We have just received this press information from one of our DVD contacts, so we thought we would share it with you. The information is from the 2003 DVD Awards and certainly includes some worthy winners. Anyway, here is the information in full:
DEC. 2 | LOS ANGELES--James Earl Jones, Jessica Alba, Bob Hoskins, Martin Short and Jack Black were among those honored at the 2003 DVD Exclusive Awards on Tuesday night, receiving awards for performances in movies that premiered exclusively on DVD this year.
The Alien Quadrilogy matched The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Special Extended Edition with two of the top honors for special editions, and Dick Van Dyke was on hand to collect the award for Best TV Show on DVD--more than 40 years after the broadcast debut of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Buena Vista Home Entertainment's 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure and the star-studded indie film Interstate 60 from Back to the Future writer/producer Bob Gale took top honors for animated and live-action DVD movies, respectively.
Hosted by actress Jenny McCarthy, who came out wearing a dress made of 25 DVDs, the fast-paced show will be televised on FX at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Dec. 9. A crowd of about 700 at the Wiltern LG theater attended the event, which was produced by Dick Clark Productions.
It all began on the red carpet, where unique vehicles from this year's DVD movies rolled up, including Scooby-Doo's Mystery Machine, original and new Mini Coopers representing both versions of The Italian Job on DVD, the Death Machine from Animal House and street rods from 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Inside, in addition to the award winners, the show was filled with tributes to filmmakers Michael Bay and Ridley Scott, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Comics pioneer Stan Lee and franchises Scooby-Doo, American Pie and The Lion King.
There was also a video package of clips from DVDs featuring all manner of classic music from Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby to the Beatles, George Harrison, the Who and Led Zeppelin.
The Who's Roger Daltrey followed the salute in person to present the award for Best Original Song in a DVD premiere movie, which went to Black's outrageous and profane "Golden Rule Song" from New Line Home Entertainment's Run Ronnie Run! A handful of writers accepted the award, led by Bob Odenkirk, who was also nominated for best director of Melvin Goes to Dinner, the latter making its commercial debut Dec. 16 on DVD.
Fox's Alien Quadrilogy was named Best Overall DVD, Classic Movie, and it also picked up an award for Best Audio Commentary by the cast and crew of Alien. The presentation came on the day the serpentine nine-disc set debuted in stores.
The 600 DVD Exclusive Academy members, who are filmmakers and TV and DVD producers, judge new DVD releases all year long and are sent advance copies of DVDs that are being released late in the year.
More than 11 titles picked up awards in 23 categories, including five for 101 Dalmatians II, for which Short and character design supervisor Dan Root won the unique joint voice actor and animator award for Best Animated Character Performance in the role of a fashion designer called Lars.
Buena Vista's recently released Finding Nemo DVD won three awards, for menu design; games and interactivities; and deleted scenes, outtakes and bloopers.
Alba, Hoskins and Brenda Blethyn were named best actress, actor and supporting actor, respectively, for their work in New Line's British period drama The Sleeping Dictionary. The movie also won for Best Cinematography.
The Best Actor award went to Jones for his performance in Lions Gate Home Entertainment's psychological drama Finder's Fee, written and directed by Survivor host Jeff Probst, who announced nominees for Best Supporting Actor via video from the secret location of the next season of TV programs.
Gale accepted awards for producer of Screen Media's Interstate 60 as well as for Best Screenplay.
In one of the surprise awards, Michael Arrick's documentary West Side Memories on MGM's West Side Story beat other nominated behind-the-scenes programs from Alien Quadrilogy, Finding Nemo, New Line's Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Paramount Home Entertainment's The Indiana Jones Trilogy.
