I don't know which is more interesting:  That the New Beverly is running "Magnolia" on April EIGHT at TWO pm deliberately, or co-incidentally.

There was a fabulous screening of BOOGIE NIGHTS last night at one of the old, mind-blowingly ornate (https://ornatetheatres.com/index.php/united-artists-los-angeles/) theaters on Broadway in downtown L.A.  (The "United Artists" theater was opened by Fairbanks, Pickford, Chaplin and Griffith in the 20's I believe.

An enthusiastic, close-to-sellout crowd responded beautifully (and appropriately) to every moment. From the gasps, it sounded like there were more than a few first-timers.   A lovely DCP print (they have no film capabilities there), added to the enjoyment.

Some special guests for a Q&A afterwards included Costume Designer Mark Bridges and Producer JoAnne Sellar.  (The conversation was recorded for a local NPR station; I'll post a link next week.)

Editor Dylan Tichenor was also in the audience.  I sat next to a woman who said she repped Philip Seymour Hoffman and Don Cheadle back in the day.  Sources tell me that PTA and Maya were out of town (yesterday was Maya's birthday), and consequently wouldn't be there.

A couple of bonuses:  John C. Reilly apparently recorded a "don't be a dick; silence your gizmos" recording that they ran before the show started.  I also had an opportunity to approach both Dylan and JoAnne after the screening, introduce myself, and ask if they'd be willing to speak with me for my "Making of..." project.

I understand that Xixaxer @modage was in attendance, but we didn't connect (again).  (Short of setting myself on fire, I've done all I can.)   I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and was quite relieved to have this evening exceed my expectations.  (You'll recall last weekend's screening did not!)

What's the making of project? Are you making a docu-series on Boogie Nights?

Well, I promised you guys (and the rest of the Cinemaverse) that I'd revisit this next time it came around on The Big Screen.   Hoping that seeing it with an assembled faithful the way God intended will improve the experience--or at least diminish my intense disappointment with my only other viewing.

Ah. Sorry.  Duh.   The night of the 16th--but not staying for Model Shop.  Saw it a few weeks ago (on the small screen, however).

[edit]  This screening will have additional significance: It will complete a re-visit of all of PTA's features on the big screen since January 2018.  It's been a real blast seeing these all again (some more than once) with appreciative audiences.   Fingers-crossed that the Collective Vibe will pick me up and carry me along--at least to some extent.

Can we start a xixax fundraiser to fly me to LA for the day to see IV/LG? $430 should cover the round trip, I'll take care of the rest. Thank you.

That Long Goodbye ending is my fave from Altman. "You'll never learn, you're a born loser." "Yeah, I even lost my cat". BLAM! then Hooray for Hollywood, holy shit that flays me every time.

Comedians Cinema Club - Boogie Nights
Thursday 14th November 2019 @ Aces And Eights Bar
Doors 7:30 PM - £4.00
Quote
An absolute staple of the London comedy scene, the Chortle Award nominated Comedians Cinema Club brings together the UK's best comedians and forces them to improvise their way through movies. These movies are brash, hilarious, nothing like the originals, and a sure-fire blockbuster hit! This month the CCC are taking on everyone's favourite Diggler, Dirk, with a no doubt incredible transformation into the world of Boogie Nights!
'What a silly idea, uproariously executed. A small cast of comedians improvise their way through a film they may only have half-remembered, or never seen at all.' Chortle

'One of London's best improv comedy nights' London Evening Standard

Tickets from £4 - £6

Man, I'm not sure how I feel about this one.   Boogie Nights, MST3K-style?  Whew.  Truth be told, were I in London next week, I'd probably end up going...

This tweet caught me by surprise--forgetting that the Pandemic isn't as uniformly awful like it is in California at the moment.

https://twitter.com/ThePCCLondon/status/1338106830472482816

I checked out the website and found the following:

QuoteHello cinema lovers,

When we reopened our doors three million years ago way back in mid-October, the rush for tickets to our own programme and the BFI London Film Festival took the entire team by surprise. We'd hoped there would be an appetite to return, but we didn't think  we'd have performances selling out before we even had a chance to tell everyone they were happening!

It was a wonderful feeling, but it also highlighted an issue which many of you also noticed; the number of seats available for each screening fluctuated greatly depending on the seat choices by those in attendance.

What does this mean?

Sadly, that the majority of our SOLD OUT shows we were actually operating at a far lower capacity than we'd hoped.

Our 300 seater auditorium saw sold-out shows range from 63 to 77 sales, with our 104 seater screen reaching between 21 to 28 for a sell out.  Not only did this mean that many of you missed out on tickets, but also that it was going to be a lot tougher for us to meet our main objective; to retain all staff and instil as much confidence as we can in the team that we all have a future here at the cinema.

To try to address this our challenge was to figure out how we can adjust our seating plan in a way that retains, without question our confidence, that we're offering you the safest cinema-going environment we can whilst opening up as many seats as possible.

Our first step was to analyse the sales patterns for shows through the year to see how many single, double, triple+ bookings take place and where those bookings tend to sit.

We've taken these findings and spent some time looking at the socially distanced seating approach that other cinemas around the country had in place to see if there was another way to operate which we felt covers all the required bases, and we think we've cracked it!

For all performances due to take place when we reopen, we'll be updating the seating plan in both screens to a new format that will only offer assigned single and paired seats scattered throughout the screen [and even a couple of triple seats in the downstairs screen].

The seats will continue to be socially distanced with nobody directly in front or behind you with at least 3 seats either side in your row left empty.

We haven't made this decision lightly. The team will now have to manually reallocate all previously booked seats for every performance in the coming weeks. You may notice certain performances on the website are closed for booking and this is due to this process. They will return on sale as soon as reallocations are completed. Not a fun job, but a necessary one, and as we work our way through this process your patience will be highly appreciated.

We understand this change might be frustrating for those of you who have already booked or had planned to attend with a larger group, but, for now, we hope it won't spoil your night at the movies too much to split into smaller groups within the cinema.

By supporting this change we'll be able to offer more seats to all shows – 95 in our downstairs screen and 32 upstairs - whilst retaining our current level of safe in-screen social distancing. All this helps ensure the entire team who have been a huge part of our past, can continue to be here for our present and future. Simply put, a win-win-win!

If you have booked a ticket for a performance, we will contact you with your updated seating information within the next 14 days [that's if your seat has been moved].

Should you be unhappy with the changes made to your booking, refunds / exchanges will of course be made available to you.  For further questions regarding this, please get in touch with our Box Office Team at boxofficemanager@princecharlescinema.com!

Again, thank you all so much for being by our side through this – the return of our audience has been a heart-bursting level of goodness for the team, and we're thankful to every single one of you!

Be excellent to each other.

The Prince Charles Cinema

A little ray of sunshine, perhaps.  I hope they can make it work.

Quick tangent: For those who are fans of the Aero, the guy who manages it (and is playing the harmonica in the cute video they released), Ryan Marker, co-hosts a great podcast:

https://screendrafts.libsyn.com/

It's been one of my new favorite podcasts for a few months now. Their list of guests is impressive — Joanna Robinson, Bryan Cogman (yes the GOT writer), Darren Franich, Scott Wampler (who very amusingly didn't realize how long the podcast was), and many others you'd recognize from the film journalism world.

MAGNOLIA (35mm) - June 5, 2021, 11am - Million Dollar Theater, Downtown Los Angeles

My first visit to a theater since Jan of 2020 (16+ months) was a rousing success.  A nice print, a glorious movie, and an appreciative audience. About 100-ish of the faithful gathered on a late Saturday morning in downtown L.A. inside one of the first movie palaces (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Dollar_Theater) built in the country.  (Thank you, Sid Grauman.) I especially enjoyed listening to the woman a couple of rows behind me that laughed heartily at every appropriate moment.

And, because nerds gotta nerd, I even got a one-on-one tour of the projection booth following the screening.

Hooray for (celluloid) Hollywood!

Fellow SoCal-ers:   Looks like the Frida Cinema in Orange County is doing a "MAGNIFICENT ANDERSONS" series:  All of Paul's and most (all?) of Wes's.

Do you guys think that PTA will attend also the first screening open to the general audience in NYC and LA for the limited release?
Do we know about the previous movies?

That feels unlikely to me.  If PHANTOM THREAD is any guide, he only appeared for "special" screenings--at least here in L.A.  (The The first day or two of "Industry" screenings, the Cinematheque, the "live score" screening downtown...)

Licorice Pizza will have a an extended run at the New Beverly starting the day after Christmas, and Phantom Thread will be playing there on NYE as a matinee.

I was thinking earlier about how the Sherman Oaks Galleria would be the absolute perfect setting for a screening of this movie.

I wish the joint was still an Arclight!! It's a Regal now, with the Arclight shadowpuppet logo still painted on the front outside. Still, my favorite theater in the Valley even over NoHo Laemmle.
