Title: I got the PDL DVD - The definitive thread
Post by: aurora on June 19, 2003, 04:50:16 AM
Hey all,

Picked up the PDL DVD today... damn it is fine!!

Still havn't checked everything out yet

The book just sits in the middle of the case which sucks - there should be a little pocket

The Mattress Man commerical is pretty funny... not as good as the Frank TJ Mackey one though!!

--

Whoever gets the DVD - just reply in this post so we don't have a 100 'I got the PDL DVD' threads :)

i work at Blockbuster, so we have it a week early, but i can't buy it.  :( it's such a f'in tease. I went in the back and saw some of the extra features, and the Blossoms and Blood segment is really cool. It ate up my break-time real quick.

so far it looks like a great DVD, aside from that fact that distribution fucked up all the copies we have by leaving them in a puddle of water. One thing i don't like about it is how the packaging of the DVD is designed. It doesn't open up like a book as Magnolia and Boogie nights does, but slides out veritcally. I find it a little harder to put it back in the casing, but enough bithcing about the packaging. This is a great DVD.

I got mine from the video store where my daughter works.
She had to beg & plead & risk her job to convince the manager to allow her to buy it for me for Father's Day.
Now my life is complete.

Did the same thing myself.  I have gone to wal mart for a few releases.  Royal Tenenbaums and now PDL.  I love my 24 hour wal mart.  You are right about the different breed of people there.

By the way, just finished watching both discs.  I love this freakin movie.

Got the PDL dvd this morning at Best Buy. All the new movies that just came out were on a rack(Hours, Kangeroo Jack) but sadly PDL was in the back area, in the comedy section... So I grabbed like a stack of PDL dvds and put them on a front display... heh heh It's for the cause.

drove to wal-mart this morning around 10 to pick it up. at first i was thinking they wouldn't have it, w/ my shitty luck n' all. i knew blockbuster would have it but it would be like $30. so after 20 mins. of making my way thru super duper wal-mart (muther fucker is so damn big, takes a half hour just to find paper clips)  out of the corner of my eye i see the blue suit. it was all the way at the end of the aisle. sum employee was putting up all the new dvds and was standing in front of the pdl stack. took me a minute to wait for him to move his pale ass but finally, i got it. for only $19.99!!

so now im home and i don't want to watch it yet, not by myself. i need to find sumone to watch it with, maybe tonight.

i luv the cover, wasn't too crazy about it at first but its growing on me. the dvd booklet is great too.

Jeremy: how'd you get it so cheap?  Best Buy's advertised price was like $23 or something, so that's why I didn't go there.  Maybe I should have.  Ah well, too late now.

This is one of the nicest DVDs I have ever seen. The packaging and artwork are perfect, B&B is beautiful, the extras and deleted scenes clue you in a lot to what is happening and it is mos def cool to see some new footage. I had forgotten how pretty the cinematography was, and the deleted sister phone scenes connects with personal experiences of mine.

Everything really flows and it is well put together, exceeded my expectations and I am happy with it. B&B is good because it has deleted footage in a much more PDL way then say just clicking and playing them, they flow and blend in it.

Also, D&D Matress Man comercial is

Just started watching mine after exploring the packaging (Greg is listed under the Special Thanks in the booklet) and something was bothering me - there's like, a green blob in the upper right corner of the letterbox during the whole scene where Barry finds the harmonium. I was like, getting real pissy and started looking for the receipt, but then when Lance arrives for work, the blob  was gone.

Anybody notice that greenness, or is my copy of the movie botched?

I bought the DVD yesterday.  It's been a long time since I saw the film (September I guess it was) and I found it even more enjoyable on the second viewing.  Must admit that there was nothing special about the features, not bad but not exceptional.  I liked the commercial though and the booklet looked like it was for a Radiohead CD.

Anyway, I have to tell you guys something.  I was at Blockbuster yesterday trying to rent a couple movies (does anyone know why I can't find George Washington and Interview With the Assassin here in Canada?) and I must have overheard at least six people pass by PDL and wonder what it was.  They thought it was a straight-to-video film.  Naturally, nobody rented it.  So I followed them around for a bit to see what they would find more interesting and of course it was Just Married and other shit.  You know how it works.

So then I get to the checkout where I'm buying PDL and the clerk tells me that this movie is horrible.  I said it was an acquired taste and not for everyone but she continued with the all too familiar "it wasn't funny!"

And don't you think that John C. Reilly could have played Walter the Dentist?  He even looks like Robert Smigel.

I can't believe some checkout woman has the gall to tell you a movie that you're buying is horrible, like you're gonna go put it back.

I would've done something, anything, to let her know how much she is just a goddamned sheep and that her opinions are of no consequence at all...

I've gotten in fights with old ladies at WalMart before over shit like that. Not fist fights, mind you, but I get them pretty frustrated.

Also, in the theatre, when I went to see PDL for the second time, some people were just leaving, and when they overheard I was buying a ticket for PDL, they came over like they were doing me a favor and whispered that I shouldn't see the movie because it was horrible. When I told them it was my second time, they were all confused, and the one chick went on in this "I know everything" voice about how it was an alright movie from an "arty perspective, like the camera was interesting, and film school people should find a lot of interesting stuff", but then she explained to me that it just wasn't that good a movie. I swear, the only thing worse than people who don't give a shit at all about movies, are those people that learn two words like "cinematography" or "pacing", and think they can sum up a film's technical achievments.

Well said.  :)

I remember watching it the first time in the theater (out of three times) and the minute the credits started rolling, two old ladies (who I heard gasping esp. during the phone sex scene) said it was the weirdest movie they'd ever seen.  The other one agreed with her, then said whoever made the film clearly had no idea how to create a good film.

I had to restrain myself from kicking them in their cellulite-ridden, cottage-cheese skinned asses.

I just think it boils down to what most people think movies should be......a mindless, inconsequential distraction for a couple of hours. I'm a quitter, though. I've given up fighting tooth and nail with people who easily dismiss these kinds of movies and have the nerve to think that their opinion matters.

Back to the topic.

I like the dvd. I think the booklet is a waste, and if it did have to come, there should have been a sleeve for it. I love the design of the case, I just wish it had been a traditional cover like the Magnolia and Boogie Nights one, I can just imagine its going to look like shit after some wear and tear.

The deleted scenes didn't do a lot for me, liked the Mattress Man commercial, Blossoms & Blood I loved, esp. the re-working of the car conversation. The artwork segment was more enjoyable than expected, loved the song.

Great transfer, great movie, no layer change.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

I Love The Cover!

Can't wait to get it home and watch everything. Lent it to my parents last night. They watched and enjoyed. My dad figures most people didn't like it because the harmonium would've confused them (as in, why it's there). We talked about it for awhile. I think he's right. It even bothered me a little bit the first time I saw it.

Just out of curiosity, why do you like the cover?  I think the rest of the package is fantastic, but the cover irks me to no end.  Why not put the artwork on the front too???  Or the movie poster for that matter???
Title: I got the PDL DVD - The definitive thread
Post by: SoNowThen on June 25, 2003, 11:01:21 AM
Because as much as everyone else saw it as the colorful love story, all I really focused on was

1. How truly bizarre it was

2. How everything seemed to take place around white walls. The production design (Hawaii notwithstanding) was very plain. So the white cover just suits it so well for me.

And I like how his face is shaded. And PTA is right, the head is a funny shape. Quirky. That's how I wanna sum up PDL, not romantic, or lush, but quirky.

I'm not in that camp.  Although SoNowThen has a very interesting perspective on this.  Personally, I saw the movie as an offbeat romance...which is why I thought they should include Emily Watson and Sandler in something approaching romantic, though not necessarily the Kiss.

Picked it up today at Best Buy. I had to drive and hour and a half to get to Best Buy. I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere this summer, but, strangely, they had tons of copies not only in the new release section but they had laid out a table at the front of the store with just PDL. I'm kind of neutral about the outer cover, but when I slid that off and saw the Jeremy Blake art on the white background I was quite pleased. I also like the use of duct tape, my new favorite art supply.

Pretty fantastic.  I can't help but feel let down that there is no commentary track or atleast behind the scenes footage.  The dvd really feels in need of some sort of pt anderson documentation of himself working on this film.  He's never had a dvd released without such a thing.  Very disappointing.

Have to say that deleted scene with Adam Sandler losing his train of thought from the running little kid is the funniest fucking thing i've ever seen.  I wish there was some explination as to why it was taken out.

In the shooting script, PTA writes a scene on the airplane (as he's heading off to Hawaii to unite with Lena) and he wells up with tears, a beautiful flood of emotion, as he spots a baby on a plane.

That scene was shot...trust me. But it was with a little boy.

Yes, but it wasn't in the final cut.  I wish he'd included it (or the deleted scene at the warehouse).

i wish he never threw anything away, or that he only shot exactly precisely what he needed and that he would never change his mind or let things go.

and i'd also like a collection of all the cigarette butts he discarded during filming.

Shit, I'm late getting my copy.

I really don't feel like ordering it online.  I'll probably go through some kind of hell getting it local, just like when Fight Club came out.

I had to argue with my then-boss for the last copy in CompUSA.

And to whom it may concern: I would have freakin'  PRE-ORDERED PDL if there was audio commentary.  But here I am, 2 days late and counting...

just watching it and found a part that is so great and sad that i forgot about. when barry is at that phone booth in the airport leaving the message for georgia telling her he'll be home in a few days and that they should work out getting his money back -etc.-- well isn't it funny how polite barry is at that part? i mean these ppl. stole his money and smashed his car and everything and he's still all like "please call me back, thank you." and the music at that part too, it's sad.

No biggie... But at that point they had not yet smashed his car. When he is driving home from the airport is when they smash him... And hurt his lady. That is what causes him to finaly loose the nice guy timid approach.

I don't know if it's true for everybody but anybody remember Woogy's whole theory in There's Something About Mary about the "loaded gun" and whatnot? That's convincing enough for me. It's pretty simple.

Anyway yea, that scene is great. I love how he acts like they're NOT going to be pissed off at him anymore for some reason when they get the message...like it's all forgotten or something, that's hilarious.

The car scene in the beginning works for a couple of reasons.

A: It is a really great way to make an audience sit up straight.

The harmonium is abandoned. They kick it to the curb.
Barry feels abandoned. His sisters kick him to the curb all day long.

He sort of stands there looking at it. He peeks around the corner. He can't just leave it there can he? Poor harmonium. Nobody wants it. It is just sitting there.

Barry is afraid of it at first because he has never seen real love.
Later, Lena asks Barry if he stole it.  Barry says, is it yours?  Lena says with a twinkle, no, it's yours. ( me =    )  Barry's job is to repair Lena's broken heart.  jmo

The public's overall disregard for for 'PDL' vexes me.

I remember going to see it for the first time (excited as hell), buying popcorn etc, asking the usher if he's seen it, in which he replied: 'No but I've heard it's pretty terrible, actually'. I say 'Okay, thanks man', leave the wanker and take my seat in a near empty theatre on a friday night. A little over twenty people eventually show up. Weak.

'PDL' is the first film I've seen in a cinema and felt that I was the only one appreciating it. I'm sitting there, absolutely loving what I'm watching, while others take off during it, making sure their comments are heard before leaving. When it's finished, I could see the ones who were just like me, staying for the credits, wide grins on their faces, loudly sharing info like 'the guy who made this is really young' etc. But its obvious that the screenings response was overall luke-warm.

That's another reason why I can't wait to have my own copy, to enjoy the splendor of 'PDL' without hearing 'This is boring, let's just leave' and the frequent 'What the fuuuuuuuck?!'

I was on a trip home (about 5 hours) and I left late at night so that once it was midnight (monday night) I stopped at a 24 hour wal-mart.  I looked around for the dvd, couldn't find it...asked someone and they got it out of a box for me.

I think this is the best packaging I have ever seen for a DVD, right up there with Pulp Fiction SE.  I love B&B extra but after watching the movie again I really wish there was commentary.  There are some things I would like to hear PTA talk about with the film.  The use of the lens flares (if that is the proper term), the harmonium, etc.

But the disc is still great.

If you don't like the cardboard cover, wait until Hollywood Video starts selling used copies.  They usually have special Amaray case artwork for movies that come in cardboard cases (Royal Tenenbaums, Harry Potter) or those Warner snapper cases.  That's what I'm gonna do.

Studios, just do what Criterion does and use the double Alpha case!

two observations:

1. is Lonely Blue Boy a lot lower in the mix on the DVD than in the theater?
that little riff really sets the scene for a big "showdown," but i could barely make out anything on the DVD mix

2. that shot when Barry is running from the brothers....when he lunges forward and then emerges much smaller running down the street..........can someone make sense to me on this? is it just supposed to be weird?
i watched it in slow mo a couple times....i never even noticed the big flashing arrow before......really cool detail

I noticed that, too.  Difficult to compare if the mix is the same between the DVD and the theater -- I assume that they don't touch the mix after it's been laid down, but I do remember it was quite low to begin with.  Sort of gave it a muzak feel to it, and after buying the soundtrack I realized it was the opening riff to that song.

Quote2. that shot when Barry is running from the brothers....when he lunges forward and then emerges much smaller running down the street..........can someone make sense to me on this? is it just supposed to be weird?

I'm not sure what you mean.  He's smaller because there's a great height difference between where he jumps and where he emerges.  Of course we don't see exactly what this is.  That scene is interesting to me though because when he starts running you can tell it's another guy that was waiting down there since the timing between falling, getting back up and running again is way too quick.

I've got a question, too, hope it hasn't been asked.  When Barry returns to the car after he's beaten up the brothers, Lela isn't bleeding anymore.  I always thought Barry was just seeing that in his head and that's what really instigated his anger.  Of course, she could have just wiped it off, but you'd think there'd be smears.  She has the bandage in the hospital later though, so I dunno.  I just always find that a bit perplexing.
Title: I got the PDL DVD - The definitive thread

I figured it wasn't intense bleeding, so dismissed that thought.  Plus, the angle you see her at is almost entirely on the right side.  She has to turn to see it, and from what I remember it's more of a profile the second time you see her.

When you're really, really scared, like Barry seems to be, you'd be surprised what you can do and not get hurt.

Of course, punching a wall hard enough so the word 'love' shows on your knuckles might hurt too, if it weren't a movie.  Or running to Utah.  That would tucker you out.

Kangaroo Jack has two audio commentaries.  TWO.

I'm so sick of this superbit shit.  You could encode films at a much smaller bitrate if you know anything at all about digital video.  Ah, the grand illusion of value.  Supersize my DVD, please.  Yeah, those extra fries don't make the sandwich any bigger, do they?

I'm so sick of this superbit shit.  You could encode films at a much smaller bitrate if you know anything at all about digital video.  Ah, the grand illusion of value.  Supersize my DVD, please.  Yeah, those extra fries don't make the sandwich any bigger, do they?

Even though Magnolia didn't have a commentary, it had the terrific Magnolia Diary.  The second disc on PDL might as well not even be there.

When my films come out on DVD, I'm gonna do two commentaries, a making-of, deleted scenes, and have MrBurgerKing do a third commentary.

I second Ghoulardi Goon's ""  Brilliant idea!  Fast food and film philosophy rolled into one.  Tasty.

What was that movie that had Carrot Top doing a commentary?  Rules of Attraction?  That was such a terrible idea.  Now the Kung Pow commentaries... that's inspired right there.

There are so many things I want to do with DVD, I can't WAIT to get an opportunity.  I've somehow lost interest in deleted scenes (I think the Road to Perdition DVD is at fault), but I definitely want to include all sorts of documentaries and screen tests.  And not those horrible HBO first look 'documentaries'.  When someone gets their ass kissed THAT MUCH, it should be rated xxx.

Okay, I'm too angry.  Time to leave the site alone for a while.  :-D

Quick question: besides the Spinal Tap DVD, does anyone know of any other DVDs that have commentaries of people in character?  I know one of the Coen's DVDs had one, though it wasn't a character from their movies...

aw

From ptanderson.com.

"The PDL DVD drops to #8 on the DVD/VHS rental chart for the week ending July 27h. PDL earned $7.48 million in rental revenue for the week. Total revenue stands at $44.8 million. On the DVD sales chart, it it dropped out of the Top 25 for the week ending July 19th."

So, those rental figures are pretty good isn't it? Or how can it be compared to... let's say box office is compared to budget and marketing cost and you are able to know if the film did well, broke even or lost, so in the case of PDL, when would you say the dvd did really good?

"The PDL DVD drops 2 places to #10 on the DVD/VHS rental chart for the week ending August 3rd. PDL earned $5.71 million in rental revenue for the week. Total revenue now stands at $50.5 million."

and who said pdl was not going to make money.

i wondered how much it sucked.

Luis Guzman doesn't work for less than $8 million per movie. But he's worth every penny.

seems a little excessive, i know he's a good actor, but you've seen the roles he's in. in magnolia, he has probably 10 mins of footage. jeez, film industry is a bastard.

On a previous episode of "St. Elsewhere," I babbled:

QuoteLuis Guzman doesn't work for less than $8 million per movie. But he's worth every penny.

I would be remiss if i didn't point out that I was being just a wee bit facetious with that statement. I'm sure Luis doesn't get anywhere near that much per film. ... I am clearly not the person to attempt to make definitive statements in this matter, as I have utterly no knowledge of the pay scale for supporting characters in major motion pictures.

Um, I think that's it...

I bought the PDL DVD today.  I wanted it in a hard plastic case, so I waited until Hollywood Video started selling used copies.  No booklet.

The upcoming Australasian 'P-DL' DVD and VHS is only in widescreen. Not often is a new release video ONLY in widescreen. Just wondering, is the US video only in widescreen?

Getting the reissue treatment is Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love, which will get pared down to a single disc. Features are the same as the previous two-disc set, sans the second platter of extras (namely, just the movie in anamorphic widescreen plus Dolby Digital and DTS surround tracks). Retail is $19.95.

I got it!
The DVD was released today here in Germany and I got it now! It's just an amaray-case without a booklet but the DVD has all the extras of the code-1-DVD.
And I just finished watching the movie for the first time and I fucking loved it! Not as good as "Magnolia", but better than "Boogie Nights"! I really didn't think that I would like it so much.

That was hilarious! It's the only extra I looked at. PSH is great in this one. It was amazing when he fell off the roof. I'm surprised that PSH didn't break his neck or something during this...
