nightcrawler hits that sweet spot between telling a thrilling, original story and artfully conveying messages about what we're doing and where we're going. it has a lot to say and it says it in the most entertaining manner possible. the way the pieces build and come together.. i found myself wondering why i'd never seen this kind of story before. it feels like a new classic.
gyllenhaal is out of this world. he plays this creep with such vigour and conviction. similar to dicaprio in wolf of wall, he actually manages to make a case for his philosophy and gusto as inspiring in some way. even though it's objectively horrible in so many other ways.
my only reservation about nightcrawler is i'm not sure i'll love it quite as much upon rewatch because i know what's coming, but first viewings don't get much better than this.
Red Band Trailer:
"Hangover" type of a trailer. I dislike one-liners in trailers or posters, still vibe is very different from previous trailers - satire all over the place.
I thought this was very good. A "smaller" film than I was expecting, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Gyllenhaal carries the thing. It's his best performance by a mile. He's electrifying. Like Picolas said, he manages to make a despicable person downright inspiring.
I found myself smiling or laughing quite a bit--there's plenty of black comedy to enjoy--but it was kind of embarrassing to be the only one laughing. Did the comedy fall flat, or did the audience just not get the joke? I guess that's the same thing, really.

I think that's because it's the story of a sociopath who gets everything he wants without paying much of a price. There aren't enough turns of character or obstacles that he overcomes that makes Lew's story a real journey. It's just a straight line. There were moments where I was definitely captivated, like the sequence where he films the mansion, but even that I think is fuelled by an impending doom (the police showing up/him getting caught) that eventually isn't delivered. The lack of any real danger makes the film feel a bit off. I want to feel at least a little bit connected to him, or just see him actively do something where we see the consequences of his actions are felt.
Rene Russo's character is also plotted horribly conveniently. She exits purely to progress Lew's story, and to act as a sounding board for his fucked up philosophy. Does she do anything other than give into his demands at every step of the way? Ted from Breaking Bad also just kinda stands around and does nothing.
I guess the film's perspective is ruthlessness and lack of empathy are key to success in this world? Even Bill Paxton, who's a total asshole and trying to fuck over Lew, still shows signs of weakness and emotionality that allow him to get taken advantage of.
Still, Gyllenhaal is pretty incredible. I mostly thought about what makes playing a sociopathic character so much fun for actors, because he looks like he's having a blast on screen.
really dug this. it seems to have a bit of a difficult time reconciling tones (straight thriller vs dark, semi-comical portrayal of sociopathy) and thought it could've delivered a stronger ending but this is expertly crafted and incredibly well acted. a very handsome films that makes you feel very bad, but so thoroughly engaged and entertained. robert elswitt's work is exceptional once again. gyllenhaal's performance is profoundly disturbed/disturbing.
