Isn't the wonder of PTA that he doesn't do genre? People calling PDL a 'romantic comedy' resulted in much confusion, I fear. Plus it makes me itchy.

He said he'd make a western, so I'm expecting that..

...and what about the strange ambitions to do animation? Is that gone?

Documentary of a small music club, an oasis of sorts.  Or a documentary of an unknown band, still holding on, but with no chance of succeeding...like Big Sister from Woodstock.

(my Parker Posey /  Bijou Phillips lesbian porn idea just never materialized)

PTA should stick to whatever he wants to do ...Fuck the box office.  The majority of movies that make the most money suck anyways. Like lord of the rings. A movie ive never seen and never will.

You know, PTA doesnt pay for the movies himself, so I think box office is sort of important. I do agree that most of the movies that make the most money are bad and I despised Lord of the Rings.

From Greg's site:

The BBC profiles "Ten Directors to Watch" & PTA made their list. Ignore the "Staggering Genius" tidbit (they're wrong).

Paul Thomas Anderson
After the operatic grandeur of his Boogie Nights/Magnolia double whammy, Hollywood’s most name-checked director returns with the slightly more modest Punch-Drunk Love (out 07 February). Sending Adam Sandler’s career in a whole new direction with this beautiful, erratic (you heard that right) homage to love, alien harmoniums, phone sex and spontaneous rages, he provides us with an exhilarating, joyous hour and a half. Next, PTA has ideas for an animated film and a musical, and his name has been attached to helm an adaptation of Dave Eggers’ A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius.

I think a PTA Thriller would be great.  The violent scenes in his movies are done so well.  I think he could really put together a *gasp* thrilling thriller.

Who else thinks that PTA could make a really awesome and spectacular action movie? Unlike anyother. Truly, how dazzling was the 'raining frog' sequence in 'Magnolia' or the 'beat and chase' sequence look in 'PDL' etc. The dark look and whirlwind cinematography of his films mixed with that real tension and anxiety could make for such a cool action flick. I liked how he said (in that Total Film interview) that he wants to tackle all genres, Western and horror ('a real terror movie') were mentioned. He could definately make a real freaky, chill-you-to-the-bone horror flick ('PDL' had a creepy atmosphere in certain scenes). He could probably pull off any genre without breaking a sweat. Okay, I'll stop kissin' his ass.....

A P.T.Anderson action picture.

I can dream for the meantime.

Knowing his love of musicals, I think it would be really great if he aimed for one of those next....with Julianne Moore as the leading lady and....well, who knows who the leading man would be...
I read some earlier posts about him writing and filming an action flick....That would be fucking great too....Later everyone

This guy can pull anything he sets his mind for, I'm sure some people remember that in some interview he said that he wanted to make a 90 minutes romantic comedy or something like that, what really called my attention is that he claimed that he knew how to do that, what I'm trying to say here is, how he knew? Because he's a natural, in a way like Kubrick, a guy who learned by himself, never went to film school, and was born to do that; for me there's no question that whatever he does he'll do fine.

The only other young filmaker that (IMO) comes close to him is spanish director Alejandro Amenabar, that guy not only directs and writes also does the score of his films, he is a guy to look for.

As for PTA just hope he tackles every genre.

I'd like to see anything but a sequel, a pre 1920's period piece, animation, or a documentary/mockumentary. Anything but those and I'm as happy and excited as can be. I guess it would be cool to see him do an animation somewhere along the line but not now. He's just so good with people, real people...I can't help but think that his visual style would be hurt by the animation. There are just so many possibilities, I'm not even ready to hear what he's going to do next.

I'll see it in theatres at least twice no matter what it turns out to be of course...even if its a fucking animated documentary on tom arnold...pta can do no wrong.

So I guess I don't really care what kind of movie he does at all then...as long as it comes out soon. I want John C. Reilly back though...and Thomas Jane in the lead role. Johnny Depp too... and Audrey Tautou and Zooey Deschanel!

Wait, maybe not...if he puts Audrey Tautou and Zooey Deschanel on screen at the same time in front of his fucking camera...I swear to god the camera will explode instantly. As soon as he says "action"...that camera will be completely gone.

Picking up on an earlier post, I think it would be tremendous if he did a full-fledged Musical.....with a great ensemble cast.....it would be one of the most talked-about movie events to ever hit screens in a long time....

Anyone care to speculate who he would use? John C. Reilly would have to be in it (and we know he can dance and sing a bit since he kicked ass in Chicago....)...but think about Julianne Moore and (lol) Phillip Baker Hall....god that would be so fucking great to watch....just to name a few. Everyone should drop their picks on the thread and see what we come up with!!!!!!!!!!

See, the way I see it about PTA's eventual musical is that it won't be with Hollywood's best singers.. its going to be "Everybody Says I Love You" mixed with "Nashville" in my view.

Reilly and Moore would be locks I would say.. and I would expect some unexpected people to show up... perhaps Henry Gibson?

"We must be doing something right to last.. two-hundred years..."

b/c I just don't like the majority of musicals.  I've always enjoyed seeing a Musical on stage, but I think a Musical on film is just...a hacked version of the stage version.
All the wonder and skill of the performances are gone.

Alright so I picked action. Really only because no one else had, but hey the car wreaks in PDL were great and so was Sandler beating down the brothers. So how about a PTA movie with a whole bunch of car wreaks and fighting. And then some more car wreaks, oh yeah, you can't have too many car wreaks.

Keep Well,
Dan

What he needs to do is Boogie Nights 0.5... er, Boogie Days. It's the prequel to Boogie Nights, telling of a young filmmaker named Jack Horner and his dream to make the great American porno. When he's working in a club, he's discovered by a middle-aged money bag named the Colonel James and... well, I guess you know the score.

Younger versions of most of the BN characters (ie, the discovery of Buck, Amber, and Reed, and a young Peurto Rican immigrant with the dreams of starting a club, etc.) No Dirk or Rollergirl in this one though.

How about going waaaaaaay back. Assuming that Jack Horner is 55 in 1980 (that might be a tad too old, but we can fudge it). .... Let's go back to 1943 and put an 18-year-old Jack Horner in World War II. We'll see the injury that made him walk funny. We'll see him witness that horrors of wartime, and find love on the side.

Then flash forward to Horner failing at every post-war entreprenurial effort during the 1950s, before finally finding his niche in porn during the mid-60s.

The movie should end on New Year's Eve, 1969.

That's the part of Jack's life I want to know about. ...

If the age really doesn't work, plunk Jack down in the Korean War instead of WW2.

Well, considering the deep, rich personal histories that PTA hints at in his movies, one could try write a book about how Sydney, Floyd, Jack, Jimmy, the Colonel and Earl all knew each other when they were younger. How they met, how they went their separate ways, how there are some horrible, haunting things that will always link them.

Or is that too creepy, and kind of like putting Chewbacca and C3-PO in Episode III?
Title: PTA genre
Post by: adolfwolfli on September 18, 2003, 02:22:44 PM
I'd have to say my FIRST choice would be a horror movie for him.  The genre has been in steady decline since the late 80s, and if anyone can rescue it it would be Paul.  We really need an antidote to this modern, PG-13, zero gore, Dawson's Creek-meets-Scream style horror movie that's currently being churned out in Hollywood.

I dream of a PTA horror movie...it would be like John Carpenter, but good.  Widescreen, shocking, totally unexpected.  It would be surreal and mulitfaceted.

I mean, some of the more shocking moments in PDL (window smash, car crashes, etc.) are already verging on horror.  I think it would be great to take that even further.  Some sort of multi-character tale of the supernateral or something...

Other than that, I don't know about a musical...but I would definitely see it if he made one.

No matter what he makes it would still be a PTA picture, regardless, so...

I want to see his spin on a pyshological horror film badly...

What would it be about?

It's anyone's bet, PTA always surprises us...but I'm sure Phillip Baker Hall, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, and/or Shaq would be in it.
