Does anyone else think that Sandler's acting in PDL isn't so much of a departure as everyone seems to think? All the reviews go on about how he's suddenly become a Serious Actor, but he's really just essentially the same character he always plays but in a significantly better film, with a significantly better script, with significantly more interesting things happening around him...
PTA says that he wanted to write a screenplay for Sandler's persona and that's what he's done. PDL is absolutely wonderful, and Barry Egan is a great character, but is Sandler's performance really THAT different to - for example - his Wedding Singer one...?

For the record: For the most part, I love his other movies too.

I think of Barry Eagan as the same type of character without the over the top slapstick.  Sandler has a comedy style built on being the meek funnyman most of the time and the angry man occasionally ("The price is WRONG!").  In PDL, he's the meek man, trying to cover over the angry man, inadvertently being the funnyman.  Same skills, but rearranged and muted to make believable.  Barry Eagan might very well exist in the life portrayed in PDL, where Longfellow Deeds isn't even supposed to be a plausable character.

James L. Brooks Making "Spanglish"

James L. Brooks will helm and produce his script "Spanglish" for Columbia Pictures in his first directorial outing since 1997's "As Good As It Gets".

Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni are in negotiations to star in the pic, which will shoot at the end of the year.

Written by Brooks, "Spanglish" is a romantic comedy about a married couple. The film also includes a major role for a Latina actress and the production is conducting a global talent search to find an actress for the role.

Brooks also directed "Terms of Endearment", "Broadcast News" and "I'll Do Anything". He most recently produced "Riding In Cars With Boys".

Brooks has proved selective in his choice of projects. He's directed three titles since his feature directing bow with the 1983 "Terms of Endearment", which won five Oscars.

In addition to his own films, as well as others like "Jerry Maguire" and "Say Anything", Brooks' Gracie Films shingle produces "The Simpsons", which is entering its 15th season.

If a deal can be made on "Spanglish", this will be Sandler's next pic. He's currently in production on "Fifty First Kisses" opposite Drew Barrymore.

As much as I appreciate you resurrecting a (rather uninteresting, negelcted, typo-in-the-title) thread I made three months ago, MacGuffin: that news doesn't have that much to do with my subject, does it...?!  :-D

Maybe it's just the nearest to a Sandler thread we have. Woohoo: perhaps my shitty thread can have son-of-God-like rebirth!

i agree with you.  hasnt paul even said he just wanted to make an adam sandler movie that was shot really well (or something to that effect)?  as in, he's not trying to coax some sort of oscar performance out of him.  he just wants him to do his AS thing.

(first off) Hey MacGuffin, where did you get that info from?

I don't really know what to make of 'Spanglish'. It seems that twice a month there's news about a 'new Sandler flick' but nothing happens about it. Here's the titles that have shown up (to do with Sandler) in the last few months:

'Soloman Grundy' (Danny Boyle comedy)
'Son of the Bride' (comedy remake)
'Good Cook Likes Music' (romantic comedy)
'Untitled baseball comedy' (uh, yep)
'Kopps' (comedy remake)
'Master P: Kung Fu Panda' (animated comedy)
'Nine Bastards' (comedy)
'Collateral' (Michael Mann/Tom Cruise thriller)

....And Tarantino's 'Inglorious Bastards' is still in the air. 'Spanglish', 'Inglorious' and 'Collateral' sound the best..........Brooks, Tarantino and Mann rule.

Mark your calendars.  According to the new Premiere, Spanglish will be released December 17th.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Adam was recently on The Late Late Show where Judd Apatow was filling in as guest host. He told a brief anecdote about shooting a nude scene in PDL. I could summarize, but it's probably better if you just listen to him tell the story (relevant bit starts at 22:21):
