whenever I go to type "now" and end up typing "noe" it ends up capitalizing it "Noe" instead of "now".  Gaspar Noe is the only reason i can think of for this.  but I can't have typed that more than like, once.

Mine does the exact same, and I'm 100% certain I've never typed Gaspar Noe's name before.

sam mendes directed this new iphone commercial

the 2min ad is all about the new front camera feature of the iphone4 and what they are calling "face time".

are you kidding me? apple are laughing all the way to the bank with this shit, they know there will be millions of ppl who think this feature is something new and fresh. who is falling for this? i can't believe something that has been around for YEARS AND YEARS - SERIOUSLY I HAVE A NOKIA FROM AT LEAST 5 YEARS AGO THAT HAS THIS FEATURE - is somehow being presented as something NEW and EXCITING.

wow. apple is for idiots who never hear of anything until apple does it. of COURSE it's fresh and new and game changing if the only game you have ever paid attention to is what steve jobs says.

Is Apple really positioning this as a new feature? I don't think most apple freaks think that. What makes it exciting is that video chat will be more ubiquitous and generally more awesome (have you seen that screen?!). I don't know how the video chat feature works on a Nokia, but are you not restricted to use it only with other Nokia video chat users? And how many people do you know who has that same Nokia? I can't imagine enough to use the feature with any regularity..

We could check email and get online with our phones pre-iPhone. But Apple changed the way we do it and made it so seamless that it does in fact feel new, even though it's really not.

Yeah, this isn't the apple thread so I'll keep this brief, but Apple isn't pretending this is something brand new, they're just getting the word out that this is available on the new phone.  The new phone is a brilliantly designed upgrade to something Apple has already done best.

Also, double camera so you can switch from your face and the thing you point with your phone without turning it... I don't know, sounds simple and silly, but huge step forward towards "Back to the Future 2" video calls.

Yeah, this isn't the apple thread so I'll keep this brief,

moved it now so feel free to elaborate.

firstly i don't disagree that the new phone is a massive upgrade on the old one,. what bothers me about apple and its fanboys (and i should've known there'd be heaps here) is that with every single product they've made their only real claim to success is that they have made everyone think they are the bees knees of technology.

cbrad's questions here pretty much prove my point:

no you are not restricted to use it only with other nokia phones. no they do not have to have the same kind of phone. in fact the video calling feature has been common here for many years. not only nokia (many of their models have double cameras) but also my current Samsung S7350 from 3 years ago has a front facing camera capable of video calls. my old phone that i lost a year ago, which was also a couple of years old at the time, the LG Viewty, had a front facing camera. AND THEY CAN ALL CALL EACH OTHER ON VIDEO.

the amazing thing with all these phones, or rather amazing only if apple did it i guess, is that you can make video calls OVER 3G. you don't have to find a wifi connection in order to talk to someone, which is basically just giving you a webcam. it's much more futurisitic to be able to use a video phone over the existing telephone networks and not hav to find a wifi hotspot like some kind of CAVEMAN using a payphone.

telecommunications technology is one of the most misunderstood things the average consumer has to deal with every day. i think the problem is that in america you hav a really, REALLY, bad system where every carrier is operating on a different band with massive gaps in 3G coverage nationwide and massive strain on existing networks in big cities. for this reason i dont' think it's entirely your fault as an american consumer that you hav never really got to use video calls before or even heard much about them. it's my understanding that most carriers discourage this for the amount of bandwidth it uses even with existing 3G networks.

if you don't know what 3G refers to, that's another thing. but here's where 4G supposedly comes in. the new HTC Evo is a far superior phone to the iphone, for many reasons i won't bore you with. but it is just another example of what really bothers me about apple, and what has been bugging me since this thread started.. where i said, regarding the latest ipod at the time..

it's not like it's the first device ever to play video and mp3s and all that. it'll be the highest selling, coolest looking, and whatever, but they are hardly the first to make porn portable.

it doesn't seem to matter that apple charge you more for a product that has essentially been on the market for years. i suppose if you can easily afford it, then that line of argument is moot. but it's not just that they are raping ppl's wallets, what bothers me is the idea that somehow they are at the forefront of anything other than profits. and that too is a fallacy, as nokia are the leading manufacturer wordlwide. the problem to me is the kind of mentality they hav created. apple fans are to technology what family guy fans are to TV, they know absolutely nothing about it. ppl think that apple are the benchmark of modern technology or of what the "future" is, like pas said above, and what's infuriating about that is it's complete FOOLISHNESS. you are actually living MANY years behind the real state of the art. and if an apple fan were to somehow realise that, then about 90% of the appeal of the brand would instantly evaporate.. "what.. i'm NOT the coolest kid just like everyone else i know?"

and that's the problem. being cool has nothing to do with being smart or being right. it's to do with what everyone else is doing. it creates a cult like mentality that is impossible to break through. look at the cognitive dissonance following my post.. "but SURELY nokia is exactly like iphone and they have only like ONE phone that does this.. cos apple only has one phone that does this so it can't be THAT prevalent.." . and when someone like me offers alternatives, they are considered something between blasphemous troublemakers and party poopers.. it's almost too much to believe. i guarantee you some ppl will have trouble believing that nokia, samsung, LG, and other brands have had video call capabilities since years ago.

apple knows that they have always made their money out of ppl's ignorance. this is exactly the reasoning behind the ipad for example. who needs this if they hav a laptop? also there have been tablets around for years, but the flaw of the other companies is that they dont' hav a CULT like following that will buy everything they spew out. the ipad is also probably apple's most user friendly product, it's for babies, i mean literally for babies.. it is a way to penetrate the market at a really young age so to begin indoctrinating toddlers to use only apple products.. no one with proper tactile use of their limbs will use the ipad as anything more than a TOY.

well anyway. thanks for reading this if you did, sorry if i offended this precious brand too much. i'll go back to 2010 now..

You sold me. I'm getting the iPhone 4.

Question - can I keep my exisiting unlimited data plan if I get the new one and will it extend or will I only have it for the remaining life of my existing contract? I never considered myself a bandwidth hog and I thought that I was just using the iPhone the same way anyone would, but it turns out i use 4gbs a month and that's double the 2gb the new tiered plan offers.

P, I'm sad to read that.  You are usually a smarter guy than that.
Blind Apple hatred is just as bad as the blind Apple support (or blind PC following).  Idiots follow everything and assuming everyone that follows any one thing are all like these idiots is just ignorant.
So is saying that the HTC Evo is definitively a better phone.  It may be better for some, but it's still a matter of preference (I could give a shit about open source, the iPhone has a much better touch response, and I'm already used to the more-intuitive Apple UI).

Apple doesn't pretend to be bleeding edge, bringing everyone new inventions.  They are all about design.  And they are the best at it in most cases.

Everything is designed on the way people think and live and Apple is about bringing them what they want in the best way they can (obviously it's about profit, but what giant company isn't?  At least Apple has a voice)

I don't have an iPad.  I just can't afford the luxury, but some people can.  If you look at it, it's perfectly made for lounging.  That's how it's angled and it doesn't pretend to be the replacement for laptops.  If it were, they would be more expensive and they would get rid of their far superior line of actual laptops.  It's a very casual device, perfect for reading or watching movies in bed or on an airplane, taking a few notes when you need to.
It's not meant for big business meetings or heavy design work.  --- that said, I have no real desire for one at all.

And what's the problem with Ease-of-use?  Are you mad that you had to learn how to use computers the hard way?  That's an old-man complaint.

And you know what?  Apple products LOOK COOL.  There is nothing wrong with design.  Look at what they put into their design and the pride they take in making everything useful and functional.
I hate when people bitch about Apple caring to make their products so attractive.  It seems like a bitter reaction.

I'm still lost on this one.  I've heard conflicting information.  Supposedly, current ATT customers will be allowed to keep an unlimited plan.  It's only if you change your plan or if you're a new customer.
I have my doubts about that though.

chicago i-phone 4 line with really bad weather

http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-4-lines-around-the-world-2010-6#fifth-avenue-nyc-1

ok, that baffles me, it's fine if ppl are in love with apple, but, standing in line for hours when you can easily walk by the store a few days later and buy one?? or worse, if ppl are so in love of the latest technology, why don't you order it on-line and save a bunch of time??

the only good reasons I can think are that the upgrade to the current i-phone is a game changer, and so ppl must have it now, that's fine, the other, that it'll be sold out and not available for months to come, but is like that? or do they not produce enough i-phones?

Stefen

I think it's very tough to get. Like they may not be readily available for a few months.

I'm waiting for the white version. I'm curious how much better this new one is.

Sounds like they might have rushed it out a little too soon.  Problems people are reporting range from weird yellow streaks on the display to reception dropping out when you hold the phone by the edges (because the outer rim of the phone is the actual antenna).  I wasn't going to get one right away anyway, I mean I've only had my 3GS for a year at this point, and hopefully they can get the kinks worked out for the next few batches.

I had a 3g so I waited in line for 4 hours this morning to get the 4 because I'm an idiot*.

*So last week when they put the phone on presale I, like many others, tried all day to preorder from the website.  No luck, too much traffic, no one getting through.  So on my lunch break I stopped by the Apple Store to say "hey, can I preorder a phone" and was told I could download the new Apple Store app on my current phone and try my luck there.  So in the store, I downloaded the app and it would only let you reserve a phone in the store, as opposed to letting you purchase one.  I was like "okay".  That night around 8 or so, you could FINALLY get through on the website to order the phone so I went online.  Got about halfway through the process and realized that they will only ship the phone to your billing address, which is my apartment, whose mailbox will not fit the phone, I don't have a doorman, hence it would be returned to the post office for pickup.  Since I couldn't get it delivered to my office, I decided that it would be easier to just swing by the Apple Store and pick mine up instead of waiting all the way until THE NEXT DAY at the post office (because it would be closed by the time I got off work).  So yesterday during lunch I swung by the Apple Store again, to say "hey so what's the deal going to be tomorrow".  I was told to get there "as early as I could" and that "people were already lining up at the 5th Ave store".  It was probably 3pm.  I then realized what a fucking idiot I was in thinking that things had changed since 2 years ago when I waited FOUR HOURS IN LINE FOR THE PHONE.  The ONLY reason I did this at the time is because it was the only way to get the phone.  You couldn't order it online.  I had naively assumed that since you could now just ORDER THE PHONE ONLINE that no other fucking idiot would actually line up at the store and wait HOURS for their phone now.  But I was so very very wrong.  And I was now one of those idiots.  To put an even bigger FUCK YOU on top of the whole thing, for those that ordered their phones (when I had the chance to), they shipped A DAY EARLY.  So not ONLY WAS I (and HUNDREDS OF OTHERS) going to be waiting outside in 90 degree heat at 7 in the FUCKING MORNING for this stupid phone, but BUT BUT everyone else already got their phones YESTERDAY!  Making the whole exercise completely pointless.  I don't know why I did this.  The phone is cool though.**

**Except for the phone part, but we already knew that.

Idiot!

But seriously, how much better than the older models is this one? Is it  alot faster than the 3GS? Is the display mind boggingly gorgeous?
