i'm still sifting my way through his catalog (it's pretty big)...but i do love Rust Never Sleeps, Zuma is great (danger bird is one of his best songs), and i guess on the whole, Cortez the Killer is my all-time favorite...takes me my back to my earliest listens of Decade...one of the best greatest hits-like compilations that i've ever heard, if only for it's unique subject....he is a legend and a revolutionary, and ultimately as uncompromising an artist as their ever was....i think after a few days though i see that this is not much a Neil crowd...(sigh)

by the way Mogwai i never knew that Neil's brother was in Fight Club, i'll have to check it out later on my dvd

no, i haven't gotten a hold of Year of the Horse...i checked it out on Amazon,  no dvd for it, and the video out of stock...i own his Rust Never Sleeps dvd, a tour where he did a little bit of a concept show...the Crazy Horse and all the stage hands were dressed up like the Jawas from Star Wars...it's interesting that Jarmusch and Neil worked together, i never knew that....actually did Jarmusch direct Dead Man? i know that Neil did the soundtrack for that one.

yeah jarmush directed dead man. its strange that amazon doesnt have the year of the horse dvd. amazon.ca has it, but thats the canadian version without the "b-reel" stuff.

Post by: moonshiner on April 05, 2003, 11:37:45 AM
yes i might could do that for ya...i think it all was mainly Neil was just a big fan of Star Wars at the time, as far as for the Jawas, or what he called his Road-eyes (roadies)...the concept of the show was to show Neil coming alive, i.e getting fame, and then by the end of the show burning out...or fading away...everyone in the audience were given 3-D glasses (dubbed Rust-O-Vision glasses for the show) to greater enhance the sight of Neil's supposed decay...i love how the show opens with the Beatles' "A Day in the Life"....puts an eerie beginning to the set.

Quote from: mogwaiI love the way how Neil starts playing the song "Sugar Mountain", very spontaneous....I like the acoustic stuff more than the electric stuff.

The acoustic, folky stuff is what really sparked my interest in Neil, "Sugar Mountain" was really my first favorite song, listening to his Decade album. Really love songs about innocence and its loss.
As i got older and more into his thing, his electric stuff really got to me...have you heard Danger Bird, or Cortez the Killer, or some of his classics like Down by the River, or especially Cowgirl in the Sand? Just curious what electric stuff of Neil's that you didn't like.

oh and a little bit of an aside, have you ever heard Pearl Jam's "I Got Id"?
Neil played guitar for that song, and you probably know about Neil Young and Pearl Jam's collaboration on Mirror Ball, as hush-hush a fiasco that was.

Quote from: mogwai"Long Road" which they wrote during the Mirrorball session. What's wrong with that album?

I'm also a huge Pearl Jam fan, i guess i heard when that album came out there was a controversy with Neil and Pearl Jam's respective record companies, but i'm having a hard time finding something on the internet to back that up...i actually haven't heard much off of Mirror Ball though, but what i heard was pretty good.  "I Got Shit," there i said it.

About Neil and electric stuff, anyone interested should download "Danger Bird". It's amazing....about the "rusty" guitar, Neil takes Old Black wherever he goes and welcomes its imperfections and distorted sound, kind of a revolutionary as far as distortion feedback noise goes.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=18171&cf=229

the gist of the article is that the concept of the album is going to be very anti-war with the central theme being about conservation of the environment....movie sounds like it's going to be crazy with frequent appearances by the devil(unfortunately i don't think they were able to get Christopher Walken), being that it's coming packaged with the cd i don't think it'll be very long and will be quite low budget.

jokerspath what are the supposed bonus tracks you've heard from On the Beach?

and Pas Rapport the album was recorded with the Crazy Horse, so you're definitely not going to get his Harvest/Harvest Moon/Silver and Gold stuff...but we could get something like Rust Never Sleeps  :o ...although we wouldn't be talking about this if not for Neil's utter unpredictability.

Oh, sorry.  Didn't mean to imply that the upcoming OTB release will have bonus tracks.

Whoever made the bootleg put on 8 extra songs, versions of songs like Campaigner and Pocohantas that I've never heard, along with a few others that I really dig (they have titles and stuff, but I forgot to look when I was home last night).  I'm sure any Neil Young freak would know where these come from or something and if they're like rare or readily available, but I'm just happy to have them...

update on the dvd to come packaged with Greendale, it's going to be a concert dvd with him performing the Greendale set, from what i've read these Greendale introductory shows have featured a lot of explanation of what the story is behind the music, he has released new tour dates and the shows are going to bring back shades of the rock opera, Who style...the full length movie i spoke of before will be released later on in the year, on dvd.

Was scrolling through the pages to make sure I wasn't going to double post about another topic, but when I saw a "Rust Never Sleeps" page, I had to chime in this insane story (dunno if anyone's heard this or not, apologies in advance):

Okay.  Swear to God, I'm not making this up, though the story itself might be as 'questionable' as it's narrator, but it's still pretty amusing anyway.  The person who told me this was Kimmy Robertson (Lucy the secretary from "Twin Peaks").  She's an... interesting character to say the least.  Her story: Back in the day, before Devo really took off, Mark Mothersbaugh lived in an apartment building that his parents owned in Akron, OH.  In exchange for free rent, he was the building's super/handyman.  He took such pride in the job, he would wear a worn jumpsuit and an ape mask whenever he had to make the rounds.  Neil Young came through town on tour, and visited the building because Mark's brother (name escapes me) invented a electric drum set of sorts and wanted to check it out.  The group was hanging out and playing music when at 3AM, Mark got a call because someone was having problems with their pipes and wanted them fixed.  Neil said to blow it off and stay, why go now?  Wait 'till the morning.  Mark threw on the jumpsuit and ape mask and said... "Rust Never Sleeps."

As I said, pretty outlandish.  I'd like to believe it's true.  Kimmy insisted it was b/c she knew Mothersbaugh, so who knows.  But there you have it.

EDIT: Grammar and nonsense.

Neil Young Recovering From Brain Aneurysm

NEW YORK - Neil Young was treated for a brain aneurysm this week and remains hospitalized, although doctors expect a full recovery, his publicist said Friday.

The 59-year-old rocker underwent a procedure to treat it Tuesday night at a New York hospital, where he was expected to remain for a few more days, publicist Bob Merlis told The Associated Press.

Dr. Pierre Gobin, who performed the procedure with another doctor, said: "Mr. Young had a dangerous brain aneurysm and was treated successfully by the minimally invasive neuroradiology team here. He is now resting comfortably ... but we strongly recommend that he not travel for several days."

Young had been expected to perform Sunday at the Juno Awards — the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys.

"I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to make it to Winnipeg for the Junos as I had hoped. I grew up there and was really looking forward to the show as well as spending some time with my old friends and family," Young said. "Thanks to my doctors, I'm feeling a lot better now so I hope I can get a rain check."

The aneurysm was discovered when Young's vision became blurry after attending the March 14 induction ceremonies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Merlis said. An examination by a neurologist detected the aneurysm and the procedure was scheduled.

The veteran rocker is expected to resume normal activities soon. But for now, Merlis said, "He's got to take it easy."

Neil Young writes anti-war album

Veteran singer Neil Young has recorded an anti-war protest album on which he reportedly lashes out at George W Bush in a song called Impeach the President.

The Canadian star has described Living with War as "metal folk protest".

The title track includes lyrics such as: "On the flat-screen we kill and we're killed again. And when the night falls, I pray for peace."

Young is one of rock's most political artists, thanks to classic anthems such as Rockin' in the Free World and Ohio.

The 10 tracks on Living with War were recorded earlier in April and feature a 100-strong choir, the singer said on his website.

'Remember peace'

On the title track, he sings: "In the mosques and the doors of the old museum, I take a holy vow, to never kill again, try to remember peace.

"The rocket's red glare, bombs bursting in the air, give proof through the night that our flag is still there."

Young has not confirmed details of the other tracks, but there are widespread reports that he makes a more direct attack on President Bush in Impeach the President.

The new material comes 36 years after the star became an icon for the anti-war movement with Ohio, his response to the deaths of four students during a Vietnam war protest.

Neil Young urges Bush impeachment on protest album

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Veteran rocker Neil Young has recorded a protest album featuring an anti-Iraq war track with "a holy vow to never kill again" and a song titled "Let's Impeach the President," the singer said on Monday.

The 10-track set, called "Living with War," was recorded this month by a "power trio" -- electric guitar, bass and drums -- plus trumpet and a 100-member choir, the Canadian-born musician announced on his Web site.

Young's longtime manager, Elliot Roberts, told Reuters the album, which has been the subject of Internet buzz for several days, will be played for executives at his label, Warner Music Group's Reprise Records, on Tuesday.

Reprise spokesman Bill Bentley said Young's latest effort, which he spent about three days recording, came as a surprise.

"We didn't know he was making a record," Bentley said. "That's the beauty of Neil Young."

Young, 60, is the latest in a string of big-name recording stars to take musical aim at President Bush and his conduct of the war in the Iraq. Others have included Steve Earle ("Rich Man's War"), Willie Nelson ("What Ever Happened to Peace on Earth") and the Rolling Stones ("Sweet Neo Con").

But "Living with War," coming from one of the most influential and iconoclastic singer-songwriters of Young's generation, may be the most heavy-hitting anti-Bush protest yet to surface from a major rock star.

In a message crawl along the bottom of his Web site, www.neilyoung.com, Young drew parallels to two of the leading protest singers of the 1960s, saying of his new record: "I think it is a metal version of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan ... metal folk protest?"

The crawl goes on to reveal the lyrics of the album's title track, with such lines as: "I raise my hand in peace ... I never bow to the laws of the thought police ... I take a holy vow ... to never kill again ...

"In the big hotels ... in the mosques and the doors of the old museum ... I take a holy vow ... to never kill again."

Roberts confirmed that a separate song on the album is titled "Let's Impeach the President." He declined to disclose any further details about the record.

But according to some online reports, that song accuses Bush of "lying" and features a rap with the president's voice set against a choir singing "flip-flop."

One member of that choir, a California-based musician, wrote on a "blog" entry last Friday that the recording session wrapped with an a capella version of "America the Beautiful."

Young's latest offering comes just seven months after the release of his last album, "Prairie Wind," which has sold about 450,000 U.S. copies as of last week, according to sales tracking service Nielsen SoundScan. Music from that album was featured in the recent concert film "Neil Young: Heart of Gold," directed by Jonathan Demme.

"Living with War" appears to bring Young full circle from a more pro-Bush administration stance he took in the months following the September 11 attacks.

Not long after recording the song "Let's Roll," a tribute to passengers who apparently fought back against hijackers on doomed United Airlines Flight 93 over Pennsylvania, Young came out publicly in support of the U.S. Patriot Act.

The legislation, which gave law enforcement authorities broad new powers aimed at bolstering the administration's war on terror, was harshly criticized by some as threatening civil liberties.

But at a December 2001 ceremony accepting an award from the free-speech advocacy group People for the American Way, Young said he believed the measure was necessary, though he urged the audience to ensure that its more controversial provisions were only temporary.

"Living with War" is hardly the first work by Young to take on the political establishment. As part of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, in 1970, Young wrote and recorded the song "Ohio," about the four Kent State University students killed by National Guard troops during an anti-Vietnam war rally.

Nearly two decades later, he book-ended his album "Freedom" with the song "Rockin' in the Free World," which chided Bush's father, then president, with the lyrics: "We got a thousand points of light/For the homeless man/We got a kinder, gentler machine-gun hand."

Neil Young anti-war album - full details unveiled

Look out George W Bush!

A full tracklisting and biting lyrics have emerged of Neil Young's forthcoming album 'Living With War' - and it seems that as had been reported the entire record is a concept album about the policies of George W Bush at home and abroad.

According to the website Down With Tyranny, which claims to have been given a personal playback of the record by Young's manager Elliott Roberts, the album was written and recorded in nine days following a conversation the singer had about the politics of the Bush administration with Steve Bing, a film producer friend who funds radical causes in America and recently donated $10 million to a study of global warming.

The political tone is set by opening track 'After the Garden', which kicks off with the lyrics : "Won't need no shadow man runnin' the government." It's followed by the title track, which incorporates part of 'The Star Spangled Banner' as Jimi Hendrix famously did at Woodstock in 1969.

'Shock And Awe' refers directly to the bombing of Baghdad with the lyrics: "Back in the days of shock and awe, thousands of children scarred for life/ Millions of tears for a soldier's wife, both sides are losing now."

'Flags of Freedom' returns to the theme with the lines: "Today is the day our younger son is going off to war."

'The Restless Consumer' is built around the refrain "Don't need no more lies" while 'Let's Impeach The President' is even more forthright, with the words: "Let's impeach the president for lying, misleading our country into war/Abusing all the power that we gave him and shipping all our money out the door."

Other titles include 'Lookin' For A Leader' and 'Families' and the album ends with another Iraq song, 'Roger and Out', which includes a 100-piece choir singing 'America The Beautiful'.

No release date has yet been set but given the topical nature of the material Young is said to want the album out before the summer, and is also reportedly considering streaming the songs on the Internet.

The full tracklisting is:

'After The Garden'
'Living With War'
'The Restless Consumer'
'Shock And Awe'
'Families'
'Flags Of Freedom'
'Let's Impeach The President'
'Lookin' For A Leader'
'Roger And Out'

friend was like "if i buy you a ticket will you see Neil Young with me" and i kind of stared at him for a moment so anyway the next day there we were and this other friend said "i'm with three virgins" because three of us hadn't seen Neil Young before but he had and most people have and we were in the nose-bleeds, i sat behind a couple who would sometimes do the most adorable things, for example one time the guy started clapping and clapped for a bit then she clapped with him and listen this is at The Forum it's a stadium there are thousands of people and somehow through this clapping excursion in the midst of mellow Young fans these two people were the only two people clapping during this particular scene, which is absurd but i think adorable because i want someone who will clap with me when no one else is clapping, also i fell asleep now and then, security shined a light inside my friend's cig pack, which is half cigs and half joints, security upon entering pointed their flashlight at his joints he smiled security smiled we took two trips to smoke two joints during this concert, and we were so far away basically i could see Neil standing there on stage and a screen showed me his face or body behavior or someone else playing an instrument, i'd said i'd wanted to hear a song from On the Beach then the encore was Vampire Blues, nice, he's kind of funny too and Social Distortion was the opening we skipped them,

seeing Neil Young live is now checked off my bucket list.
