The Oscars are looking awfully white this year.

The Oscars are looking awfully white this year.

Don't worry, the host will make a joke acknowledging that and it'll be fine.

Very happy with and somewhat surprised by all the Mad Max love.

DiCaprio is a slam dunk, right? Not much popular competition in his category.

Reel

It makes me so happy that Tarantino didn't get any love in the major categories, because he thinks he's a shoo in everytime. The academy is like "We gave you two oscars, allllrrriiiggghhttt? Can you back off the ceremony a lil bit? You're making Jennifer Lawrence uncomfortable with your incessant 'pitching'"

Best Animated Short Film

    We Can't Live without Cosmos

if you click the photo you go to the New Yorker page with the short. it's a dash over 15min long. there's zero dialogue.

i made it worth my time and now i feel better connected to contemporary graphic novel sensibilities, got my finger on the pulse and whatnot.

Just Withnail

I remember seeing that somewhere and loving it. Very goofy and very moving.

03

um well....that was incredibly racist.

edit: i realize now that was super vague.
i was referring to chris rock going 'my six daughters are going to come out and sell girl scout cookies to rich white people'. i mean seriously, what the fuck was that? was that supposed to be humorous?
i was around twelve people and we all just got quiet with our mouths slightly open for about ten seconds.

THAT offended you? The only thing "wrong" with that bit was arguably it went on a bit too long.

Chris Rock was great. I actually thought this Oscars was relatively painless. I'm glad Mad Max won stuff and the Revenant didn't win best picture.

I'm also glad as a board our Oscars thread has yet to surpass one page.

Jeremy Blackman

Broke this up a little so it's not a wall of text.

N [29|Feb 01:57 AM]:   Need to watch The Revenant. Still seems odd that this is the movie he gets an Oscar for. At least people will stop making memes about it.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:20 AM]:   Nah, it's a legitimately great performance. Don't believe the naysayers.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:20 AM]:   I'm not a big Leo fan, either. Hated him in The Aviator.
polkablues [29|Feb 02:21 AM]:   I mostly don't like how it furthers the perception that more acting equals better acting.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:24 AM]:   True, but I'll take this kind of "more acting" over his Howard Hughes any day.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:31 AM]:   Giving Leo his Oscar for this performance was probably a better choice than giving PSH his Oscar for Capote.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:32 AM]:   I can think of 10 better PSH performances
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:33 AM]:   There's, what, arguably 0-2 better DiCaprio performances, right?
Lottery [29|Feb 02:39 AM]:   I'm a half-naysayer. It's a decent performance- like honestly good...but it ain't no Gilbert Grape.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:40 AM]:   He'll always be Romeo to me  [editor's note: this was a joke]
N [29|Feb 02:40 AM]:   Wow. I'm pretty hyped for The Revenant then. Didnt know it would actually be a great movie. Its a pretty quick turnaround for Inarritu as well.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:40 AM]:   Yeah, didn't like that one.
N [29|Feb 02:40 AM]:   Just as in Birdman was only like a year ago.

Lottery [29|Feb 02:40 AM]:   Oh, The Revenant ain't no godlike masterpiece at all- far from it, but it's a hell of a spectacle.
N [29|Feb 02:41 AM]:   I'm all for a spectacle.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:41 AM]:   Yeah it's maybe my 4th favorite of the year or something. But I kind of love it for what it is.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:41 AM]:   Chivo Lubezki hat-trick. Dude's a genius. But he couldn't have done it without Terry Malick.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:41 AM]:   Or 5 or 6, I don't know
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:42 AM]:   I'm bitter about George Miller. That's my takeaway.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:42 AM]:   Malick is the true creator of the modern floaty scenic school.
N [29|Feb 02:42 AM]:   Sorry to break topic, just wondering if anybody else here has seen Entertainment yet? Seriously amazing film. Just putting that out there, so far best thing I've seen all year.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:42 AM]:   Mad Max did pretty darn well regardless.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:42 AM]:   I thought it was great but never thought the Academy would give a shit about it.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:43 AM]:   The voters just probably didn't know George Miller well enough
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:43 AM]:   Not enough Babe 2 Pig In the City fans

Lottery [29|Feb 02:44 AM]:   Part of me really wanted DiCaprio to lose. Torn between wanting the tired meme to end but also never die.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:45 AM]:   Anyway, how about that WoWS performance.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:45 AM]:   World of Warcraft performed?
Lottery [29|Feb 02:46 AM]:   No, World of WorldStar. Duh.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:46 AM]:   Wolf had some his most surprising and most annoying moments.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:47 AM]:   There are parts of his typical acting skillset which actually annoys me.
Jeremy Blackman [29|Feb 02:48 AM]:   The beauty of The Revenant is that he shuts his mouth for the most part
Lottery [29|Feb 02:49 AM]:   Joaquin Phoenix is still the best actor of that particular generation. Tom Hardy, slotted into the top 5ish as well.
Lottery [29|Feb 02:53 AM]:   https://31.media.tumblr.com/64c999f685667a59807286e73484c37d/tumblr_mirh33nocB1qddpzeo2_250.gif
Reelist [29|Feb 10:41 AM]:   It was the first oscar ceremony i missed in something like, 30 years. A lot of good movies in there, but I just wasnt in the mood to have my night draaaaggggggeeeddddd out like they do
