You know, the US is big enough and full of famous people that you can just list your state.

Plus, your "ashamed" list needs some reconsideration.  Especially if you're including multiple states.

Okay, I was born in Norman, Oklahoma.  let's start there:

"Fatigue dulls the pain, but awakes enticing thoughts of death. So! that is the way in which you are tempted to overcome your loneliness-by making the ultimate escape from life.-No! It may be that death is to be your ultimate gift to life: it must not be an act of treachery against it."

Rules For Visiting Minnesota

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Don't order filet mignon or pasta primavera at Kroll's Kitchen. It's a diner. They serve breakfast 24 hours a day. Let them cook something they know. If you upset the ladies in the kitchen they'll kick your butt.

2) Don't laugh at the names of our little towns: Fertile, Moorhead, Climax, Cummings, Gentilly, or we will just HAVE to kick your butt.

3) Don't order a bottle or a can of soda here. Up here it's called Pop. Accept it. Doing otherwise can lead to a butt kicking.

4) We know our heritage. Most of us are more literate than you. We are also better educated and generally a lot nicer. Don't refer to us as a bunch of hicks or we'll kick your butt.

5) We have plenty of business sense. You have to make a living up here. Naturally, we do sometimes have small lapses in judgment from time to time (Jesse Ventura) but we are not dumb enough to let someone move to our state in order to run for the Senate. If someone tried to do that, we would kick her butt back to Arkansas.

6) We are fully aware of how cold it gets here in the winter, so shut the heck up. Just spend your money and get the heck out of here or we'll kick your butt.

7) Don't order the vegetarian special at the local diner. Everyone will instantly know that you're a tourist. Eat your steak rare like God intended and have some potatoes with that, for heaven's sake! Also, don't ask what a hot dish is or we'll kick your butt.

8 ) Don't try to fake a Minnesota accent. We don't have an accent. Do NOT mention the movie "Fargo" as that will incite a riot and you will get your butt kicked.

9) Don't talk about how much better things are at home because we know better. Many of us have visited big-city like Detroit, New York, and LA, and we have the scars to prove it. If you don't like it here, Northwest Airlines is ready when you are. Move your butt on home before it gets kicked.

10) Yes, we know that ice fishing is "not your thing." We don't care. If you don't understand the beauty of being out on a lake when it's 10 below zero then you should go home and try fishing in New York Harbor. Also, if you hog the heater in the fish house we'll kick your butt.

11) Don't complain that Minnesota doesn't really have 10,000 lakes, we actually have around 22,000, so if you whine we'll kick your butt all the way back to Cleveland.

12) Don't ridicule our mannerisms. We only speak when spoken to. We hold doors open for others. We offer our seats to old folks because such things are expected of civilized people. Behave yourselves around our sweet, little gray-haired grandmothers or they will kick some manners into your butt just like they did ours.

13) So you think we're quaint or losers because most of us live in the north woods? That's because we have enough sense to not live in filthy, smelly, crime-infested cesspools like New York or LA. Make fun of our fresh air and we'll kick your butt.

14) Last, but not least, DO NOT DARE to come out here and tell us how the Vikings and the Twins suck (only Minnesotans and true fans can knock'em down). If you do, this will get your butt shot (right after it is kicked). Just mention this once and you will go home in a pine box minus your butt.

I saw a documentary today, about Americans keeping big cats as home pets, and they said that Texas has the largest population of tiger, lions, pumas etc in USA. They mentioned a town called Pahrump. pah-rrrump Sorry, cronopio's post about Minnesota's town names made me think of Pahrump.

I'm from Luxembourg. Which is, in fact, rather small...so my choice is somewhat limited. Nomnetheless, I found some people:

the good ones:

Claus Cito. He created this beautiful statue called "Gelle Fra" ("The Golden Woman") which is situated in Luxembourg-City and symbolizes our independance.
(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gouvernement.lu%2Fpictures%2Fshared%2Fphotos%2Fdossier%2Ftoutsavo%2Fluxenimages%2F12011.jpeg&hash=8c1bb0cc326021f5f0a36f00aabb1a6c7cfff46e)

Robert Schuman. Well, in fact, he was French, but he was born in Luxembourg. He is one of the intellectual fathers of the European Union.

Paul Shaffer is insane. if you watch him closely during the Late Show, the way he directs the band, the way he bounces up and down, they way he talks, he reminds me of a teacher i once had who turned out to be a child molester. granted, he is very talented, and i know all the things listed above are things he does because he gets into it, i just dont like the guy. :|

Al Franken to challenge Norm Coleman in Minnesota for the Senate?

Franken says he's more likely than not to run for U.S. Senate in '08
[/i]

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/8573960.htm?1c

FREDERIC J. FROMMER
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Comedian and liberal talk show host Al Franken put the odds of a challenge against Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., in 2008 at better than 50-50, and said he would make a decision by late next year.

"I've thought about it and discussed it with my family more," Franken told The Associated Press Saturday, before attending the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner here. The only holdout, he said, is his 19-year-old son Joe, who is worried he'll see less of his father.

Franken, over a bite at a Thai restaurant (he ordered tom yum goong soup with shrimp and seafood salad), also said he's happy with the direction of his new radio show, "The O'Franken Factor," despite unenthusiastic early reviews.

Franken, who first floated the idea of running for Senate last year, said he's spoken to state and party officials, political operatives, and a couple of senators, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., about it.

"I asked Hillary, 'Can you give me some suggestions about running for Senate in a state you haven't lived for in a while, or in your case, ever?' " he recalled, laughing heartily.

"And she said, 'This will be a long conversation,' so we agreed to have a long conversation about it."

Franken, 52, was born in New York City and lives there now, but grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis.

As an adult, he was friends with the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, a Minnesota Democrat who died in a plane crash a week and a half before the 2002 election. Coleman, who had been in a nasty campaign with Wellstone, went on to defeat former Vice President Walter Mondale who replaced Wellstone on the ticket.

Although he's not a candidate yet, Franken is already taking shots at Coleman, calling him a "shill" for the Bush administration.

Coleman declined to comment, but the chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party, Ron Eibensteiner, said, "This is a joke, right?"

"Minnesota experimented with one Ventura-type of candidate," Eibensteiner said, referring to professional-wrestler-turned-governor Jesse Ventura. "I would be extremely surprised if Minnesota experimented with another one. It just didn't work the first time."

Franken said he would probably not take political action committee money but would also not put in any of his own money into a race.

"Absolutely not," he said, laughing. "If the staff went out for beers, I'd pick it up. But you're paying for this, right? Am I right? I'm right, right?"

His cell phone rang.

"Hi, Norm," Franken said. No, not that Norm. It was Norm Ornstein, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (and native Minnesotan), who Franken plans to book on his show.

He also fielded a call from Rich Lowry, editor of the National Review, who Franken writes a small chapter about in his book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right."

In the book, Franken recounts calling Lowry and challenging him to a fight after Lowry had said that Democrats had "feminized" politics. Lowry declined and the two met for lunch instead, and now Lowry was calling to meet up with Franken that night.

"It's a very odd relationship," Franken said after inviting Lowry on to his show. "We sort of are friends."

Some critics say that Franken's show, and the liberal network on which it appears, Air America Radio, lack the punch of conservative radio marked by Rush Limbaugh.

"I have to do a show that reflects me," Franken said, in an earnest tone reminiscent of his Saturday Night Live character Stuart Smalley, who would constantly remind himself, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggone it, people like me."

"My feeling is a lot of the reviews reflect the preconceptions of what you have to do to counter Rush Limbaugh," Franken added. "I am not going to bloviate for three hours."

One month into the show, Franken said he's pleased with how it's going.

"I feel like the show's growing every day, and the show in a year will be different than the show was the first day," he said. "But I feel like we're totally on the right track."

But Franken did acknowledge that it was harder being funny in this format.

"It's certainly difficult to be funny for three hours, because you talk about very serious things," he said. "I'd like to loosen it up a little bit, and try to write a little bit more comedy for it, maybe make it a little less guest-heavy."

Despite Franken's relentless attacks on the Bush administration, he actually got a little plug from the president at Saturday night's dinner.

"It really gets me when the critics say I haven't done enough for the economy. I mean, look what I've done for the book publishing industry," Bush said, citing Franken's book and two others critical of him.

In the "ashamed" column...

Mayor of St. Paul, a Democrat, endorses Bush

The country would be better off, said Mayor Randy Kelly, "if we don't try to bring in a whole new leadership team."

http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4905953.html

St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly sent tremors through the presidential campaign in battleground Minnesota Sunday by endorsing Republican President George Bush, delighting state GOP officials and irritating his fellow DFLers.

Kelly is believed to be the only major office-holder in Minnesota in either party to cross over in the presidential race. But rumors of his possible switch to the Republican Party did not materialize.

In a relatively low-key announcement in the back yard of his East Side home, Kelly said he will remain a Democrat and will continue to differ with Republicans on key issues such as the mushrooming budget deficit.

He also urged Bush not to use the gay marriage issue to "divide America."

The war in Iraq and the economic recovery now underway will go better "if we don't try to bring in a whole new leadership team," Kelly said.

"The common good will be better served on the path we're on than with an abrupt change of direction, especially one paved in part with political hatred," Kelly said, adding that his decision was influenced recently when he saw a bumper sticker that said "I Hate Bush."

Kelly said he spoke to Bush personally by telephone on Friday and was invited to join him at a campaign stop in Mankato on Wednesday. He didn't say if he would be there. Kelly said the call was not a factor in his decision, and that his decision had been made earlier.

A DFLer who spent 30 years in the Legislature battling Republicans on many fronts, Kelly offered no direct criticism of Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic nominee. The closest he came was criticizing a "partisanship that threatens to destroy the national will to come together to win the war on terror here at home, and across the world."

The reaction from DFLers ranged from annoyance to censure to dismissal of the importance of the crossover.

DFL Chairman Mike Erlandson said Kelly's endorsement "will have no impact on the Nov. 2 election" and won't matter much outside of St. Paul.

Several of about a dozen St. Paul DFLers who gathered across the street from Kelly's house said they suspect that Kelly's real motive was to lay the ground for a possible later conversion to the Republican Party and a run for statewide office, on the theory that he will be owed a big favor and will be helped by Bush if he wins reelection.

"I can't imagine how someone could consider himself a Democrat and back such a fringe right-wing candidate," said Council member Dave Thune, a frequent antagonist of Kelly's.

"This shows that Mayor Kelly is totally out of touch and possibly looking out for his own skin," he added.

Kelly denied any such ambitions for statewide office, saying that if he seeks reelection in the fall of 2005, it will be as a DFLer. "This is not in any way calculated to advance an interest in higher office," he said.

The chairman of the city's DFL organization, Jim Mogen, said Kelly "has traded the values of the voters of St. Paul for the agenda of the Republican Party's far right." Kelly "decided to deal away the progressive principles that he held in the Minnesota Legislature for table scraps from [Republican] Gov. Tim Pawlenty and the Taxpayers League."

Others said that Kelly might have hurt his chances for reelection because the solid DFL majority in St. Paul is unified in opposition to the Republican incumbent as never before. "I don't see how it can help for his reelection," Erlandson said.

Weighing in from the Kerry-Edwards Minnesota campaign was communications director Stacie Paxton, who said the move "isn't surprising, given Randy Kelly's longstanding flirtation with the Republican Party and will have little, if any, impact on the campaign."

Jim Kielkopf, chair of the East Side DFL Party, said "it baffles me that the mayor, a lifelong Democrat with a liberal record on social spending, labor rights, and even gun control would choose this time to support George Bush."

Overt signs of exultation or gloating were missing from the announcement, which was followed by a question-and-answer session with reporters at a patio table. No Bush campaign signs and no high-ranking Republican elected officials were present, although a couple of Minnesota Bush campaign staff members attended.

In a statement released by the Bush-Cheney Minnesota operation, Pawlenty, co-chair of the campaign, praised Kelly for putting "principle before partisan politics."

However, Kelly apparently won't be reticent about his support for long. Today he will join Pawlenty, House Speaker Steve Sviggum, and former state Sen. Bob Lessard, a former DFLer from International Falls who converted to the Independence Party in his final years in the Senate, in a fly-around "Unity Tour" to Duluth and Rochester.

DFL leaders emphasized repeatedly that the loss of Kelly on the presidential race was no surprise.

Particularly in the last week during the Democratic National Convention, Kelly had been sending signals that he might not endorse Kerry. DFLers feared all along that Kelly would somehow replicate his stance in 2002, when he stayed neutral in the race for the U.S. Senate between the late DFL Sen. Paul Wellstone and former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman, who in 1996 converted from Democrat to Republican. Coleman had endorsed Kelly for mayor, helped him win, won that Senate race with President Bush's direct and aggressive help, and is now co-chair of the Bush campaign.

Like Coleman, Kelly has a reputation as moderate-to-liberal on many economic issues but is considered a conservative on social issues such as abortion. And like Coleman, he has often been at odds with the liberal activist base of the DFL Party. Neither received party endorsement in their runs for mayor.

Coleman said in a statement that Kelly "again proved what I have long known: He is a fine man whose first priority is not partisanship but the well-being of St. Paul and the entire nation. Mayor Kelly realizes that jobs are being created and that tax cuts have stimulated that job growth. I applaud him for following his conscience and his concrete convictions."

Polls for months have shown Minnesota to be about as evenly divided as possible and the state is on the short list, along with Iowa and Wisconsin, of crucial battleground states.

If the outcome is decided by a few hundred votes and Bush wins in Minnesota and nationwide, Kelly's support might be considered pivotal and his standing with a reelected administration presumably would be greatly enhanced.

Kelly brushed aside all the speculation about short-term and long-term political consequences, although he implied at one point that his move could be costly to his career. And he insisted that it was mostly a personal decision, driven by his responsibility as "a mayor, as an American, as a husband and a father."

"Whatever the cost of this decision is to me, the expense of remaining quiet in this election year is of far greater consequence to me," he said. "I have done what I can, along with the love and care of my wife, to raise two sons these past two decades. I love them with more of my being than I care to share with you today. And it is with that love that I make this difficult decision and choice."

I have a disgusting confession to make.  I am a closet racist.  I'm so ashamed of myself, because when I'm driving and someone cuts me off (or whatever) the first thing I notice is the "race" that did it.  Or I'll see some black guy walking around my predominantly white neighbourhood, with a big silver chain, and I'll think "bling, bling".  Now here is the deal:  I have no actual dislike toward any race!  Seriously, I treat everybody the same, but I feel as though I've been taught to see people this way.  I notice these racist thoughts as soon as they happen and I'm immediately disgusted with myself.  Not in a guilty way, but in a way that's like, "Jesus Nikki, that isn't your brain thinking, grow up!".

Is there anyone else out there like me?

Quote from: Thrindlebut I feel as though I've been taught to see people this way.
Absolutely. And there's no shame in that, especially if you recognize what the thought or feeling is and where it's coming from.

A few things come to mind... There's that beautiful scene in Bowling for Columbine (perhaps the best in the movie) where the cop in LA turns from the camera and starts suspiciously walking toward an African American family playing in their yard. And then there's the joking comment the recruiters make in F911 when a couple black kids cross the street. Suspicion is on everybody's mind when they see "black people." It's a trained thing. Somebody says "Germany," and what do you think? Hitler? Nazi? You see a black person, and what do you think? Crime? Violence? Poverty? Bling bling? It's social conditiong, and being suspicious of it, noticing it, and actively rejecting it is even harder to learn.

The worst part is that you start training yourself. A black person cuts you off. You look at him, and maybe unconsciously think oh, he's black. When a white person cuts you off, do you think oh, he's white? Of course not. We aren't trained to be suspicious of white people, of course, because white people are in power.

When I walk past an African American person, it's totally different from walking past a white person. I can't ignore the context. And I can't help having some anxiety (if it's some one I don't know), like "what if I do something racist?" Larry David has a brilliant insight into this, by the way.

One time I was driving in busy traffic and I took a left turn at an intersection... but I stopped kind of abruptly because there was some one in the crosswalk who wasn't immediately visible, an African American woman walking with two small children. I'm stopped in the middle of the intersection, and she finishes walking through the intersection very very slowly, glaring intensely into my eyes the whole time, absolutely sure she was the victim of racism. I completely froze and had no idea what to do. It was really an emotionally shocking experience.

But the best way to fight stereotypes is to actually know people. I've had several minority professors in college, people I genuinely admire. And that's really why it's so important to have minority teachers and authority figures... it shatters stereotypes and balances power.

In the "ashamed" department...

replace the federal income tax with a national sales tax.

The Republican from southern Minnesota says it would create a world where no one has to pay income tax -- and only get taxed when they buy stuff.

Gutknecht has co-sponsored a bill that would scrap federal income taxes in favor of a 23-percent federal sales tax. He says he's moved from being a lukewarm supporter to being -- quote -- "a fanatic."

He says it would simplify tax laws as well as eliminate the IRS. But opponents say such a plan would favor the rich, who have more ability to pay higher sales taxes.[/list:u]

Hamline University students vote to ban military recruiters from campus

http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2004/12/

St. Paul, Minn. — Hamline undergraduates voted 80-to-15 in support of a resolution banning military recruiters. Voters included the 39 representatives of student government, and other students. Hamline allows any undergraduate student to vote on resolutions before the Student Congress.

The resolution says the military's policy on gays and lesbians -- the "don't-ask-don't-tell" policy -- is discriminatory and clashes with the school's own policies encouraging diversity.

Graham Lampa, 21, drafted the resolution. The student from Brainerd says the vote illustrates that the school upholds values of equality and anti-discrimination.

"I think that's a positive step towards showing the military and telling the military that we don't agree with their policy. And if more schools join up and keep on pushing this thing forward, then hopefully I think that Hamline will be seen as a pioneering school," he said.

But Junior Nathan Ohler of New Hampshire says the student vote embarrasses him.

"I think that it's basically a disgraceful resolution to begin with, and I don't feel it's appropriate. There's so many good things that stem from the military. In terms of, anybody, coming from a low economic class, can join the military and rise through the wages, rise through the ranks," he said.

The resolution was prompted by a recent ruling in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia. It says a university has a First Amendment right to deny military recruiters access to campus without the risk of losing federal funding.

It's unclear what effect the decision has on states outside the Third Circuit's immediate jurisdiction, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and the Virgin Islands.

The Hamline students sent their resolution to university administrators for action.

But Hamline has $35 million of federal funds at risk, and University Vice President Dan Loritz says the school won't be doing anything until the courts provide more clarity.

"It's a situation where we have the needs of all our students, in terms of those federal funds. And the federal government has a policy that says that if we don't conform to the Solomon Amendment, they would remove those funds which would be very difficult for our students," he said.

Loritz says the administration may consider the ban if the ruling takes wider jurisdiction.

While most military recruiting takes place in high schools, before students have decided on college, the military considers law schools and other professional schools excellent places to recruit officers.

Department of Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Joe Richard says the DOD will appeal the circuit court's ruling.

He says "don't ask, don't tell" is current law and can't be changed unless lawmakers move to do so. He says denying recruiters access to campus only penalizes students and their job prospects.

"The Department of Defense is following the law as prescribed by the U.S. Congress. So, therefore, any suggestion or notion that our policies are discriminatory, just flies in the face of the facts. That's why any effort to ban military recruiters puts your federal funds at risk. That's our argument. That's our contention," he said.

Hamline is the only school in Minnesota since the Third Circuit ruling where students have moved to bar military recruiters from campus.

There is precedent when it comes to enforcing school diversity policies. In 2001, Hamline dropped association with the Boy Scouts of America on the grounds that their policies against gay and lesbian people contradicted the University's own diversity policy.

A new addition to the shame column: Senator Mark Dayton. (He is, by the way, part of the Dayton family, which started Target.)

He stood against Senator Barbara Boxer today when she (a lone voice in the senate) contested the Ohio vote. It's really disappointing, because he was relentless with Rumsfeld. I expected more.

It launched yesterday, and as I expected, they hit this one out of the park.

You can listen online here (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/thecurrent/).

The format is wonderful, the music is great, and there are no commercials. I really like it so far... and it's the only music radio station around here worth listening to.

My only complaints so far are that it's schizophrenically eclectic (which I could live with) and most of the music in the first two days has been upbeat (which is understandable and probably temporary).

Al Franken will announce within two hours whether he's running for the Senate in 2006 for the Minnesota seat that will be vacated by Mark Dayton. (This would be two years earlier than he planned.)

My guess is that he is. He's wearing a suit and he brought reporters into the studio.

That was funny. He announced that he's not running in 2006. It was a publicity stunt.

He's still running in 2008, though... that's a sure thing. I'm kind of relieved that he's going against Norm Coleman in 2008 instead, because Norm Coleman is the most disgusting man alive.

How many years does it take to brainwash a child into thinking that "sweet tea" is drinkable?

Oh, and NASCAR.  What's up with that?  Seriously.

Just curious.

As for Northerners, I live in the Northwest, Seattle area, and up here we don't have such things as "accents".  The Northwest accent is defined by its lack of any sort of regional twang or patois.  We all sound like news anchors.

A joke, to break the ice: How do Southern farmers find sheep in tall grass?

Veeeeery satisfying.

Anyway, originally from the north, lived in the south most of my life, stereotypes are only somewhat true.  Sweet tea: good in moderation.  It's called "soda," not "pop."  Not everyone likes NASCAR.  It only seems like it.

this is an article from a communist newspaper. the writing isn't great but this article has more of the facts in one place than most of the other stuff i've seen.

http://www.rwor.org/a/096/jena-six-en.html (http://www.rwor.org/a/096/jena-six-en.html)

Jim Crow Injustice in Jena, Louisiana
by Alice Woodward

The story of the Jena Six began on September 1, 2006 -- a hot late summer day, in the southern town of Jena, Louisiana. Bryant Purvis, a Black high school student, asked permission to sit beneath the shade tree known as the "white tree," in front of the town's high school. It was unspoken law that this shady area was for whites only during school breaks. The vice principal said nothing was stopping anyone. So Black students sat underneath the tree, challenging the established authority of segregation and racism.

The next day, hanging from the tree, were three ropes, in school colors, each tied to make a noose. The events set in motion by those nooses led to a schoolyard fight. And that fight led to the conviction, on June 28, 2007, of a Black student at Jena High School for charges that can bring up to 22 years in prison. Mychal Bell, a 16-year-old sophomore football star at the time he was arrested, was convicted by an all-white jury, without a single witness being called on his behalf. The remaining five Black students still face serious charges stemming from the fight, their lawyers and parents estimate they will go to trial this fall.

While this particular story begins in September of last year, the background story goes way back. In a previous article in Revolution, I used the "white tree" of Jena as a metaphor for all the racism, and systematic oppression of Black people, which dates back to the founding of this country. Right now, that is what is being enforced with the persecution of these young Black men.

* * *

The town of Jena, like rural and urban areas throughout this country, is a segregated place. In an article called, "Racism Goes on Trial Again in America's Deep South," the British newspaper The Observer (Sunday, May 20, 2007) described: "Jena's major industry is growing and marketing junk pine. Walk down the usually deserted main street and you will not find many Black employees. [Caseptla] Bailey, 56, is a former air force officer and holder of a business management degree. 'I couldn't even get a job in Jena as a bank teller,' she said. 'Look at the banks and the best white-collar jobs and you'll see only white and red necks in those collars.'" The local barber is still a white-only business, they have never cut the hair of a Black person.

I spoke with Mychal Bell's father, Marcus Jones, by phone, and he gave me a picture of how this breaks down in the Jena schools: "Young white kids, most of them don't have contact with Black people until they get to high school. They got a school, their junior high here, what they call Fellowship, and another school called Nebo—a little neighborhood that is part of Jena—they got an elementary school—a junior high school, or a middle school—one or the other. Those schools are being funded by government funds, but no Black kids go there.

"They don't have contact, any interaction with Black kids until they get to high school. When white kids leave their school, and get to high school here, this is their first time ever playing ball with Black kids, being in classroom with Black kids, talking to Black kids, if they even talk to them, which I doubt."

I mentioned to Marcus Jones that I had recently seen the movie Remember the Titans (about the integration of a school and its football team in 1971 in Virginia), and that the situation he was describing reminded me of scenes in the beginning of that movie. He kind of laughed, and said, "Some of that Titan's stuff is not too far from this."

Protesting the Noose Incident

In response to the noose incident, several Black students, among them star players on the football team, spontaneously staged a sit-in and protest, under the tree. The principal reacted by bringing in the white district attorney, Reed Walters, and 10 local police officers to an all-school assembly. Marcus Jones described the assembly:

"At any activity done in the auditorium—anything—Blacks sit on one side, whites on the other side, okay? The DA tells the principal to call the students in the auditorium. They get in there. The DA tells the Black students, he's looking directly at the Black students—remember, whites on one side, Blacks on the other side—he's looking directly at the Black students. He told them to keep their mouths shut about the boys hanging their nooses up. If he hears anything else about it, he can make their lives go away with the stroke of his pen."

DA Walters concluded that the students should "work it out on their own." Police officers roamed the halls of the school that week, and tensions simmered throughout the fall semester.

In November, as football season came to a close, the main school building was mysteriously burned down. In the wake of this, tensions erupted in a weekend of whites lashing out to enforce white supremacy in Jena.

On a Friday night, Robert Bailey, a 17-year-old Black student and football player, was invited to a dance at the "Fair Barn," a hall considered to be "white." When he walked in, without warning he was punched in the face, knocked on the ground and attacked by a group of white youth. Only one of the white youth was arrested—he was ultimately given probation and asked to apologize.

The night after that, a 22-year-old white man, along with two friends, pulled a gun on Bailey and two of his friends at a local gas station. The Black youths wrestled the gun from him to prevent him from using it. They were arrested and charged with theft, and the white man went free. The following Monday students returned to school. It was then that a fight broke out that sent one white student to the hospital. He was treated, released, and seen at a social event that evening. In contrast to how the authorities handled the assault on Robert Bailey by white students – where one white student got probation and apologized – for this incident, six Black students face serious criminal charges and decades in jail.

Marcus Jones told me what happened: "The next day, when they get back to school, the Barker boy called one of them a 'nigger.' We have a statement from a white kid, saying that he was right there when he called him 'nigger boy' or something like that. They charged them with second-degree attempted murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree attempted murder. Alright, the boy was knocked unconscious. But by the time they called for the medic to get there, he was walking. They took him to the hospital. He don't stay in there probably no more than an hour, tops. They released him, parents come to the hospital to get him, everything, took like a whole hour. Later on that evening, they held the ring ceremony, you know where they get their rings—he comes up there all fine and dandy. He had a little black eye, little bruise on his lip, you know, but he wasn't nowhere close to no death. He laughed and talked with everyone up there, and everything."

Justin Barker was allegedly knocked down, punched, and kicked by a number of Black students. In December of 2006 six Black students—Robert Bailey Junior, Theo Shaw, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis, Mychal Bell, and a still unidentified minor, allegedly the attackers of Justin Barker—were arrested, charged with attempted second degree manslaughter, and expelled from school.

The outrageously high bail ranged from $70,000-$138,000, leaving most of them stuck in jail for months. Mychal was 16 years old at the time he was arrested, the judge removed him from the juvenile facilities and brought him to the Jena Parish jail to charge him as an adult.

A Jim Crow Trial

What kind of trial did Mychal Bell get in the town of Jena, Louisiana?

Without any explanation, both of Mychal Bell's parents were put on the "witness list" and therefore were not allowed into the courtroom. They were never called to testify, but they were not allowed to go into the trial. In this way those in charge of this courtroom prevented Mychal Bell's parents from attending the trial of their own son.

Mychal was judged by an all-white jury, in a courtroom run by a white judge. Whites sat with Justin Barker and his white lawyer on one side. Blacks sat with defendant Mychal Bell, who was represented by a court-appointed attorney.

The prosecutor called 16 witnesses, mostly white students. The court-appointed defense attorney called none. Barker's attorney argued that Bell's tennis shoes on his feet were a "dangerous weapon."

The trial was so outrageous that when a Louisiana TV station polled viewers, 62% said that Mychal Bell was not getting a fair trial.

Mychal Bell was convicted of two felonies: aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated second-degree battery. Mychal faces up to 22 years in prison for a schoolyard fight. Compare this to the white students who attacked Robert Bailey at the Fair Barn and have been allowed to go free with barely a slap on the wrist.

The threat of a similar so-called trial hangs over the heads of the other accused Black students.

Marcus Jones said, "Now remember, who created this atmosphere of this Black and white stuff? The DA done that. 'Cause when he let those boys get away with hanging those nooses, and when they had the fight with the Barker boy, he was telling them, 'Listen, you niggers, don't put your hands on nobody white. If you do, I'm gonna show you. I'll put charges on those boys.' And lately he was saying, 'It's alright for those whites to do what they want to do, because I ain't going to do nothing to them.' Black kids see he didn't do nothing to them about the noose incident, you know? So he's the one that created all this racial tension here, you see. He let one race slide. But you're going to try to enforce the law on another race."

In an interview from an upcoming documentary that aired on Democracy Now (7/10/07), Marcus Jones showed for the camera the stack of college scholarship offers his son Mychal had received to play football at many different schools. Marcus Jones commented solemnly, "One of the best lessons that my son could learn, that's one of the best lessons, to know what it is to be Black now, ya know, if this don't teach him what it is to be Black now, I don't know what will. He's 17 now, he's got a lot of life ahead of him. The day he sets foot out of jail, I'm going to tell him again, you know what it is to be Black now, here it is."

Free the Jena Six!

In scenes from the documentary aired on Democracy Now, Caseptla Bailey, the mother of Robert Bailey, who also awaits his trial remarked, "They want to take these kids, my son as well as all these other children, lock them up and throw away the key, that's a tradition, for Black males, so they want to keep that tradition going because they want to keep institutionalized slavery alive and well."

In the face of this heart wrenching and outrageous reality, a battle is being fought to defend the Jena Six. Family, friends, and supporters of the young men are protesting and struggling. The Black community in Jena and people from across Louisiana and Texas have come together to support the Jena 6 and fight the injustice of their trials. People have put their lives on hold, and churches have opened their doors.

Marcus Jones told me, "I'm still in need of a lawyer for my son and one more of the kids. So we opened up a defense account for trying to get some good legal representation. Because my son was really just sold out by the court-appointed lawyer. Oh man, that's so devastating. So now we're just trying to generate some money to get good legal representation."

All those who oppose racism, all those who watched in horror or themselves lived through the reality of Hurricane Katrina, all those who joined the debate around the Imus incident in opposition to racism and oppression, and those who have watched with horror as the clock was turned back 50 years by a Supreme Court ruling, undermining and doing away with what little rights were given by Brown v. Board of Education should join in demanding the charges be dropped against all of the Jena 6, and that Mychal Bell's conviction be reversed!

I had not heard of that incident before, so it was an interesting read.  However, if that's the article with the most facts in one place, then that is sad, as it is obviously not interested in any side but one, and is not interested in delving any further into the matter than just demonstrating general outrage.  This is clearly not even half of the real story, and yet the writer urges us to demand that all of the charges be dropped, which is just as bad as what that all-white jury supposedly did.

I figure that's what you mean by the writing not being great.

But the situation itself is an interesting one in this day and age, and for a lot more reasons than just white people not liking black people and treating them differently (which is not that interesting).  The particular chemistry that arouses such a situation given the assumable media response is really the more curious matter.  Did these White Devils not realize that this would, of course, end up as national news?

Okay, I think I'm comfortable enough here to let you creeps know where I'm from. Not like you care, but I kind of have an ulterior motive for posting in this thread. So I'll stick to Neon's original rules, which was a really good idea! what was it, ten years ago? And then I'll get to that other thing.

I live in Syracuse, New York.

I'm proud of:

The first projected film in America was shown here:

"America's very first display of a projected
film image was arguably in Syracuse. Eugene Lauste ran a 12-minute
movie on March 28, 1896, in the Everson Building, 110 S. Salina St., 26
days before Thomas Edison's first such demonstration as the concluding
act of a vaudeville show in New York City on April 23."

I read it in a book. Look it up (http://www.syracusenewtimes.com/newyork/article-2157-screen-gems.html). (scroll down) Believe it or not.
