okay,  i just re-watched this movie FINALLY last nite for the first time since the theatres and enjoyed it a lot more now that i had an idea of what was going on, and it did really seem to make sense.  i cant believe i didnt figure it all out before.  but, what i'm wondering, is if anybody has any idea about a few things.

-What had been filmed for the tv pilot, and what was re-shot or added after it was not picked up and decided to be made into a film?  What sorts of changes were made (other than obviously the nudity), to the story?

-Also i noticed that the production really did seem more tv show, than a theatrical film, i'm a little surprised as to how much praise this movie gets due to its pretty simplistic style.  What was the budget on this bastard anyway?

-And my girlfriend had to discuss this movie in school and her teacher had said something about the creepy guy in the alley being one of the central figures of the show if it had been picked up.  some sort of devil type figure playing with the fates of the people in the town.  anybody heard anything like that?

i read through the mullholland threads and didnt see any explanation for any of this, so does anybody want to help shed some light on this, (macguffin)?
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Lynch's Picture Factory joined with Imagine Television in association with Touchstone Television to produce a two-hour ABC pilot titled "Mulholland Drive." ABC passed on it for the fall 99 season. The reason was due to the violence in the pilot (the decision came in the wake of the Colorado shootings). With all the political pressure out now for Hollywood to clean things up it seems ABC got scared and passed on it. Lynch told Premiere magazine, "All I know is, I loved making it, ABC hated it, and I don't like the cut I turned in. I agreed with ABC that the longer cut was too slow, but I was forced to butcher it because we had a deadline, and there wasn't time to finesse anything. It lost texture, big scenes, and storylines, and there are 300 tape copies of the bad version circulating around. Lots of people have seen it, which is embarrassing, because they're bad-quality tapes, too. I don't want to think about it."

The ensemble drama was to explore the desires and fears of two women beset by a mystery in Los Angeles. Cast members included Ann Miller (Coco), Dan Hedaya, Naomi Watts, Laura Harring (Rita), Gary Dowdan, Justin Thoreaux (Adam Kersher), Robert Forester, Billy Ray Cyrus (Gene) and Michael Anderson (Mr. Roque). Lynch was also trying to lure actress Helen Mirren from Great Britain to be in the series. Marilyn Manson was also to make cameos in the series when time permitted.

About the Manson cameos: was he to be dressed as he normally dresses when performing and in public?  Or something more "normal" (for lack of a better word).  Or did things not proceed that far.  I know how Lynch loves to use musicians in his stuff.  That sure would've been interesting, either way.

Things never got that far and I haven't found any info about what he was to play. But Lynch did use Manson in the porn film that plays in "Lost Highway".

well i just answered one of my own questions...

Originally filmed in 1999 on a budget of $8 million as a made-for-TV pilot, new scenes were filmed one year later on a $7 million budget given by the French film studio Studio Canal to wrap up the open ending which had been left unresolved in the original version so that a TV series could follow.

budget = $15 million

Did anybody catch the Godard reference at the end? The very last line or word before the credits is the opera women singing and she says "Silencio`" Godards film Contempt ends with Fritz Lang saying "Silencio`" on the set of the film he is shooting. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Did I just get cock-blocked by Bob Saget?

It's a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway.

One of Lynch's 10 clues is "Can you hear the name of the film they're casting for? do you hear it again?". Ok, so I heard it once, but I can't understand it and the subtitles don't cover that line and I've listened to it about twenty times! It's right as camilla rodhes is wlking into the booth when she sings, some one says "........... story, take one", so the title is "- something- story", does anyone understand it?
