Question:
The Mattress Mans fall was...
Option 1: Real
votes: 7
Option 2: Staged
votes: 24
Option 3: Half/Half (He meant to fall, but not that hard)
votes: 19
Wow, did I laugh my ass off. That guitar shattered real nice.
Now, who thinks that fall was staged or real?
I honestly can't tell. I don't think Phil Hoffman would want to take a spill like that.
I'm guessing Half/Half. I think he was supposed to fall, but not that rough.
if it was real, don't you think that people other than the brothers would've run to help him?
Sorry to spoil the fun (admin note: do not read unless you want the fun to be spoiled), fellas, but I asked Hoffman this question after the Q&A at BAM. He said, to my surprise, that it was staged. They cut just as they zoom out of his face and a stunt man performs the drop. They cut PSH back in as he is lying on the floor.

If that's the case, then that's a damn good job.
Still funny as hell.
Yeah, thats a perfect cut. Seamless. He doesnt fall all the way off, he kind of bounces, then lands on the mattress again and slides down and lands on his left foot
Oh, it's hysterical! I've seen it like 7 times now. Very funny, I'm not sure whether it's real or not but it doesn't matter to me. It's short and entertaining.
i just watched this shit 5 times in a row. funny as fuck.
How did they do it without PSH getting hurt?
Pretty convincing. I voted Real....
I think it was staged simply because it would be lame if he didn't fall.
I didn't notice the double splice mentioned above, I'll have to check that out in slo-mo.
But the landing area is in a shadow, so maybe a cushion or something is there to soften the blow.
It sure looked real. Well done..!!
As much as I would like to think its real, if PSH really fell that far everybody on the set would be running towards him, I mean look at the set up, he was meant to fall. They wouldnt put mattresses on a car next to a semitruck
Naturally the mattresses had to be there (this was to ensure his character not hurting himself)...that doesn't mean the entire thing was staged though...
Although an earlier post said it was, which I tend to believe now...

Yeah... It doesnt make any sense... Why would the D&D matress man have matresses in his commercial.
Brilliant observation.
No way thats a cut to a stuntman.
SPOILER WARNING
Watch PSH transform into the stuntman:

Is this where the second cut happens?

Yeah... It doesnt make any sense... Why would the D&D matress man have matresses in his commercial.
Why would he have mattresses, stacked on top of a limo next to a semi truck? Not really an ideal commercial set up.
Now go out and wait in the car, your embarrassing everyone

I mean, why does he have an electric guitar? It's not even plugged in, he's not even playing it, nor is there any music in the commercial.
I think it's just supposed to be some parody of a cheesy local commercial. I never really questioned why that stuff was there.
Quote from: mogwai'sHere's seven caps from the mattress commercial:
Thanks for the caps.
Looking at # 5:
It looks like the ground is raised, like a dome.
This could be where they put a cushion, then covered it and painted it to look like asphalt..!!

Who keeps the keys and instructs poser to go wait on the curb. Anybody who thinks its cool to shorten names doesnt deserve to wait in the car.

i've watched so many steve johnson match-move featurettes that i can spot one anywhere if i know that it's a visual effect. looks like this one was pulled off in part with a high speed compositing reel which allows you to add/morph/change elements in a picture and see the results instantly.

that's what i said.
Duck Sauce, no wonder you like Leno. You don't understand the basics of comedy...
It's not supposed to look accidental that he fell off the fucking truck, it's supposed to look accidental that he bounced off the mattresses and landed on the ground.
And of course it's fake... Asside from the fact that it's been explained three or four times now in this thread, do you people actually believe that PT was drunk enough during shooting to have PSH jump on a pile of unsupported mattresses lying on top of a car? Sweet mother.
well he did have mark wahlberg crash a corvette into a telephone pole - but i agree with you.
yes.
This thread is full of ignorant responses...
"Why did he have a guitar?"
"Why were there mattresses stacked on a limo?"
Shit, people. Don't you ever watch late night TV? Its chock full of meaningless goofy stuff like that. And the furniture store commercials are the worst offenders!
Although I admit to being fooled and voting for "real". Mainly because Phil asked "did you get it on film?" If he had said "video" then we'd have known that it was an act, but believe me - those cheap ass commercials are NOT shot on film.
It was cool to see the commercial, though, because it made the scene with Phil in the band's sound check make more sense. He's a wannabe musician, trying to make a buck.
Phil rocked that role.
Quote from: XixaxPhil rocked that role.
I say ....Shit yeah!!
I was impressed by the pratfall, but I was equally impressed by Hoffman's deliberately bad acting, the kind of "acting" you normally see in cheap local TV commercials -- usually, by folks who don't have any acting experience or camera presence who freeze up in front of the lens, and read their lines in a wooden way. It takes a good actor to know how to pretend to be a bad one.
on a sorta related note....Independent Electronic store commercials are bad ...at like 2am...cause it's always some dude...."Hey, cruise down to Fast Eddie's Stereo, as soon as you walk in, you'll never say no!"...
Just saying yes, that is a believable set-up for a commercial Dean would be doing....they are cheesy, bad, and lame.....which is why they run in the middle of the night....

yeah there is an online site called "Crazy Eddies".... i mean, is that really a smart business move? It doesnt really create an image of a trustworthy company,
about the stuntman falling. i uncovered a post from well over a year ago, a guy reporting about the pdl set:
Quoteexpect the first shot to be hugely complicated,
i met a dude that was a PA on the film, he said over 65 PA's were used to get the first shot which involves the delivery of the harmonium in some way (he knew about the harmonium back in august, well before the Variety article). what else did the PA tell me about?
- a scene in which philip seymour hoffman's character jumps off a van, apparently a stuntmant was slightly injured. hoffman plays a furniture salesman whom sandler's character owes $$$
other little tidbits
- another shot is of sandler getting off the plane in hawaii, one long shot from de-boarding to picking up his luggage.
- the character larisha hurts sandler's character in some way, "you killed my love!" he says
- apparently sandler's first sex scene, though after reading the MPAA rating, this was either cut or not true...
this may all sound ridiculous, and i don't want to piss anyone off or make y'all think i'm BSing, but we'll all know soon enough, the movie shows at cannes in less than a month, and there will definitely be some informative reviews...
can't #$%#@ wait
sounds like he's reporting on the various endings that were shot but not included in the movie/dvd, too
Vedy intelestink...
roger avary, from his site: I've just had a series of emails with Paul, who at first claimed that it was a stuntman -- but when I pressed him on it and accused him of a covering up, he sent a very suspicious email semi-acknowledgement with no real commitment to the truth, whatever it was. In my opinion, the fall was real. I've studied the video and did notice a slight shift in the matte on the left of frame just prior to the jump, which could have been created during a matchup of the two shots -- but there's nothing after the fall. Again, in my opinion, it's real.
But, do you see the "mound" on the ground where he lands?
In the shots where you can see the entire car, I notice a slight color change in the asphalt, forming a circle about 10' across. And, the car makes a shadow that crosses into the mound right behind the front tire. There is a slight angle change of the shadow at the same spot as the color change.
There are also some "blotches" in the center of the mound, right where he lands. These could be from previous takes..?
I think they were preparing for a fall, and went to a lot of trouble concealing a cushion in the ground.
So, I'm stickin with staged.
I am convinced from reading this thread that convincing digital effects were used, but regardless, one this is clear: THE FALL IS STAGED.
Either it's Hoffman or a stuntman, but whoever it is, after he bounces off the mattresses the first time, he pushes off with his left hand, sending him over the edge.
if it was staged or not, i am always gonna think of it as real - cuz its just funnier that way
Yep!
I thought this was the funniest thing I have ever seen on a DVD (just edging out the Ben Stiller MTV parody on the MI:2 disc)...until you all started picking it apart, piece by piece. Take it from an adult; it's funny, and it doesn't matter why--it just is!! Jeez...
I just saw this thing, its pretty funny. If that thing is really staged, then they did a fucking great job!
Heh, I still think it was staged. This is exactly the kind of thing PTA would do to rile up his fans that pay a little closer attention to details. Some might say, why go through all the extra effort to bring in a stuntman and get this whole thing shot for something that will end up just being an extra on a DVD?
This is why. The debate about it being real or not. I love it.
A seamless cut??? Virtually non-existent. There's no way there's a cut in there to a stunt man, not only once but TWICE?? No way.. That was PSH falling. Look at the creases in the leg of his jeans near his feet when he's standing on top of the truck...and pause it and look at the whole thing in slow-motion...you can follow the creases all the way down to the ground...and the shadows and everything and you're telling me that a stunt man who they went to all the trouble of searching for...looked and was a exactly the same SHAPE as PSH??? No way...someone will have to convince me...
i have a clip of the original commercial that paul copied the pdl mattress man commerical from. it looks pretty much exactly the same.
except in the original, the guy's wearing a cowboy hat.
he walks along the trailer saying his bit, trys to land on some matresses on top of a big cadillac, falls off, smashes the guitar, get's up, crew runs over to him... same fall, same positions, same camera work, everything's visually the same.
i'll try to get some clips, if anybody is interested.
i got it from a sean lennon epk! it had a few other wacky video mishaps, all many video generations deep.
i used it back in 1998 in a video clips show i used to produce, proof of it is here:
