Title: Avatar Association
Post by: ᾦɐļᵲʊʂ on February 10, 2005, 09:04:10 PM
Since I started posting here, subconsciously I've been associating people with a certain avatar they had for a while, or for some reason got stuck in my head (whether you have it now, have had it for a while, or have never changed it)

I don't have the pics now, but I can at least describe them, which I think from there, you'll be able to know what I'm talking about...

Gold Trumpet - the Throne of Blood cover

Jeremy Blackman - the shadow of Adam Sandler running in PDL

Regular Karate - Big Lebowski Region 2 cover

Pubrick - The moving bee

cbrad - the kid from Sigur Ros' ( ) album

Cinephile - Mr. T

Stefen - The Ant

GDIDM - Kurt Russell

ono - the Critic

Withnail - Simon and Garfunkel

Gamblor - the tree in the Ring

Pas Rapport - in the spaghetti

sonowthen - Mean Streets

modernage02 - the Kill Bill collage

Macguffin - Falling Down (although I did particularly like your Se7en series)

NEON MERCURY - Mulholland Drive

Sleuth - Rorshack

Pedro - the llama

Those are the ones that come to mind... anyone else associate people with their avatars?

yes.  and its weird, before i knew what sorts of personalities most regular posters were i would feel differently about them when 'speaking' to them based on what avatar they had.  like, if i thought someone was being a jerk and they had a snobby avatar, i'd be like 'pfft.  what a jerk'.  but if they had like a hot chick avatar i'd be all like '....they're not all bad.  maybe they have a point.'

yo it true, robert towne once said that kurt russell is hollywood's best kept secret.  i couldn't agree more.

it's funny because that pic you have of him is perfect for a tag.  up here in toronto there is this graffiti artist/tagger that plasters up cut out pictures of val kilmer.  they're everywhere and they look fucking wicked awesome, it's been on the news and in the local papers.

you should start doing that wherever you live with that pic of Kurt, it has a similar vibe to the pic of val.  big trouble styles.

Alison didn't last very long on your avatar runway either. Girl can't catch a break.

Don't get me wrong, Allison is definitely high on the list of my one true loves.  But the animated one gave Lucid a headache:

I whipped this up in Photoshop the other day, and now it's my current Myspace profile pic.  It doesn't necessarily belong in this thread, since I have no intention of using it as my avatar here, but I think it's cool and I want to show it off, and this is close enough.

Warning: This post is long and it will take time to upload, but it's worth it I think.  :yabbse-undecided:

I've been planing to post this for a looong time, even years ago and always postponed it, but now inspired by the 'this place is dead' thread I decided to just do it, guess I was always looking for the right time to do it and never felt like it was.

I want this to have the feel of the old and now disappeared Blast from the Past thread, hope it brings good memories.

Also wanted the post to keep it shorter, and actually did keep it short! just bear in mind I chose these out of over 1500 avatars I've saved through all these years, yes I've saved almost every avatar that users have had, at least from the regulars, if somebody is not represented right now it's because I couldn't find a place for it.

I can't put the name of the xixaxer exactly below the avatars without making a mess so below the rows I'll write the name of the xaxers from left to right so you know who had it at that time.

Hope you like this, enjoy!

I have this one but I have a feeling it isn't the one you say, if that avatar is recent maybe I don't have it because for over a year haven't been able to save the avatars, for some odd reason I can't save them as gif, jpeg, png or whatever, even stopped trying to save them.  :yabbse-undecided:

And now that old avatar is gone for good because a day after I made the switch, my laptop crashed and all my files went along with it. The change is good because there is no reason to continue associating myself with a film I only somewhat like. The effect of having it was wearing on me.

now that cronopio's alive intermittently, maybe he can help me, or fernando if he knows..

one of crono's old avs was some kind of painting of a giant minotaur beast towering over a village.. can anyone tell me where that was from, who did it, anything? searches turn up nothing.. if it's a throwaway picture by a nobody that's cool too, i just would like to know.

i've been haunted by it all these years, in my memory it has come to represent an immensely creepy image. always when i see a mountain ridge in the distance, and i do often as my city is borded by a mountain range, i imagine this creature standing from the other side, looking so FIERCE. it really fascinates me.. i respond viscerally to the idea of it.

"The Colossus" by Fransisco Goya (actually not, as the museum it resides at recently declared that it was actually the work of one of Goya's assistants. http://www.vincesear.com/famous-goya-painting-found-to-be-unauthentic/ (http://www.vincesear.com/famous-goya-painting-found-to-be-unauthentic/))

haha yes, thanks! fuck i knew it was goya. i'm such a noob.. i went to bed thinking i would do a search for his name first thing in the morning.

well, not goya. but still that assistant is a mad cunt.

does that image freak anyone else out? i think the idea i remembered is even cooler than that cos it was a fucked up beast with its back to us but its head slightly turned. i dunno. my reaction to that picture is comparable to what the old couple feel when viewing The Kramer.

There you go!

This av is both hilarious and poignant. It catches the young bee in a moment of play that is transitory in experience but everlasting in the form of nostalgic memory.. the children and the bee together perform what could only be described as a time tripping rain dance. The short loop of the kids doubles within the longer loop of the bee which results in a dissolution of standard gif loop structure that is both refreshing and thought provoking.

still.. it's no boobies.

Thanks. I used the Camera+ (thanks to them!) app on my iPhone to alter it to create these wonderful colors.

Thanks, I've been pondering late nights over that. Now I have an excuse to tell my boss why I'm so tired at work.

yours is good. Home Alone is one of my favorite movies, but it's severely lacking in the boob department. Actually if you squint your eyes it looks like she has Orangutan titties  :yabbse-thumbup:

I didn't know the two were in direct competition, but I'm very happy to have won.

gifs as avatars seem dazzling. hot tip for interested parties: through google i know there's this
http://mubi.com/topics/movie-related-gifs-threador-whatever-gifs-you-want

and there are examples of dazzlers. also, tumblr dazzles. you can find a dazzler. and then the hottest tip of all is polkablues makes that for you when you ask, which i think is really sweet. i like my gas station, and i like dazzlers

Too large. It needs to be 250 pixels max. The built-in resizer can resize static images, but not animated gifs.

I've had the same av for 3 years, and I really love it, but I think it's time for a change. Big ups to polka for creating it. It's been so long since I chose a new one that I forgot how to make a gif into your avatar. Can I get some help with this one?

It has to be below certain dimensions and under a certain filesize, but I don't know offhand what those certains are.

Give this version a try. I'm pretty sure it will work.
