Rip Torn Arrested Outside NYC for DUI

Rip Torn, who was acquitted of drunken-driving charges two years ago in New York City, was arrested again Monday in a city suburb after a collision, state police said.

No one was hurt in the crash in North Salem, Trooper Edward Gillespie said. The 75-year-old character actor refused a sobriety test and would be arraigned on a charge of driving while intoxicated, Gillespie said.

Torn's publicist, Dick Guttman, said from Los Angeles that he had not heard from Torn and could not comment.

Torn, a Texas native, has movie, television and stage credits dating to 1956. He has been in such recent movies as "Marie Antoinette" and "Dodgeball" and had big hits with the "Men in Black" movies. He won an Emmy Award in 1996 for playing the hard-drinking producer on TV's "The Larry Sanders Show."

In 2004, Torn was acquitted when jurors said the prosecution failed to prove that he was drinking before his fender-bender with a taxi. A police videotape showed Torn cursing and berating officers before turning down a sobriety test, but his lawyer said that was due to anger, not drinking.

When he was acquitted, he shook the hands of the male jurors, kissed the hands of the female jurors and said, "I love New York."

Nicole Richie arrested for DUI in L.A.

Nicole Richie was arrested early Monday for investigation of driving under the influence after her car was reported headed the wrong way on a freeway.

Richie, 25, star of "The Simple Life" reality series and daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie, was arrested without incident at 1:45 a.m. (PST) after she failed a field sobriety test given by California Highway Patrol officers, CHP Officer Todd Workman said.

Richie's 2005 black Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle was stopped in the car pool lane of State Highway 134 in Burbank.

Other motorists had placed 911 emergency calls around 12:30 a.m. (PST) about a car headed against traffic on the freeway, Workman said. Descriptions of the vehicle matched Richie's. When officers arrived, they found her car facing the right direction.

Richie was placed in the passenger seat of her car, which was found to be operable, and an officer drove the car off the freeway.

"She volunteered the information that she had smoked marijuana and taken Vicodin," the prescription painkiller, Workman said. No drugs were found on her or in the car.

Richie was booked in Glendale for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, tested for drugs and released later Monday morning, Workman said. The results of the test haven't been determined, he said.

Bail was set at $15,000, but Richie was released on her own recognizance, Glendale police Agent John Balian said. A Feb. 7 arraignment in Glendale Superior Court was scheduled.

Nicole Perna, a publicist for Richie, replied to an e-mail requesting comment, saying that there would be none.

Richie told officers she weighed 85 pounds and was 5-foot-1, Workman said. Her driver's license listed her weight as 100 pounds.

In an interview earlier this year with Vanity Fair magazine, Richie acknowledged that she is "too thin" and was receiving treatment to gain weight.

The drivers who placed the 911 calls are potential witnesses about whether Richie was driving the wrong way, and authorities were trying to contact them, Workman said. Richie could face an additional charge depending on the information obtained, he said.

Misdemeanor arrests by the CHP in Burbank are routinely handled by Glendale police and courts, Workman said.

Burbank is 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Richie is best known for starring with sometime-friend Paris Hilton in "The Simple Life."

Hilton faces her own legal troubles: She was charged with misdemeanor drunken driving after her Sept. 7 arrest in Hollywood. Her arraignment is set for Dec. 20.

Big fine for underage 'Girls Gone Wild'
By MELISSA NELSON, Associated Press WriterWed Dec 13, 5:51 PM ET

The "Girls Gone Wild" video empire agreed to pay $1.6 million and its founder was sentenced to community service Wednesday for filming drunken, underage girls in the raunchy videos.

Mantra Films Inc. pleaded guilty in a case that stemmed from its use of two 17-year-olds in its DVDs and videos, which feature young women baring their breasts in public. The videos at issue were filmed on Panama City Beach during spring break in 2003.

U.S. District Judge Richard Smoak ordered Mantra's multimillionaire founder, Joe Francis, to read aloud in court a victim impact statement from one of the women, who said she was emotionally tormented by her appearance on a "Girls Gone Wild" video and that the video damaged her relationship with her family.

Smoak told Francis he added the community service because it did not appear a fine would be a meaningful punishment.

The fine represents less than 3 percent of Mantra's profits since 2002 and only 12 percent of Mantra's 2005 profits, Smoak said.

"It does not take a very brave man to go out and corner a girl in the middle of spring break who had four drinks," Smoak told Francis.

Francis, 33, said his policy has always been not to film girls under 18 and that the two filmed in Panama City lied about their ages. He later left court without speaking to reporters.

According to court papers, Mantra Films, based in Santa Monica, Calif., admitted violating record-keeping and labeling laws while distributing videos during all of 2002 and part of 2003.

The judge ordered Francis, his company president, general counsel and chief financial officer to each perform eight hours of community service monthly for the next 30 months. But Smoak said the corporate officers could avoid the obligation, giving Francis the option of "stepping up" and serving 16 hours a month of community service by himself in their place.

Attorney Aaron Dyer, representing Francis and the company, said he did not know if Francis would take on the entire sentence himself.

Smoak ordered the company to issue a press release about its federal offenses and to publish the release in the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and The News Herald of Panama City.

Francis also faces a Jan. 22 sentencing hearing in federal court in Los Angeles on similar charges in which he has agreed to pay $500,000 in fines.

Also pending against Francis are state felony charges in which he is accused of using children in sexual performances. Those counts stem from the same 2003 filming at the heart of Wednesday's pleas.

"Immediately after the ruling, Francis took out his wallet and paid the entire $1.6 million to the judge in cash.  He then tipped the bailiff an additional $750,000 and was helicoptered to his solid gold home, where he spent the rest of the day nailing seventeen-year-old girls on a bed of money, despite looking like Brendan Fraser's retarded half-brother."

Former boxer Tyson arrested on DUI, cocaine charges

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of cocaine in Arizona, police said on Friday.

Sgt. Larry Hall of the Buckeye Police Department said Tyson was arrested early Friday morning in Scottsdale, 10 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, after he nearly struck another vehicle as he left the driveway of a private home.

"The vehicle he almost struck was actually a sheriff's vehicle," Hall said. "He's been charged with DUI drugs and possession of a controlled substance, cocaine. It was found on him and in his car."

Tyson was being held in a Phoenix jail and is due to appear in court on Friday, police said.

"He will probably see the judge later this morning and either be released or post bond," Hall said.

The 40-year-old boxer known as "Iron Mike" became Heavyweight Champion of the World when he was 21, but was later banned from fighting for a year and fined $2.85 million after he bit off part of an opponent's ear during a match in 1997.

"(Tyson) was actually very cooperative, very calm, and just acted like a complete gentleman," Hall said.

The police officer who arrested Tyson was from Buckeye, 35 miles west of Phoenix, and had been working in Scottsdale on a DUI task force, Hall said.

Tyson, who has a long history of legal troubles, was convicted in 1992 for the rape of a beauty pageant queen in an Indianapolis hotel room.

He was sentenced to six years in prison and released in 1995 after serving three years.

Tyson retired from boxing last year after losing to journeyman Kevin McBride in Washington, D.C. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Tyson left the ring with a 50-6 record with 44 knockouts.

Brandy involved in Los Angeles crash

Actress and R&B singer Brandy was involved in a fatal, four-car accident on a Los Angeles freeway last month that started when her sports utility vehicle hit another car, police said on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old former star of the TV comedy "Moesha" was not injured, but the driver of the car she rear-ended with her Land Rover in the December 30 crash died, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was identified as Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, a married mother of one, said CHP spokesman Leland Tang.

No charges or arrests have been made in connection with the accident, and no formal determination has been made as to what caused the crash, which was first reported by the celebrity news Web site TMZ.com.

A statement issued by Brandy's publicist said: "She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased" and asks the media to "respect the privacy of everyone involved at this time."

The singer-actress, whose full name is Brandy Norwood, was alone in her vehicle and no alcohol or drugs were involved, Tang said.

Brandy told officers she was driving at about 65 miles per hour before the crash occurred.

"We've impounded all four vehicles, and the outcome of the mechanical inspection is coming to us today or tomorrow," Tang said. "Barring any mechanical difficulties on Brandy's part ... then there's the very high probability that she is the party most at fault or the contributing party."

Brandy, a native of Mississippi, burst on the recording scene with her self-tilted debut album in 1994, launching such hits as "I Wanna Be Down," "Baby" and "Brokenhearted." Her fourth album, "Afrodisiac," was released in 2004 with a lead single, "Talk About Our Love," produced by Kanye West.

Last year, she served on the panel of judges for NBC's summer show "America's Got Talent."

Ryan O'Neal Accused of Assaulting Son

Oscar-nominated actor Ryan O'Neal was arrested for investigation of assaulting his adult son at the actor's Malibu home over the weekend, officials said.

Deputies and paramedics were called to O'Neal's Malibu residence at 12:30 a.m. Saturday "regarding a battery that had occurred," said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. John Benedict.

"Deputies determined ... Griffin O'Neal, his son, had been assaulted by his father," Benedict said.

The elder O'Neal, 65, was arrested and accused of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was released on a $50,000 bond.

It was unclear what started the dispute, but O'Neal's manager, Neil Hassman, claimed the actor was defending himself after his son began "wildly swinging a fireplace poker." Griffin O'Neal's pregnant girlfriend was slightly injured in the incident, and was treated at a hospital and released, Hassman said. He maintained that her injuries were caused by the younger O'Neal.

"It is unfortunate that what should have been an internal family disagreement was escalated to the point that Ryan felt he had to defend himself from Griffin's aggressive, extremely menacing physical behavior," Hassman said in a statement to "The Insider"

Griffin O'Neal could not be reached for comment; there was no listing for his phone number.

The twice-divorced Ryan O'Neal went from a TV soap opera to an Oscar-nominated role in "Love Story." He also appeared in films including "Paper Moon," "Barry Lyndon," "Green Ice" and "Zero Effect."

O'Neal had two children with his first wife, Joanna Moore: actor Griffin O'Neal and actress Tatum O'Neal, his co-star in the 1973 movie "Paper Moon," for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress. He was romantically involved with Farrah Fawcett for years; they never married but had one son, Redmond.

Griffin O'Neal, 42, was given an 18-day jail sentence for not performing 400 hours of community service ordered by the judge who found him guilty of reckless boating in the 1986 accident that killed Gian-Carlo Coppola, the son of director Francis Ford Coppola.

Griffin O'Neal also pleaded no contest to a drunken driving charge in 1989 and was sentenced to probation. In 1992, he pleaded no contest to charges he shot at his estranged girlfriend's unoccupied car. At the time, he agreed to spend a year in a live-in drug rehabilitation program and serve five years on probation.

Omar Sharif sentenced to anger management in hitting of valet
The actor must also serve two years' probation.

Actor Omar Sharif was ordered Tuesday to attend anger management classes and serve two years' probation after pleading no contest to hitting a Beverly Hills parking valet.

The plea to a single misdemeanor battery charge was entered by Sharif's attorney, Harland W. Braun, because Sharif was in Egypt.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard Stone also ordered Sharif to pay a $100 fine.

Sharif, best known for his roles in the 1960s films "Dr. Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia," struck valet Juan Anderson outside Mastro's Steakhouse on Cañon Drive on June 12, 2005.

Anderson said Sharif, 74, became upset when his Porsche sport utility vehicle was not waiting for him. His lawsuit alleged that Sharif struck him in the face.

Braun said Anderson became upset when Sharif offered to tip him with European currency.

Sharif lives in Egypt and France, Braun said, and visits Los Angeles less often than once a year. Braun had requested that Sharif testify by satellite, but the prosecutor opposed the request, which was rejected by the judge.

Braun said Sharif "would rather have tried the case, but it was impractical to fly in round-trip to testify." The 15 mandatory counseling sessions Sharif will undergo would take less time than the trip to Los Angeles, Braun said.

A district attorney spokeswoman, Jane Robison, said Sharif's sentence was "an appropriate resolution to this case."

He was released after posting $15,000 bail and ordered to appear in court next month, Lopez said.

No one was injured in the collision. Liotta was alone in his car, Lopez said.

A message left at the office of Liotta's publicist Matt Labov was not immediately returned.

Liotta stars with Tim Allen and John Travolta in the buddy comedy "Wild Hogs," set for release March 2. He is best known for playing gangster Henry Hill in the 1990 movie "Goodfellas."
