Title: Mulholland Drive DVD questions
Post by: BonBon85 on March 03, 2003, 12:01:09 AM
Will there ever be a SE of Mulholland Drive? I've been putting off buying it forever because I've been holding up hopes that they'll release a version with some special features. The current one doesn't have any exciting special features and it costs $30.

Really? $30? Could you direct me to this store so I can get ripped off?

Don't bet on a Spec. Ed., but you are in luck:

Universal has announced a big batch of price reductions due to take effect on the April 1st. Reduced to $19.95: American Graffiti, Brazil, K-9: P.I., The Last Starfighter, The Man Who Wasn't There, Monsoon Wedding, Mulholland Drive, Reality Bites and Xanadu.

Amazon has it listed @ $14.99 for that release date.

I hope this board's Brett Ratner hating catches on in the mainstream. On the DVD though, I really would like to see some specials about the original pilot and how and why it was made into a movie. Deleted scenes of course if any, maybe have Ebert do something...

Hey, I've got a great bonus feature that could be thrown on there.
It might reveal too much about the mystery of the film but something crazy like CHAPTERS!!!!!!

That was great. That was one of the times when I almost believed you, but not enough to actually follow up on it.

Whose number was that anyway?

i'm sad that i didn't remember that blackman would remember.  i think i just took the phone number of a writer from a san fransisco newspaper and just changed a single digit and it worked amazingly: nobody answered, the phone kept ringing until an automated voice said to leave a message, which an awful lot of people did.

I remember when you posted Ratner's number and I said it had to be fake because it was in the 415 area and Ratner's supposed to live in Beverly Hills. Sigh - nobody listened. Funny idea, though. I'd pay for a recording of the messages.

I don't remember this.

Perhaps I was someone else at the time?
Or my Brett Ratner filter was on.
Or my sphinx shield.
Or my memory is shot.
Or selective.
Or of limited capacity.
Or it's a conspiracy and shinx is just trying to make me do things.
Or think things.

I just wish Mulholland Drive had been a tv series. It's so truncated.

I was at Best Buy today and saw Mulholland Drive for $14.99.  Odd thing, though, which I hadn't noticed before, is there were at least two different covers, with different pictures of Betty (Naomi Watts).  Any particular reason for this?  I can think of a couple, sure.  I just thought it was odd.

I watched it the other night and accidentally hit the back button on my remote instead of the pause button, and then had to fast forward all the way back to where I was.

That said, I think the No Chapters feature is an ideal trick for a Lynch movie.

From the Straight Story insert:

"I know that most DVDs have chapter stops. It is my opinion that a film is not like a book- it should not be broken up. It is a continuum and should be seen as such. Thank you for your understanding." - David Lynch[/i]

I just bought it at columbiahouse.com for around $12. It really does blow that they don't have a special version with docs yet.........and add DTS surround sound to that crappy Dolby Digital system.  :multi:

Sorry for reviving old threads and the use of funky emoticons.......

Re: the sentiment: agreed.

But those who'd buy the DVD are, one'd hope, sophisticated enough to take such concerns under advisement/consideration and make up their own minds.  Lynch could maybe use some artist/audience humility.

if i was ever to make a movie and had control over the dvd, i'd keep in the cigarette burns (yes, i learned that term from fight club) and make the chapter stops at the reel changes. i was watching the dog day afternoon dvd yesterday and they kept the cigarette burns in. i like when they do that. it makes me feel like i'm in the theater. i like when i can see film grain and dirt on the print for some reason. same reason i like hearing the 'pops' on old lp's. just as long as they're not so frequent to be distracting.

Cigarette burns are cool. Although there is probably something lost in not being at the theater listening to some fucking moron on his cell phone behind you while trying to concentrate on the film.

buy it.  it's worth every penny at 2x the price.  this is a beautiful example of how to do a film to video transfer properly.  on a good monitor, this dvd looks like film.........and it's a gorgeous film to boot.
- no need for chapter stops.

Cigarette burns are cool but whenever I see them I think of how they usually pop in every ten minutes and then I think of how many cigarette burns I've seen and then my thoughts turn to how much of the film is left.  :(  Or at least that's what happens when I see them in movies when I'm watching from my house.   I don't get bothered by it at all in an actual theater for some reason.

Since Muholland Drive is a pretty easy movie to read, I can't watch it anymore. Struggled through it last year again after a few years of no contact and the film couldn't have felt more obvious. A commentary track that tries to fully interpret it would be nice because as John Wooden once said, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." Muholland Drive is one of those movies I feel I have exhausted in my brain so fresh eyes relaying a new perspective is what I need.

I stopped looking for more meaning in this movie once I felt I had a good idea of what was going on and started focusing more on the truly compelling aspect of it, which is the seamless way it moves forward from one bizarre scene to the next, always fast, always entertaining, always beautiful to look at and listen to, interesting all the way in the simplest form.

John Wooden needs to shut the hell up, whoever he is. i addressed the problem in 2003 when someone tried to put the movie together chronologically as if it was a puzzle..

Quote from: P on August 08, 2003, 01:59:04 AM
it seems u've managed to explain the outline of the film, like the structure, but not the meaning of any characters or even lines for example the cowboy, the twinky's freak-out person, the scary bum behind twinky's, the final line "silencio" said by the blue haired woman.. these are ppl whose roles exist almost outside diane's reality/dream.

u may hav put the film together in an editorial way, but the significance of individual elements, other than arbitrary time-markers, has still gone unanswered.

Lynch is amazing (INLAND EMPIRE notwithstanding) because like so many other greatest filmmakers, he has been massively misunderstood. the purpose of making his films like a puzzle, if we can put it that way, is to use a basic method to get ppl to actively participate in the creation of narrative in his films. that has the function of undermining conventional standards in much the same way that any twisted chronology has done in the past -- the unravelling of Mulholland Drive into a straight forward story is no different than someone who watches Pulp Fiction and spends about 1 minute putting the stories together in chronological order.

i think for a lot of ppl this is as far as they want to go with a film. "can i understand it on ANY level.. can i get a story out of this?" then if they can, that's it, the work is done. unfortunately in all the years of cinema this has not changed. most ppl won't/can't/don't care to go beyond simply passively absorbing a story, and when a smidgen of effort is required in that front a lot of them simply drop out. cos seriously who has the TIME and ENERGY -- I HAVE KIDS TO RAISE AND A MORTGAGE TO PAY, SHEESH MR LYNCH HAVE SOME CONSIDERATION.

so there's no denying that art is not for everyone, and that's a shame. but even if you take a film like Mully D and put it back together, so it feels almost like a normal story, you are not getting everything the film has to offer. it's like looking at a picasso painting and thinking you "get it" because you can sort of put the face back together. what's the point of that? did you just want to test yourself? is it just a million dollar mental diversion? why didn't you just go look in the mirror if you what you really want is a normal face.

JB's half-born INLAND EMPIRE analysis goes a long way in putting the film back together, and i think it's great that he's done that. NOT because i'm looking at it and going "great, problem solved, we can all go home now" but because he has given me the tools to be able to work with the film and uncover what it's REALLY about.. i now hav a chance to maybe revist it withouta falling asleep long enough to absorb the film for different values other than how it all goes together. a good structural analysis is only a STARTING POINT.

any great film, like those of David Lynch, or those of Kubrick* (another person whose films were simply "put together" and walked away from.. or in the case of EWS seemingly unable to be "put together" completely, and thus apparently worthless), deals with themes, develops an internal language through visuals and sound, uses its performers to communicate emotional elements not transferable through any other means.. all of this adds up to something, and NONE of this is contingent on how the story is "put back together".

*kubrick began making films with a similar twisted narrative structure only because it was the easiest way to elevate the pulp material he had to work with (Killers Kiss, the Killing). his early films are still no more than pulp, however, because once they are put back together they carry very little substance.

obviously i was using it as a segue in order to address the same topic you brought up. it was as relevant as you quoting some random sports figure (if that's what he is) to talk about how you see the film. anyway, whoever john wooden is, he should've been reading xixax in 2003 and noticed i said the same thing.
