the most bubblegummy pop song off of Taylor Swift's album and turned it into an achingly sincere rock song. It's perfect. I could listen to this song endlessly. Probably his best vocal performance since the 29 album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVCme_D7pV4
One of Swift's best songs in its original version, Adams keeps it fairly faithful, most notably turning the modern pop hook in the chorus into this beautiful Roy Orbison falsetto bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhSbDHhwM7k
Probably the worst song on Swift's album, and he turns it into a lost Heartbreaker track. You feel the bass in the bottom of your gut; it's awesome.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwmXO0J-PAA
Ryan Adams is a goddamn wizard.

I agree. It's my favorite thing from him in a decade. The weakest songs for me are the ones where the lyrics seem to be strettttching the most to fit into his style (Blank Space, Bad Blood) but he definitely improves on some of her weakest songs (Welcome To New York, Clean) and makes them some of his best. I like "I Know Places" but agree it doesn't touch hers, my faves are Wildest Dreams, Style and especially This Love which includes the emotional high point of the entire album "When you're young, you run!" (x3)
Title: Re: any ryan adams fans?
Post by: polkablues on October 26, 2015, 04:21:54 PM
I don't think he ever cracked the code to I Know Places. What makes the original song work so well is that dynamic shift between the tense, driving minor-key verses and the big, open major-key chorus; it creates this great sense of pessimism building and building and then just getting shoved aside by optimism. Ryan Adams' version keeps the minor/major shift, but you never get a sense that it knows why it's doing it.

Contrast that to songs like All You Had to Do Was Stay or This Love, where it feels like Adams understands the meaning and intention of the song on a far deeper level than Taylor Swift does.

Yeah, that's what I really like about it. Once you get over him changing some of the inflections and timing of the best bits, you realize it's because he's not doing this ironically but because he really internalized the songs and spit them out as legitimate Ryan Adams songs. (Reading the backstory about him playing it endlessly while he was going through his divorce and how he thinks this'll be a legit-fan favorite like Love Is Hell makes it even better.)

There was a very lively discussion/debate of this on Slate's Culture Gabfest. Highly recommend listening to it. Starts at 16:48.

http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/culturegabfest/2015/09/slate_s_culture_gabfest_on_how_to_get_away_with_murder_ryan_adams_1989_and.html

This touches on 2 issues that are gradually becoming pet peeves of mine:

Their guest (Jody Rosen) has a thing about musical authenticity being a myth. I think he tries to bring it up in every conversation. Annoying. Can we really not say that some artists are less authentic and more performative than others? He likes to throw the whole issue out because "the concept of musical authenticity is ahistorical." Such a weirdly black and white position for a journalist to take.

Three out of four of the people in the conversation are smart about this, thankfully, but it's still a deeply bothersome issue: There is a surprising amount of skepticism about Taylor Swift's authorship and her control over her own destiny, despite all the evidence to the contrary. It strikes me that people don't believe she can actually write her own songs or be a savvy businessperson because she's a pretty girl.

A calculator from the mid 80s could write her songs. She is appalling, and the continued lauding of her talent is baffling. I mean I wouldn't willingly listen to Lady Gaga, but I recognise that she has talent and intelligence and that it's kind of cool that something that mildly weird got such mainstream acceptance. Swift's stuff is just 90s cheese repackaged for kids that were too young to get into Spice Girls. Don't get it.

Listen, I don't think either of us fall in her demographic, and I'm not exactly a big fan. But I think her talent (songwriting included) is in fact undeniable, and I'm happy that she's successful. Lady Gaga on the other hand is insufferable and ("Born This Way" aside) has been a corrosive force in culture; it doesn't please me that she was ever famous.

It's been pretty clear for a while that Ryan Adams is an asshole on a lot of levels, but his music meant enough to me that I tried really hard for a long time to look past it, and to assume the worst rumors about his treatment of women were exaggerated. I'm done with that now.
