Is anyone registered here? It's too steep for me but looks so enticing, what with the genuine article and all. Just wondered whether its as good as it seems.
That's been nagging at me for a while too. I really want to join, but that is kind of expensive. But I heard that Lynch posts his paintings, music, and short films there. Mmmmmm...
....mmmm. Wanna go Dutch, JB? I'm thinking you could just hack into my computer or we set up some kinda sharing thang and then if we arrange a mutually convenient set of times we could be metaphorically cosied up on the cybersofa with something herbal and a box of Matchmakers in no time, and indulging our passion (for Lynch) for half the cost!
Oops, hope he doesn't read that. Only kidding, Dave.
Love the av, J. Don't ever change...
I'm thinking the Lynch section should only ever have one thread. And also that I might bed down here forever.
Who's seen The Straight Story? I saw it recently and liked it but felt it was sentimentally challenged (particularly the scene with the girl hitch-hiker. Those aerial shots of the fields, though...

I'm in the minority that LOVE the Straight Story. Who knew a G-rated Lynch could be so good.
Obviously, it's not a true Lynch because he didn't write it, but I still really love it. Farnsworth and Spacek (SP?) are so good in it. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
Every night is a different stage in life, fun gag.
I agree, I love Spacek. That could so easily have been crass and embarrassing but it was beautifully acted and directed. In fact, almost stripped of the Lynch style the film makes you realise what a good actors' director he is. I can't think of a performance in any of the films I've seen (dying for Wild At Heart right now) that isn't above average.
By the way, Jeremy, if you're going to be mean, can you at least post that Lynch pic in this thread just so I can look at it?

Sorry.. this is the first time I checked back on this thread... I might have kept it, but I never feel comfortable with one avatar for too long.
It was too big, anyway.

I have to say I loved 'The Straight Story' too. A great Farnsworth performance. It's sad that he commited suicide less than a year after the release of the film. As for the movie, I love the slow, simple 'everyman' (if you will) pacing. It's not in a hurry to tell the story, it just lets it flow. I think it shows what a great director can do with some good actors and a fleshed out script. A beautiful film.

Agreed. Let's get dressed and check out of this hotel.
So, on that... anyone seen the elusive Wild At Heart? And while (whilst?) I'm here... someone please tell me the tale of the Heineken placementation in Blue Velvet. And whilst (while?) you're there, do you think it disrupts, or does it work with the whole absurdity/corruption/fakeness of American Dream deal? I like it personally. And finally... should I buy the Twin Peaks boxed set? Yes, I know it's great, but try to own it?
i liked wild at heart but its my least favorite of his films (okay maybe dune is).
i dont know aything obout the heineken placements... i just thought lynch likes heineken. i think those scenes are pretty funny.

Let's Rock, budgie!
Of course you should own it; the pilot episode is worth it alone. Too bad the Region 1 set doesn't include it. But the interviews and the doc "Introduction To David Lynch" tries too hard to copy the director's style and ends up being annoying (choppy editing, toying with the sound track, etc.), but the antedotes from cast and crew are very amusing.
Have you seen this, budgie?

Director Toby Keeler investigates all of David Lynch's artistic endeavors (which include photography, painting, music, and furniture building as well as filmmaking) in this fascinating documentary shot during the making of Lost Highway. Along with film clips and interviews with Lynch, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and producer Deepak Nayar are numerous behind-the-scenes glimpses at Lost Highway and Lynch at work in other media. The highlight is the Eraserhead reunion, where Jack Nance, Catherine Coulson (the "Log Lady" from Twin Peaks and Nance's first wife), and Lynch visit the site where Lynch's first successful feature was shot in the mid-1970s over a two-year period. Maybe not as revealing as one could hope, but an always intriguing portrait of an uncompromising artist driven to create in a wide range of media.
Some other Lynch news:
Wild At Heart SE DVD in 2003?
Thedigitalbits.com is reporting in their rumor mill today that MGM is developing a special edition DVD of Wild At Heart for release sometime in 2003. This is somewhat old news, but no word on this disc had been heard for a while, so the fact that it's still being mentioned bodes well for a 2003 release. Keep in mind that it's called the rumor mill for a good reason, so nothing is set in stone. But given the high sales of their Blue Velvet SE DVD, it would only make sense for MGM to want to exploit their other Lynch title in the same manner. If they do as good a job on Wild At Heart as they did on Blue Velvet, this should be a great disc.[/img]
Wow, I hope everything pulls through.
Can't even speak, Guffy, I'm so turned on and suffocating with desire. Why d'you always make me spend? Having such a bad Lynch craving that you've just made worse. Love the sound of the reunion. That DVD could be the next best thing to joining the website.
See that cover painting, though? Is that a flattened rat? If so, then that is so fucking coincidental I'm in orbit... and if the other shape is a bird...
Edit: just ran off to check it out. So now, what should I do... get a Region 1 DVD that I can only watch in college, or buy the video that I can watch at home even though it has 15 mins less stuff?
Quote from: budgieSee that cover painting, though? Is that a flattened rat? If so, then that is so fucking coincidental I'm in orbit... and if the other shape is a bird...
Yes, on the left is a rat, on the right is a bird. You witness Lynch make that painting in the doc.

Here's some really cool news straight from David Lynch's official website. Making one of his regular appearances on the site's chatroom, Mr. Lynch mentioned that he has been working dilligently on color-correction and timing for MGM's upcoming Wild at Heart DVD. The film is apparently also set to undergo a complete 5.1 audio overhaul. Wild at Heart is tentatively set for an October release.

Just for you, budgie:
Wild At Heart will be released on DVD in the UK on May 12. The disc features English, German and French soundtracks, all 5.1, and an anamorphic widescreen transfer in the films original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It doesn't look like the DVD will have any extras at all, but you never know for sure until the disc actually comes out.

Quote from: Pastor ParsleyI hate to be the one to bring this back to topic and spoil all the fun....but is anyone here a member of davidlynch.com and is it worth the cost? I'm a big fan but my wallet is so sad right now.
I was a member for a few months a while back, and only stopped because I wasn't visiting as much as I felt I should considering I was paying for it. The reason I wasn't visiting wasn't to do with the site, tho, but just to do with not having time or necessarily being in the mood. It is a wonderful place, and I found it really psychologically interesting in that it's like being in Eraserhead or something. There is a load of great, very funny and quality stuff on there, and puzzles for you to work out for more treats etc. Lynch's series are a must if you like his movies. There's a very active pair of chatrooms where you could in theory get to talk to the man as he drops by every week, links to his birdfeeders, little shorts, his artwork, a video interview answering questions you can pose every two weeks. Just loads. I defend his charges, as if you think about it it's only like renting a couple of films or going to the cinema twice a month, not even that. And you pay per month so you could sign up for one, see everything and drop out again. And go back a while later. At the end of the day I'd rather support Lynch's creative work than pay to see some shit movie, what's the difference? I'd say go, definitely.
